TV Comparison: Sony vs. Samsung

When you walk into a retail store to view the latest TVs, it’s hard to know whether or not the picture you are seeing displayed in front of you is how the TV will actually look when you take it out of the box and mount it on your wall at home. The settings can be changed to have the TV look differently, but with a Sony you never have to worry about this happening. Sony’s TVs are designed to provide consumers with the most accurate depiction of what you are seeing – as if you are right there on the field as the quarterback throws the ball downfield to one of his receivers, or like you’re sitting in the front row of a concert theater as your favorite band takes the stage.

Complete utter BS!Picture quality meh, you need features that also play a huge part for customers that purchase TV's these day. I have to say Sony is NOT a brand that I would trust any more (since the good old time during the 1990's era). Marjor downside regarding to Sony TVs is; SoftwareSupportFeatures for Price Problem 1 (Motion Blur)For example most of the 2013  TV models suffer from motion blur but yet there is NO sort of option in order to eliminate some blur or completetly turn off the Motionflow XR which is awful when it comes to gaming or fast paced movies (Blu-ray). However when selecting different modes eg Cinema, Game, Sports not any sort of major difference. What's point in having awesome picture quality when they actually suffer from motion blur which isn't pleasing to the eyes! Problem 2 (Software)The software side from Sony is pants! Day by day it's getting worse. The UI on Sony TVs is just awful. Have a look at LG/SAMSUNG they offer far better and easier to use UI. Now when it comes to software update or support this is where Sony lacks big time. Same goes for the Xperia devices! This is one appauling department in Sony! Sony needs to wake up and revamp the UI! Problem 3 (Overpriced)Overpriced and not worth the money!Look at Sony products there are overpriced compared to the competitors such as LG/SAMSUNG and have less features! Problem 4 (Codec/Features)Sony TVs these days are not worth paying for.Competitors such as LG/SAMSUNG offer more features for a better price! For example the Sony KDL-40R473A doesn't even stand a chance against Samsung UE42F5000AKXXU yet the Sony model cost more! The SAMSUNG model has more features! (cough light sensor missing on Sony TV to start off with).Sony TV's have problem playing majority of movie files this even goes for support for subtitles too via USB playback.Limited aspect ratio support for USB playback!Limited options for tweaking settings eg different modes hardly make any difference.I can go on with the list... Problem 5 (Market Research)This is where Sony hasn't got a single clue! Why would you release several TVs with good/great pricture quality and not focus on motion blur/software/features etc? People these days want TV's that tick the following boxes;Picture QualityFeatures (eg motion blur removed)PriceSoftware/UISupportOnly thing that Sony ticks the box is regards to picture quality and everything else is just ignored! I for one have a feeling Sony will NOT exist in TV market by 2020 as the company will be vanished just like Hitachi!  Sony don't listen to the customers nor offer any suitable help, the support is becoming lame these days. Products these days from Sony are overpriced with limited features and in most cases are appauling. Software side is a major downside it's like if someone working at Sony mentions software update, he/she probably get's thrown out of the window! Regarding software, majority of your products suffer hugely from this for example Bravia TV's, Xperia and your Sony UK website (404 Error).  I for one have lost faith in Sony!Sony PS4 I will give a miss too, it's Microsoft Xbox One for me!

  • My Macbook Pro wont play sound through Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter on toshiba television anymore. The sound plays through sony or samsung television, but not toshiba television.

I have a Macbook Pro early 2011 running on mountain lion version 10.8.2. A while back, i purchased a mini display port thru HDMI port so i could watch dvds on my toshiba television. it all worked great for a while, then the sound just stopped working. At first, I thought the mini display port connector must have broke, until I plugged it into a sony television and it worked. I also tried using it through a samsung television and it worked just fine. Why does it not work through the toshiba television anymore? The picture works fine, but the sound does not come thru the television anymore. My mac is set to play sound thru the HDMI port and it doesnt. When i switch it to built in internal speakers, the sound comes thru my mac, but when i switch it, no sound comes out. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thank you!

I am still waiting to receive a response from them, but i dont think they'll be much help. the television still works fine and all of the ports on the back, including both HDMI ports, work perfectly.

  • Headphones comparison : Sony MDR-EX71SL vs MDR-EX5

    Hi folks,
Can somebody explain me the diff between the 2 mentioned headphones : Sony MDR-EX7SL vs MDR-EX5LP.
I've noticed many people on this forum promoting the EX7, and then SSR is often mentioning them side by side EX5/7 when making recommendation.
I can't seem to understand what the difference is between the 2. They seem to have the same tech specs. Is it in the wiring or the supplied case?
Background : I would be interested to get some headphones to augment my Zen Micro experience (mostly used on walk / train to work).
    thanks for helping.
    - Fred.
ps : this is not intended as a Sony commercial ;-)

So, anyone else has personal experience choosing between the 5 or 7? Here in Belgium, they don't seem to come cheap. I can find the 5 in a rather expensi've store for 45 EUR, and I found the 7 in a cheap store for 55 EUR. (multiply by .3 to get $ amounts).
and yes, I would guess you can easily find an extension cord for this type of cable, especially as there's (to my knowledge) no special feature to that supplied extension cord you lost (like e.g. there's no volume controller or so on it).

  • Update error 1611, It isn't first time. My last ipod, next time i would buy sony or samsung.

Help me plx. i have The 1611 error. what can i do??

From the Apple articled cited at the bottom of my post:
Error 23, 28, 29, 40, 1002, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1611: These errors may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article and also attempt to restore while connected with a known-good 30-pin Dock Connector cable, computer, and network to isolate this issue to the device. If the MAC address is missingor the IMEI is the default value (00 499901 064000 0), this can also confirm a hardware issue.

  • How to transfer contacts from sony xperia z2 to samsung galaxy s5

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to transfer my contacts from my sony xperia z2 over to my samsung galaxy s5. Thanks

You can download the free app Samsung Smart Switch from Google Play store, then install it on both Sony Xperia and Samsung Galaxy S5. Run it on the two phones, then you can transfer all contacts from Sony to Samsung quickly.Alternatively, you can also transfer contacts from Android to Android with the helpful of one-click phone to phone data transfer tools.

  • Retina MacBook Pro screen(Samsung) compared to 2010 MBP screen

I was doing some comparison between my Samsung retina MBP and a Mid 2010 glossy 15" MBP in a room lit with daylight.  The quality in the screen is amazingly better and I am not referring to the resolution improvement.
Both are using the standard color display profile, 10.8.2, and Safari 6. (rMBP = retina version below)
    white saturation test: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php
rMBP: only 254 is not disinguishable from nearly every angle.
MBP: you can only distinguish up to 248 with 0 degree viewing angle.  Only when you start looking 60+ degrees off center can you distinguish up to 251 but then you have severe color distortion.
    Black level test: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php
rMBP: Easily pick out down to 8.  If I look hard enough I can distinguish down to 5. In dark room can barely make out down to 3.
MBP: Easily down to 7 and down to 5 if you change viewing angle.
    Contrast: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast.php
rMPB: see equal steps in brightness across entire range
MBP: past 24 the bars look fairly uniform and not easy to distinguish steps, last 2 bars are saturated
    Viewing angle: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/viewing_angle.php
rMPB: red text on entire screen at 0 degree viewing angle with little to no change of text at different viewing angles
MBP: Looking at 0 degree viewing angle the text appears all different shades of red depending on what part of the window you look at.  Look like black striped text at top of window and the correct "red" at bottom when viewing angle centered in middle of screen.

retina macbook pro late 2013 13 inch:
    white saturation test: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php
rMBP: All them are distinguishable, but you should look very close to see the 254.
    Black level test: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php
rMBP: with brightness set to highest, I can't see first 5 squares in a room with daylight condition.
    Contrast: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast.php
rMPB: with brightness set to highest, bar 1 is still not distinguishable from background.
This is my first laptop, I thought is should be much better, since I had heard that the screen is jaw-dropping, eye-popping, But it is not at all something special, my old, low resolution, cheap LG computer monitor is better in some of the tests.

  • Samsung VS LG Panel Observations

Iniitally had a LG display, sent it for replacement and got a Samsung in return:
    1st display - LG Display
    • Overall pinkish hue
    • Apple Logo on back of the display looked pink under various lighting conditions
    • Uniformity problems, display slightly redder on left side.
    • Image retention problems, but not as distracting as I would have imagined.
    • Four "white mura" pressure marks built up gradually over a five month period, two strong ones on the center-right, two faint ones on the bottom right.
    • Dead pixel appeared after 5th month of use.
    2nd display - Samsung
    • Overall yellowish hue
    • Apple Logo on back is normal white.
    • Colors feel less saturated than the LG, a sepia tone seems to pervade most colors
    • Backlight feels warmer, more comfotable to stare at for extended periods of time.
    • Small text is easier to focus on <-- not sure why
    • Excellent color uniformity, left and right sides almost perfectly balanced
    • Seems slightly brighter than the LG
Conclusion: neither one is "perfect", but if Apple offered me the choice again, LG vs Samsung, I would pick Samsung's in a heartbeat, even if the white mura pressure marks, image renetion, and dead pixels were all fixed.  The Samsung offers a strange feeling of "backlight stability" that makes it easier on the eyes than the LG.

