Turning off the wireless aspect of the westell 7500

I have a westell 7500 modem/router. I have been using it for wireless connection for the past year. I have recently found out that the connection using  WEP and even the WPA security codes are not safe or rather those codes are easy to crack. I would now like to connect to my computer using only a hardline connection. My question is about the westell 7500 modem/router.  Is there a way to disable the wireless signal so it is not active while still using the hardline connection to the modem ? Or do I need to buy a different modem altogether without wireless capabilities?
Thank you for your help.

I am not sure, but I believe so.
#1 In the router go to Wireless Setup.
#2 Check Disable Wireless and press Apply.

    Hi,
You may not have a wireless network adapter.
If it is not in Network Adapters and you have no Device Manager errors or disabled devices under Network Adapters then that would be the case.

  • Satellite L600: How can I turn off the main Wireless Communication Switch?

Hello! Would be very grateful for any help....after struggling for 3 months I finally signed up here hoping to get some help.
    I have a new Satellite L600/ Win7 Home Premium.
My questions is that I can not find where the MAIN wireless switch is in order to turn wireless off COMPLETELY.
Everytime I start up, the wireless (orange) light switches on automatically.
I have to wait till start up finish and manually turn it off by Fn-F8.
When I open ConfigFree, (or Connectivity doctor), the diagnosis on the bottom left says [STATUS" Wireless Communication Switch: ON]
This tells me the main switch is somehow still ON.
I called Toshiba twice and they couldn't find it either.
They said the new versions of BIOS doesn't allow it...? And for this model there is no physical switch built on the PC itself.
I have looked everywhere and did the following:
    (1) Disable the adapter from Device manager.
    (2) In HWSetup, where there used to be an option to click the wireless switch off, it is not there anymore.
    (3) I went into BIOS setup and could find nothing remotely related to wireless/bluetooth to switch.
I'm just wondering why there is a laptop with wireless switch ON permanently? But if it's ON, there must be a way to switch it off. Press Fn-F8 every time on start-up is not a long term solution as risk is I'll forget one day).
As my last laptop was hacked before it is top priority that I know how to turn off ALL wireless function. So even if I have to do it via Commands, I will try it. Also, I'm not sure if anyone else experience the same with this model, or is this a defect in my particular PC?
Any help or same experience will be much appreciated, thank you.
I disabled the adapter in the device manager.

Hi thanks for your replies! Sorry if I'm slow on the forum, at first I couldn't find where my thread went! Apparently it's moved to under Wireless. Is there alert message to let us know when my question is being moved?
Thanks Paolo30, I am glad to know that Fn-F8 is enough. when I check Network Connections, the Atheros adapter is 'disabled'. Sorry may I ask if WLan card you are talking about in device manager = Atheros adapter? (Despite reading furiously on books to patch up my ignorance on the wireless last few weeks, still not sure the difference between 'adapter' and 'card'... :) Are they the same thing?
Thanks Xardas. I checked the status in device manager and Atheros adapter is 'disabled'. I'm glad to know everything is ok if I see that! :) As my laptop was tampered wirelessly (and I don't know how they did it), I bought a new one and it's important for me to know it's 100% safe. Still, I want to tell Toshiba engineers it would be great to find out where this mysterious Switch is. It's not good to feel there is some sort of wireless capacity always ON and my PC may be emitting some wireless signals for serious baddies?

This past month I have been having problems connecting to my home wireless connection. I have a MacBook Pro OSX Version 10.6.8. Previously I had no problems whatsoever. I have tried unplugging the wireless router, turning off the wirless airport, deleting the network name from my list of servers and trying to reconnect this way. These methods have worked temporarily, but the same problem keeps coming back. Most of the time my personal wireless connection does not even come up among the list of available networks. My fellow flatmates have PCs and both of them are able to connect to the network without problem.
The router is a d-link model DIR-615. I am not tech savy, so if any other information need to be provided in order to better understand my situation, please let me know.
    Please help me!

