Tutorial on Creating Chapter Marks is Incorrect

I just discovered that by following the tutorial for adding chapter marks to a movie you end up with chapter marks that are duplicated in the chapter popup menu of the QT movie window.
Instead of "Add to Selection and Scale" as indicated in the tutorial, you need to select "Add to Movie". Once I did this, the chapter marks behaved correctly and did not duplicate. You just need to be sure that the length of your text track is the same length as the video and audio tracks.
Hope this helps someone from tearing their hair out. Luckily I discovered this before tearing all of mine out.

Not so fast.
There's another problem, to do with the duration of the chapter track movie before it is copied and pasted into the main movie.
The tutorial tells us that when we export the timecode text file to work on, we should set fractions of seconds to 1/30th. I understand that this is because this is the way the Inspector shows time. Which, indeed, seems to be the case. (I just want to make it clear that I did this.)
Next step: in my text file I fill in my timecodes for the chapters, including the last timecode, which matches the movie's duration. I save the text file, open it in Quicktime and... whaa? The duration is fractionally longer. I select all and paste into my main movie and "Add to movie" and, yes, the chapter track pushes out the end of the movie. Well, no worries, I can trim the end of the movie.
But this is not enough! I also find that some of the chapters begin at the wrong points. Really odd. It seems to be chapter points early in the movie rather than later, which is counterintuitive since one would think that a timecode error would aggregate over the length of the movie.
The only way I've found to overcome this issue is to launch QuickTime Player 6 and use this instead. It opens text files with chapter information and creates chapter "movies" of the right length. When pasted into the main movie, chapter markers fall in exactly the right place.
I think I'd better make a bug report. Anyone else come across this?

  • How can I create chapter marks in order to export to a DVD later?

With the new version of IMovie for Mac, I am not able to find where this function is.

Since Apple has ended support for DVD burning they felt no need for chapter markers in iMovie version 10.
iMovie version 9 is still in your Applications folder and it can create chapter markers.

  • I want to create a "Play All" chapter marker that will play the video from start to finish in addition to the standard chapters I have-I guess I can auto start the DVD but would prefer a button-how and where would I put this "play all" marker??

I want to create a "Play All" chapter marker that will play the video from start to finish in addition to the standard chapters I have…I guess I can auto start the DVD but would prefer a button…how and where would I put this "play all" marker?? Thanks..

The start chapter button is a play the whole movie button regardless of how many other markers you have.
Once a DVD starts playing it continues to the end.
Chapters marker simply gives the viewer a place to start playback whether it be the start, middle or near the end.

  • Is there a way to directly connect/group a chapter marker to the first frame of a clip?

I have over 6 hours of SD clips on my timeline.   I ended up having to add more clips throughout the timeline.   I was able to "group" the titles to their respecttive clips so I don't have to deal with moving them when I move their clip.   Now I am curious to know if there is a way to link the Chapter Markers to the first frame of their respective clips so that when I move the clip, so the Chapter Marker moves with it?
BTW, I know it is best to put the Chapter Markers in last b4 I go on to Encore.   While I was working in Encore I realized it would be more meaningfull to create and add several After Effects "AVI" files between several of my clips.   This work in progress would be a lot easier if I did not have to keep re-adjusting the Chapter Markers everytime I modified the timeline.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your suggestion about using the clip markers.   I tried them on a test clip.   They did not come down to the timeline.  Besides, I would want them labeled.   Right now all my clips have a marker that is labeled with the date and location.   The chapter markers are labeled the same way.   I have a spread sheet that list the dates of all the Chapter Markers which connect to the dates on the menu.     This seems like an old fashion way to do things for such a sophisticated software.   Maybe I should put in a feature suggestion to Adobe.   I would do that, but I am afraid that I may embarrass myself as being the only one that ever asked for something like that.   Or they would accuse me of misusing their software.
    Again, thanks for your suggestion.

  • Chapter Marker Image Problems

    Hi,
I created a movie and set chapter marker. For images I moved the image slider to different locations than default. After rendering the movie chapters work fine but the images are wrong. The same image sometimes appears a two adjacent chapters and other times the image for the next chapter appears at the one before. I didn't have that problem before so I don't know if it is me doing something wrong or if the bug came with the recent 10.0.9 update.
    Anyone noticed the same?

Problem is solved. FCPX inserts a chapter marker at movie start which caused the problem. I set that marker manually and changed the chapter image to the position I wanted it to be. Now all images correspond to the appropriate chapter markers.

  • Chapter marker and video ipod

    My problem is the following:
I have made a mv4 movie using Imovie with chapter marker. I must admit that it is working perfectly on iTunes I can use the chapter marker on the top of the screen. But, I can't use the chapter marker on my Ipod.
It seems that my movie is not in the podcast folder but in the movie folder. Does it make any differences? And if yes how can I transfer my exported-for-ipod movie from the movie folder to the podcast folder (in the ipod).
Thank you very for your help.

Try using the "Save as..." option to place the chaptered H.264/AAC movie in a MOV file container.
It seems that my movie is not in the podcast folder but in the movie folder. Does it make any differences?
Not as far as playback is concerned in iTunes or on the iPod.
And if yes how can I transfer my exported-for-ipod movie from the movie folder to the podcast folder (in the ipod).
An file created using the "Movie to iPod" export option is (supposedly) compatible with playback on an iPod. This process does not, however, create a Podcast. To turn you iPod compatible file into a Podcast, run it through an application like Podcast Maker. This will mark the file internals properly, upload the file to your server, and take care of XML/RSS requirements.

  • Export with chapter marker to iDVD

Ok something has slipped from my memory.
I'm trying to create a DVD of my recent project. I created 12 chapter markers with the first being 00:00:15:01 into it. I exported it to Quicktime movie (not conversion) I selected add Audio and Video and include Chapter Markers. I made it not self contained. But no chapters appeared in iDVD? I tried including All Markers and also tried including Studio Pro markers without success.
    Any suggestions?
    John

I've exported a sequence with chapter markers using Quicktime conversion and all the chapter markers show up except for the last one. Looking back at the original sequence in FCE, this last chapter marker is the only one that is a pink marker on the clip rather than a green marker on the timeline. I've tried several times to delete this chapter marker and re-create it. Each time, it reappears as a pink marker tied to the clip. Is there a way to force it into the timeline? The only difference between this chapter marker and the others is this one is located at the beginning of the credits at the end of a movie which were created using the Boris plug-in for a scrolling title. All the others appear correctly in the timeline were tied to normal video clips.
Would the fact that I'm creating a chapter marker in the part of the sequence created using the plug-in cause the marker to behave differently?

  • Duplicated chapter marks

I've just found out about the ability to add chapter marks to QuickTime movies, something which is incredibly useful and should be exploited more often. But I can't seem to get it to work properly...
Let's say I create a plain text document with my chapter names called "text1", and open that file in QuickTime. When I 'select all', copy, go to my movie, select 'Add to Selection and Scale', go into Movie Properties, choose Other Settings > Chapters [etc...] the little menu that pops up in the timeline shows all of my chapter names perfectly. At this point, I haven't exported "text1" from QuickTime as a text-to-text document.
When I do export "text1" as a text-to-text document and open "text1" in TextEdit, I get a list of my chapter names and timecodes - I change these timecodes to the corresponding chapter name, and save the file as "text2".
When I open "text2" in QT and go through 'select all', copy, Movie Properties [etc...] the little menu that pops up in the timeline seems to duplicate most (but not all) of my chapter marks. So for example the list would show:
    Titles
    Titles
    Introduction
    Introduction
    Jo
    Jo
    Claire
    Journey
    Journey
    Arrival
    Arrival
    Dinner
    Party
    Afterwards
Clicking on the 'duplicate' chapter name takes me to a point in the movie that I haven't specified. This happens *every single time* I put in the correct timecodes to the corresponding chapter name; with every single movie I try, and it's really quite frustrating.
I know it's a long post - but any help would be much appreciated from you lovely people
    17" iMac G4 800Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   80GB, 768MB RAM

    1. Yes, I'm saving as a .txt file.
    2. Maybe I should have explained it a bit better; I think you might have misunderstood me. The first time I went through the procedure of added chapter markers, everything seemed to go okay, no error messages etc. I noticed that the chapter menu appeared in the timeline, so thought I'd have a look to see it was working okay before I actually saved the file - it was then I noticed that most of the chapter names had been duplicated.
So then I decided to try again from the beginning; creating a new .txt file with my chapter names, opening and exporting that .txt file from QuickTime. At this point I'd normally open that new file in TextEdit and input the relvant timecodes; but I decided to import that file into my movie, *as if* I'd already put in the relevant timecodes. When I did this, my chapter names appeared fine, no duplications etc. Thinking that everything was okay now, I'd open this .txt file in TextEdit and put in the relevant timecodes, save, and use that file in QT - but the chapter names are duplicated in QT.
It seems that my chapter names are only ever duplicated whenever I put in my own timecodes in the .txt file (after exporting as a text-to-text in QT). and yes, I'm using QT Pro 7.04, repaired permission etc I do appreciate your help in this.

  • Adding Chapter Marks makes DVD audio not work

I sent a 65-minute video to Compressor from Final Cut Pro X. In Compressor I used the 'Dolby Digital Professional' and 'MPEG-2 for DVD' settings from the Disc Burning folder as targets, and added a job action to create the DVD. I left all default settings. DVD worked fine with good audio and great picture. Then I manually added Chapter marks in Compressor and created another DVD. This DVD had no sound for about half the video. Any ideas on how I can add Chapter marks in Compressor without losing audio? This is for a school Talent Show with about 25 different acts, so I really want to have a Chapter selection on the DVD. If I try other apps to make the DVD (FCP X, iMovie, iDVD) the video quality suffers terribly, so I'm hoping I can get Compressor to work. Thanks for any help.

I've come up with a fairly straightforward workaround for this. In Final Cut Pro X, before sending to Compressor, do an audio-only export to an AC3 file (Share...Export media, select "Audio Only" for Export and "AC file" for Audio file format). Then use the "Send to Compressor" function from the Share menu in FCP X. In Compressor, create a DVD using the standard "Dolby Digital Professional" and "MPEG-2 for DVD" settings and adding a "Create DVD" job action. Make sure the target AC3 file name in Compressor has a different name (or location) than the AC3 file you created in FCP X. The resulting DVD does have intermittent audio as before, so it can be discarded.
    Here's the trick:
Open the folder containing the Compressor-created AC3 file, copy the file name, then move that file to the Trash. Find the FCPX-created AC3 file, rename it with the name of the Compressor-created AC3 file, and move it into the folder where the Compressor-created AC3 file was before you moved it to the Trash. Now you can resubmit your job from Compressor and it will burn a new DVD using the AC3 file you created from FCP X, which should have good audio. For me this created a great looking DVD with the high quality MPEG-2 video from Compressor, and the good audio AC3 from FCP X.
I think there is a bug when sending FCP X projects with multi-cam portions to Compressor. I've seen two other cases of this on the discussion boards and multi-cam appears to be the common thread. I can't think of any logical reason that an AC3 file created in FCP X would sound fine, but the same FCP X project sent to Compressor results in an AC3 file with intermittent audio.
At one time I thought the issue was exceeding the capacity of the DVD. But after experimenting I learned that an AC3 file created in Compressor from my multi-cam FCP X project has intermittent audio, even without a "Create DVD" job action. (I used VLC to play back the AC3 file and had the same intermittent audio I had with the DVD).

  • Beginning Chapter Marker

    Hello,
I posted this question earlier and received some helpful info., however, I am still having a problem. To quickly recap, I brought a project from Final Cut Studio, into iDVD (I have DVDSP but still new to this and have not learned to use yet). I created chapter markers in FCP, then exported to a non-self-contained quick time movie, then imported to iDVD. I was told that in order to get rid of the chapter marked 'beginning', (my first chapter in FCP was NOT created in the first second, or the last. It wasn't until about 5 seconds in) to just rename it, after deleting the actual first chapter that I wanted (therefore renaming that one). However, the problem remains that if I do rename it to the first chapter that I want, it starts in the very beginning of the movie, rather than if about the 5th second of the movie, which is where I want it to start, because it matches up to a text frame. Since I now have 4 menu pages, I am only 'allowed' to put music onto 3, therefore leaving the 4th menu pg. with no music. If I did not have this 'beginning' chapter marker, it would have fit onto 3 pgs. I tried deleting it in the 'maps' section, but it did not work, I only got the 'error sound'. Any help w/this would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

    Hi Kristina
I think I would address the FCP-forum or may be the FCE (though they don't
get DVD-Studio pro in theis bundles).
Not really getting Your problem. I wounder what the first Chapter 5 sec in
should be good for that "Just start from beginning = Play movie" wouldn't do.
The Chapters in iDVD doesn't play an individual Chapter but is just in-points
to the full movie. Selecting one eg Ch.5 will result in a start at Ch5s beginning
    playing to the movie end.
If You want a play one Chapter function You only have two alt:
    - Use DVD-Studio pro (OK I'm in the same boat - steep learning curve)
    - Reduce the movie to iDVD to half size (duration) than include each Chapter
as an individual movie too. Only way in iDVD.
    Yours Bengt W

  • FCP Chapter Marker Limit for iDVD (muxing error)?

I'm attempting to create disc images in iDVD 7.0.3 for a 2 DVD set created in FCP 4.5. I've exported QT movies with chapter markers for both of my Disc A and Disc B projects. Disc A (1 hr 56 min and 16 chapters) writes just fine to disc image but Disc B (1 hr 40 min and 32 chapters) has given me fits for days, continually leading to "Muxing preparation (project conversion) error". I've tried a number of attempts at fixes per the forums to no avail (checking the placement of my chapter markers, avoiding special characters in marker names, etc.) I've even tried killing the "Scene Selection" menu. Is there a chapter marker limit in iDVD then? Have I really exceeded this with 32? I ask this for my latest test this morning in which I split the Disc B project into two (evenly splitting the content as well as # of chapters between test B-1 and B-2 projects) led to successful creation of disc images for both. However, I want to put the two back together again. Please help. Thank you.

