Tutorial for solving some media manager problems

Hey gang,
Hopefully me posting this isn't bad forum etiquette, but I recently published a tutorial that details some fixes and "best practices" for properly importing media and getting rid of some pesky media manager errors:
http://library.creativecow.net/lyon_matt/fixing-fcp-assets/1
Full disclosure: I get something like a $0.01 per page view, but I'm not expecting to get rich. I just wanted to spread the word because I know lots of people experience Media Manager problems.
Feedback is definitely welcome!

I think it's just a great article and is of more value than 1 cent I just offered by reading the article...

  • Media Manager Problem

Here is my problem, I have installed BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.2, 4.3, and 4.5, (not at the same time, of course) and have been attempting to open up Media Manager on each version. On every single version it has given me the same exact error. When I click on the Media Manager icon in the Desktop Manager, a window pops up entitled "Format Loader: LoadImage" with the message
    "Image file "file::C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\Common Resources\Shared\Generic\Images\About_RIM_Background.png" cannot be loaded".
After I click OK on that, another very similar window pops up saying
"Image file "file::C:\Program Files\Roxio\Media Manager 9\Resources\Default\Generic\Images\AboutMM.png" cannot be loaded".
After clicking OK there, the "MediaManager9 Module has encountered a problem and needs to close." window pops up, asking me to send the error report. I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP 3 if I remember correctly. My phone is the Blackberry Curve 8310 with AT&T
    Things I have already done
    -Reinstalled
    -Repaired Installation
    -Redownloaded
    -Downloaded different version
    -Tore my hair out
Anyway, please help. Thanks, much appreciated.

    Hi Moskvich!
Just to let you know first of all there is a know issue with XP and Roxio working together, as per the Tech
that I just talked to last night.
First of all, when you install, uninstall, install, uninstall, etc.... any program, you can run into a problem.
I would not try this at home unless you are really familiar with this step, because it WILL mess up your computer
if you do it wrong.  Unless you know someone who has knowledge on it.  Good Knowledge!!
:  Because the program was installed several times you should, or have someone else, go into the registry and delete
all the files, AND O N LY the files that are associated with the Media Manager.  Again, if you delete the wrong files it will
prevent that program from functioning properly.
Then restart the computer and reinstall one, and only one program.
Just an FYI:  I also am having some problem with it freezing up and getting errors.  But what I have found out is that
it works better if I shut down the Media manager first before I unhook the phone from the computer, or shut down the
    Desktop Manager.
Also, be careful on what you are doing and not trying to do different things while using the M. Manger.  It seems to
be very sensitive with other programs running.
Remember, this is not a fix.  But may help.  Every computer is different.  There might just be a compatibility issue
with what you are running on your computer.
    Hope it helps.
By the way, don't pull your hair out, you'll need it at a later date!!!!!!!!

  • BB Desktop / Roxio Media Manager Problems

Seriously, how does anyone use this software?  I'm using the latest 4.7 version.  Connecting my Storm up to my PC (Windows Vista), the overall response time is so slow that it is almost painful to watch.  Issues -
    1. Checks for applications updates everytime I click on a function? Really? This just happened when I launched the application - why does it do it everytime I click on Add application, manage media, etc?
    2. Roxio Media Manager - this is about the most painful piece of software I've ever used.  Did anyone really QA this before shipping it?  Slow, slow, and slow.  No indication that it is doing anything after you click on an action. Half the time it doesn't do anything!  Moving media files, pictures, etc should take this long.  Even navigating the local file system shouldn't take 30 - 60 seconds to do.
BB - any updates coming?  It feels like this was rushed out before it was fully developed....

    Research shows:
    1.  (thanks to my friend John Clark for this instructional) To prevent this from happening this you need to install Desktop Manager WITHOUT this Automatic Update service. Below are the steps to remove this service.
    1. Go to Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs.
    2. Click on "BlackBerry Desktop Software" and select "Change/Remove."
    3. When prompted, hit "Next" and then you should get options for Modify, Repair, or Remove. Choose "Modify."
    4. On DM 4.7 and higher, in the list of installed items, you should see "BlackBerry Automatic Update." Click the icon next to it and change it to "This feature will not be available." That should put an "X" next to "BlackBerry Automatic Update." If you are using DM 4.6 or lower and don't see this option in this list then just continue with the install and the installation will ask you a few screens later. A screen will be shown where you will be asked to check the boxes for:
    A) "Start BlackBerry Desktop Manager automatically each time the computer starts."
    B) "Create a shortcut for BlackBerry Desktop Manager on the Windows Desktop."
    C) "Check for software updates."
Be sure number 3, "Check for software updates," is NOT checked.
    2. Yes the Roxio software is buggy to me as well. I don't install it and life stays good. Use Mass Storage Mode enabled on your Media Card (Options > Media Card) and then you can drag/drop files from your PC to the Media Card as it will appear simply as a removable drive.

