  • Turning off speech recognition

Is there a way to completely turn off speech recognition server? I don't use it at all and it takes a lot of memory when running.

    Hi
I'm assuming that you've tried turning it off using System Preferences > Speech > Speech Recognition.
If that doesn't work then I guess you could try deleting the preference files. Look in these two folders:
    - Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences and
    - your user name/Library/Preferences
Look for files with names like: com.apple.speech.recognition. .. .plist
Change the .plist file extension to something else and then reboot the computer. With any luck this should clear the problem. If it makes things worse you can rename the files back to their original names.
    Good luck

  • Turning off Speech feedback window

How do I get rid of the speech feedback window?
I have disabled everything in speech plus looked in startup items...nothing works.
Its there everytime I launch and I dont want it or need it. Its there with only Finder running.
    Any suggestions?

Hey Roam...thanks...I did all that with no effect.
    However I figured it out.
Seems I had set a few speech commands a long time ago and one of them was 'turn off speech'...so thats what I did and it worked when I relaunched.
Interesting that this overwrote all the other commands/prefs and keystrokes. Seems a bit dysfunctional to me.....I mean the whole software app
    Thanks anyhow

  • How do I turn off Speech Command for Chess?

I love playing the Chess app, but I do not use the Speech Command. The little round icon annoys me a bit. Is there a way to get rid of it?

Turn off Speakable Items in Accessibility preferences or close the window from an app that uses speech recognition. For example, if you’re using Chess, choose Chess > Preferences, and then deselect the “Allow Player to Speak Moves” checkbox.
To move the window into the Dock, double-click it or say “Minimize speech feedback window.”

  • Cannot turn off speech.

I must have accidentally press a key that triggered speech to text. Now I have to bear this irritating speech for every move I made unless I turn the vol down all the way to '0'. I check the pref for speech but it was off. How do I turn this speech to text off without lowering my audio to '0'?
    Thanks in advance.

You probably turned it on by pressing Command (apple key)+F5. You can it turn it off the same way!
In System Preferences/Universal Access/Seeing you can turn Voice Over off manually.

  • How to Switch Off Speech Recognition

I activated speech recognition just to see what it can do and got the round microphone icon in my screen. As I press Esc I can give commands.
I want to get rid of this round thing in my screen though and switch off Speech Recognition completely because I never use it.
I can not find where to switch it off. Who does?

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  This has happened to me many times.  I don't know why the circle surfaces, but the common response is false - in my preferences, Speakable items is set to OFF.  Turning any of the Speech settings on or off does not make the circle window disappear.  The only way I can get rid of it is to reinstall the operating system from scratch (not an update), which is an incredible pain.  I've done this twice to get rid of the circle, and it's back again!  This is clearly a Snow Leopard bug, since all the responses say when you go into preferences you should see that Speakable items is set to ON, and it's NOT.
Seriously, if ANYONE knows how it gets in this state, and how to get rid of it when it's not responding to preferences.  Force Quit doesn't see it.  Maybe there's a low level Console way to kill the app - I'd do anything to get rid of that circle...
GUYS - SNOW LEOPARD USERS!  I SOLVED IT!  I SOLVED IT!  I still don't know what triggers it, but here's how you get rid of it without a reinstall:
    1) Launch Activity Monitor in flat mode
    2) Look for a running task called something like SpeechRecognitionServer and select it.
    3) Hit the Quit Process button on the upper left!
Voila, that annoying circle is gone!!!
    YIPPIE!

    P. S. I just noticed that this bug still wasn't solved in Lion, so hopefully my solution will help Lion users as well.  This bug definitely didn't exist in Leopard.

  • How do you turn off accessibilty?

I have read through some of the discussions and have found that the "Accessibility" feature is turned on either through Windows Speech Recognition or Dragon and the only way I have found to disable this is to rename the API's - Accessibility.api, ReadOutLoud.api - typically found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\plug_ins. You will then be prompted with a comment box, simply apply check to box to never remind you again. DO THIS ONLY if you don't need these features.

I do not believe you can turn off the startup/boot sound unless you had your sound set to silent before rebooting.  Side note, I miss my old Droid boot sound.  Only problem is that now you have no sound after boot unless you remember to turn it back on.  I do know that after the first several Droids Motorola actually turned down the volume of the boot sound, which was done on mine after an OS update.

  • Smart-Paste ... not what I want - can it be turned off?

It used to be that when I was in a terminal window, and I think most
other applications, I could highlight, then copy a selection of
text and have just the text data get pasted to a chosen destination.
Now, when I do this, it seems to carry the font, formatting, color
and even the URL status with it when I paste it.  This plops a
big ugly blob of text that does not fit into the destination where it
    should not be.
If I just want to cut some text and paste it in an email or a text
document this ends up ruining the formatting, putting control
characters and what-not into the destination and in general really
causing a pain in the butt.
My question is can this be turned off, over-ridden, undone or
    removed somehow?
Second, where is this controlled ... in the clip-board?  And if so,
is there a way to configure the clip-board not to do this or access
    just the text data selectively?
The answer to this for the OS ought to be to be able to cut and
paste the formatting data separately - which would be a good
thing to be able to do in many situations, such as photo manipulation,
    etc.
    Thanks.

