Tutorial on converting raster drawings to vector

I have a friend who does drawings on paper that he wants to get scalable.  The high-level path appears to be scan the image and run autotrace in AI.
As I look at online articles, some suggest taking the raster into PS to erase the pencil marks and ink the image.  My friend does the inking on the paper before the scan.
I have some experimenting to do with autotrace settings, but I can see right away that some of the lines on the image vary in width in both PS and AI.  And, no matter how good his inking is, there is still quite a bit of "noise" along the lines.  His inking also leaves quite a bit of variation in line width.  What he wants is a constant width.
My question is: if you want a line to be of constant width and you have a scanned image to work with, which tool (PS, AI) and what technique is best to create the result.
One thought is, rather than try to clean up the line in either tool, the better approach might be to draw a new line using the scanned image as a guide.  My concern is that the line won't be smooth if done by hand.  Are their tools in either PS or AI that would help?
Thanks, and sorry this is a bit vague.  I'm just starting to understand the issue.

  • Convert raster effect to vector

    Is there a simple and easy way to convert a piece of art with a raster effect to vector? I have a rectangle with a gradient with the Graphic pen effect applied, but my client needs it all in vector to produce the piece (a belt buckle). The only thing I've come up with is to expand the appearance and then Live Trace it. Haven't been totally satisfied with the results, still playing with the trace options, but I wanted to see if anybody else had a better and more accurate way of going about it.

    The belt buckle will probably be made from a mold or die. Any artwork can be used for a mold or die as long as the resolution is high enough. If the buckle will be made using a computer controlled router, then you'll need vector artwork to provide paths that direct the router.
    Auototrace using Live paint. Play with the settings. And don't be surprised if the router operator balks at too many small paths or too rough an outline.

  • Can't convert raster image to vector and save with a transparent ground.

    I'm pretty sure I know all the right steps as far as Live Trace and Expand go, but it seems I can't detach the image from the white workspace background. I tried selecting the white in my image and deleting it, but Illustrator isn't even allowing me to select. I feel like something very simple and fundamental is wrong, I just can't figure out what it is.

    Thanks, didn't see that option before. Tried it, but I still have the problem of the file including all of the workspace and being much larger than the original file. There has to be some trick to detaching the black from the background we're missing.

  • Can Acrobat convert a scanned in raster pdf to vector pdf?

    I scanned a paper electrical schematic into Adobe Acrobat X. I believe this copy is a raster copy. I'd like to know if Acrobat can convert the raster to a vector pdf?

    I think that, to get a good result, you would/could put the raster image in one layer in Illustrator, re (vector) draw it and then delete the raster layer.

  • Help converting raster product image to vector

    I have an image of one of our products that I need to convert to a vector image for the use in a video.  I'm not too skilled in IA and everytime I try to use Live Trace (w/ various settings) the results are not ideal.  I've included a jpeg of the product.  I have a hi-res raw file to work with.  Can anyone provide me with advice on the best way to go about converting the image to vector?  Thank you in advance!

    Sounds like a poorly defined project then. You need to nail down the client's requirements and expectations.
    If the requirements are simply for a scaleable 2D drawing, then a number of rendering methods will work. But if the animation envisioned calls for the cylindrical object to rotate (about any axis other than the line of sight), then doing that kind of frame-by-frame artwork in Illustrator will be inefficiently tedious.
    Illustrator's 3D Effect can extrude the semicircle or split circle section. And creating a Blend between two copies of a 3D Effect object with different orientations can achieve the series of frame-by-frame images. But it cannot do the notch as one extruded object. Nor can it extrude two separate paths in the same 3D coordinate system at different positions along the extrusion axis. Nor can it revolve two paths at different degrees in the same 3D space. Plus, its rendering of reflective metalic surfaces is not as versatile as would be required, so you'd have to resort to artwork maping, which would not likely be very convincing on a rotating object.
    So if the tube-like object is to spin, Illustrator is a poor choice of a program to use for it.

    If you do want to use the image trace option here is how you do it:
    If you have nothing selected your contextual menu should look something like this:
    If you have your image selected your contextual menu will look like this.
    You can use the image trace from that button. to find it through the menu go here:

  • Converting 3D fx into vectors

    So I've got objects with 3D "bevel and extrude" appplied to them.
    Is there a way I can convert them into vectors? Cause now they dont actually act like they're vectors...
    I tried to convert them into bitmap and then convert that into vector but that didnt worked out the way I desired.
    Is there a solution to this?
    Thanks alot

    >...it basically means i need to
    redraw the thing...
    Well... one
    could argue that, since you relied on an effect the first time around, you will now be truly drawing (rather than
    redrawing) it.
    I know I could get slapped silly around here for suggesting such a thing, but this could be a wonderful learning experience for you.

