"turning off" the backlight

is it possible to "turn off" the backlight of the screen?
finding it very difficult to watch a dvd for example as I get very poor contrast and dark/blacks
adjusting the brightness hasn't solved the problem and I can't find a "contrast" function anywhere?
is this possible to adjust at all?

"Won't it become almost unviewable without a backlight?"
I know what you mean, the question was really whether you can adjust the contrast, it's fine when you're doing any other task / web etc but I only noticed the poor quality when trying to watch a film on "real" dvd. otherwise it's all fine.
BSteely's response pretty much confirms we have to live with it. Maybe this screen should be just a little smaller 12inch would be better probably!

    ipod nano 6 gen hangs when turning off the backlight. That is, it does not respond to button presses on the touch screen. He also has just a white screen instead of the desktop display. Tried to rearrange the screen from another Ipod nano, but nothing came of it - all the same ... What should I do?

    Hi Rc_Drifter,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!  The article below will help you troubleshoot the issue you are having with your iPod nano. Restoring the device may resolve the backlight issue as well.
    iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
    Display shows a white screen
    Try putting the iPod into disk mode:
    Reset the device (press the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black—about eight seconds).
    When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk mode.
    While the device is in disk mode, sync it to iTunes and try to restore.
    I hope this information helps ....

  • I have a iPod nano 3rd generation. I accidentally turned off the backlight so there is no screen showing

    What are the steps to go to the backlight in settings and turn it on?

    The screen is still showing.  If you bring the iPod near a bright light, or shine a flashlight on it, you will be able to read the screen with no backlight.
    On my 5th gen iPod nano, it is
    Settings -> General -> Backlight -> [select setting]

  • I accidentally press Off  the Backlight in my 3rd generation  iPod Nano, how can I turn On the Backlight again?

    I accidentally press Off the Backlight in my 3red generation iPod Nano, how can I turn it On again? Appreciate any help. Thanks.

    What do you mean you turned off the backlight?  How did you do that?
    Have you tried a hard reset to see if that takes care of it?  To this, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Can I Turn OFF the Glowing Apple Logo?

    I like the logo, don't get me wrong. It's that I'm a college student and I know I would be kind of distracted by a glowing apple. What do you guys think? Any solutions?

    Abi,
    You can't turn off the glowing apple without turning off the backlight on the LCD display. If you do this, then you can't see the LCD display.
    Any good instructor will only be distracted by a glowing apple for about 2.54 seconds. They'll get used to it pretty quick, especially if they are already used to other students taking notes with a laptop.
    Any fellow student who is distracted by your glowing apple is looking in the wrong direction. Don't worry about them, they probably have ADD, and would be distracted by a flying insect.
    Seriously, my experience is that people will comment on what a nice looking computer it is . . . but when it comes down to the time to be serious it's not all that distracting.

  • How do I completely turn off the backlit keyboard without using F5 and F6?

    I believe my keyboard short circuited after a spill this weekend. I'm currently using a usb keyboard from Apple. I have disabled the keyboard, on my laptop, now I want to completely turn off the backlight. I've looked in the settings and can't seem to find anything. Thanks.

    hi mtbomb,
    hi Can you while the Power LED is blinking hold the power down don't let it go until the light disappeared.
      Technically the Yoga13 should turn off while holding down the power. at least 10 to 15 sec.
    I would suggest calling Technical Support if the above steps did not resolve the issue.
      It's possible that when you turn on the system, it is not going to sleep but the blinking indicates failure.
    Best regards

  • Lenovo mt-m3167-AJ8 turning off the ACPI

    Hi
    I have been trying to install ESXI 5.1 or 5.5 but I get to a stage where I get 2ACPI Initialising" and it hangs.
    I need to know how to turn this off in the BIOS or add the options into the installer.
    I have been into the power setting in the BIOS but cannot find anything in there regarding the ACPI but I did go and turn everything off in there, set the HDD to IDE instad of AHCI (I think it was) but still got the issue.
    I have flashed the BIOS and turned pretty much everything off but still no luck. I have done a Google search and this normally happens on certain MOBO's but they can just turn the ACPI of and it works fine, but I just cannot find this setting.
    If anyone can help you will be saving me alot of time and research
    please and thankyou
    Adam

    Thanks for the reply.  With brightness at its lowest the "black screen" is still too bright. The normal screens are now too dim.
    I just do not understand why Apple does not allow an app to turn off the backlight. I see no downsides to allowing this.  It is really just a policy change.

  • Turning on the backlight with backlight timer off

    With the backlight timer set on off, there is a feature to turn on the backlight by holding the menu button. I remember doing that a while ago, but my ipod no longer does that anymore. Now with the backlight timer off, and i hold the menu button it no longer does that (it just goes to the main screen). I've tried reseting the ipod, but the feature does not come back.

    The only way I can think of to get the feature back is to "update" using an older updater, such as the one that came with your CD.
    Reinstall the updater from the CD that came with your iPod would give you an older update that would contain the feature your looking for. Also using the "previous updaters" feature in the iPod folder on your computer would have the same effect. Update the iPod with one of these. However, bear in mind that newer features such as the volume limiter that are on the new 1.1.1 update would not be available.

  • My MBP doesn't go to sleep, only turns off the display

    So I recently upgraded to 10.9.2 from 10.6.8. I have MacBook Pro mid 2010. I used to use InsomniaX to disable sleep when my lid was closed. It worked great, I could disable it anytime. Now after upgrading OS X I had to upgrade to newest InsomniaX so it worked. It use to work good, but when I wanted to disable it and have my MBP go to sleep I sometimes had issues.
    Decided to uninstall it completely and try other apps - I installed NoSleep, but noticed that when I disable it then it won't go fully sleep.
    Instead it just turns off the display and keyboard backlights, I hear my fans going.
    I tried to uninstall everything completely - from any traces of InsomniaX, and as well NoSleep. I did try to reset SMC and PRAM. Now when I close the lid or go to apple menu and chose Sleep - I still can hear the fans going, the display is off, the light on the right side of the MacBook case is turned on (instead of flashing, like it used to when it slept) - dimmed when I Sleep via Apple menu, bright when I close the lid.
    What can I do to somehow revert to the default setting so my MBP can go to sleep?

    OK I solved it.
    I followed instructions from http://superuser.com/questions/214943/what-is-preventing-my-macbook-from-sleepin g/409481/
    Go to Utilities in the Applications folder and open the "Terminal" app.
    Type pmset -g and hit Enter
    If "sleep" has 0 next to it and the words "imposed by" or "prevented by ; The number next to the imposed by is the process ID causing the problem. Copy that number.
    Type ps -e | grep <process ID here> and hit Enter. This will list all running processes that have that ID (will also include the grep process)
    For me it turned out to be Internet Sharing enabled that prevented my MBP from sleeping.

  • Turning off the keyboard illumination

    Is there any way to turn off the illumination of the keys with one key press? On my old MBP, There was an additional function key that acted like a mute button. It's annoying to have to hit the dimmer or brighter key 5 or 6 times to get it to where I want or turn it off. Is there a work around for that or did Apple just drop the ball on this one?

    Sorry, but all I saw was two separate posts saying "Apple dropped the ball on this one" when there really was no ball to be dropped in the first place. If you hold the dimmer key for one second the backlight will turn off from most levels. Apple generally is not in the business of putting a million keys on computers and cluttering up the machine for things that are not necessary.
    I say, there are better uses for function keys; that's all I was trying to get at.

  • For some reason, since last nite, my Ipod doesn't recognize when i have turned OFF the hold...it still reads as hold

    my Ipod doesn't recognize when i have turned OFF the hold...it still reads as hold..any ideas?
    thanks

    A Reset (in link from previous post) is not a Restore.  It does not erase the iPod.  A Reset is THE method to "re-boot the whole system."
    The reason for the Hold switch has nothing to do with turning an iPod ON or OFF.  It exists because most iPods have touch-based controls.  The Hold switch is there to lock the controls, in situations when the iPod is playing music and you don't want to inadvertently touch the controls while handling the iPod.
    Pressing and holding the Play/Pause button turns an iPod OFF.  But I hardly ever manually turn OFF my iPod (except for my iPod shuffle).  I just stop playing music and leave it alone.  The display backlight goes off by itself within a few seconds, and if the controls are not touched, the iPod soon goes into the same power saving mode as turning it OFF manually.

  • How do I turn off the digital clock?