If I open the list of networks in a window it says "connection timeout," but if I just select it from the drop down it tries for awhile and then stops with no prompt. When I try to run network diagnostics it says "sorry, we can't connect to the internet" (or some solution-free variation of that)

  • Is it possible to turn off the wireless signal on the Airport Extreme?

Is it possible to temporarily turn off the wireless signal being emitted from an Airport Extreme whilst still remaining connected to the internet via ethernet? If so, what do you need to do to turn off the wireless signal?
Also, how strong is the wireless signal? If placed in a basement of a residential property, is it likely that the signal would reach two floors above?
Thanks very much for your answers.

Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located just under the row of icons
    Wireless Mode = None
Update to save your new settings
You can reverse the process to turn the wireless back on when you are ready.

It's just not possible to accurately predict wireless performance in advance for any installation. A guess would be that the signal will be very weak, and likely unusable, but you won't know for sure until you try it out in your house.

  • N95 - Turn off the search for available wireless n...

    Hi,
This is a strange problem - I think...
My N95, will at randon times, and not very often, automatically search for and detect wireless networks in my area, which will then prompt me to select one.
I have turned the Wireless LAN availability setting to never search for Wireless LANS - which was previously set to scan for networks every 5 minutes. (Under Tools-settings-connection-wireless LAN)
The bizarre thing about it all, is that it will often automatically search and detect wireless networks when my phone has been on charge for a long period of time, and not normally at any other period of time.
Does anybody know if there is a further setting somewhere that I could change? or perhaps point me in the right direction, but I do realise that this could well be a unique problem.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.Message Edited by t2303 on 07-May-200710:58 PM

Hello. I have a wireless network at home and have connected my N95 in the past.
I did too turned off the ability to search for Wireless Networks from the STAND BY SCREEN but I have noticed that an icon with 4 squares appeared. I was puzzled and went through the manual to check what it meant. It meant that there were available wireless networks in the area close by, obviously my home network.
Note: since my N95 connects automatically to my network it never asked for a password or connection.
If the above sounds like your problem try the following:
Press the menu button and navigate to
Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Wirelesl LAN
and set "Show WLAN availability" to NEVER.
This helped me on saving on battery.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

  • Can I turn off the wireless on my Time capsule? Could I then use it as an XHD backup on a different wifi router network?

I would like to turn off the wifi on my Time Capsule, use another, more powerful router, but still use the TC  as an XHD for backing up my files. Is this possible?  thanks.

The TC is now and always a network drive.. but there is no reason you cannot turn off wifi in the TC and use it plugged into another router. The only thing I would say is that using the TC wireless can still be worthwhile.. if you can get it close enough to the computer, then either ethernet or TC wireless will prevent the backups from slowing your network..
If you are going to use it on only a single computer, you can plug it in by ethernet and setup as a secondary network.. but IMHO you may as well buy a USB drive and be done with it. The external drive is faster and more reliable for backups than the network drive.

  • After I connect with my iPhone (3GS 5.0.1) to any Ad-hoc wireless Network then walk away out of the reach of my wifi network, my iPhone can't find any wifi Network afterwards, only by turning off the iPhone completely and turning on again.

After I connect my iPhone (3GS 5.0.1) to any Ad-hoc wireless Network then walk away out of the reach of my wifi network, my iPhone can't find any wifi Network afterwards, only by turning off the iPhone completely and turning on again.
switching off wifi and on again or going into airplane mode did't help!
This problem happens only with ad-hoc wifi networks not with normal ones.
(Ad-Hoc network was created on XP Computer)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Sorry, but the 169.x.x.x IP address is internally generated by the iPod (and iPhone) and indicates that a network has been detected but no IP address has been issued. Your friends iPhone was not connected to your ad hoc network either - it connected to the internet through the 3G network.
You should read through the Vista help screens on ad hoc networking for some insight how this works. You should be able to get some ideas there.
In the mean time, $40 or less will buy you a very capable wireless router with four Ethernet ports and will simplify your network tremendously. Having used Windows ICS for a long time, the addition of a router and a real network simplified things so much.

