Turning Photos into Paintings

Which software is better at turning images into paintings? Adobe Photoshop CS6 or Adobe Illustrator?

Why make it a competition? They're both better! ;-)
I would suggest it depends on what you intend to express (including output production), and your comfort level with the applications. Russell Brown has a video showing ways to make more traditional media referenced painting with Photoshop CS6 here: http://av.adobe.com/russellbrown/PaintingAssistant_SM.mp4
Illustrator also have some great tools for making natural media brushstrokes. Here's demo from AI CS5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMVCjMm2xWo

  • Issues in iMovie with turning photos into a video to be exported.

    Hi all,
Currently working on my iPad solo as I travel around and am having trouble with imported photos from my dsl camera being cropped in iMovie.
I spent a fair amount of time trying to stop the ken burns effect, which I have managed to do. Following the help. However because these photos were not taken on iPad I am suspecting that they're cropped to some ratio.
Essentially what I am trying to do is turn about 100 of my photos into a short movie, which just flicks through photos fairly quickly. I have managed to do this to sp,e degree, however iMovie just shows only the top left hand corner of the photo not the whole image. Ive tried zooming out to the whole extent of the photo, however this hasn't worked. The particular photos I have initially worked with are in portrait.
If you need anymore info on what I've tried or am trying to do please ask
Thanks for any help to what I think is a pretty simple problem.
    Cheers.
    Do

Sadly iMovie iOS does not allow letterbox or Pillarbox of photos.
What this means is that you can only zoom to the shortest width or height.
That means it cuts off part of the image if it isn't 16:9, as you've discovered.
I suggest you use a different app to create your movie, essentially a slideshow app will do it better.
I have suggested a fix to Apple before, but please also ask them to change this:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie_ios.html
It won't be fixed in a hurry though.
I don't know of any apps that can create movies of photos sorry.
I have used Splice (there is a free version) but I think this is not a native iPad app.
It can create 4:3 videos, and I believe that it can show full photos; not cropping.
I suggest you ask in the main iPhone forum for apps that can create movies of photos, and explain that you want them to be shown full, with black bars if needed.
Hopefully someone else knows of a better app to create your movie.
The only last alternative is to edit the photos in a photo app to have the correct aspect, and have black bars.
But this would be just the slowest and silliest option.
Sorry there is no easy answer for you.

  • Turn photo into painting

    Hi!
I have been wondering how I could use Photoshop to create an effect that makes photos look like paintings. Especially in that style that could be seen on 60s/70s movie posters. I attach two pictures so that you hopefully get an idea of what I mean.
I have tried the watercolor filter but that did not really create the result I was looking for. Any suggestons on tutorials or plugins to use?
    Thanks.
PS. Ofcourse the best way would maybe be to paint a picture instead of "cheating" with Photoshop, but... I guess I just don't have that skill (and time for it)...

Unfortunately, I don't know of a filter that will do the job but I suggest you check out a book - "Creative Photoshop CS4" by Derek Lea especially Chapter 13 "Simulated Screen Printing". The whole book is full of great ideas.
    Have fun with it.

  • I am trying to transfer my photos from old mac to new mac.  I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!  What happened?

And how do I turn off FACES?

I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!
According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac
    That is it

Greetings from a Photoshop Newbie. I need a computer, preferably a Mac laptop, with some serious processing power. I take photos with a Pentax 645Z; files are 50MB raw. I upload from Adobe Bridge and manipulate the photo, sometimes turning them into files in excess of 250MB. I cannot resize as the large files are needed for enlargements. Have all sorts of problems trying to manipulate, add effects and saving most large files. I need some serious processing power. Can anyone suggest what Mac i should purchase? I thank you in advance for your help :-)

It sounds as if you're having some system-related problems now, unrelated to processing power as such. In particular, a buggy video driver can cause everything to slow to a crawl.
Medium format files are big, true, but not so big as to cause significant slowdowns on a normally functioning and reasonably current computer. A laptop will always be slower than a well-equipped desktop system, though. Mac vs PC plays no part in this, performance is unrelated to platform.
Bottlenecks are different in ACR and Photoshop, so that should give you a clue. ACR is computing-intensive and mostly limited by CPU speed. Photoshop, however, is mostly bandwidth-intensive and mainly limited by memory and disk throughput. It's also sensitive to GPU issues.

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

You will need to do that by syncing them with a computer and then syncing the computer with the iPad.

  • Turn Photoshop into Corel PHOTO-PAINT

At the request of a couple of Photoshop enthusiasts in these forums, they thought I should post this feature request.
In a previous discussion, harry teasley wrote:

In a previous discussion, Reynolds (Mark) wrote:

May I suggest a single suggestion, "Turn Photoshop into Corel Photo-Paint"?
In support of Harry Teasley and Mark Reynolds, I have created these lists of features included in both packages, that if not ignored might win over some Corel PHOTO-PAINT fans. Not that Adobe Photoshop is hurting for more customer base, but you get the idea. Oh! And none of these suggestions would remove any of Photoshop's existing functionality!
Here's a list of features that Corel PHOTO-PAINT has that Adobe Photoshop does NOT (as far as I know):
Mouse wheel zoom snaps to 100%.
Zoom tool actually zooms to selection bounds, even if it's greater than the document's bounds.
Cutting, copying, pasting and deleting selected layers.
    File >> New From Clipboard.
Renaming menu bar commands and moving/copying them around at will.
Mapping arrow keys to keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+up and CTRL+down are my favorite)
Interactive Object Transparency Tool (wineglass tool).
Swatches panel width @ 1 swatch wide.
    Ability to have larger swatches.
Click and hold on a swatch to see warmer, cooler, darker and lighter versions of that swatch.
Clicking a layer in the document to toggle between transform, rotate, warp and perspective.
If you select a layer, perform a single action on that layer, and undo that action, PP doesn't select the previous layer you had selected.
    Checkpoints.
    Reasonable price.
And here's a list that neither Photoshop or Corel PHOTO-PAINT has (as far as I know):
Creating new menu bar commands (wherever you want them) and assigning scripts to them.
Mouse wheel zoom does not maintain position when zooming way out and back in.
Brush strokes are not natural like Corel Painter and have a "skip rock" side-effect to them (yes, even with spacing set to 1 and smoothing checked).
Adding an alpha channel to the standard color picker.
Fully supported PNG alpha (even Photoshop creates artifacting that I've only seen present itself in Maya, but Pixelformer fixes the problem and saves the PNG appropriately). (more info)
Granted, there are a couple of features that Photoshop has, even from a Corel PHOTO-PAINT-biased standpoint, that I find extremely beneficial!
The first opened or newly-created document opens maximized (small thing, but very handy).
Vector shapes (though, still not truly vector).
Layer effects (and the drop shadows are flawless).
    The healing brush! Just awesome!
I'm sure there are a multitude of other features within Adobe Photoshop that I will grow to love, but these are the ones that stick out to me now, after having been forced to use Photoshop over the last couple years.
And I don't steal software either, so that's part of the reason I've grown up using Corel's products.

He was trying to argue that Photoshop had a more reasonable price with Elements.
I was only pointing out that Corel also has a cheaper alternative to PHOTO-PAINT. In fact, you can't even BUY PHOTO-PAINT solo. You have to buy the entire Graphics Suite.
This wasn't always the case, however.

  • Turning a series of still photos into an animation in CS5?

I have taken a number of photos of a sporting event using the sport/burst mode on my DSLR. I would like to turn some of the 5-10 shot series of photos into animation(s). I have CS5 but not AfterEffects, etc.
I'm really hoping there is a straight-forward method of doing this. All I use PS for is photo manipulation. Heresy, I know.
    Any advice?

I believe in CS5 the video animations was part of the extended version. The standard version did not support animations. It may have been able to do a few things with gif files, but I don't recall.

  • Can fcp turn a photo into a photo

A friend has a green screen for video work, I took the family by and took some pictures to make a christmas card out of and I got it all chromakeyed in fcp as I wanted. (no photo chromakey software)but I am stuck trying to figure out how to turn it into a jpeg. compressor gives photo options but it still remains with a .mov extension. I tried changing the extension to jpeg but iphoto still wont open it. I really dont want to buy a $100+ program to do this with .
    thanks kurt

This question was asked before (using FCP for print purposes) and the original poster concluded that the output, while suitable for video, was wholly unacceptable when printed. He went and purchased a copy of Photoshop Elements (if I remember correctly). It did two things for him - 1, it did a much better and more nuanced job with the green screen removal and 2. it allowed him to keep his original photo at the full pixel dimensions (which was much greater than what FCP would accept).
fwiw, Photoshop is a pretty invaluable program in my tool box.
    Good luck,

  • Can I organise photos into albums within iCloud Photo Library?

i Understand that edits / deletes etc in iCloud Photo Libary will be reflected on all my iOS devices but can I organise my photos into albums using iCloud photo library?
basically I want to take photos on my iPhone, review them on my iPad, delete the ones I don't want and keep the good ones in a relevant album (e.g. "Summer holiday 2014"). Then I want to be able to see identical albums on both my iPad and iPhone. From what I've seen so far, when I create an album and save a photo to it then that album is only local to that device?
    please help.

Are you saying it showed 800 photos before turning off iCloud photo library or that the 800 photos disappeared after you enabled iCloud photo library for the first time, the distinction is quite important.

  • I scanned some black and white negatives into my computer (iMac) where they were stored aas positives on the hard disc. When I import them to iPhoto they turn back into negatives. How do I change them into positives for printing?

I have scanned some black and white negatives into my computer(iMac) where they are stored on the hard disc as positives. When I import them into iPhoto to print they turn back into negatives. How do I turn them back into positives?

That's because you scanned them as B/W photos and iPhoto 08 doesn't support the grayscale color profile.  You can either rescan them as color photos or export them as originals out of iPhoto to a folder on the desktop and applhy this Automator application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB Profile, on them and then remimport into iPhoto. You can download it from  Toad's Cellar .  Be sure to read the warning on the website about not applying it on your only copies.

  • With new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did in the past with iPhoto.

With the new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did with iPhoto.  For instance, I have a photo collage app that in the past, I could just drag in the photos I wanted to include.  Now, I can DRAG the photos, but they do not DROP.  So, I have to go through the export process.  It is tedious.  What am I missing?  Where can I turn on the drag and drop feature for Photos?

YOu're not looking in the right palce. That's inside the iPhoto Application.
You need to look inside the iPhoto Library
    As I sid above:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there
