Tutorials on creating read aloud epubs

Hi All
I want to create read aloud epubs in Indesign CC2014. Does anyone know of a good resource were I can learn how to do this
Thanks

I've been looking at this too. I've check out most of the 3rd party Indesign add ons. CircularFLO seems to make the read-aloud option easiest, though I also want animations, and even though they have "over 70!" so-called animations they are pretty lame, and allow little controls over them. And you can't also have any InDesign native or imported Edge Animate animation in the document. I found that I can create much better animations easily inside InDesign. CircularFLO also doesn't have any added games or that sort of stuff. Though like I say, it is the easiest to do the read aloud markup. (But they don't answer emails.)
I am seriously considering the Aquadfadas InDesign tools, though their interface is a bit daunting, and I am finding their information on the website to be a bit inscrutable. They also have read-aloud, plus some animations and InDesign Native animations seem to work with it. They have Games as a premium add on. Though things can expensive pretty fast. Support is paid $130 for 1 issue for 12 hours. Yikes! (They also are not very responsive to email.)
The other solutions I've looked at Kitaboo, and Flipick don't see as robust and I don't like their business model. The third option is to do it ALL by hand in InDesign. Crack open the pub and add the SMIL file, hand coded, and mark up the sound files using Audacity, a very time-consuming and tedious process, that could go wrong, with many hours spent trying to figure out where it went wrong. And the third party apps look better and better. Adobe's peeps here on the forums have told me that they have NO PLANS to support any kind of read aloud tool in InDesign. WHY???? Clearly there is a need for it. I would even pay for such a tool separate from my rather expensive subscription to CC.
All of these companies are dismissive of the little guy/gal and they pretty clearly only want to help giant clients with lots of money. Nothing new there I suppose. Sigh. We're on our own.

  • Some words are not highlighting on my read-aloud epubs after updating IOS 6.0.1 and iBooks 3.0.1

Some words are not highlighting on my read-aloud epubs after updating IOS 6.0.1 and iBooks 3.0.1 on both my iPad 2 and iPad 3. They are working absolutely fine earlier. I even updated the latest version of iBooks 3.0.2 but nothing is working. Can anybody help?

    Hi spati,
I ran into this problem as well.  Seems like something funky going on with iBooks 3.  Anyways, I had to tweak my read-aloud clip starts in the smil.  Where the word was not highlighting, I added a few milliseconds to the timing until the word started highlighting again.  Not the most ideal solution, and not sure what exactly causes it because 90% of the words were just fine, but it seemed to fix the problem.  Note prior to the problem happening, I had all my clip start timings = clip end timings for the previous word, so there were no gaps.
    Regards,
    Tim

  • My Read Aloud ePub producing popping sounds despite clean audio, any suggestions?

    Hello Experts,
I'm having trouble with my Read Aloud ePub, when loaded to iPad and run through iBook, some of the pages produce pop sounds before the narration starts. I have separate audio for each page and they are clean. Audio don't have any popping or clipping sounds in it but when run in iPad it produce pop sounds.
    Any suggestions?

  • Creating "read along" ePubs

Hi! I'm sure this topic has been beat to death but for the life of me I can't find anything on it, maybe I'm googling the wrong phrase.
I want to create an interactive eBook for the iBookstore that has the newly-supported read along feature, where the audio is synced with the text and each word highlights as it is read. I know how to import audio and video into InDesign for an ePub, but is there anyway, within InDesign (I also have Audition if that would help), to create the highlighted read along text to export as ePub for iBooks?
    Thanks!
    Amber

That's a non sequitor. Of course, but that doesn't mean those developers discovered this new option to their delight in InDesign and then decided to use it in their latest books. It works the other way around.
Adobe is known to lag behind about half a year, so don't hold ya breath.

  • Read aloud EPUB. Group two spans with one id.

I want two words, each on its own span (each has a different style. That's why it has to be two spans) to light up at the same time.
I tried grouping them on one span, or div with the same smil id. But it only lights up the first word.
Any idea how to make this work?
    Thanks a bunch!

    Hi Jeremy,
The access point only supports to have one BVI1 interfaced configured with an IP address since it is a basic layer 2 device.
Since it is IOS based you can try to configure an Ip address to more then one BVI1 but this will not work since the AP only supports an IP address configured on the BVI1 interface for managment of the unit.
Know the access point allows us to configure VLANs and for VLANS to work we need to link each VLAN to an specifc bridge group leaving always the bridge group one that is linked to the BVI1 for the VLAN the access point has an IP address of and set as native VLAN.
Here is the link that explains how VLANs work on the access points.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_configuration_example09186a00801d0815.shtml
If you work with VLANs you can have different subnets or VLANs linked to each SSID and each SSID with an specifc security method.