  • Media Manager Problems in FCP--Need Help Quick!

I'm trying to package my short film to send to a color corrector. He wants it packed by "Media Manager," but whenever I try it, it keeps saying "Error, the specified file is locked." Help?

He probably just wants the sequence media managed, creating a new fcp project with just this sequence included.  Media manager usually requires all sources to have reel names assigned to them.  If you brought any material in digitally (graphic files, quicktimes, etc), you will need to add reel names for these files in the browser.  Once that's done, make sure the sequence is selected in the browser and go to file:  Media Manager.  Choose Copy Delete unused media from duplicated items and Duplicate selected items and place into a new project.  Questions?  You could post back or perhaps read the appropriate sections of the manual - or talk to your colorist.

  • [solved] Some programs cause problems for sound in other programs.

Today I noticed that audio has stopped working in some applications, but not others. The programs that I know where it doesn't work are:
    Hotline Miami (game)
    VLC
    Dungeons of Dredmor (game)
    Uplink (game)
Programs where I know it works are:
mplayer / smplayer (on the same files where vlc does not work)
    mpd
    Programs run through wine
Standalone flash player and the firefox flash plugin
Additionally, when I run a program where audio doesn't work, I have to restart programs where it does. For example, I'll pause mpd, open Hotline Miami, and then quit. When I try to unpause mpd, I'll get the error message "Failed to open audio output". But if I try a couple times, it will eventually resume. It's a similar situation for mplayer. I'll have to quit and restart mplayer a couple times after trying one of the other programs before audio will work.
Further complicating the matter is that there are no error messages for the programs where audio does not work. I can't seem to track down the problem. I also don't do much with sound beyond using mpd and mplayer, so I don't know when this started.
My hardware is a Lenovo IdeaPad z580 with integrated Intel HDA audio.
EDIT: I just noticed that the problem is not what I thought. Part of the problem was simply due to volume. So I can get sound in the listed programs. However, running those programs does still cause the problem for the mplayer and mpd where I have to restart them.

Gah. It does appear to have been a pulseaudio thing. I hadn't even realized it was installed, let alone running. I've fixed it. Thanks for the help! And thanks, brebs, for the asoundrc file. I think it'll help a lot.

  • [SOLVED] Odd window manager problem...

I have installed Arch and a full Gnome DE. However when I start gnome, I get an odd window manager. I tried metacity and metacity --replace in a terminal, but I just get "Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager"
Here is what it looks like:
Any way I can get some metacity going?
    Edit: [SOLVED]
I just put metacity as startup application and restarted. Still not sure what that window manager was, but I'll be okay I guess...

haha you had gnome running with twm as the window manager instead of metacity.
You need to put 'exec gnome-session' in your .xinitrc file.
twm huh? Well that's a new one for me!
I tried to do that but the .xinitrc file didn't exist yet and I wasn't sure if I should make it...I think I tried ~/.xinitrc . Would it be in another directory?

  • Ideas for solving a unique Exchange problem

    Hey all,
I have a customer with a Root/Child domain type environment. All windows AD users exist in the child domain. The exchange 2007 mailbox database exists in the root domain.
I have the OIM AD connector connecting to the child domain with an account in the enterprise admin group and in the exchange organization admins group.
I have tested and verified the OIM service account can provision exchange mailboxes via the powershell command from the child domain.
The problem lies within the Oracle Ad/Exchange connector. It's trying to pull user data from the child domain while also pulling exchange mailbox database info from the root domain. Oracle claims that multi-domain functionality isn't supported and will be available in a future release in 2010.
So that isn't going to work for the customer.... and I'm looking for some ideas.
I have seen the script that is run by OIM to create the mailboxes, the script is passed three values (userid, mailbox database and a log file). Since the mailbox database is going to be static, I don't necessarily need OIM to allow selection of multiple databases and therefore don't need OIM to browse exchange on the root domain. Is there anyway I can bypass this and statically set this database value that is passed to the mailbox creation script?
I'm sure someone else has seen an environment like this before and I am open to some other ideas.
Does Oracle support a scripting function perhaps that i can pass values to to trigger the powershell mailbox creation command outside of the AD connector? At this point, I'll take whatever ideas i can get outside of modifying the customers environment to a single domain. That's not an option.
    Thanks in advance.

