Turning OFF IPv6 on 10.6.8 returns browsing speed to normal & more...

Recently installed 10.6.8 on my MBP and had same problem many reported with unbearably slow browsing on all browsers (Safari, Firefox & Chrome all took 10sec+ to load Google's home page with beach balls spinning along the way).  Also many apps where slow to even open.  Really noticed a problem with iTunes - which for me runs a bit sluggish anyway as my music library is over 2TB with 275,000 songs.  With iTunes it would do the beach ball jiggy for 30sec sometimes when just scrolling the library.
Anyway, to make a long story short did all the usual of Repairing Permissions, etc - but same same.  Then remembered in the 10.6.8 release notes Apple made changes to the IPv6 protocol so turned it OFF for both my Ethernet and Wireless  (Network->Advanced).  And WAL-LA.  It is like a whole new machine with browsing back to lightning speed and even iTunes is working like never seen it before.
Hope this may help others facing similar grief... But also curious on why this would be the case...
Btw  - forgot to mention since last couple of updates could not AirPlay anymore through my AirportExpress.  When I tried to connect to the remote speakers it would sit there for about 20sec showing it was trying to connect then stopped.  Connection from to AirportExpress was no issues.  As with the above, after turning off IPv6 - all working fine as well.

this should help

I paused the movie download but did not turn off my IPad.  When I returned to complete the download, the "waiting" message has been on the screen for over an hour.  How can I complete the download?

I recommend purchasing lion on a USB drive at Apple Store. This will avoid all of the downloading hassles.
Also, be sure you clone your hard drive first. A lot of people want to go back to Snow Leopard and if you choose to do this cloning will make the process very easy.

To disable that feature it will depend on whether or not you sync everything in the cloud using Apple's iCloud, OR if you both use the same desktop/laptop computer with iTunes. Here is a link to the Apple support page in regards to the automatic download feature included with your iPhone and corresponding softwares such as iTunes.

  • How to turn off IPV6 on Lion Server

I did a clean install of Lion Server on my Mac Mini. I need to enable the firewall on that machine.
My Mini is only connected via WiFi to the network.
Due to firewall / Networksoftware issues i would like to disable IPV6 on the Lion Server completely.
The menu however only shows entries for "Automatic, Manual or Link-Local". On a Lion install (no Server) there is also the "Off".
Is there any reason i cannot switch off IPV6? If i cannot switch it off how do i configure my firewall so my software no longer
tries to connect using IPv6. I assume IPV6 is chosen in the first place due to a mDNS running with IPV6 enabled as i only configure ipv4 stuff and have eliminated all ipv6 completely from all other os's.
    thanks & regards
    udo

I found a fix for this issue and applied it to several different MacBooks, iMac's, PowerMac's in the last couple of weeks. It works quite well and will now show or unlock the option of "Off" in the IPv6 section of GUI once these process is completed.
Click some place on the desktop
Click on the Go menu at the top of your screen
    Click on Utilities
Inside the Utilities menu you will find the utility called Terminal
    Open up Terminal
Depending if your account has admin privileges or the following will be different.
In the terminal window type in the following:
networksetup –listallnetworkservices  (precede this command with su or sudo if you are not logged in as an admin of the MAC)
You will see a list of network services such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, Firewire etc etc.
The next couple of commands will enable a new option in the GUI that will say Off under your Wi-Fi and Ethernet etc.
    networksetup -setv6off Ethernet
    networksetup –setv6off Wi-Fi
    networksetup –setv6off FireWire
networksetup –setv6off 'Bluetooth PAN'  (if you have this)
networksetup –setv6off 'VPN (PPTP)'   (if you have this)
Close the terminal window and reboot your MAC
You will be all set and all IPV6 stuff will be disabled for your networking and you will also have the new option in the GUI to change it if you so choose to in the future.

