Turning off smart guides breaks pen line

Has anybody noticed that if you switch smart guides on or off (with Cmd+U) while you are drawing with the pen tool it breaks the path. You have to go back and draw from the last anchor point. Sometimes smart guides help, sometimes they're a pain, depending on what part of a path you are drawing, so it's useful to be able to turn them on or off while you are drawing. Is there a workaround? (CS3).

Thanks Kurt and Mon. This works fine.
However, there's another thing I noticed while I was playing around with smart guide prefs:
It seems there is no way to disable Angles, not even if you try to delete all figures from the 6 boxes. At least, I can't get Custom Angles to work that way. Smart guides always seem to revert to 90° & 45° Angles. When drawing with the pen it's often useful to see where other anchor points and paths are, but constrained angles are a pain.

  • How to Turn off Smart Quotes

I am unable to turn off “smart quotes” (for the purpose of entering computer code). I have unchecked the box in System Preferences > Language > Keyboard, and in Safari and Mail under the Edit Menu > Substitutions (also in Word and TextEdit), but the smart or ”curly quotes“ continue to appear in each application. Is there any way to fix this in Mavericks? I am running OS X 10.9.3

TL;DR: AFAIK, nobody tries to use Microsoft Word for programming in Python, or programming in general, and TextEdit is dicy here at best.

That's my problem: no matter how I set the preferences in the applications, the smart quotes won't go away.
There is clearly an issue with smart quotes in your configuration.  The global smart quotes setting is not being honored, nor is any local setting that might exist.
Which particular application are you using to edit your Python code when this problem arises?
(As with programming in general, details matter here.)
Did the tools you are using also get restarted after the global settings were changed?
Why ask this stuff?  This information will allow folks to see if there's something else going on within that particular application, and it's also because there are text tools around that just won't create text files that the Python interpreter can process — whatever you're using here is probably closer to creating a plain-text file than some, as you're noticing the smart quotes here, though.  Of what you've mentioned so far, Microsoft Word is not known for its ability to create ASCII or UTF-8 text files, and TextEdit is dicy here at best as that tool is quite fond of using RTF formats.
But if it's Word or TextEdit you're using?  That won't work at all well.   TextWrangler (free) is a common choice for folks that prefer a GUI editor, or MacVim (free) or whatever emacs is current (also free) or other such if you'd prefer a more advanced editor.  (Note: vim and emacs are much more cryptic, and much more powerful editors.)  Or use the included nano editor (has an on-screen list of commands), or the integrated vim or emacs editors at the command line.   There are also Python IDE packages around, as well.  (Xcode doesn't support Python, though there are reports of some success with it.)  These tools all work, and these tools all produce the sorts of sequential text files that the compilers and interpreters can process.   In some cases, these tools also provide syntax highlighting and other features, which can be very useful when coding, too.

  • Turning off Smart quotes?

Does anyone know how to turn off smart quotes in RHX5? I've

  • Turn off FTP service via command line

We are running a Mt Lion server.  The FTP Service quit working properly.  Instead of directing users to the FTP folder specified, users are just sent to the root of the OS drive.  We attemped to turn off FTP service in the Server.app, but FTP stays running even when Server.app lists it as off.
Is there a way to turn off FTP via the command line?   We can't seem to find it. The instructions we found online for 10.7 don't work.  We've tried rebooting the server and repairing permissions but the same problem exists.

Finally, tracked it down thanks to the good people at CrushFTP http://crushftp.com
Here is the command for anyone else that may be looking.
    sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

  • Turn off alignment guides in 1 dimension?

I use the alignment guides to neatly and quickly align objects with each other on the slide, but oftentimes when lots of objects accumulate closely on the slide, it seems like every new object wants to align with everything else and it can be a big mess. Using the keyboard shortcut Command-drag temporarily turns off the alignment guides, but then it hard to precisely align objects.
My question: Is there a way to only turn off 1 dimension of the alignment guides in order to, for instance, line up a set of objects on the x-axis without triggering the y-axis alignment guides? I'm using Keynote '09 5.0.3.
    Thanks!

  • How do I turn off "Smart Cut and paste" in InDesign?

    Hi,
A programmer told me, that ID has a function called "smart cut and paste":
smart cut and paste boolean -- If true, automatically adjusts spacing among words and between words and punctuation marks when cutting and pasting text.

Unfortunately, it shows some weird text exchange behaviour when copying and pasting text.
My web and my forum search showed no results.
So: How can it be turned off?

  • How to turn off smart mail account selection?

How do you turn off the extremely annoying smart mail account selection?

On the iCloud website, set up three Rules (click the cogwheel icon at top right and choose Rules) to move all messages addressed to [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] to the Trash. It will be deleted from there after 30 days.
You can't set up an automatic bounce, but in any case please, never bounce spam. Most spam has forged 'From' addresses so all you are doing is sending yet more spam to totally innocent people (who are probably already getting a lot of bounces because of this) and making a bad situation worse. Even if the 'From' address is genuine, I very much doubt any spammer is going to remove your address from a huge list  (they certainly would get a lot of bounces from actually dead addresses) - and in any case they can probably tell it's not a genuine bounce easily enough, so now you've just confirmed that your address works. Don't bounce it - just delete and forget.

