Turntable into Logic / make line level

i found my old turntable and records and want to record into logic. i don't have a phono pre amp. something small and not to expensive. also could my ensemble boost the signal of the turntable or do i still need a pre amp. lookin around the studio to see if i have anything else that could work. appreciate your suggestions

i fear that at least a small cheap preamp is better that anything you could do without it. 30-50 Bucks will do and save you a lot of headache. BTW: If you are planning to buy a small analog mixer: Some of them have a built in phono preamp. I got a Soundcraft Compact 4 to record my digipiano, mic and some other things, and even that's only about 100$ and has a good phono preamp.
I also plugged my Macbook directly into my HIFI amp's CDR out, which did the job fairly well. Not elegant, but effective.

    DJs! or anyone else that knows... i want to record a mix onto my laptop from vinyl turntables. ie about 60 mins worth. is logic stable enough to handle recording straight into it for this long? or can anyone recommend a free recording application to do this. doesn't matter how simple it is as i can edit it after - it just needs to not crash. most of the ones on the net seem to charge which seems crazy because i used to have a decent free one back on OS9!

    Hello, I'm currently in the process of shuffling things around in my studio and want to run one of my turntables into Logic. I've got a MOTU Traveller and was wondering if I should run the turntable into one of the 4 MIC/INST Inputs with the preamp or if I should run it into one of the 8 inputs on the back?     You should get a DI box that is made for hooking up turntables to your Motu.There are two very good reasons for this:
    1.The DI will have the RIAA equalization curve compensation.
    2.The DI will give you a proper level output.
    If you don't get a DI preamp...good luck,you vynil will sound pretty bad.

    I am looking to purchase a Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 18 guitar amp with the Redbox out. The manual says to plug the amp XLR output into a 'balanced, line level XLR input on the mixer.' I do not know what this means, but I do have an Apogee One which has an XLR in. Can I record a line level signal with the ONE XLR?

    Line level simply means a signal loud enough to be properly handled by an interface or by loudspeakers.  The amp XLR output will work fine with the ONE breakout cable which has the XLR input.

  • PS-LX300USB turntable microphone/line level

    I am attempting to record our old record collection to MP3 files for use on an iPod. The little instruction manual that came with the turntable says to set the microphone/line level at no more than 2, but the online instruction manual says to set it at 100. Quite a difference. Does anyone have any experience about which one is right?

    No takers. Hm. OK. After some more research on the Net it appears to be that all the Fast Tracks suffer from the same problem, which makes me believe that it's not a bug, but a feature of an unexplainable kind. Oh, well, back to my old iMic noisemaker (this one works, it's just screened very poorly, so it picks up all the possible interference, and also makes its own little nasty hiss--this is why I switched to the Fast Track a while ago--so I will need to cut it out with an EQ, again). Hopefully, the EQ surgery will not affect the synthesizer's sound consistency as severely as it use to do with a microphone.

    Hello friends,
    1) Can I summarize data from a line item ODS into a high summary level and store the results into another ODS?  If so, can you discuss the approach at a high level...i.e. whether or not a start up routine is needed?
    2) Once data is stored in an ODS, can a routine be written to update specific fields in the ODS after the data has already been loaded into the ODS.  As a simple example, is it possible to write a routine that simply multiplies "Field A" by "Field B" and stores the result in the ODS as "Field C"?  (Most of the time I would do this calculation in Bex, but in this one case, I have the need to calculate and store "Field C" in the ODS.)

    1.- Yes, you can sumarize data in other ODS. Connect both ODS and use aditions for key figures intead of overwriting.
    2.- You can do it in load time, in update rules, is not necesary to wait for ODS was loaded

  • Recording into logic from my MPC 1000 Redux

    I want to record a four bar drum beat, bass line..etc
    Also, I have some existing beats that i made on my MPC before I got Logic that I would like to transfer over to logic. Any thoughts on how to record into logic from my MPC? I can't seem to get any level even though I've got sync.

    well the easier way is maybe to transfer ur sample and program to logic via floppy(then u need a floppy drive).or via aksys(then u need the usb option slot on mpc.don't even know if it exist!?).or transfer what u wand digitaly via the coaxial output of the mpc to the optical in of ur mac(then u need a coax2optic converter,and i hope u own a g5 for the optical in)

  • Importing Synth Names into Logic and the "environment"

