Turning off power saver temporarily.

Is there a way to let the computer know I want to turn off power saver(dimming the screen then turning the display off) when watching DVDs? I seem to remember it was automatic with an older version of DVD player. Also is the solution applicable to VLC?

Yes, but I have to do this every time I want to watch something with either of those programs. I'm sure the old version automatically overcame this problem. At the moment I have to keep moving the mouse or touching the keyboard every few minutes.

Boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility and wipe the HD. Quit DU and restore the OS. On first boot, migrate properly, using the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • How do I TURN OFF power management???

My computer still keeps going to sleep and the only way to wake it up is to hit the reset button.  I tried enabling the keyboard-wake-up to wake it up, but then it started rebooting itself spontaneously every 15 minutes -- without any warning from Windows.  It doesn't matter whether I select S1/POS or S3/STR mode -- it does the same thing every time.  I don't want S1 or S3 power management.  I want to TURN OFF POWER MANAGEMENT COMPLETELY!  I only want Windows to turn off the monitor.  The BIOS should do nothing!
    How do I accomplish this??????????

This is strange - my understanding is you would usually use the Power button to wake the suspended PC...
Could what you are experiencing be more of a shutdown or instability?
Is it due to BIOS setting or Windows? Here are some possibilities
    1. What is your selected Power Scheme? Are your options for Turn off hard disks, System standby & System hibernates set to Never?
    2. These BIOS settings work fine for me ...
    ACPI Standby State : Auto
    Power Management/APM : Enabled
    Suspend Time Out : Disabled
    Set Monitor Events
    FDC/LPT/COM Ports : Monitor
    Primary Master IDE : Monitor
    Primary Slave IDE : Ignore
    Secondary Master IDE : Ignore
    Secondary Slave IDE : Ignore
    Set WakeUp Events
    Resume on PME : Disabled
Resume on RTC Alarm : Disabled
    Keyboard PowerOn Function : Disabled
    Mouse PowerOn Function : Disabled
    3. Does your keyboard have any of those quick buttons for Power / Sleep / Wake ? Could any of them be stuck? (Mine has these in a most inconvenient place - between Delete/End/PgDn and arrow keys, so I sometimes accidentally pressed them)

If you tried resetting the ipod and it still keeps having the same issue you described, try setting the ipod to disk mode.
Here is an article from the apple support website on setting the ipod to disk mode.

If you can get the ipod into disk mode, connect it to the computer and rrestore the ipod using itunes.
if the ipod will not go into disk mode, you can return the ipod or set the ipod up for service via the apple ipod service depot.

  • C5550 printer gives error message "Turn off power, then on again" with all flashing lights

This printer all of the sudden in constanty jamming up and gives error message "Turn off power, then on again", makes a lot of noise, and does it again.  Can't get any printing done!  I'm about to throw it out the window.  Any suggestions?

    Hey,
I have been looking around trying to find the error that is associated with the blue blinking light above the memory card slots on the lower, right-hand side of the front of the printer. I have found that it is called the photo light; but, in regards to the flashing of it, I can't seem to find what that means.
I recommend removing all memory cards from the slots, unplugging the power and leaving the printer unplugged for a while. Hopefully when you plug it all back in, everything will be ok. If not, let me know. In the meantime I'll keep looking and when I hear back from you I'll hopefully have some more information for you.
Thanks for your detailed reply, have a great day, Look forward to hearing back from you.

  • Does turning off energy saver include never letting the display to sleep? A warning alerts me that its life might shorten... Thanks!

Does turning off energy saver include never letting the display to sleep? A warning alerts me that its life might shorten... Thanks!
(I'm doing this for the recalibrating of the battery etc...)

It would shorten it's life if you leave it on year 'round. For the amount of time to calibrate the battery won't hurt it.

  • Slide bar to turn off power...

When I first set up my Ipad, there was a slide bar to turn off power. Since I have charged my Ipad the slide bar to turn off power is no longer there. Is this normal after you set up the Ipad?

Press and hold the button at the top of the iPad until the slide to power off is displayed.