Yes, I've heard that you should have either 15GB or 25GB free on your internal boot drive. I have 17GB available. Incidentally, my iDVD project files and disc images are being written to other drives attached to my system. I don't think this is the issue though since I've been operating in this environment for some time and have mastered a 2-DVD set a couple of months ago (2 hours on each disc) with no issues. I have even created another disc image of my 2 hour Disc A (to fix some editorial changes) with no issues. It's when it comes time to burn a DVD or write a disc image of my Disc B when it becomes an issue. Specifically, did you get the "there was an error during muxing preparation project conversion" error message then? Thanks.

  • Pausing @ Chapter Marker Won't Work.

I read on these boards how to create a DVD where playback pauses at a chapter marker for a unique DVD I need to create. While this worked great in Simulator, when I burned a DVD and played it both a PC laptop and my Desktop G5, the DVD paused at every FRAME. I was only able to advance by hitting the play button and going to the next frame of the video. Not what I was hoping for. (The final DVD will be running from a computer.)
Does anyone have any thoughts on what I need to do? Currently I am selecting the Chapter Maker and going to Playback Options: Pause: Infinite: Pause after each VOBU is checked.
    thanks in advance.

Uncheck the pause at each VOBU... this is a very small unit in the structure of a DVD and correlates to a single Group of Pictures (GOP), not the marker, which is a cell based item. A cell contains any number of VOBUs. Your 'infinite' pause should be enough.
    Have a look here:

  • Rename/Delete "Beginning" Chapter Marker?

In iMovie '11 (9.0.8) is there a way to either rename or delete the "Beginning" chapter marker it automatically places at the start of your project. I want to use chapter markers in my project, but I don't want one called "Beginning".

    Here's what I do:
When creating my chapter markers in Final Cut I do not create the first marker I want. I set my In and Out points to define the movie, and I move to where the second chapter will be and create that (Dance Two <Chapter>Two) and keep going till I'm done. Export as Quicktime Movie
When I bring the movie into iDVD it creates the correct number of chapters, except the Chapter One is called "Beginning" I just change the name in iDVD .. so I delete "Beginning" type over "Dance One" and that is Chapter One. Save the project to maintain the change.
That way I maintain the correct number of chapters and get the naming I require. BTW, DVD Studio Pro does the same thing .. at least the old version that I use

  • Encore Chapter marks not imported into Encore CS5

I am using Encore dynamic link with Premiere CS5.5 and the timelines are showing up minus all my encore chapter markers. I have gone back to make sure thathat every marker has a chapter title and the "Encore Chapter" marker is set in the option for the marker menu. Oddly enough a much smaller project I did a while back worked fine. Any suggestions?

A quick look, and I'm not sure how this can go wrong, as long as:
You are DLing a sequence that has the Encore marker in it (not in a sequence that is nested).
You are CS5 (or 5.5 I assume; I have CS5) and you are clicking on the Encore marker to add. CS5 does not require you to add names; Encore will autogenerate names if they are missing.
If this is not working, create a new PR project, add a short clip to a sequence, add one Encore marker, DL to a new Encore project. Does it come in?

  • Just duplicate QT movie with chapter marker dropdown!

    Hi,
This should be simple . . . very simple . . . but I don't think iDVD will do it? I have a QuickTime movie - shot with the HVX200, overcranked - stunning video with numerous chapter markers created in Final Cut Pro exported as a self contained movie. I love the way you can click the little window at the lower right side of the QT player, and the chapter markers just drop drown so you can choose which one you 'd like to see.
I'd like to create a DVD of exactly that . . . what looks like a QuickTime player where I just click the little play triangle, and it plays. To see chapter markers, just click the little number (chapter marker) at the bottom of the screen - and voila - the chapter marker dropdown comes down. Is there a way iDVD twill let the quicktime movie look exactly like . . . the quicktime movie? No menus, no special screens - just the QT player window and movie in it !
Can this be done? Thanks very much for considering. (I also posted this on the DVD Studio Pro board, just in case that'll do it?)
    Larry
    Thanks

I started to answer a while back and safari crashed so I gave up.
There's no way to get Keynote to see the chapters, but to answer your other question...
    try this:
    http://www.feelorium.com/
I think their Textation app lets you add chapter tracks.
I usually use Final Cut Pro to make chapters, then once I've run my final DV movie through compression those get stripped out. A few simple steps and you can graft the chapter file from your original DV file into the web versions (we do this every week at my church).
