Turning off keychain

When I use Safari, every time I go to a new page, a box pops up asking for my keychain password. I don't know it, and I want it to stop doing this! The computer was given to me secondhand by a family member, who says he never had this problem, and thus doesn't know the password. My login password doesn't work, and neither does his old one. HELP!!

Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
The best you can do is start over with a new keychain file, which means losing your existing keychain user names/passwords.
By default the login password and keychain password are the same. To reset the default go to your Finder: Your User Account>Library>Keychains. Move the login.keychain file to the desktop.
Now log out/log in to your user account. On the log-in a new keychain file is created. Its password is now the same as your login password.
Restart Safari. As you visit for the initial time any site requiring user name/password, a keychain prompt will appear asking if you want to save the new password. Answer "yes". This entry is now saved in your Keychain file.
Note: you may see a prompt asking if Safari can access your keychain file. In the event this occurs, open Keychain Access.app in your Applications>Utilities folder. On the left, single click on Login. On the right select a keychain entry. Double click that entry. When the panel opens, select "Access Control".
In the "Always allow access" panel, click on the +, then navigate to Safari in your Applications folder. Save changes.
Just for good measure, go to the Keychains Menu>Keychain First-Aid and select "repair". If any errors appear, rerun until you get a clean pass.
Close Keychain Access and restart Safari.

I set up Keychain and do not have access to the telephone I gave.  Now I can no longer connect my ipad to my windows computer, itunes does not automatically open when I plug in the USB.  I can not turn off Keychain in my ipad since authorization is pending awaiting the code sent by SMS, which I can not get.  Can someone advise how to get rid of Keychain.  Should I cancel my icloud account?

    I appreciate your help.
Have reset the ipad, but that changed nothing.  I can not turn off Keychain, iit remains "pending approval".  Probably, the only thing to do is to close my icloud account...which I hate to do since there is a lot of data saved there.  But, I am unable to back the ipad up on my Windows 8 computer because itunes no longer opens when the ipad is attached.
Oh well...computers are computers and it is impossible to cover 100% of the situations.
Keychain iss not the best app for someone who lives in 3 different countries.

  • Turning off keychain login

I just moved from a MacBook Pro to an iMac. In fact, I moved from about 5 years of using a MacBook Pro, which functioned as both a desktop (when attached to a monitor) and a laptop.
As part of my security paranoia, I locked the keychain, and required a separate login password for the keychain. So, if you were good enough to get past my login password, up popped the Keychain password which was 20 random characters (which I memorized) and impossible to break.
But my iMac is pretty secure sitting in my house, so I'm less concerned. I guess a thief could get it, my login password and Apple ID password are really complex, and your average thief will just sell the machine, and someone will just reformat, and my privacy will be protected. I just want to save the annoyance of that second login (which is so complicated, I always mistype the password).
Can someone explain how to shut off the separate keychain login? I've clicked a bunch of stuff which I think should turn off keychain login, but it's not working. Besides, the keychain preferences seems to have been written in some lame English, because you can't figure out if by clicking a box you get a double-negative or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Set the keychain password to the same as your login password.

  • How can I turn off Keychain from asking for my password EVERY time I check for mail?

how can I turn off Keychain from asking for my password EVERY time I check for mail?
This is really driving me nuts.....
    Thanks

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, and then click General.
Open the General pane of Security & Privacy preferences
    2.     Select “Require password...NEVER after sleep or screen saver begins.”  You can adjust the amount of delay before a password is required in the pop-up menu.
From what I am aware, you cannot turn off the keychain.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can't turn off Keychain on iPhone

My iCloud Keychain is not working with my iPhone.  I took the suggestion to disable Keychain on my iPhone; however, if I toggle off the setting in iCloud it just comes right back on. ???

    Hello Dustinlgreen,
Oh man! That definitely sounds frustrating. Let’s see if we can troubleshoot this issue. We can begin by forcing the settings application to close followed by a restart:
Force an app to close in iOS - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/HT5137
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/HT201559
If the issue persists, try signing out of your iCloud account, restart your device, then sign back in:
    iCloud: Change iCloud feature settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2613
    Turn off iCloud completely
Depending on whether you want to stop using iCloud on all or only some devices, do one or more of the following:
On your iOS device: Go to Settings > iCloud, then at the bottom of the screen, tap Sign Out (Delete Account in iOS 7 and earlier).
    Cheers,
    Matt M.

  • Cannot Turn Off Keychain

    Hi
I am trying to turn off iCloud Keychain on OSX 10.10.2 but cant...
This is the screen i see. I have already turned off (with great difficulty) keychain on my iPhone. So I press options and I get 'reset keychain', press yes.
enter my password, all is fine. setup new 4 number passcode, fine, enter my phone number and get the error: iCloud keychain couldn't be set up because there was an error communicating with icloud.
I want to do this because whenever i boot i get 20 or so messages asking for the password to 'local items' keychain.
This sound familiar to anyone? I'm verging on a clean install, spent days trying to figure this out.
    Thanks,
    Gaz.