  • Turn off the wireless??

EveningNew to forums and new to Sky (came from BT after many years) so hello to you all. Not going to knock Sky (yet) but just have a quick question; On my old BT router you could turn off the wireless signal between certain times which made it easier for us as the children could not access I-Pods etc after lights out but still use the broadband cabled into my PC. Is anyone aware of a similar feature on the Sky router - I have had a quick look but cant find anything... Thanks in advance

    Hello All,
    Thanks for getting in  touch.
@Gary0903, great to see that you have joined Sky Broadband. Thanks for your feedback with regards to the timer, I can certainly pass this feedback on to the relevant team. In the meantime it would require you to manually go in to turn the wireless on and off using the details that stantheman2k12 supplied.
@SkyMJR, welcome to Sky have you managed to run through the steps that stantheman2k12 has supplied to turn the wireless off at certain times? There is no current timer that can be set to do this automatically.
@deecorbett123, I hope you have managed to turn the wireless back on. As caesarome has mentioned you required a direct connection to the router to allow access the router status page (192.168.0.1) to turn the wireless back on.
If you have any further queries please get back to us.
    Thanks,

Can I turn off the wireless and use the wired connections at the same time?
This is to avoid transmission when I work without the need for wireless

Yes, you can. Just open the web interface of the router. On your browser type the IP address of your router, usually http://192.168.1.1 go to wireless tab and disable it.

  • I have a WRT54GC, and our wireless connection to the x360 is lost anytime we turn off the PC.

I have a WRT54GC that is hooked properly to the cable modem (adelphia) according to all literature... but, our wireless connection to the x360 is lost anytime we turn off the PC, which shouldn't happen. The router is connected directly to the motor. modem. We can be on line on with the pc and x360 at the same time and we have the internet connection. But both connections will also free from time to time on us. The cable HSI was just installed and we are new to this. Any assistance would be great! I'm taking my laptop home this weekend to see if I can get on wireless with it. Also (sorry) all the lights are working as they should according to the router software, but when I put the cd in ran the wizard, it tells me it can't find the router connected to my pc. I'm going batty with this. Thanks.

Hi ... Mac address cloning is enabled on my router - so I guess that could be a problem, and the filmware version is 1.02.5 - we just installed this thing and haven't done any type of upgrades.
A little history - adelphia didn't connect properly - turning off the pc killed the wireless router connection and then if I hooked right into the cable modem from the pc, I didn't get a connection. So, we unplugged everything and started out fresh following the install wizard and the pc now sees the router. After that, my laptop didn't lose it's connection when the pc was shut down either. So ... the xbox was next. It seems that when we have the WEP enabled, the xbox 360 can not connect to xbox live. We did a media test first it passes the connection to the wireless network and takes the WEP key, but it fails when looking for the IP address. All DHCD information is enabled. So, we disabled the WEP and ran the console test - and it passed. We then did the media test and it obtained the IP address this time, but then failed the media connect (whatever the next test is). Not sure we actually need the media text or just the xbox live test.
I'd like to be able to use the WEP security, but we can't go live when it is enabled.
We are new to this, so appreciate any assistance!

  • How can I turn off the monitor but not the computer on my touchsmart 310..

I leave my computer on at night to keep wireless network going, but I want to turn off just the monitor. All of the advice I've seen is to turn off the touchscreen feature -not the monitor itself. Thank you.

You can set the timing for the display to turn off.
    Try this:
    Click:
    Start.
    Control Panel.
    Hardware and Sound.
    Power Options.
On the left bar you'll find Choose when to turn off the display.
At Turn off the display:  there is a drop dowm menu to choose the number of minutes before the display turns off.  Make your selection.
Try that and see if it works for you.