    Hi there Knight-
I personally have an LG TV that I enjoy quite a bit.  I didn’t dive too deeply into all the technical aspects when purchasing it, ultimately what made the decision for me was that I felt it offered the best picture of all the models available at that size.
I don’t recall that there were Sony or Samsung versions available in the 37” size I chose, so I can’t really speak to if the LG looked better than either of those brands.  My best suggestion would be to stop into your local Best Buy store, take a look at our display TV’s and ask any questions you might have of our home theater experts.  They should be able to help get you into a great TV that exactly fits what you are looking for.
    I hope this helps!

  • Help: Which cable to connect my macbook to my HDTV?

    Hi,
Perhaps somebody has posted something on that. I bought a Sony 17-inch HDTV and I have a macbook. The Sony TV came with a cable called HD15-H15 video signal cable.
Should I buy the Mini-DVI to DVI cable? Is there any other cable I should buy? I have read something about the HDMI cable... is that necessary? Isn't it just to connect the Mini-DVI to DVI cable to my HD15-H15 cable?
    Thank you so much!
    MIke

    Hi,
to clarify... isn't HD15 an analogue connector? Will DVI connector work on a HD15? You see, I have a Samsung "mosel" N7 LCD and it requires HD15 connection and only the mini DVI to VGA converter works, and my Mini DVI to DVI converter does not work apparently. I think it applies to Sony as well, anyone can confirm that?
Anyway, I find the macbook's display really pales in comparison to the samsung, so much so that now I run my mac on the living room display and using the macbook's display only on the road. Just my 2 cents worth. Once you're on the extended colour gamut of newer generation LCD HDTVs, you won't want the macbook's display anymore, trust me!
But I still love my macbook, for all that it's worth, it's worth every cent!

  • I would like to see my home videos in HD - but have not been sucessful

OK I'll start off by saying, I think I'm fairly intelligent but after going thru about 50 dvds, maybe not so much. If anyone can give me an idiot guide (step by step) I would really appreciate it. My goal is to get small movie clips on my DVD so I can play them on my Sony or samsung blu ray player
    I'm using the following:
    - canon HF100 camcorder that saves file in avchd.
    - imovie 08 and/or imove hd.
    - toast 9.0.4
    - sony blu ray (s350) and also have a samsung 1500 blue ray
I've tired to import avchd into imovie hd from my camcorder, but found i cannot do so - so I import into imovie 08 using the best quality, then open the files in imovie hd and edit, etc. (from what I read imovie hd is 'better' than 08 - still trying to get use to it). I'm assuming I don't really have to do anything else here - just want to make sure I'm importing at best quality.
After I edit the video, i've exported using quicktime (I only have the reader version 7.5.5) in both imovie hd & 08, the quality seems poor (on the mac - just does not look like hd). I've burned quick time file to dvd using toast, but neither blu ray player is able to read the disk (know it was a long shot). I've played around with a bunch of different settings in imovie 08, but really don't know what I'm doing and none of the disks looked very good. I've not gotten into any of the advance settings in imovie hd yet.
I've also copied the avchd files (disk image of my canon card) to dvd and neither player can play the raw files (though they apparently play avchd format)
I've successfully burned things using idvd - but it is not hd.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

Plus you will need to buy a Blu ray DVD burner.
There have been discussions about quality issues with iMovie 08 because it uses single field processing to create the video images. Basically, this removes half of the lines of resolution from your original footage. This has to create some loss of quality. iMovie HD6, on the other hand, does not do this, keeping both fields intact.
iMovie 08 was really created to appeal to You Tubers and other web video users, where high quality is less of an issue. iMovie HD6 and previous versions were created to appeal to the budding moviemaker who wants a pro style editing platform with great quality, but ease of use, as compared to Final Cut programmes. That's also why iMovie HD6 was designed to work solely with miniDV tape cams, in either SD or HD format. DV Stream is a lossless format that produces superior results to any of the other high compression formats, such as AVCHD.
So, you need to spend more money to get HD DVDs, but your quality will suffer using iMovie 08, which your camcorder forces you to do. Perhaps some consideration of a suitable cam to begin with will be of help.

  • New W530 setup questions...