  • Turning off Power-On "Chime" during start-up

    Hello fellow Mac users,
I need advice on how to temporarily and/or permanently turn off the
Power-On/Restart "Chime" during start-up on iMac (with wireless MAC keyboard).
I tried holding down the 'mute' button during start-up until Apple symbol shows up and that did not work.
I also tried 'muting' volume before restart and that also did not work.
My external speakers are shut off but the Chime sound still comes from the iMac speakers.
    Thanks,
    Edwardson

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Some folks use Statrtup Sound.
If you completely silence your Mac you remove its form of communicating issues to you during startup. The chime alerts you that the Mac has passed the POST, Power On Self Test and has found usable RAM. When it fails to do so it may sound other tones during startup to alert you to what is wrong.

  • Won't restart-must turn off power [SPLIT]

I am having the exact same problem with a new build.  The board came with bios 1.5 and software ( win7 ultimate 32 bit) would shut it down, but restarts would not work ( which made any upgrade extremely difficult when it said " your computer needs to restart).
When this was selected the  screen would lose signal, but the fans would keep spinning and no matter how long I waited nothing.  I had to push the power button to turn it off, then push it again to restart it.
So I flashed the bios to 1.8 this morning ( which went off without a hitch) but I'm still getting the same problems, shut down in windows works, restart in windows ( either from the start menus or from a popup saying you have to restart, the pc loses signals but never turns off and reboots.  when I select shut down the pc has a sound " ping" right before the fans shut off, in restart no sound, screen loses signal, the fans just keep spinning ( cpu fans and case fans)
    here are my specs
    Main Board:       Z87-G41 PC mate
Bios Version:      1.8 ( as of this morning)
Video Card:       none ( using integrated for now, will likely add one later)
    PSU:                ultra ULT-LSP550  (550V)
12v rail Rating of listed PSU: 41A 492W
CPU:  intel G3258  ( unlocked anniversary dual core pentium)
    Memory:  4 GB  Adata  1600
SSD/ HDD:  boot drive kingston 64 GB SSD/ waiting to install data drive ( seagate 500gb)
    CPU COOLER:  intel stock
    Raid Card: none
    Sound Card: integrated hd audio
Any Additional hardware plugged into your system:  none
OC: (Yes / No)  no, running at 3.2
Operating System:  windows 7 ultimate 32 bit, activated by MS
if anyone has any suggestions I would really really appreciate it.

I think Im toast.  When I power up with bios under settings the boot drive ( kingston 64 gb ssd) is not showing up on the sata port.  I
turned it off, unplugged let it sit a minute then shorted the cmos pins.  waited a minute of two, then plugged in.  the next bios I choose F1 and setup.  it now recognizes the drive on sata 2 and identifies it.  I move the hard drive ( non uefi) to the start of the boot order.  I have a bootable usb disk with the os on it and I put that second.  Everything else seems to be good in terms of the other system identification.  so i hit f10 for save and exit.  on the popup it says save and restart ?  I click yes, it exits the bios but it never restarts.  so I push the power button down to turn it off, push it again to restart and then hit delete to get into bios and the hard drive is not recognized as a kingston ssd and in the preverences sata 2 is shown as empty.
Im sorry if this is not as detailed as it should be, its been a while since I have tried to build a pc.

  • Possible to turn off power saving/screen diming?

Hi I'm new the Iphone but I find it annoying that it keeps going into standby unless I'm constantly touching it. I've found this listening to the radio (which then turns off!) but its the worst when trying to read an ebook, suddenly the screen dims then turns off.
I've tried the auto bright option but it doesn't do anything. I have the 3GS if it makes a difference.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

Turn Auto Lock to never. (In Settings).
Then watch your battery life disappear if you're not plugged in to a power source.

  • How do I turn off screen saver whilst running time machine backup?

My hard drive failed today when my MacBook Pro took a tumble from the sofa.
I have replaced it and am trying to restore from a time machine backup.
I have to use the snow leopard installation disc that came with the machine, once I get into disk utility I can format the new drive and select restore from time machine backup.
This all runs great until the screen saver kicks in, normally around 1% into the restore. This crashes the restore and gives me the grey screen of death, it's done it four times now.
Is there anyway to disable the screensaver? Or will I need to install snow leopard first and then software update and then restore from backup once I can turn off the screen saver in system properties.
I paid a lot of money for the time capsule and having these issues the first time I truly need it is disconcerting.

    Hi Mewnor,
Is there anyway to disable the screensaver?
This might help you if your computer is running Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.3). I can not help you if your computer is running Snow Leopard.