    Logic 7.2, OSX.4.something...
    I'm brand spanking new to Logic (migrating from Opcode's Vision...) and I have 3 questions:
    1) The Environment: I've read the user manual chapter on "The Environment" and I'm totally lost. Is there not a way that Logic can read what's attached to it via your MIDI interface/OSX MidiCore setup and create an environment based on this automatically? This would be a good starting point at least, but there's no mention in the manual of this function and it seems crazy that one would have to create each instrument, define each channel and so on down the line.
    2) Once my synthesizer and their channels are defined how do you get synthesizer patch names into logic such that when I pick an instrument from the track or arrange window, I can see a list of all patches available in any given bank for that instrument and pick my sound (ie: send the bank or program change message....) This is not explained anywhere that I could find and I'm curious if there's a way to import via sysex or a universal librarian. I'm an old school Opcode Vision user and I have patch names for all my gear and I can't imgine having to type all the names and even if I did, there's nothing that explains how to do this and assign patch change and bank change commands. Can sombody explain or point me to a resource that explains in laymans terms how to set up ones MIDI environment based on their MIDICore setup and get patch names to come through.
    3) Librarian: I can't find anything that talks about a way to manage patches and instruments within Logic and I need some method of being able to manage and get patches into Logic. Does Logic have a librarian or do I need a 3rd party program? If it doesn't have this, can somebody suggest a program that would meet this function and integrate with Logic such that I can import and manage patches?
    I hope this makes sense to somebody....

    Hi and welcome fellow former Vision user. I too came from Vision a couple years ago
    to answer
    1) Yes, the 1st time you open logic it looks at your audio midi setup (AMS) to make a basic environment from the info there. if there no hardware synths listed there they will not show up in Logic. Unfortunately Logic does not come with any synth device lists to add to your AMS so there is none to choose from. you will have to define them or you can use the MOTU list. you can download a copy here http://www.digicake.com/midnam/ download the MOTU.sit MOTU uses these midnam files for bank and patch change info. Unfortunately Logic does not use the bank and program information in them, it sure would make setting Logic up much easier
    2) To Get patch names into logic you can type them in one by one or use a word processor doc to import the names Pages 216 and 217 of the manual explain this
    3) Librarian? well sort of... Emagic had one called SoundDiver that I think is still in beta testing for OSX but I am not real familiar with it do a google search and see what you come up with
    I am hoping that someday Apple will use .middev and .midnam files to address outboard synths the same way DP does. That is why I use DP when I want to make standard midi files for outboard synths. DP is very similar to Vision in that way. but for everything else Logic rules

  • Getting phone signal into Logic via M-Audio

    To record phone calls on my land line, I got a Radio Shack Recording Control (43-228A), plugged it up, and set it to "Record." I plugged the 3.5mm plug into an adapter for 1/4 inch plug, which went into Input 1 on my M-Audio Fast Track Pro, from which point everything else is set as usual going into my Mac's FW. I made sure I had Input 1 selected, went to record as I spoke on a test call, and -- nothing but a hummmmmm. Just to be sure, I switched from line to mic input, and that didn't affect the hum.
    Does anyone know of what details I may have overlooked here to get the phone signal into Logic? FWIW, I also tried with the chintzy little $8 suction-cup on the handset, since it also has a 3.5mm plug. Not even any hum.
    I checked the usual suspects of "DUH" carelessness within Logic itself: making sure I matched the input to the M-Audio (tried both 1 and 2 anyhow), level up high, etc.
    Also, would anyone recommend other procedures for telephone recording? I'd rather stick with land lines instead of Skype or iChat, since not everyone I'll be calling to interview will have those. Suggestions?

  • Can't figure out how to get the patches off of keyboard into logic

    I have a pretty old school Yamaha Clavinova CVP-98, in which I have the midi in/out hooked up to my power mac g5 through an USB converter.
    I am able to use the yamaha keyboard as a midi to play the software instruments in logic which is awesome, but I am unable to play the patches that I want from the keyboard into logic.
    Any ideas would help, I would really appreciate it! Thank You!
    (its logic pro 7 by the way, so I am not sure if there is a difference within logic's environment or what not, if that is what I even need to deal with)

    Ok, MIDI is not audio, MIDI is data that "triggers" a synthesizer to produce audio output. Audio is simply what you hear when listening to a CD, DVD, anything out of a speaker, a singer, a band..etc, nature/the universe.
    (The "synthesizer" can be hardware like the Clavinova or software like Logic's built in synths, the advantage of software synths is that they do not need to be recorded as audio, their output is already audio within Logic)
    Ok, how do you record audio using the Mac. Personally I use an RME audio interface which is a PCI card in the Mac, I also have a 16 channel Presonus Firestudio that I use for portable/location recording. However... the G5 has an "OK" audio interface built in, it's not really professional quality but it will do. You will need to take the Line out of the Clavinova and go into the Mac's line in. You will need the proper audio cable. Not sure what the Clavinova line out is, probably a 1/4" jack, this is not the headphone jack but the jack used to normally plug into an amplifier.
    Then with the Clavinova volume set at 50% adjust the Mac's input recording level in System Preferences/Sound.
    Once recorded as a wave form, editing is limited (cut/paste...etc).
    Also, be aware that MIDI takes up virtually no memory or disk space... stereo audio at CD quality 16-bit/44.1kHz takes approx 10 megabytes of hard disk per minute. Audio is recorded as a file on a hard disk. Most of us use a dedicated hard disk for multitrack audio projects.
    I'm going to say this again...all of us that know this stuff put in our time reading the manuals... without reading the manual you are doing yourself, and us an injustice as no matter how much anyone explains to you..... you will only be able to use a few percent of Logic's capabilities.
    We all put our dues in, out of respect for this amazing software take some time and read the manuals.