Just received my W530 in the mail and I've been trying to get up to speed on all the new technology out there and how to properly setup my computer... I've tried various searches but haven't got a clear answer I don't think - here goes:
    W530 8gb RAM (2x4), K2000, 500 gb HDD with raid option, x64 win 7, hi res screen
I already bought a Samsung EVO SSD 250GB for the main drive which I will pickup from my US mailbox on Monday.
The reason I bought the computer is because my 4 year old Acer just couldn't handle the intensity of PlanSwift and On-Centre digital estimating programs for construction. In addition I dabble with Chief Architect Premiere for 3D house design and the Adobe Suite to do graphics stuff for the company, etc., etc. I will likely take some CAD related courses at school as well in the future.
My plan was to install OS and programs on the new SSD in the main bay and keep current project files on there. All misc pictures, videos and company files and other things on the HDD which would be in the UltraBay. I currently use about 180 GB and have another 250GB stored on an old laptop which I'd like to transfer over so everything is on one laptop. That one will be for internet searches in the garage for dirtbike repairs
    Questions:
    1. Is it worth getting a 128 GB mSata drive for the OS (under $100 for Crucial)? Then have all program files on SSD in main bay and misc files on HDD in ultrabay? do I need an adapter for the ultrabay or is it already able to accept the HDD in the ultrabay? I haven't popped out the ultrabay yet to see...
    2. I hear of using the mSata drive for Caching? Is 128 GB enough for OS and caching? When is the caching helpful? Should I use the mSata just for caching?
    3. Do I setup the computer with the OS on the HDD in the main bay and then clone/image it to the mSata drive oro SSD drive? Or do I start with the SSD in the main bay? I'm really confused on this part...
    4. If necessary I will upgrade the RAM later - I think this is a straightforward upgrade as long as the voltages with the original RAM are the same - is this correct?
    5. I currently use a Sony KDL 40XBR8 TV as a second monitor at work - what connection should I be using to get the best display settings? I currently use an HDMI with my Acer for no particular reason. I also have an Acer 23" at home which will be replaced with another Sony or Samsung TV when we move into our new house...
sorry for the noob questions... I am typically really good at finding answers to my questions but i really didn't find any clear answers or they were so technical I didn't realize it was the answer to my question ;-)
Can someone give me a practical approach to setting up my computer so I can start off right... thanks!!
    Daniel
    Thanks in advance
    Daniel
ps can't wait to light this thing up with the SSD! It should rip pretty good...
    | W530 | i7-3630QM | 16GB DDR3 | 128GB mSATA | 250GB 840 EVO | 500GB HDD | 1920x1080 | QUADRO K2000M |

Hi Daniel.  When I bought my w530 I immediately installed a 256gb SSD. And now, over a year later I'm looking at getting a 256gb mSata for the boot drive.
    1. The mSata port may only be Sata II but I figure it's not likely that I'll notice the difference.  High transfer rates are really only realized with large files and the OS is usually a large collection of very small files.  But that's just an opinion and your experience may vary.
For an ultrabay adapter, check out newmodeus.  Quite a few forum posts mention success with this adapter versus the cheap ones from eBay.  I haven't bought one yet myself, but this is what I will get when the time comes.  (they also sell an adapter  to convert your optical drive into an external USB optical drive.)
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_7&products_id=400
Also, search the forum and be aware that there are many who report problems of the w530 kicking out the ultrabay drive, but it seems better with the newmodeus adapter (as I recall; it was quite a while back when I read about it).  I haven't looked at what ncix carries for adapters but would be interested to know if you find something that works.
And the drives shipped with the w530 come in different heights, and if it doesn't match the height of your SSD you will need rubber rails.  I still haven't ordered mine and I'm letting my drive sit in the overheight internal bay without proper support.   I just carry it very carefully.  I'm not sure of the best place to get rails, direct from Lenovo or elsewhere.  Last time I checked with Newmodeus they didn't sell just rails, but that may have changed (it was quite a while ago that I checked).
    2. Caching only helps if your OS boot partition is on a traditional harddrive.  With an SSD you won't utilize the caching as it won't be any faster (and may be slower).
    3. I would try installing direct to the mSata/SSD instead of cloning.  For a new system it's probably just as easy and less prone to issues.  Windows will take care of alignment, etc., and turning off features unnecessary for SSD (superfetch/prefetch/and all that).
I also don't believe it necessary to install Win7 fresh.  It depends on your view.  I didn't want the hassle of tracking down a legit copy of Win7 install that I would trust, not to mention the hassle of installing it.  Instead, I made the restore DVD(s) using the Lenovo tools whlie the original harddrive was installed, then switched the drive with the new SDD and restored from the DVDs.  Then I went through and uninstalled any Lenovo software I didn't think was useful.  It's been working nicely ever since and I don't regret not starting with a fresh install.  Your experience may vary, though.
    4. Upgrading ram is very easy.  I'm not sure about specs, but if you don't match voltage and speed the system will downgrade both to the lowest common available.  You should be able to find many discussions about matching RAM voltage on the 'net.  You also would have to wait until your system arrives anyways because you don't know the specs of the RAM in advance (since Lenovo uses different suppliers).
I'm not sure how much RAM you'd need for CAD software.  I upgraded mine to 32gb because I didn't want to find myself wishing I had more (for software development).  I think I only ever hit as high as 20gb used, and am usually around the 6-12gb mark (depends on how many VMs I have going).
    5. Sorry, I can't answer your video question.  I use the docking station with two monitors via DVI.  I haven't tried HDMI.
Before you sell off the extra parts, make sure you don't need them for warranty coverage.  Warranty will only cover the system with original parts, so if you have to send in your system you would remove all custom parts and reinstall the originals.  I'm not sure about onsite service, if you have to revert your system or not to original specs.
All comments I made above were in respect of Win7 Pro.  I have no idea if anything changes under Win8/8.1.
Good luck!  I hope you enjoy your w530 as much as I do mine.

