Turning off speech recognition

Is there a way to completely turn off speech recognition server? I don't use it at all and it takes a lot of memory when running.

Hi
I'm assuming that you've tried turning it off using System Preferences > Speech > Speech Recognition.
If that doesn't work then I guess you could try deleting the preference files. Look in these two folders:
- Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences and
- your user name/Library/Preferences
Look for files with names like: com.apple.speech.recognition. .. .plist
Change the .plist file extension to something else and then reboot the computer. With any luck this should clear the problem. If it makes things worse you can rename the files back to their original names.
Good luck

  • How to Switch Off Speech Recognition

I activated speech recognition just to see what it can do and got the round microphone icon in my screen. As I press Esc I can give commands.
I want to get rid of this round thing in my screen though and switch off Speech Recognition completely because I never use it.
I can not find where to switch it off. Who does?

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  This has happened to me many times.  I don't know why the circle surfaces, but the common response is false - in my preferences, Speakable items is set to OFF.  Turning any of the Speech settings on or off does not make the circle window disappear.  The only way I can get rid of it is to reinstall the operating system from scratch (not an update), which is an incredible pain.  I've done this twice to get rid of the circle, and it's back again!  This is clearly a Snow Leopard bug, since all the responses say when you go into preferences you should see that Speakable items is set to ON, and it's NOT.
Seriously, if ANYONE knows how it gets in this state, and how to get rid of it when it's not responding to preferences.  Force Quit doesn't see it.  Maybe there's a low level Console way to kill the app - I'd do anything to get rid of that circle...
GUYS - SNOW LEOPARD USERS!  I SOLVED IT!  I SOLVED IT!  I still don't know what triggers it, but here's how you get rid of it without a reinstall:
    1) Launch Activity Monitor in flat mode
    2) Look for a running task called something like SpeechRecognitionServer and select it.
    3) Hit the Quit Process button on the upper left!
Voila, that annoying circle is gone!!!
    YIPPIE!

    P. S. I just noticed that this bug still wasn't solved in Lion, so hopefully my solution will help Lion users as well.  This bug definitely didn't exist in Leopard.

  • How do I turn off faces recognition in iphoto

how do I turn off faces recognition in iphoto?  I mean forever!!

So by deleting the "Face Profile" or whatever it's called for the individual Faces keeps searching for, you think that's not a solution?
The actual pictures identified by faces are not deleted. Only the avatar and name you list to be looked for within faces is what you're removing.
Do you have a better solution? I'm all ears.

  • Turning off Speech feedback window

How do I get rid of the speech feedback window?
I have disabled everything in speech plus looked in startup items...nothing works.
Its there everytime I launch and I dont want it or need it. Its there with only Finder running.
    Any suggestions?

Hey Roam...thanks...I did all that with no effect.
    However I figured it out.
Seems I had set a few speech commands a long time ago and one of them was 'turn off speech'...so thats what I did and it worked when I relaunched.
Interesting that this overwrote all the other commands/prefs and keystrokes. Seems a bit dysfunctional to me.....I mean the whole software app
    Thanks anyhow

  • How do I turn off Speech Command for Chess?

I love playing the Chess app, but I do not use the Speech Command. The little round icon annoys me a bit. Is there a way to get rid of it?

Turn off Speakable Items in Accessibility preferences or close the window from an app that uses speech recognition. For example, if you’re using Chess, choose Chess > Preferences, and then deselect the “Allow Player to Speak Moves” checkbox.
To move the window into the Dock, double-click it or say “Minimize speech feedback window.”

  • IPhone: Is it possible to turn off Word Recognition?

Can the word recognition feature be turned off while texting? Many times it shows a word that the iPhone recognizes but it's not the word I want. It can get annoying at times. I can't find anything in the settings for turning it on or off.

When it suggests a word, there will be a little X next to it. By hitting the X you tell the phone that is not the word you want. After a few times it will learn that that is not the word you want when you are typing. Over a few weeks it will learn what words you normally use and spelling mistakes you normally make.

  • Cannot turn off speech.

I must have accidentally press a key that triggered speech to text. Now I have to bear this irritating speech for every move I made unless I turn the vol down all the way to '0'. I check the pref for speech but it was off. How do I turn this speech to text off without lowering my audio to '0'?
    Thanks in advance.

You probably turned it on by pressing Command (apple key)+F5. You can it turn it off the same way!
In System Preferences/Universal Access/Seeing you can turn Voice Over off manually.

  • How do you turn off Text Recognition in the new ExportPDF?

You used to be able to de-select it before exporting to a Word document.  Now my documents are converting with a bunch of gibberish.
Do I need to post somewhere in particular to get a response from someone with Adobe?  I really need an answer ASAP as I use this for work and there is apparently no way to call and speak to a person on the phone.