    I've been dealing with the new 3rd generation iPod Nano's lately. One thing I get asked a lot is how to turn off the clock that comes up after the iPod has been running awhile.
    To be more specific: When a running 3rd generation iPod Nano has not been touched for 90 seconds the display will change to a digital clock with a picture of the battery level below it. (the 2nd generation Nano's did not do this). It only goes away if the iPod controls are touched again.
    Is it possible to turn of this "auto-clock" function so that the song name/artist/album info stays on the display instead? I can't figure out how do it, and the customer's keep asking me about it.

    No, it's not currently possible to turn the screen saver clock off. However, if you set the backlight to "Always On", the screen saver will never turn on. However, this will drain the battery more quickly.

  • Udev rules to turn off keyboard backlight on Asus UX32VD AFTER login

    Hi,
    I would like to turn off the keyboard backlight everytime my laptop starts.
    I looked at :
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/As … _Backlight
    So I created a rule :
    /etc/udev/rules.d/kbd_backlight.rules
    SUBSYSTEM=="leds", ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="asus::kbd_backlight",DRIVERS=="asus-nb-wmi", ATTR{brightness}="0"
    It works quite fine, after the boot the keyboard turns OFF.
    But at GNOME login it goes ON again.
    I found this :
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ba … ht_service
    and masked
    systemctl mask systemd-backlight@leds:asus::kbd_backlight.service
    No more success...
    On grep later I masked this one :
    systemctl mask sys-devices-platform-asus\x2dnb\x2dwmi-leds-asus::kbd_backlight.device
    Nothing new.
    On more grep and I commented this :
    /lib64/udev/rules.d/99-systemd.rules
    # SUBSYSTEM=="leds", KERNEL=="*kbd_backlight", TAG+="systemd", IMPORT{builtin}="path_id", ENV{SYSTEMD_WANTS}+="systemd-backlight@leds:$name.service"
    I tried to understand a bit more with this, but without success:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ud … f_a_device
    udevadm info -a -p /sys/class/leds/asus\:\:kbd_backlight
    Udevadm info starts with the device specified by the devpath and then
    walks up the chain of parent devices. It prints for every device
    found, all possible attributes in the udev rules key format.
    A rule to match, can be composed by the attributes of the device
    and the attributes from one single parent device.
    looking at device '/devices/platform/asus-nb-wmi/leds/asus::kbd_backlight':

    Any idea ?
    Thanks!

    This is driving me crazy...
    At GRUB time the keyboard backlight goes on.
    UDEV SCRIPT
    /etc/udev/rules.d/kbd_backlight.rules
    SUBSYSTEM=="leds", ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="asus::kbd_backlight",DRIVERS=="asus-nb-wmi", ATTR{brightness}="0"
    => turns it off later, more or less when the filesystem is loaded, but when gdm (login/passwd) starts it turns on again.
    SYSTEMD SCRIPT
    After some fight with systemd I could do a script (the tricky part was to start it at the good "level")
    /etc/systemd/system/kbd_backlight_off.service
    [Unit]
    Description=Turns off the keyboard backlight
    Requires=upower.service graphical.target network.target
    After=upower.service graphical.target network.target
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    RemainAfterExit=no
    ExecStart= /usr/bin/dbus-send --type=method_call --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower /org/freedesktop/UPower/KbdBacklight org.freedesktop.UPower.KbdBacklight.SetBrightness "int32:0"
    [Install]
    WantedBy=graphical.target
    => useless, adds nothing to udev (standalone it has the same effect than the udev script)
    DESKTOP AUTOSTART SCRIPT
    .config/autostart/kbd_backlight_off.desktop
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Exec=dbus-send --type=method_call --print-reply=literal --system --dest='org.freedesktop.UPower' '/org/freedesktop/UPower/KbdBacklight' 'org.freedesktop.UPower.KbdBacklight.SetBrightness' "int32:0"
    Hidden=false
    X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
    Name[en_US]=kbd_backlight_off
    Name=kbd_backlight_off
    Comment[en_US]=kbd_backlight_off
    Comment=kbd_backlight_off
    => it turns if off after the login, but when the background wallpaper is displayed it goes on again...
    Shouldn't be so difficult to turn the keyboard backlight off, from the boot time... What am I missing ???