  • NOKIA, ARE YOU FINALLY GOING TO FIX THE EMAIL IN E...

Almost 4 months after I bought this stupid device, I still can't use it as a messaging device - I tried several types of setup and it always failed because of BUGS.
I have 3 gmail accounts and here is what I tried:
    1. I created Nokia Messaging account and registered my 3 gmail accounts - they appeared on the device, but no e-mails were ever delivered - FAIL
    2. I created Ovi mail account and forwarded my 3 gmail accounts to it, then registered the Ovi account in Nokia Messaging  - it received e-mails, but it didn't support the Cyrillic alphabet - 90% of the messages were unreadable - FAIL
    3. I setup direct IMAP connections to my gmail accounts - it worked for some time, then one of the accounts stopped receiving mail. After some debugging, I found that if I receive e-mail with .EML or .MSG attachment, the E72 mail client is not able to receive mail anymore, at least from gmail. Not to mention that the IDLE does not work and it's stated in the specs that it MUST - FAIL
    4. I don't want to try with POP3 because I'm almost sure what will be the result - FAIL
I tried all the above things several times with the hope that at least Nokia Messaging servers will be fixed in some way - WRONG, NOTHING WAS FIXED IN THESE 4 MONTHS!
So, I paid money for this phone and 4 months later I'm still unable to use it? And there is no any sign of new firmware coming to fix it? I have seen many mail client implementations (outlook, win mobile, thunderbird, your own E71 client) and none of them had such STUPID BUGS. I'm still using Outlook 2003 and it never failed in such stupid way and it is so old.

Unfortunately, Nokia seems to be focused to earn money, not to offer the most competitive products. And their outstanding financial results prove this. The days when Nokia was a pioneer in this field are long gone.
These days, all inovations are found elsewhere:
Best camera: Sony Ericsson / Samsung
    Best display: Samsung
    Best design: Apple iPhone
    Best E-mail client: Windows Mobile
    Best music player: Apple iPhone
Best web browser: Apple iPhone / Android
    Best OS: Android
and so on and so forth.... I cannot rememeber anything that Nokia offers best.
But I cannot blaim them. They offer cheap products with reasonable features, solid build, good all-rounder, and the share-holders are happy.

  • N8/C7 PURPLE SCREEN ISSUE AND HOW TO SPOT IF YOU H...

MODS THIS IS NOT A POLL OR IN ANYWAY SHAPE OR FORM A VOTING THREAD IT IS A THREAD TO WARN USERS ABOUT THE PURPLE SCREEN ISSUE AND HOW TO SPOT IT IN THEIR PHONES CLEAR AS DAY , I HAVE BEEN INFORMED FROM THE DIRECTOR OF COMUNICATIONS AT NOKIA VIA TWITTER THAT THIS THREAD IS OK AND THE TEST IMAGE IS FINE TO LOAD UP
The following has been added by vandelay (Nokia administrator) :
Please note that there is normally a slight variation in the purple color level in each display
unit. This is related to the display manufacturer's optical tuning process. However, some Nokia C7 and Nokia N8 users seem to be experiencing a
slightly higher level of purple color tint on their device screens.
Nokia Care's technical experts told me that the easiest way to spot this problem is to just look at the black idle screen of the device - if there is a clear purple color tint on the idle screen, you should have the device inspected at a Nokia Care point. They will repair the device the device under warranty if there is a clear defect in the device.
So seeing some purple on the test image does not necessarily mean that your screen is faulty, but we hope that it helps some people to decide whether they should visit a Nokia Care point.
    (end of vandelay's addition)
as you may or may not have read many n8s and c7s have a purple tint issue
this can easily be spoted by saving the picture below to your pc , transfering it to your n8/c7 , then viewing the image in your gallery
if the image shows purple squares in some areas then iam afraid you have one of the screens that is showing defects in gradiation of colurs and the greyscale
there are also many n8s out in the wild that dont have this problem , i have 3 n8s , my gfriend has one , hers is perfect and shows the test image with no purple tint at all my three n8s all have purple tint and some display it worse then others
the test image can be viewed on any brightness and it should display just as it does on your monitor screen ,my gfriends n8 displays the image perfect under all brightness levels yet my three n8s show the purple tint heavily on low brightness and not as much on full brightness
the test image can also be viewed via tv out and hdmi out and again if you have a defect screen you will see the image perfect on your tv yet on your n8 screen you will have purple tints
here is the test image for you to load to your device and view via the gallery
as stated above if you have one of the screens with defects in colour gradiation you will see some of the squares as purple
this shouldnt be happending as there n8s out there that display the test image perfectly
from all my research on this in the last month and my time studying ICT systems support in which i have a diploma , it seems clear to me that nokia have used at least two screens in the build of the n8
many phones bought between october launch and december dont have the problem yet there are still some that do but not as many as now , phones bought from the end of december up untill current date seem to have the issue moreand its now nearly impossible to find one without the purple tint issue
this leads me to believe that from the start nokia were using at least two screen in the n8 , then one started to run out around december and by the end of december a huge majority of n8/c7 handsets have the troubles, if not all of them shipped after december
infact ive been to every phone shop in lakeside , chelmsford , colchester which included : carphone warehouse , o2 , vodafone , orange , three ,  phones4u , tmobile all n8/c7 handsets i asked to look at had the problem not one n8 i looked at didnt have the issue
i have been in contact with nokia care escalation team , all they did is send me very badly refurbed handsets back for my brand new n8s ,  which across all three handsets had the following faults
    #hdmi covers scratched and worn
#no imei number under the hdmi cover on one of them
#torx screws on battery cover very worn
#plastic top caps not fitted right
#one had a huge gap between the silver screen surround and the main chasis of n8
#they all still had purple tint issue
so nokia sent me three refurbed handsets for my brand new n8s , i obvously complained as they were so new i could have taken them back to the shops with the reciept but now nokia had changed the imei numbers my reciept was useless , i said i should be sent three brand new n8s , they again sent me badly refurbed handsets just as bad as the 1st lot and again all three of them had purple screen issues
i complained again and this time supervsior took over the case and agreed that 3 new n8s should be sent to me as mine was so new , she got them sent out and this time they were new but they still have the purple screen issue
thats a toatal 12 n8s direct from nokia and all of them have had the issue  so i cant recomend going to a nokia care point or nokia care uk as the refurbs i was sent was a complete joke and looked like they were just used handsets that had been through a rough time
through this month of me talking to nokia and sending emails and getting these phones swapped back to a condition of the phones that i sent them , they have said they are investigating it and taking it seriously however after some of their actions towards users (myself included) on these forums it doesnt seem like they are taking it very serious at all , they have known about it for a month now and we still have not had an offical response from nokia themselves

    http://n8geeks.com/nokia-n8-amoled-display-issue/
there are many more threads about this issue across the net and if you google n8 screen problems or n8 purple screen problems you will come acroos many many pages of unhappy users from all across the globe
i just hope nokia sort this out soon
ho do you users with the problem feel about this issue and how do you think nokia should resolve it
id be happy for a screen swap at a nsc or via warranty postal repair as long as it could be done quickly and the user wasnt without their phone for too long after all this is nokias mistake and not the users that bought the phone so all fixes should be at minimal disturbance to them
heres hoping when you test the image your not as unlucky as me and many other n8 owners from across the globe , its a brilliant phone but this screen issue lets it down alot especially during watching films and stuff