The text I was cutting and pasting was from the text of a speech
    by FDR from Wikipedia.
But this weirdness happens a little on this page as if I grab my
text from above and paste it here whatever I do it leaves me with
    this blue background.
I think that is because there is hidden HTML in this box ... and no way
to turn that off except edit it in HTML and remove everthing.  Way
    too much effort.
Personally, I really prefer to work just in text, because we really cannot
know what is going on in the background of our typing or whatever
now and the simpler the better, especially when nothing else is wanted
    or needed.

  • New iMac: how can I get the internal mic to turn off?

I always have Facetime cameras and internal mics disabled for privacy. Cameras are easy to block, but the Sound pane doesn't allow me to disable the mic, only turn the input down to the bottom. Supposedly, its off, right?
Poking around in Prefs, I saw that my supposedly "disabled" microphone showed a response in the Dictation & Speech pane VU meter when I would snap my fingers around the bezel. Even worse, it showed a response to conversation in another room, the refrigerator starting up in the kitchen 25 feet away, and even an increase in ambient noise. Going back to the Sound prefs, the mic input is still turned "down" and doesn't show a response when I snap my fingers.
So... how is it that this supposedly defeated mic is working normally, and in fact exceeding expectations, despite being effectively turned "off" in the Sound pane?
Basically, this iMac is a very expensive bug sitting on my desk. Is there a way to properly disable the mic in the system? I can't even find the thing to block it physically, like with bezel cameras. There is no place for an external mic to plug in either, which would physically bypass any internal mic on my previous Macs.

Interested parties may want to know...
I went to the Apple Store two weeks ago for a replacement Airport Express. While I was waiting for it, I struck up a conversation with one of the store staff, and brought up the mic issue. We spent a good ten minutes going through the few ways of securing the mic, and we determined that every iMac made has the ability to continue listening evne though dictation is shut off. Unlike old Macs, you can't disable the mic in the Sound prefs. You can't turn off listening in the Dictation prefs - even though turning off "dictation" means the dictation part of the OS stops listening. The only way to definintely shut off the "listening" part is to keep the Audio Devices panel open, select Built-in Microphone, and make sure the master mute button is checked. Also, you have to leave the Dictation & Speech pane open in Preferences to watch the mic display.
Even so, going to any other preference panel and then back to Dictation & Speech means that the master mute will uncheck itelf and the mic goes back to listening mode.
The staff member was quite frustrated by this and said it appears the only way to stop the iMac from listening with any certainty would be to block the mic, just like millions of users block the Facetime camera with a piece of tape.
I suppose I should admit defeat at this point, and maybe I should have long ago recognized that no matter what the system tells us, we shouldn't trust it. Simply clicking on a radio button to disable what in all actuality is really a room bug shouldn't have us letting out a sigh of relief and saying "Wow I'm glad I was able to stop that security issue by trusting the machine to let me know when it was listening."
In another year my Apple Care will run out. Then I'm going to take this iMac to my local authorized service center to have a hybrid drive installed and the internal memory maxed out. While they're in there, I'll have the mic physically removed.

  • I recently sold my Mac Air to a friend, he wants to use iTunes Match, but it says he can't for another 40  days because it was attached to my account.  How can I get that turned off so that he can use his account and turn on iTunes match.

I reecntly spold my mac book air,to a friend, when he tries to use itunes match it says the computer is registersed to another user and cannot be done for another 40+ days.  How do i get that to turn off.  I have unregistered it under my account.
    thanks s

You either have an incredibly complex computer setup or I think you are confusing terminology here.  If you have iTunes set to share your library with others in your iTunes preferences then other computers in the area will see it as an item when they are running their iTunes and have it set to check for shared libraries.  Your husband is probably seeing this when running iTunes on his computer.  You can disable this sharing on your computer and/or he can set his not to pick up shared libraries.
By the way, an iTunes account is something you log into when you want to buy something from Apple.  On your computer it is simply your iTunes collection or your iTunes application.  So you need to turn off sharing in your iTunes application preferences.
Your husband is seeing "his" iTunes collection when running iTunes, but it is possible he doesn't have anything in it if it is a brand new computer.

  • My Outlook/iCloud calendar invites to others appear to work on my end and sync with my PC and mobile, but when other people "accept" the invite, it will not populate/add in to their calendar. How can i fix this without turning off iCloud?

My Outlook/iCloud calendar invites to others appear to work on my end and sync with my PC and mobile, but when other people "accept" the invite, it will not populate/add in to their calendar. How can I fix this without turning off iCloud?
I am at a new office that uses Outlook (not Outlook Exchange) which does not sync with my mobile... I just got iCloud set up on my PC to sync my contacts, calendar, reminders, etc... The sync worked (not without flaws, but the other issues seem solvable... I think), so that i can now see all my appointments on both my phone and on my PC. The problem I am having is that iCloud moved all of my calendar items from Outlook into iCloud calendar and now when I send out meeting/calendar invites the recipients may accept them, but the meeting does not get added to their calendar. This is a huge problem and may mean that i need to turn off iCloud.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

I am replying to my own post here as I seem to have fixed the problem.
I do have some calendars that are shared. Some of those are shared with users who have time zone support turned on. So i activated time zone support on my iphone, then deleted my icloud subscription. I then signed in to icloud again and voila... problem solved.
It is a weird one as the other calendar views were always fine and when you opened an event that appeared in the wrong day (on list view), the correct date of the event was shown in the information...
one more bug in a complicated system I guess