  • Turn off Keychain prompts in Safari in Mavericks

My wife uses Safari on an iMac, an iPad, (and rarely on an iPhone), to log in to her company's secure website and submit secure orders. Each order involves entering a different and unqiue credit card number, new names, new addresses, etc. Now that I just upgraded to Mavericks, now each and every time she completes a new order on the iMac, an iCloud Keychain(?) window within Safari always asks if she wants to save this info. Of course, she NEVER wants to save this - in fact, it's illegal to.
She selects the "Never" option every time, yet (I assume) since each and every order uses a new credit card, name, etc, she's asked endlessly, and continues to select never. So, I guess "never" in this case, actually means "always ask with each new card number? (or name or zip or something unknown and unrevealed)."
These 3 devices are all logged in to the same (her) iCloud account.
How can I stop this prompt, forever, and yet, not turn off auto password logins to websites, etc?
    iMac is mid 2010 with OS 10.9 (13A603) with Safari 7.0 (9537.71).
iPad is model MC979LL/A with iOS 7.0.4 (11B554a)

  • HT3915 how to turn off keychain pop ups

My computer won't accept any passwords I put into these keychain pop ups. So they constantly pop up and wont go away even if you click cancel 6 or 7 times. Can someone help me to turn them off?!

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, testing after each one, until it's resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Follow the directions in this support article.
    Step 2
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the iCloud keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain.
    Step 3
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device.
    Step 4
Open the Keychains folder as in Step 1. There should be a file in that folder with the name "login.keychain". If there is also a file iwith the name "login_renamed_1.keychain", then please do as follows:
    Rename login.keychain to "login-old.keychain".
    Rename login_renamed_1.keychain to "login.keychain".
You can then close the folder.
Delete the login keychain from the keychain list in Keychain Access. Choose Delete References when prompted, not Delete References & Files.
    Select
    File ▹ Add Keychain...
from the menu bar. Add back the file now named "login.keychain". If any of your needed keychain items are missing from it, also add back the file now named "login-old.keychain". I suggest you transfer any needed items from that keychain to the login keychain, then delete it. The transfers are made by drag-and-drop in Keychain Access. You'll need to enter your password for each item transferred.
Run Keychain First Aid again. Quit Keychain Access.

  • Can you turn off  "Keychain"

It is annoying me, I go into keychain and keychain first aid, but every-time it prompts me for a password, i type it in, it tells me it is incorrect.
Can i make this go away?
    TIA

Keychain stores your passwords for applications to access when needed, such as checking for mail or syncing to .Mac, logging onto file servers, etc. Attempting to disable it would make your situation even worse. If you're getting password errors for your Admin account, boot from the Leopard installer disc and choose "Reset Password" from the Utilities menu. Follow the prompts to re-enter your Admin account password. You will likely get prompts initially after restarting for your passwords as Keychain rebuilds its list.

  • HT4898 Why have Apple turned off keychain sync when moving to iCloud?

This was one of the most useful feature I found as I didn't have to remember my passwords when moving from one Apple device to another. I think its pretty daft that this has been dropped! So what to do now ? Any advice?

No one knows here, since we're just users - and no one every reported why Apple did this.  There must have been a good reason though.  But we'll never know.

  • HT5834 can't turn off iCloud keychain on apple devices and can't get them to sync !

i could gey my apple devices to sync icloud keychains , nor could i get them to turn off icloud key chain.
Solution: Reset icloud keycahin using forgot passcode option, it will reset the entire icloud keycahin and bring every thing back to the way it is supposed to be. approve all the devices using the one used to reset, and you are all good to go !!

You're my best friend.  Seriously.  I've read virtually every thread I could find on this issue, and this is the only thing that worked.  Has been driving me bonkers since getting the iPhone 6 in September.  THANK YOU!!

  • ICloud Keychain won't turn off

I tried to turn iCloud keychain when I set up my iPhone. It requires a security code which is set to an old international number I no longer have. When I click on "Don't have access to this phone" it takes me to iCloud Support, which gives no answers. When I try to turn Keychain off, it turns itself back on. I keep getting messages about approving iCloud keychain and I can't do anything to get out of this circle.  I tried to change the verification number according to the Apple Support directions - Settings-iCloud-Keychain-Advanced, but there is no advanced option in iOS8. I don't really want Keychain - just want to turn it off and quit getting these annoying messages.

The problem persists with iOS 8.3 and OS 10.10.3.  Please help!
