Turning on iMac gives blank screen and green light switches to yellow blink

i recently received one of the older iMac's (torquise color) from my girlfriends work and was told it worked but whenever i turn it on the screen just stays black and the power light is green for a few seconds then goes to yellow and blinks a few times then back to green and repeats its self, any ideas of what could be wrong? if more info needed on iMac model let me know. all help is appreciated. thank you! -Jeff

If the display stays dark, it could be a problem with your iMac's analog video board. This is the component that powers and provides the high voltage needed to drive the CRT display. If it becomes faulty, the iMac does not pass the initial power-up self test. It is the most common failure for CRT iMacs.
Your symptoms are a bit different. I have not heard of the button going back to green and repeating the cycle.
Does this iMac G3 have a slot-loading optical drive, or a tray-loading drive? "Turquoise" makes it sound like the original ("Bondi Blue") tray-loader. It would be helpful to know, since the older tray-loaders are completely different in internal design from the newer slot-loaders.

  • Ipod turned off mid song - blank screen and wont restart

I have a 3rd generation ipod nano - used quite regularly but it has not sustained any known damages (not been in contact with water - not been dropped). I updated my ipod today - bought 9 songs and they synced in no problems. I was listening to the ipod in a doc for about an hour and then during one song the ipod suddenly cut out mid song and I cannot get it going again since.
The ipod has a fully blank screen - totally black.
I have gone through the steps via ipod - pressing inner circle and menue keys at same time. I have connected the ipod to the computer. I have re-started my computer - nothing...still blank black screen.
I tried contacting tech support via apple but it won't recognise my serial number! Its an authentic ipod - bought in an electronic shop.
The serial number is on both the origonal packaging and the ipod - but is not recognised by apple.
I am so upset - don't know where to go from here! I have years worth of music on this ipod which I am very worried about losing..and cannot really afford to dish out for a new nano right now.
    Any suggestions for me?

This worked for a day but has now locked me out again. Tried to check a few things and now have a blank display with a grey world flashing up in the middle of the screen. Now and then it changes to a grey folder. Cannot stop this happening. Computer is unusable. Mick

    Hi,
I got 24" iMac running OS X 10.5 and Win 7. Last night I was running windows playing some game when screen gone totaly black for unknown reason and iMac froze.
After that booting to OSX it caused grey screen just after a couple of seconds when the desktop has showed. Booting from recovery CD causes the same at the point when you see "Loading Apple" thingie.
I did extended apple hardware test and it showed nothing.
They only way for me to get online and post this message is getting Win7 into a safe mode or VGA mode without NVIDIA driver loaded. Btw when booting win7 normaly it goes black screen after the desktop loaded.

    Reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

After iOS7 upgrade, iTunes only gives blank screens.  And Netflix won't load.  Any idea on what to do?

Yep. I did some more poking around and found that one. Downloaded it and tried to run it and got more errors. Did some more searching and found a fix for the installer on Vista. Ran the fix and tried the ipod software again. It got further, but then hung up again. I'm still trying to figure this all out. Anyone got any answers it'd be much appreciated.

  • Startx & gdm give blank screen

I'd like to get GNOME installed for a GUI environment. Proving difficult. Anybody have any idea how to help me?
    typing "startx" gives blank screen
setting "systemctl enable gdm" gives blank screen after boot
setting "systemctl start gdm" gives blank screen
I installed brand new Arch (2014.10.01) following the wiki step by step. Everything worked okay. So I set out to get gnome installed.
    To install gnome, I installed:
    xorg-server
    xorg-xinit
    xf86-video-intel
    libva-intel-driver
    libva
    lib32-mesa-libgl (after uncommenting pacman.conf)
    gnome (with all 1-40)
I tried adding "exec gnome-session" to the ~./xinitrc file and then rebooting but this did nothing.
Did I miss installing something? Some file need configuring?
By the way, how do I get internet at boot automatically without having to type "dhcpcd <ethernet-adapter-name here>" after every boot?

Not sure how to fix it, but you should need the base install, xorg-server, gnome, and I usually include the option xorg-server-utils but that shouldn't be needed?
At that point you should be able to enable/start GDM and if everything goes good it will work. Obviously not your case, I just say this to point out that so far your not wrong...
No idea on that one, but first I would be looking at making sure I had the right video drivers for xorg (see the xorg wiki page about identifying video card with 'lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D' ), and look up the logs to see what X is actually doing and if its running and just outputing to the wrong display or if there are errors, ect...
Internet kind depends on how/what your trying to do, however in your case the most normal thing would likely be to install network manager, then you will probably also have to download a gnome network manager applet (I think its network-manager-applet)
This will give you the normal system tray icon to manage your network manager settings.
With only a command line I typically prefer wifi-menu for ease.

  • Clicking Google search results in a frame gives blank screen

The back story to this is that i use Firefox and I use a simple frames home page where my fave links(ebay, craigslist links mainly) are on the left frame of the screen and google opens up on the right frame. When I do a search with google it does what it does and gives me its search results. Normally when i click on one of the Google results the frame on the left stays and the right side goes to the link i clicked on. Not today though. All I get is a blank screen and Done in the status bar. The left frame is still there. This occurs on 2 computers. IE does not have a problem. Is it Google? Firefox? Or a combo of both?
Here's the code for my main frames page. I dont need to include the 2nd one.

  • 13" MBP died. Only a black blank screen and blinking lights are visible. Any ideas??

My friends MBP died the other night.  He put it on sleep mode one night and the following morning, and when he went to turn it on the following morning it would't.  Only a black blank screen and blinking lights.  There is no sound or anything.  BTW it is a mid-2010 MBP, no added hardware, everything stock. It wasn't custom configured, and I believe he upgraded to Lion earlier this year.  I read somewhere that depending how quickly the lights are blinking could indicate a specific problem.  Is this true? He is planning on taking it an Apple store, but figured we would try here first since it is a bit of a drive, and the warranty has expired. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  We are just trying to get an idea of what we are dealing with. Thank you!

    Looks like hardware problem.

    Hi Bucky16,
If you haven't already done so, you may want to reset the iPhone:

If the above does not resolve your issue, the next best step will be to restore your iPhone using a computer with iTunes:
