Turning off legacy file vault

I have tried to turn off my legacy file vault but keep getting an error message.
Can anyone help?

Would you care to disclose what the error message is?

  • Upgraded to Lion. Error turning off Legacy File Vault

I want to use the new file vault so homefolder files are encrypted in my time machine backup. When I was prompted in System Preferences, I chose to "turn off legacy file vault." After the passwords, etc., the system works for a while and has just returned an error message, something to the effect "an error has occured. Legacy File Vault will not be turned off." How do I get Legacy File Vault turned off (e.g, unencrypt the drive?)
    Thanks.

    - open the account (so that the Home is decrypted)
    - make a copy of Home folder
    - set a new temporary account (Admin)
    - restart with this new temporary account
    - remove the original Home folder, then remove the original account (via System Preferences - Users & Groups)
    - rename the copy with the original name
    - add a new account with the same original name via Users & Groups), that is recreated the deleted account
The system ask you if you want to use the existent Folder with the same - OK
At voila you have the account decrypted

  • How can I turn off legacy file vault when it needs additional 170 GB free on a HD that is only 250 GB?

I am trying to migrate to a new Macbook Pro (OSX 10.8.3) and I cannot migrate files over from my prior Macbook Pro (OSX 10.7.5) because of legacy file vault being on. When I try to turn off Legacy Filevault on old computer, it says I need to free up 170 GB of HD space. I only have a 250 GB HD to begin with! I don't see how I can possibly free up that much space. I need help!

Use a external storage drive and copy all your users files there, then Trash > Empty Trash the originals, then reboot and try Filevault again.

Note that any +4GB sized files will not transfer to a FAT32/MSDOS external drive many are formatted too.
You first need to change the format of the drive and in doing so, will erase all data on it.

  • I turned off my fire vault by accident and is there a way to stop it from decrypting cause that is going to take a long time and i want to keep my hard drive encrypted

I turned off my fire vault by accident and is there a way to stop it from decrypting cause that is going to take a long time and i want to keep my hard drive encrypted.
is there a way to stop it in the middle so it does not go through the whole process

It's called, "FileVault." If there is no option to stop the process, then the best bet would be to wait until decrypting is finished. Otherwise you run the risk of borking the whole thing. It's hard to imagine how you can accidentally turn off FileVault.

what are the differences between file vault and legacy file vault?

Legacy is an encrypted disk image of your Home folder, FileVault2 is whole disk encryption

  • Can't turn off Legacy Filevault

I have an iMac with 2 "legacy" filevault accounts from Snow Leopard.
I turned off legacy filevault on one of the two accounts, but the second account, which is a portable home directory, always generates an error during the decryption process. I have tried repairing disk permissions, rebooting etc, nothing works.
Any and all suggestions are welcome!

    - open the account (so that the Home is decrypted)

  • Problem turning off legacy filevault.

    Hey everyone,
I began the process of switching over to the new filevault, but have encountered a problem turning off the legacy vault. Everything seemed to be goin well, at first. It took about 30 minutes for copying to complete during decryption. However, it has been hung up at "copying is complete..." for nearly 12 hours now and is showing no signs of moving on. I have received no errors. What can I do to maybe kick start the process again or should I just do a forced shutdown. Any help here would be greatly appreciated because at this point I honestly don't know if I have any other option than a forced shutdown.
    Thanks

Ok, so I'm answering my own question here but it worked. I ended up doing a forced shutdown (holding down the power button until shut down initializes) from the screen indicating that "copying is complete..." When I restarted (manual restart using the power button again) the legacy vault was off and the new file vault was on and working properly. No data or settings were lost and everything was working properly.
Thank you to all of you who took the time to look at my initial question even if you didn't have an answer for it.

  • Safe to disable legacy file vault in Mountain Lion?

Have an iMac with Mountain Lion installed and everytime it's logged off or rebooted it hangs at a File Vault backup screen.  I did some research and found File Vault will only backup home folder when logged off or while rebooting.  Since the home folder is huge it's probably just taking its time.
When I went into security preferences an alert popped up saying it was using Legacy FileVault.  Is it OK to disable this?
Also, is the home folder not being backed up by TimeMachine during normal backups since it's FileVault?
Any suggestions or guidance would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion to report with Apple. In fact, this would be so easy to enable or disable it globaky from the system preferences, and or make it available from within the application preferences. In that way, each of us would be able to manage witch app is doing what.
If this is it, maybe we could ask Apple to give us some more room to manage our files.
    Thank again.
    Regards.