sorry to hear you guys are having troubles too , its a shame sucha  great device as the nokia n8 has had an issue like this arise , it is effecting alot of n8/c7 handsets and is quite a widespread issue across the globe
it would be great to hear from as many users as possible about this and what they think about it as a user of the c7/n8
    jimmyireland about your post mate
yes it was written by me and yes it ws deleted not once but 3or4 times actually
the mods said it was because i had set up a poll and voting system , so i read through forum rules and posted it again with what fitted their guidelines and even put in big caps that it was not a poll but a thread to help users identify a problem and discuss it which is what the forum is for , it was deleted again , i then posted it again with just the test image and how to spot the problem and again put big caps that the post fitted their guidelines and was just to help users , it was again deleted and i was banned by mods for 2 days saying that i had broke forum rules and posted a poll and that the test image wasnt a proper test image
i then asked other users to post the image but when they tryed nokias spam filter kicked in with a message saying that their post contained spam and that they should write it again and try posting again
to be honest it really looked like they were trying to cover up the issue , fair enough my 1st post could be considered a very very rough poll but the posts i made afterwards were edited to fit nokias guidelines and they still removed them ad banned me and then other users posts were marked as spam
so i tweeted alot of people and even nokia have said that as long as the post doesnt contain polls/votes then it will be fine to postand that mods shouldnt delete it , which was excellent news and hopefull this thread will stay and users can load the image and test their screens and then discuss the issue here so nokia can see users discussion in one thread , it will alo help awareness of the issue
hence this post that isnt a poll but a thread to help users identify wether their n8/c7 has a screen with a defect in the gradiation of colours
as stated in original post not all n8s have this problem my gfriends doesnt and it displays the test image perfectly on all brightness settings , yet my n8s show the image as very purple on low brightness and the brighter the screen goes the less the purple is shown , it is still there just not as visible as it is in the lower brightness settings
as i also mentioned many n8s between october and mid december are fine although some still have the problem , yet from mid december till current date the amount of n8s with purple issue is much much higher and it now seems very very rare that you will get a brand new n8 from the shops without this screen issue which leads me to believe that from launch nokia have used at least two screens in the builds of the n8 , some great screens and then the ones with dodgy purple tint , from the threads across the web it seems like the good screens nokia were using either run out or they have failed to source the same screen or the manufactuer of the screen has changed something
iam not a nokia hater and iam not here to cause trouble or loose nokia sales etc
i love nokia have used them for years and used symbian since the 6680 , iam always helping users across the web with their nokia problems and am an avid user on nokia users please check my profile and feel free to check my posts and how many times ive been thanked for being helpfull
    http://www.nokiausers.net/forum/members/buxz777.html
as you can see i love nokia and spend alot of time using their devices , speaking highly of them and helping their users with problems, i also love good customer services and customer relations
i understand that big companys have build issues iam a gadget lover and trained in ict supprt iam not silly and understand that these things happend and building these phones with such complicated electronics and some could end up with issues , it could happend to anyone , sony , apple , samsung , blackberry , lg etc etc
however its how the companys react to these issues and relate to their customers that have spent 100s of pounds on their devices that is important , issues do arise , its how the company looks after its customers thats important
i think alot of users think the same , they dont expect nokia to click their fingers and go heres a fix but they do expect nokia to investigate the issue and they do expect nokia to relate to its customers and not ignore them or the issue which is what it looks like when posts are deleted and users are banned for posting informative posts that help users identify a problem
things like sending users really bad refurbs for brand new n8s also dont help users confidence in nokia statement of going to nokia care about the problem as all i got was second hand looking n8s that still have the problem they were sent off with and the originals were in much better condition
like i say iam not here to cause trouble and i love nokia the n8 is the best phone ive ever had and its almost my dream device and everything ive wanted on a device for years its the ultimate convergance device and agadget lovers dream , however when you see your gfriends and some of your mates n8 screens display the test image perfect then your n8 display it with a very purple hue it does dissapoint you and you do hope that nokia will take notice and fix the issue with the least amunt of hassle to the users
cheers jimmy and sorry about the long post just wanted to clear some things up
now lets get back to discussing the issue and what other users think about it
    have a great evening