  • How to convert raster images like( PNG, JPG,GIF, BMP, TIFF etc) into SVG

    Hi Friends!
    With a hope that any Java Guru from SUN Forum can help me to solve my query, I'm posting my thread here.
    I have a project with feature to add image. My requirement is to convert any selected image file like (PNG,JPG,BMP,Tiff) into SVG Formate before adding it to Frame.
    I found one software from the link :
    http://delineate.sourceforge.net/
    Which covert raster to SVG.
    But I don't how can i use it runtime ?
    I want to convert during runtime process. like when user select option for to add Image then it call a procedure to add Image by converting any raster to svg & finally add to Frame.
    Your any help/suggestions wold be appreciated
    Regards
    Kirti

    There are basically two approaches:
    1. Embed the raster image in the SVG
    2. Vectorize the image
    1. Use Batik, or just write the XML yourself. Create some SVG files with embedded images, the syntax isn't to difficult. You could do it with a PrintWriter.
    2. Good luck to you. Writing a good vectorizer is
    - difficult
    - often pointless
    - though a great challenge if you're in to it
    The appllication you mention actually is only a front-end. it doesn't execute the vectorization itself. It uses Potrace and autotrace, which are native applications.

  • How to convert raster tiles into buffered images?

    Abstract:
    Using the code below i try to render four tiles of an image and then store them in different files. Problem: Only the tile 0,0 gets rendered correctly.
              SunTileScheduler sts = new SunTileScheduler(4,0,0,0);
              sts.scheduleTiles(img, new Point[]{
                        new Point(0,0)
                        , new Point(0,1)
                        , new Point(1,0)
                        , new Point(1,1)
              }, new TileComputationListener[]{
                        new TileComputationListener() {
                   public void tileComputed(Object obj, TileRequest[] atilerequest, PlanarImage planarimage, int i, int j, Raster raster)
                   Hello
    I am using JAI to create a RenderedOp object named img and then call the TileScheduler to render me four tiles. Appearantly the scheduler tiles in 512x512, so the Point Array should render the pixels from 0,0 to 1024, 1024 spread accross four tiles.
    Unfortunatly only the tile 0,0 (-> pixels 0,0,511,511) gets rendered correctly, the other three are black and take 4725 bytes each in the file system. Tile 0,0 takes ~95k
    The TileComputationListener returns a Raster object that i convert into a BufferedImage:
                        BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(raster.getWidth(),raster.getHeight(), BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
                        image.setData(raster);After that i write the image into the file system
                        String fileName = String.format("d:/temp/tile/tiles_%s_%s.jpg", i,j);
                        try
                             FileOutputStream stream = new FileOutputStream(fileName);
                             JPEGImageEncoder encoder = JPEGCodec.createJPEGEncoder(stream);
                             JPEGEncodeParam encodeParam = encoder.getDefaultJPEGEncodeParam(image);
                             encodeParam.setQuality(1.0, true);
                             encoder.setJPEGEncodeParam(encodeParam);
                             encoder.encode(image);
                             stream.flush();
                             stream.close();Tiles seem to be problematic because this constructor
    public BufferedImage (ColorModel cm,
                              WritableRaster raster,
                              boolean isRasterPremultiplied,
                              Hashtable<?,?> properties) {rejects Rasters whose tile index is != 0,0. So it all boils down to this:
    How do i convert a Raster objects into a BufferedImage?
    Regards
    Mark

                                  WritableRaster wr = (WritableRaster) raster;
                                  WritableRaster newRaster = wr.createWritableTranslatedChild(0,0);
                                  BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(planarimage.getColorModel(),
                                            newRaster,false,new Hashtable());

    If you have a sharp, high resolution image you may be able to
    trace it with
    FreeHand's trace tool. Give it a try, experimenting with
    settings.
    If you don't have a high resolution image, then you will have
    to manually
    trace it. Put the image on its own layer, lock the layer, and
    draw with FH
    drawing tools.

  • Step by step tutorial of converting DVD/Video to iPod

    If you need to convert to DVD or other video format files to iPod, you maybe interested in this step by step tutorial. http://www.nunufashion.com/software/SW_Tutorial.aspx?swid=9
    PS: The above solution is suitable for PC users. so if you use Mac, then Handbrake is a good choice for you~~
    Thanks
      Windows XP

    Hi Rick,
    I am extracting the material from the dvd directly using handbrake. The file that handbrake creates lands on the desktop. I then ammend the end of the filename from mp4 to m4v. Following this I click and drag the file onto the itunes icon in the dock. I can then download it to the ipod no problem. The dropouts occur no matter where I play the file. In other words, on the desktop (with QT), in the itunes library and on the pod.
    I went back and looked at all the dvd's that are giving me this trouble. The culprit seems to be that the audio signal is in LPCM (linear pulse code modulation). Just for the **** of it, I tried to rip one track using handbrake changing the sampling rate of the audio to 48,000 Hz which I believe is what LPCM uses (previously I had set it at 41,000 Hz in handbrake). But no go, still has dropouts. One of these problem dvd's has a second audio option in AC3 (2ch). As a test, I ripped one song using that. Dropouts are gone. However, the audio is a director's commentary (on the music video he shot) with the music in the background, so it's not what I want.
    Is there any way to convert LPCM to AC3? Or any other way to fix this dropout problem.
    Thanks,
    Pete

  • Raster texture on vector image?

    I've drawn some images in Illustrator CS4, on which I want to put an overlayed raster texture on. But how do I do that?
    Attempt 1::  If I just overlay it, I somehow need to clip the texture to match the outline of the image.
    Attempt 2::  I've tried a opacity mask, but it makes my image semi-transparent.

    Use the path as a clipping mask. Check the help files for instructions. Come back if you need further help.