  • How to turn off "Copy Files on Import"

I'm new to Photoshop Elements 9 and the Organizer.  I'm trying to import my pictures into the organizer but I don't want to copy the file from the network drive to my local Macbook hard drive.  Unfortunately I can't figure out how to turn off the "Copy Files on Import" checkbox.
From within the Organizer I am selecting:
File -> Get Photos and Videos -> From Files and Folder
This opens a Finder window and I can navigate to the network drive, select the source folder, and select the files I want to import.  I just can't seem to figure out how to disable the "Copy Files on Import" option.  Is there something in Prefences that I need to change to allow me the option?
    Thanks,
    Vince

    From the PSE9 help :
    Add files from specific folders
In the Elements Organizer, from the Display menu, select Folder Location. The folder hierarchy panel opens on the left side of the Media Browser.
In the folder hierarchy panel, browse to the folder containing the files you want to import.
Right-click/Control-click the folder, and choose Import To Organizer. The Getting Photos dialog box will report whether files were imported.
    Click OK.
If files were imported, the folder’s icon changes from an Unmanaged Folder icon to a Managed Folder icon .

  • Legacy file vault - new machine.

This will probably be a stupid question - please bear with me - 59 year old, largely self taught regarding tech stuff.
I have a 2007 macbook pro with legacy filevault enabled. I realised after I had installed Lion that there was a new version of filevault, but when I attempted to move to the new filevault I was unable to get rid of the legacy version as the process seems to demand more disc space than was available, so I have just left things as they were.
I have now bitten the bullett and have bought a new Macbook Air, which will still be running Lion.
My question is ...when I move my stuff from my old to my new laptop, with migration assistant,  will the legacy filevault move too, or is it specific to the old machine?
The question itself probably reveals my basic lack of understanding, so be gentle with me!

When you migrate your data Lion will ask you if you want to keep legacy filevault or turn it off. If you choose to turn it off, you may have the same issue with your new MBA - not enough diskspace - and be unable to.
If the MBA has got enough diskspace, no problem.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion will run with legacy filevault enabled. Who knows about what comes after that.
You could try turning it off by cloning the disk to a larger external disk drive, booting off that drive, turning FV off, then cloning the un-turned off external drive back to the internal.
For cloning, use the free utility Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Should I turn on my file vault?

I literally just bought my Macbook Pro today. I got the most basic model (13 in. with minimum memory). I'm going to college in the fall soooo it's going to be my college laptop obviously. Anyway, I was playing around with the settings and I noticed my firewall was off so I obviously turned that on, but when I got to the filvault I was unsure as to whether or not I should turn that on or leave it off. Can someone better explain what it is to me, and whether or not they recommend to turn it on? Thanks!

Don't need that unless your a spy, a government worker with a ton of personal data or a buisness person with vital company secrets.
If you enable it, it encrypts your entire drive, slows down your computers performance and makes data recovery impossible in case later you have computer problems.
    Most commonly used backup methods
If you have data you wish to protect, it's best kept off the machine on a Iron Key, that way you can use it with any machine because you have to give the password to Apple ot fix your machine or to Customs or the police etc., if they want to search your machine.

  • Need additional space to turn off legacy FileVault?

I have a 320GB HD but the finder says I have almost 500GB of data which is impossible.  The about this mac tells me that I have 2GB free. I moved 100GB of items to the trash then emptied the trash and it still tells me I have 2GB free.  I recently upgraded to lion and when I go to deactivate legacy filevault as I am guessing that is the issue it tells me I need additional space? How can I use an external HD to fix this issue?  Can I just delete the sparsebundle that is 200GB?

Okay, I was under the impression that you had to deactivate any legacy/previous version of Filevault before you installed Lion. I don't believe that the two versions are in anyway compatible.
Do you have a backup of your prior SL volume?

  • Problems with snow leopard and file vault

I just installed snow leopard on my macbook. When I try to log on, I get a message "your home folder is protected by file vault and didn't open, it needs to be repaired. To repair folder and continue logging in click ok."   When I click ok, I get the message "You are unable to log in to the user account at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
How do you turn off the file vault if you can't log in? Any solutions are greatly appreciated.

Boot to safe mode by holding the Shift key on boot.
Then you can turn filevault off and reboot normally.

  • CANNOT FREE UP SPACE! File Vault won't turn off!

My computer is full! Even though I've deleted lots of large files, it will not free up space. Legacy file vault is turned on but I cannot turn it off due to lack of space to do so. It is asking me 300GB to turn it off! My HD is 320GB!! crazy system!
    PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ASAP!
    Thanks.
    Alessandro

    hi there,
have you emptied the paper bin in the lower right corner of your screen? Normal deletion moves files there, disk space is not freed until that paper bin has been emptied. To empty it, do a right click on the paper bin and select Empty.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris

  • HT4790 Legacy FileVault won't turn off

To use Time Machine, I need to turn off Legacy FileVault.  When I try to turn off Legacy FileVault, I get a message telling me I need 51.7GB to turn it off.  I have a 2GB computer so this message makes no sense (and I double checked it does tell me 52GB).

Temporarily copy most or all of the files from your home folder to an external drive. Delete the originals. Log out and log back in. You should then be able to deactivate legacy FV and copy the files back.