  • Installing old application to OS Windows 7 64-bit

I have OS Windows 7 64-bit on computer and I am trying to download software from Amervets that is a Military Database.  The webmaster from that site stated:
The War Library military-access software works on ALL versions of Windows from Win 1.0 to the present, and all UnRestricted bit formats from 8-bit to 1024-bit (current). It sounds like you were lured into purchasing
a Restricted-mode, 64-bit-only version of Windows. This is common in Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Sony (Toshiba), Samsung (Acer), Compaq and Gateway which primarily sells service assistance and upgrades.
2/2. It was not Microsoft's intent that the PC manufacturers named above remove or disable a primary Windows operating feature solely to resell that function as an upgrade when the user would inevitably realize some
    software programs won't run.
Dell tells me my OS is not restricted and the problem lies with the software program being written for a 16-bit OS and 64-bit is not compatible.  The Web master offered a work around to install a Virtual Box and down load what it called a unrestricted
Windows program.  But I am not too tech savvy and if the future lies in the 64-bit world . . .I would hope the software would soon be updated accordingly.
I guess my question to the pros at Microsoft who is telling me the truth??? and is there any hope of me getting this database on my computer so I can continue my research.
Thanks for any help you can give

    Hi,
Actually, we cannot install 16bit application on 64bit Windows 7.
In order to run a 16-bit program or a 32-bit program that uses 16-bit processes or 16-bit components, you must install the program on a 32-bit version of Windows. In order to run such a program, you can install a 32-bit version of Windows in a dual-boot
configuration with the 64-bit version of Windows. Then, you can restart your computer to the 32-bit version of Windows and install the 16-bit program or 32-bit program that uses 16-bit processes or 16-bit components.
You can refer to this article for details.
64-bit versions of Windows do not support 16-bit components, 16-bit processes, or 16-bit applications

  • New features for IPhone 3.0?

When the iphone 3.0 or 4.0 comes out "next" year, i hope it is solar powered and water proof. Why cant the iphone screen itself act as a solar cell that recharges the battery? If the iphone could do that, then it will truly change the world.
    Message was edited by: cibertek

    LOL
I'd already be happy if the next gen iPhone would finally get:
    - much better battery with at least a full day of normal use, better make that two. I don't want to have to charge the thing twice a day, in fact, I am often unable to charge before I get home in the evening.
    - full featured, uncrippled bluetooth 2.0 or better 2.1 (including data connections and stereo headset support) it's really annoying not being able to quickly send a contact to a coworker via BT and not be able to use iPhone with my in-car GPS which pulls traffic information from TomTom via BT Internet access
    - a less basic and limited, more complete Text messaging app with templates character count and all the other bells and whistles current phones from established manufacturers have.
    - individual forwarding options for "busy", "no coverage", "not answered" like any other contemporary mobile handset. right now forwarding to voice mail is all or nothing.
    - Generally a more complete core movile handset feature set that is on par with current handsets from the likes of Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung, LG and the like. Better yet Apple should show those guys that they can do one better instead of lagging years behind in core handset functions.
    - Multimedia messaging (MMS) support
    - Task / To-do sync support
    - Video capture support
    - Better camera with flash
    - Memory card support (Micro SD or similar)
    - more internal storage (32 / 64 / 128 GB?)

  • LCD TV for external monitor?

I have a 20" iMac with FCP 6, and I want to get a LCD TV to use as a second monitor. Since I've never done it before -- i.e. hooking up a second monitor to an iMac, or configured FCP to use one -- I was wondering if anyone has ever done that, and if it would be worth it. I'm considering getting a 32" 720P LG, Sony, or Samsung. It's a lot of money and it'd be good to hear some firsthand experience before I drop a grand on a TV.
A side question would be, the 26, 32, and 37" TVs all have a resolution of 1366x768. At what size does the TV have to blow up the image to fit the screen (which would lower the quality of the image)?
This might not be a good question for a FCP forum, and if so just ignore me. But any thoughts would be helpful.
    jesse.

While I agree that you don't want to rely solely on a consumer LCD TV for any critical evaluation in terms of color/contrast, etc, I do like to see what my output will look like on a typical client owned TV. So here's my setup:
FCP output via Firewire to Sony DSR20 VTR. Analog (S-VHS) out from DSR-20 to an S-VHS distribution amp. S-VHS loop through from the distribution amp goes to a 13" professional color NTSC monitor. First distribution amp output (S-VHS) goes to a Samsung consumer 32" LCD TV. The composite video out of the DSR-20 goes to a 9" professional NTSC monitor which I keep in color-off mode for brightness/contrast evaluation.
The remaining distribution amp outputs go to an old VHS dub rack that I've been meaning to disassemble (someday when I have time), and to a couple of stand-alone DVD recorders.
While editing I have all three monitors on and can make the appropriate determinations.
But equally important and often overlooked is how you monitor audio. For that I'd recommend a decent pair of studio reference or near-field monitors connected to the analog audio outputs of your DV device.