  • IBooks Author creating SMIL files for read aloud

Is there a tutorial on this somewhere?
I will need to do this in an.iba file as well as epub.

Hey, I am having problems with Audacity and making the audio labels. I have several articles and Liz Castrol's Book on how to make read aloud epub books. I even have the easy epub code editor app that generates code for the read aloud. I can't get past the track labeling because the labeling doesn't work the way I see it on all other sites. When I hit Command-B, it gives a red flag with a red square. It looks nothing like the blue < and > symbols I see on Audacity's web site and Liz Castrol's book. I have the latest Audacity but can't make labels right. When I save the .txt file, it has the numbers next to my labels (I typed in the words in the labels) and it outputs one set of long numbers next to each word. The sample in the book and on the app has two long numbers next to each word. What is going on with my version of Audacity? Does anyone have the same issue? My book reads aloud (when combining the audio and .txt file) but it does not highlight the words.

  • IBooks read aloud has a bug for reading epub 3 book

I have ten pages read aloud book. ibooks reads page 1 to 10 smoothly but sometime after page 5 it read aloud page 1 audio(it does not go back to page1) and then start reading page 5.
I closed the ibook reopen and then it works fine.
I am testing several times and it is not repeatable but occurs 2 of out of ten.
I verified my epub 3 book with validator and it works fine.
    Epubcheck Version 3.0
    Validating against EPUB version 3.0
    No errors or warnings detected.
    What could be wrong here?

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

  • Read Aloud Ebook questions

I have a client of mine who is in another country, I created a few read Aloud Ebooks for her using an app which is based around the Apple specs for epubs to be sold in the ibooks store. The client says that she cannot open an ibooks store account because it asks her for a U.S. tax id. Is this true as you can only have a US tax id to open an account?
    no way really?
If this is not true can someone tell me what the client needs to do in order to open an ibooks store account if the client is in Europe?
If the first question is answered then disregard the second.
thats the first question, second one is the client registered with lulu.com and gave me her log in and password to upload the books from there, if you know lulu they are agrigators and allow you to upload books for publication on all publishers like B&N , Amazon and Apple.
When I attempt to upload thru lulu I get errors which are Barnes and Noble related, not Apple. So how can I upload these books to the ibook store?

Im with Ann on this one. The misspelling of "poll" to "pole" gave the thread an entirely new meaning. I did however understand that he "hopefully" meant "poll" but you can never tell. And sometimes, posts are written without the best grammar in the world.

  • Read-aloud audio tagging and word highlight functions

There are third party apps* for this, but they lock you into their format and don't support every thing that a native FXL Indesign epub export does. Doing all the work manually for creating the SMIL file and marking the audio, etc. Is just way to hard and easy to fail at for most of us.
MANY publishers want this feature! PLEASE I beg of you, nobody can put their massive coding muscles behind such an effort like Adobe. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider adding an easy read-aloud margin function to the InDesign suite?
I would even pay extra for this. On bended knee, I beg you.
Aquafadas = inscrutable instructions. Expensive. French. (Can't be bothered to help customers.)
CircularFLO = easier read-aloud, but LAME-O animations, won't support InDesign animations. (Also no support. And they definitely do not want you guys to see their code.)
    Please?

  • Read aloud

I'd like to set the option read aloud to spanish language! I need your help! Thank you so much! Contact me to [email protected]

Yes, you can add read aloud to a completed iBook but you will need to add code (XML) to it. Here are some links on how to do it.

She is the only person right now who actually tells you step by step how to do it. I bought her book from Barns and Noble (but you have to order it because its a print on demand book). Its great and the only book I could find on the subject.
Also, if you don't want to touch code at all, this site called Kitepress will do it for you. They even send it to itunes for you and put it on Amazon for you too and do a little promotion by putting your book under their publishing name so all books link to ones made using Kitepress. (Don't know if this is good or not but something to think about) But they take a percentage out of any of your profit when you sell it.

  • How do you add read aloud to a fixed layout book?