  • Line level audio set to mic level by mistake, audio distorted, help!

    I mistakenly set my camera input to mic level instead of line level so the louder music from the concert is muddy.  I watched the waveform on my camera screen and didn't let it go into the red.  As I start to edit now I see that the waveform is fairly flat on the top of much of the audio and it doesn't sound great. None of it goes above 0db. Is there any techniques to make this sound better? I tried DeClippper but the scan does not show any problem because, I suppose it's under 0db.
    I shot a great video but the audio s**ks.

    Your problem here is that even though the recording level has been kept down, the preamp has overloaded, so what you have is a good recording of, er, distortion. Even if you made this recording clip, it wouldn't help you, as this distortion isn't clipping distortion at all, and has completely different characteristics. And I'm afraid that there's no such thing as undistortion software, regardless.
    I think that you may well have to write this one off to experience, I'm afraid.

  • Rewiring Max/MSP into Logic Pro 7

    Ok. My anticipated workflow at the moment is to generate "sketches" in Reason using the Combinator structure and some "seemingly" advanced re-routing / modulation ideas. From there, I like to go to Max and rebuild on these ideas, making the timing engine more mature, while triggering simple FM sounds in MSP, until I get a basic idea of what I want the sound, rhythm, etc. to be like...
    Now here's the next (and unacheived part) I want to take this "engine" and rewire it into Logic so I can have the same timing, but control better sounding instruments / kits. Has anyone had any success with rewiring Max into Logic and controlling say, Ultrabeat, Battery, or other larger AU synths. If so, how is it done?
    With this Max "engine" I'm looking to blur the lines between process and composition, but want to def. make more beat oriented / organic / generative tracks ala Autechre (and their infamous max-patch but with better sounds), Syndrone, or say someone like Aoki Takamasa and what he did in "Silicom Two"

    I sent this message to the Max list first.
    Do you wish to send MIDI notes from Max=>Logic or audio signals?
    One way to get MIDI notes from Max to Logic, is to do the following:
    1) from [noteout] select "from Max/MSP 1" by double clicking the [noteout] object
    2) in Logic's Environment, select "Click and Ports" (on the top left hand side)
    3) in your Physical Input object disconnect the "Sum" output
    4) on the output labeled "from Max/MSP 1", cable to the Audio instrument of your choice. Likely this object will not be visible from the "Click and Ports" layer of the Environment so OPTION+CLICK the Physical Input spot labeled "from Max/MSP 1" A drop down menu will appear in which you select your Audio Instrument. (this looks like the menu seen when assigning tracks to instruments in the Arrange) See Logic 7 Reference p. 208 for more on this.
    5) Start sending MIDI notes from Max and they should be received in Logic
    I can send you a Logic file that shows the Physical Input stretched out so you can see the MIDI input devices. Email me if you want to see the file. Hope this is helpful in some way.

  • Relational access to XML Content: can not display line level details

    there is one record at the header level and two records at the line level in the xml data file. I created the following view and when i see the results, I see two records as expected but the value for the line level coloumns is null but there are some values for the containerid in the xml data file

  • How to SIMPLY use the %DIMENSION_TO_SET% variables into logic scripts

    hello,
    I'm using a prompt of type "COPYMOVE" or "COPYMOVEINPUT". In this type of prompt, there are 2 columns of dimension members list, one for defining the "source zone" and one for defining the "target zone" of logics.
    The left colum of the prompt (for source zone) feeds the variables %DIMENSION_SET% : %ACCOUNT_SET%, %ENTITY_SET%, %CATEGORY_SET%, etc...and these variables can be used in the logic scripts in *XDIM_MEMBERSET instructions for example.
    The right colum of the prompt feeds the variables %DIMENSION_TO_SET% : %ACCOUNT_TO_SET%, %ENTITY_TO_SET%, %CATEGORY_TO_SET%, etc...and I don't know how to SIMPLY use these variables in the logic scripts.
    I've found a tricky way to do that but I meet 2 problems :
    - it is complicated
    - the multi-info instruction (BEGININFO/ENDINFO) seems to be bugged as blank lines are added all the time in the code and sometimes I have to wait for minutes when I try to modifiy the package code through BPC for excel eData/modify package menu.
    So the question is how to SIMPLY get the %DIMENSION_TO_SET% variables into logic scripts and use them ? Thanks, R.

    finally I've discovered that there is no need of BEGININFO instruction.
    One can pass several functions to a logic with one FORMULASCRIPT task. The functions definitions have to be separated by instructions. See below :