  • Turn off smart objects

    Using PS CC 2014.2.0
"Always create smart objects when placing" is turned off.
Every time I paste an image into a new PS CC file it places the image as a smart object. How do I stop this behavior?

Hi Brett and the wonderful community
I am at my wits' end and fast running out of time to complete a piece of assessed coursework for my degree. I must import multiple still images sized between 2 and 4.5 MB to my new document in order to create a composite from them. Each image requires a new layer because it must be resized. I can successfully import my 100 images using the 'file', 'scripts', 'load stack' function but PS will not let me save the file. Instead I get the following error message:
Could not save as "filename.psd" because the document is bigger than 2 gigabytes.
See help topic "Saving Files" for more information.
It happens every time! I don't have any smart objects in the file that I am aware of, only the 100 layers, plus background (a plain white layer). All I can find online are the sorts of threads that assume prior technical knowledge or a level of PS familiarity that I just don't possess, or those that tell me to alter things in the settings and I am using a university application, so I can only change things that exist within the user menus. Please please help. I have now wasted almost 3 days of precious deadline time and I am desperate.
I am especially desperate because I must also try to calculate the 'transform scale' size so that they will tessellate in A0.
    Thanks in anticipation.

  • Anyway to turn off voicemail envelope for secondary line appearance?

Has there been an update to this issue yet? Ive noticed in a couple of other older threads that this "feature" cannot be turned off.

OK, here is how I would set it up:  Saw you have one extension on 3 phones, extension 1000, for example. You take 1000 off all three phones and you give each phone a unique DN, say 1001, 1002, and 1003.  You can even modify the line labels so they still appear as 1000.  Then you setup 1000 as a hunt group pilot, setup with broadcast hunting and 1001, 1002, and 1003 as members.  And the RONA goes to voicemail box 1000, which has 1001 (and 1002 and 1003, if you want them to be able to retreive VM even through they get no notification) as an alternate extension.  And 1001 is listed as the MWI extension.
What they lose is the 'shared line' features; they can no longer see if someone else is on the line and they cannot hold a call from one phone and pick it up on another.  But it still rings on all phones, can be answered on all phones, and only the one(s) you want get the envelop.

I can't align text properly (vertically and horizontally) anymore.  The guides show up but only with reference to a contaniner - not with reference to other objects (text, buttons etc)
    Can anyone help!!?

    Hi Leon,
Can you describe the theme-changing behavior you are seeing?  Is there an error dialog about theme compilation failing?  If so, it most likely has not been updated to support the CSS namespace requirements and/or it suffers from lingering Fx-rename issues.  Are these themes that you may have downloaded from the web?  Does switching to the wireframe theme work for you?
Please file a bug detailing the steps to reproduce your issues:  http://bugs.adobe.com/flex/

  • Turning off spam notification on subjet line?

Is there a way on Exchange 2010 to turn off the potential spam/marketing warning? I do not want to turn off spam filtering itself. I could not find a setting for this in Outlook so I'm convinced it must be on Exchange.

    Hi,
    Yes, as what
VinodKP says we can remove these messages by creating transport rules. If you want to stop sending the spam/marketing warning to just one user, I recommend that we can use the Outlook rule to achieve
it. It would be more convenient to be created and managed by client user.
If you still want to turn off Spam notification, there are several
types of notifications. Please check your notification by the following article to configure or disable it:

  • [solved] How do I turn off SMART warnings in Gnome?

I run the smartd daemon for the 8 hard drives in my server. One drive has about 90 bad sectors so it will most likely fail soon. But I can't return it unless it hits 100. Anyway, in Gnome, I keep getting warnings in that notification section in the bottom that the drive is failing and it's annoying me to no end. How can I turn off these warnings? Smartd mails me every detail anyway, I really don't need these constant warnings in my desktop environment as well.

I'm not entirely sure if i got your setup right, but you could try to disable parts of the gnome-settings-daemon via dconf. Have a look at org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins, especially at "householding". Either try a higher value for "min-notify-period":
Specify a time in minutes. Subsequent warnings for a volume will not appear more often than this period.
Or uncheck "active" for a more radical solution.

  • Tip: Placing Straight Quotes without turning off Smart Quotes

I thought I was alone in this dilemma until I read a recent thread from someone wishing to easily place straight quotes into a document. Prior to this, the quickest way for me to place straight quotes into a document was to copy/paste them from a text editor. Even when you try to add straight quotes using the ASCII code for them, Frame overrides this and replaces them with smart quotes.
Last week when I was customizing the Frame 9 interface (because it is ungodly poor) I stumbled across the native command for inserting straight quotes regardless whether Smart Quotes is turned on or not. The native command is "CharStraightQuote", but you have a lot of options with how you want to implement it. Because there are so many different ways to implement this, I will describe only the default method.
There is a flyout toolbar for special symbols. The content of this flyout is controlled from your "menus.cfg" file and is near the top of the file. I believe you can add the following line anywhere within the "menus.cfg" file, but you will find similar entries about 30 lines down from the top of the file.
       <Add CharStraightQuote                <Menu SpecialSymbols>>
By the way, if you look through your "cmds.cfg" file, especially near this CharStraightQuote entry, you will find a whole bunch of similar entries that are useful and could also be added to your menus.

To insert the straight quotes directly from the keyboard (overriding Smart Quotes): press Escape, then type quotes.
(note: no need to hold down the Escape key)