I have seen some ibooks (childrens books) with read aloud abilities. I know you have to do some programming but what program do you use to edit the code, can you preview it in ibooks (on ipad) if you modify the code, and is there a non-programming way to add audio/speech to your ibooks through ibooks author? Does anyone know the process or what steps and programs needed to add the read aloud feature to an ibook? (I know there are many others out their who would like to know the answers to these questions). Thanks.
Also, I have HD images (2000x1462) for my ibook in ibooks author and when I preview it on an ipad 2, it downsizes it to regular quality (like 1400x1200 ish). Since I don't yet own an iPad 3, do the images stay HD quality when an ibook (from ibooks author) is viewed on an iPad 3?

Okay, I just finished building my Ibook in Ibooks Author. I tested one of the free ibooks (Peter Rabit) and liked how it reads to you. I have read many articles and other posts here on Apple.com and everyone seems to want to add this read aloud feature. I have the Fixed Layout EPUBs Miniguide and iBookstore Asse Guide 4_8 and even though the miniguide explains things step by step, its like reading Greek. I am new to programming. Since I assume you are an expert, what I need is help getting started. I'm pretty good at figuring things out, I just need to get a jumpstart as fast as possible. (I don't want to spend a whole month trying to add this read aloud feature).
    1. I have a finished book but its not looking like the fixed layout kids books I see on ibooks. Is there a simple way to just tell ibooks its a fixed layout and get rid of the textbook features without using programming? (I know there are people out there who agree with me)
    2. I know that I need a XML SMIL compatable text editor (BBedit is the only one I heard is free and good). But where do I begin? Is there some kind of template of code where I just add in the code to get the book to read from audio files? If I edit the epub file, will this book still be able to be sent to the iPad through ibooks Author for a preview?
    3. I am familiar with Audacity so the audio part is doable. But the coding is scaring me. To add a word by word reading for the ibook requires more programming.
    4. Tell me a short list of what I need to do in order. I have all this information but its overwhelming because I hate programming. (I tried making an iphone app and gave up because it required Xcode, which is way out of my league). I don't know where to start from my finished iBook so what is the next thing I need to do?
    Thanks Jessica

  • Adobe Acrobat XI will NOT read aloud any pdf files

Ever since I upgraded to Marvericks, Adobe Acrobat XI will NOT read aloud any pdf files. How can I fix this. It previously worked fine.
I create tagged pdf files in InDesign to be compatible with 508 accessibility standards. The files read aloud on a Mac with OS X Lion but not on Mavericks.

no, still no resolution. It is very frustrating. I did have one 8 page document that it will read the first page but nothing else.
    Did you find an answer?

  • Were to find tutorials on create php product page and listing of products

does anyone know were to find tutorials on create php product page with more then one image and a listing of products. Only to show not to buy products its basical to show products and to list them. Its to be done in dreamweaver can anyone help me Im having problems finding something.
    many thanks
    Richard

What you're proposing to do is not particularly difficult, but nor is it something that can be taught in a quick online tutorial.
The first problem you face is that Dreamweaver's PHP server behaviors were removed from Dreamweaver CC because they use deprecated code. The code still works, but it's scheduled to be removed from PHP at some future stage. A lot of online tutorials (as well as published books) also use the deprecated code. So, unless you know what you're doing, you could easily end up learning to do something that will need to be completely redone when the deprecated code is finally removed from PHP.
How you handle this depends on your existing skills and budget. To the best of my knowledge, Adobe doesn't have immediate plans to replace the PHP server behaviors with updated code. If you don't have experience with PHP, you might want to consider buying commercial Dreamweaver extensions to handle this for you. DMXZone has some excellent PHP data extensions, but they're not cheap. I'm not sure whether WebAssist has updated its data extensions yet, but again, they're not cheap.
If you're willing to do some hand-coding, you might find my beginner PHP courses on lynda.com give you sufficient confidence to build the solution yourself. If you don't have a subscription to lynda.com, you can get 7 days unlimited access to all courses (disclosure: this is an affiliate link). If you prefer written material, my PHP Solutions, 2nd Edition, covers all the PHP/MySQL skills you'll need to accomplish this task. It was written four years ago, but avoids using the deprecated code.
Whichever route you decide to take, make sure the solution uses either MySQL Improved (MySQLi) or PDO. You'll be wasting your time trying to pursue a solution that uses PHP's original MySQL functions.
    Good luck.

Ok, by reading the help pages on Adobe Digital Editions, I've just re-discovered this wonderful thing called VoiceOver on the mac.
When I have it turned on, it does read the contents of the epub. That is encouraging.
So my question now is how can I exert more control over VoiceOver so it will only read what I ask it to read instead of just everything on the screen and always starting at the beginning? I would like to use it like I have been using Read Aloud, ie highlight a passage and get VoiceOver to read (just) that.
    Thanks.