The 1st step i would take is seeing what values are being mapped to the different steps. If you could map a diffrent root context at one of the steps in the adapter factory or different connection info.

  • Tips for solving red reddish color problem in Flex2-14

My flex2-14 screen color was very reddish, so I was trying to calibrate the color using the calibration tool in control panel. However, it is not satisfied.
I have solved the problem using Intel HD display tool in Control panel.
Open the Inten HD display tool, then increase blue contrast as 52, increase blue gamma as 51, increase color saturation as 8..
    Then, it would be better..

    I am not sure this..
Instead of if pls give while and check:
    try{
    while(rsValue.next()) {
    g.setFont(fntHeading);
    g.setColor(Color.red);
    g.drawString("Main Report",200,100);

  • Media Manager . . . can't find . . .

    My file management's a mess . . . I fully admit it. (OK - ok - next time I'll try harder - I PROMISE).
But the 80 min project plays fine in FCP and I've burned to DVD etc - all's good.
Now I want to use MM to boil the whole thing down into one Folder and ditch the unused stuff.
Trouble is, every time MM gets started on the work, it keeps coming up with files it can't find.
Sometimes, it's files that are in my main media folder (where most of the other stuff it found with no problem, is too) - and often when I show it the file, it just keeps telling me it can't find it - ad nauseum!
Sometimes, what it can't find looks like a bunch of numbers that mean nothing to me - even Spotlight can't find them. (I do have all both external drives running),
    This is really tiresome.
    Any ideas?

    Very strange, isn't it!
A similar thing happened in FCP with this project.
After I'd done some media management of my own (last year sometime) one of the music tracks started coming up as offline every time I started FCP.
I just reconnected by locating the relevant file (which was still in the same folder with the rest of the music tracks) but it kept happeneing.
Eventually, I deleted the music track and relevant clip, saved the project, emptied the trash, re-imported the clip I'd dragged back from my external backup and guess what ?. . . The problem still persisted for some weeks!
Eventually it righted itself - not sure why!

  • Media Manager: What features do work?  What doesn't?

    Hi,
For those people for whom the media manager works, what works? What doesn't? What version of FCP and MacOS are you using?
I've just spent the last several hours trying to reconnect clips by hand after FCP 5.0.4 crashed while using the Media Manager to consolidate Media Files into one folder (from the manual volume 4 pg 104-105) for archiving. I am beginning to despair. Luckily I've done this after writing out what should be the final version of my project to DVD, so if I can't succeed, as long as I don't need to edit anything I should be ok.
I can tell you what's not working for me: the workflow of capture-now an entire miniDV tape to disk. I've tried many different approaches, and everything seems broken. I am using Mac OS X 10.3.9 and FCP 5.0.4.
Specifically the aspects of Media Manager which are broken for me:
    1) (page 103) Removing Portions of Media Files after creating subclips. "A common logging and capturing workflow involves capturing each tape to a single media file, breaking the master clip into subclips, and then using the Media Manager to create individual media files for each subclip."
That is just plain broken. Even when I delete the master file as recommended, it does not break up the media file into individual files for the subclips. I've seen that problem referenced here before. Creating subclips from the subclips and removing subclip limits gives me the entire 1 hr tape again, when all I want is the smaller portion which does not cross DV start/stop boundaries.
Talking with a creative helper at the Palo Alto Apple store I learned that if you don't delete any media between clips, it doesn't make a file break. I have not tested that, instead I used the alternate workflow he proposed of selecting my subclips (created from the markers made with DV start/stop detect) ctrl-click -> batch export, item settings: make movie self contained. Unfortunately, I discovered the hard way that that workflow introduces errors in the time code, making recapturing the project to reconstruct it impossible.
    2) Consolidating Media Files into one folder (pg 104-105) - This is also broken and caused FCP to quit unexpectedly. Both the source and destination disk had enough disk space to hold two or more copies of the entire project. What's worse, although I've been able to reconnect most of the clips created using the batch export process menioned above, some of them complain that they need the complete 1-hr clip to play properly. Those clips were deleted weeks ago, and I was able to edit and work on the project successfully without them. Why are they needed now? The small clips do appear on disk, I can see them but they won't play without the long file.
Nothing I've tried with the media manager has worked. Has anything worked for you? I'm especially interested if you use the "capture now" feature to capture 1-hr tapes and log later.
    Thanks,
    --Beth