  • How can I turn off the Pinch feature while in IE Browser yet continue to use the writing feature

I found that I can use a stylus pen while in a browser with my HP TouchSmart 300.  It works flawlessly to write however when I rest my hand on the screen (to write)  it recognizes my hand as one point and the stylus pen as the other and the pinch feature makes my screen big or small.  If I could turn off the pinch feature yet leave the writing feature on, all would be perfect.  Can anyone help, please

It's not possible, it doesn't use pressure on the screen to sense your stylus or hand, it uses the sensor array around the screen.

  • How can I turn off IPv6 temporary addresses in a enterprise environment

So in a default configuration Vista and Windows 7 clients will use IPv6 temporary address (per RFC 3041), but I would like to be able to disable this with a GPO.
I know I can do this by using a startup script tied to a GPO using the netsh interface ipv6 set privacy state=disabled store=persistent but I really do not want to run a logon script especially when as you can see in the command it is a persistent
    setting.
Any ideas on using a registry based GPO for this?

    Hi,
OK, I understand what you want. But after I use the Process Monitor to capture the behavior, I found that a lot of registry keys would be changed. So you can not set it via registry unless the IPv6 is disabled.
    Thanks for understanding.
Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. ”
Thank you again for the answer.
As a follow up question... How does one suggest/request a change in default behavior in a MS product?
While the RFC 3041 addresses might be nice to have for the average consumer they are not ideal in a enterprise environment. I have found that the temporary addresses will register in DNS, but this doesn't completely solve the issue of tracking and accountability,
you would still need a application to query, correlate and store that information.
So it would be nice if the business versions of Windows Vista/7/2K8 and the next client OS would not have this behavior by default.

  • Turning off IPv6

Hi All: Our internal LAN is 100% IPv4 and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Would I see a performance bump if I disable IPv6 on all my servers (a mixture of OES2 and OES11) and my Win7 clients? Or is this not advised?
    Thanks, Chris.

Do you know if the Novell DNS daemon (novell-named) supports IPv6 ? I played around with the DNSDHCP console but don't see where you enable/setup IPv6. Chris.

There isn't currently a TID (myself and Novell have previously had a
"conversation" about this) but whilst IPv6 is enabled by default
(because of SLES) it's not actually supported with OES so, as others
have already said, you may as well disable it.

  • Rip out, Turn Off, Disable, Terminate ALL PDF IN SAFARI BROWSER please!

Once again (third time) I am trying to disable the display of PDFs inside the Safari browser window. Every time I do this, they update the system and come up with a new way to Turn it back on, grrrr.
I ONLY want PDFs to be downloaded and displayed in Acrobat Reader. I never want to EVER see again a PDF in a browser window.
    HELP!

    Quit Safari and...
    i) Move 'AdobePDFViewer.plugin' out of 'HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/'
ii) Enter "defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES" without the quotes in Terminal (HD/Applications/Utilities/)
Remember, the preference which disables Safari's native PDF support (ii) is stored in the properly list (com.apple.Safari). Should you ever trash that file, you will have to reenter the command again.

  • How do I turn off the auto-play on the web browser? I'm tired of my computer slowing down because your browser is trying to load some kind of advertisment. I do

My screens are consistently slow loading because the auto-play is always trying to load some advertisment. If I wish to look at the ad, I'll click on it and open it.

It's a video? Most video ads probably use the Flash plugin. You could stop sites from using Flash automatically and require them to get your approval. And obviously there's no rush giving approval if it's just for an ad...
To set "Ask to Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:
    * Command+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".
When you visit a site that wants to use the Flash plugin, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.

  • Streaming has slowed to a crawl on my MacBook Pro. This is using both Safari and Firefox. What can I do to return streaming speed to normal?

I have been trying to look through Activity Monitor but nothing looks strange there. This happened all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago and has continually become worse and worse to the point that a video won't even stream beyond 2 or 3 seconds past the point being viewed.

Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?   How much ram do you have?  Is it maxed out?  How are you connected to the internet when streaming?  Ethernet connection is faster than wireless.  Especially when it comes to streaming.
Check with your isp to determine if the issue is on their end.
Check your computer speed on the Speedtest website.

  • Cannot turn off Homesharing to AppleTV: IPv6 connections remain

I CANNOT prevent my AppleTV from sharing my iTunes Library even though ALL sharing on my computer (including "home sharing" in iTunes) is turned OFF
There are several discussions about Homesharing not working if the AppleTV has gone asleep for over 24 hours.
In "most cases", restarting the AppleTV and/or restarting iTunes will solve this problem.  On occasion, I have had to reboot the computer that was suppose to be sharing.
I have two computers.  One with Homesharing (system 1) on and the other with Homesharing (and all sharing) turned off. (system 2)
When I restart the AppleTV so that it will see the iTunes library for system 1, it will -also- pick up the iTunes library for system 2.
The Bonjour Sleep Proxy is somehow involved in this.  It keeps the ARP table populated with IP addresses of systems that have gone to sleep.  (AppleTV)   An Airport Extreme will run the Bonjour Sleep Proxy.  I have found that the AEX will cause as many as 60 DAAP sockets (both v4 and v6) to be open on my computers -- if iTunes is running.  When the AppleTV wakes up, restarting it seems to clear these extraneous DAAP sockets and ONLY ipv6 sockets remain open on system 2.
On system 1 (Homesharing enabled) has 3 ipv4 sockets open for DAAP.
This appears to mean that when Homesharing is turned off it is ignored by IPv6.
On further investigation, I note that link local addresses are being used between the AppleTV and system 2.
    tcp6       0      0  johns-macbook-pr.daap  great-room-apple.54552 ESTABLISHED
    tcp6       0      0  johns-macbook-pr.daap  great-room-apple.54551 ESTABLISHED
    tcp6       0      0  johns-macbook-pr.daap  great-room-apple.54550 ESTABLISHED
The only problem is that the MAC address these connections are made over are to the Airport Extreme
    great-room-apple-tv.local               90:72:40:c:8c:9f     en1 22h54m16s S
    fe80::cbc:15ab:bdd7:98b7%en1    90:72:40:c:8c:9f     en1 22h54m0s  S
    ? (10.0.1.1) at 90:72:40:c:8c:9f on en1 ifscope [ethernet]
Of course, this is a side-effect of using Bonjour Sleep Proxy.
When the appleTV is asked to list the contents of the iTunes Library on System 2, the MAC address is corrected to the Apple TV.
But the problem remains that HomeSharing for system 2 is OFF.  How did this information get into the Apple TV and why does System 2 even answer?
Attempting to turn off IPv6 on system 2 has resulted in "System Preferences" freezing and being "force quit"
(I set up IPV6 for manual configuration but did not enter any address.  A warning message came up saying an address was required but System Preferences no longer responded.)
Properly entering "::" for all zeros worked.  But that still does not disable "link-local" addresses.  So restarting the AppleTV -STILL- shows system 2 iTunes Library being available over IPv6 sockets.

  • IMac 2008 emc 2211 suddenly turns off and back on, RAM problem?

I have an iMac from 2008 emc 2211.
Two years ago i upgraded my RAM from 2GB to 4GB Crucial memories.
Two weeks ago my imac started to suddenly turn off and back on inmediatly. Recently it stared to happen more often to the point that it can't boot completely and show the desktop
I checked the power source and it was fine.
I opened the computer and pulled out the power supply and it seamed to be fine.
I tried to run the hardware test with the disk that came with the computer and it can't even finish the test because it turns off.
Before it couldn't boot anymore i checked if it was overheathing with smcFanControl and the temperature was always around 44C, so it was fine.
Could this be the crucial RAM that is failing?
    thanks in advance.

Ok, i've replaced the RAM and the power supply and the problem persist, so it seams to be the logic board that is failing.
    Any ideas?