I use MM all the time, but only for certain things. I can share some observations:
If you are using MM to "Create Offline - Remove Unused", the original media all needs to be present in order for the unused media to be removed from the offline clips MM creates. This is they way I use MM all the time - capturing long clips at RT or DV quality, and then removing unused media with MM, recapturing at high quality.
I might try to use MM to copy media used in a certain sequence, but I would never try to move the media in a way that would automatically remove or alter any of my already captured media. If FCP crashed in the middle of the operation (perhaps it hits a file with incorrect permissions) your media will be half-moved, and some of the media might get corrupted. I have reassembled a few projects like this for friends and it was not easy.
Speed adjusted clips - I still see TC issues every now and then when using MM on speed-adjusted clips - here is my workaround: I go through my edited sequence and pick out as many of the speed-adjusted clips as I can find, copying and pasting them into a new sequence, where I remove the speed adjustments. I include this new sequence in my selection when I initiate MM, this creates new master clips for the speed-adjusted material that are guaranteed to come up with the correct in and out points. If during my re-assembly I find that and of these clips have a problem, I know there will be enough media in the master clip to replace the speed-adjusted media without having to log and capture a new clip.
One major bug in MM I have found with FCP5 is that when using MM to convert a DV sequence to an Uncompressed offline sequence, any graphics or animation movie files (animation codec) can no longer be rendered at full quality without replacing them one by one. My last project had 70 of these files in a 1-hour program.

  • RMAN not retrying on media manager errors

    Hi,
I'm using Oracle 10g, RMAN and TDPO (the TSM client for Oracle). I'm
trying to do a PITR to a non-production machine, but RMAN is intolerant
of any media manager problems that crop up, so things like this
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
    ANS1017E (RC-50) Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure
    and this
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
ANS1314E (RC14) File data currently unavailable on server
result in an immediate 'failover to previous backup'. The first error
was caused by a transient network problem; I suspect the second was just
bad luck as the file was being reclaimed by the TSM server when TDPO
    asked for it.
Both these errors would have gone away if RMAN had tried again, so is
there any way I can tell it to retry on error? If not, is there
something else I could do to improve the situation?
    Thanks
    Sandeep

  • Vcast Media Manager program is faulty

Downloaded Vcast. Installs correctly. When attempt to launch I receive a "verizon.exe has stopped working and will be closed" message. Problem is apparently with the Data Execution Protection (DEP) settings. Even when try to exempt the program from DEP, get a message that the program cannot run without DEP. This is a problem with the software, not with the operating systems.
    Vista Home Premium 32-bit
    Droid X

If you have a Droid phone, you are not required to transfer media over to the phone using Vcast Media Manager.  You can simply plug in your phone, put the phone into USB Mass Storage mode in the notification panel after you plug it in, and it will work just like any USB thumb drive or other mass storage device.  This is how I personally transfer over Videos, Pictures, and Music to my Droid 2, Droid X, Thunderbolt, and Fascinate.  This works pretty much flawlessly as long as the content is not protected.
For those of you having issues installing the Vcast Media Manager software on the computer, if it was a software issue, everyone would have it.  There are so many variables when it comes to PCs that it becomes impossible for a cellular phone company to help with software installation on a PC.  We are not certified computer techs here at Verizon, which is why we keep computer troubleshooting light.  There are some basic requirements for the Vcast Media Manager to work though, please ensure your PC meets all of these requirements before diving too deep into troubleshooting Vcast Media Manager installation issues.

I hope this answers some of your concerns with the Media Manager software.

  • Lightroom (ACR 4) color management problems

Lightroom (or ACR 4) has some color management problems. When I develop a DNG into Photoshop (sRGB) everything looks great. Then I proof colors for the web (monitor RGB) the reds become oversaturated. I don't see this problem when I develop the same DNG using Bridge (ACR 3).
Any picture that I develop using LR that looks great in Photoshop, becomes way too red when published on the web.
    Whats going on here?

I have confirmed this finding using Photoshop CS3 beta - same problem in converting to the web - too red!
