TV on IMac. Tried it?

Hi,
I have been reading around, but not found anything here that deals spesifically with my question. Which is:
Has anyone tried watching tv on the IMac on a regular basis from, say, a distance of 2,5 meters/7,5 feet? You see, I plan to get this to work to save space in my apartment. Will it look bad, that is, bad for a person who is quite used to a terrible 17" normal TV. Will I have to change the resolution on the IMac everytime I want to watch tv, or will full-screen tv (with, I guess, EyeTV), work in standard resolution?
Also, if anyone would be so kind, will the Intel Imac have significant advantages over the G5 when it comes to watching tv with a tuner without hardware encoding, or could I get any of them and expect about the same result?
Thanks for any answer.
iBookG3/700;iPodPhoto30GB   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I also use an EyeTV EZ unit, and had one with the G5 iMac too. The resolution should be a bit better than the "terrible 17" normal TV" you've got there. See, the Mac's monitor has tremendous resolution-capability, and standard TV does not, so you will see everything of the picture, including some imperfections your (or any standard non-HD) TV is too-dull to show.
I watch nearly-all the TV I watch here on the Mac, and all shows that are recorded are done here on the Mac - no VCRs anymore. I am among those grossly dismayed at Apple for still not incorporating DVR capabilities into the Mac. Steve said a bit back he has not seen any union of the Computer and TV succeed, yet Elgato (EyeTV maker) humms right along.
The Intel Macs, versus an immediate-preceeding-Generation G5 iMac, runs EyeTV a bit smoother, but only a bit. EyeTV ran fine on the G5 too. With any current EyeTV EZ purchase, you will get a free copy of their latest EyeTV 2.0 release, which is a substantial step-up from their previous client. That's significant as it costs $50 for anyone else.

Easiest way is to use Migration Assistant application in /Applications/Utilities/ on your computer.
This will migrate all yoru user data from old computer.

If you downloaded it then presumably it downloaded as a compressed file, likely a .dmg file.  If so double click it to mount the dmg as a folder on your desktop.  Open the folder and you will see the files.  Drag the folder to a location of your choice. e.g., Applications).  Then you should be able to execute the application in that folder.
Just to confirm, when you said you "put the software in the iMac", what was the name of the "software" file you copied?

  • IMac tries to start in safe mode but fails.

I have a Mid 2010 iMac running Maverick. I added 16gb of ram to the 4 existing which I have done on many Macs. It started up but after a minute or two it forced restarted on its own. I then tried it a few more times and continued to crash then restart. I started it in safe mode. It nearly loaded completely the safe start then shut down. Any time I now try to start it, it does the same thing, starts in safe mode then fails. I have taken the 16 extra gas of ram out and it still fails to load. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried repairing the disk? I know it seems simple but sometimes this can be the problem.
Hold down Command+R when starting the computer, select repair disk from the menu.
This won't delete any data and may not work but it's worth a try.

  • On startup, imac tries to connect to a network server that doesn't exist.

Since I migrated  my old iMac to the new one, it has been trying to connect to a non-existent "Server at an IP ADDRESS".  Actually, it is trying to find a long defunct network media drive.
This glitch also hangs up the Clean my Mac software.
How do I tell the iMac to NOT try to locate this hardware?
    Cheers

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
If you get the warning as soon as you log in, it's probably caused by one of your login items or a system modification that loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. A common offender is "Adobe Synchronizer," which is a component of some Adobe products.
    Step 2
If there's an icon representing the server in the sidebar of a Finder window, hold down the command key and drag it out.
    Step 3
In the Finder, press the key combination command-K or select
    Go ▹ Go to Server...
from the menu bar. In the upper right corner of the window that opens is a Recent Servers popup menu represented by a clock icon. From that menu, select
    Clear Recent Servers…
    and confirm. Test.
    Step 4
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/PDF Services
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.
    Step 5
    Open the folder
    ~/Library/Preferences
as in Step 3 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)
Log out and back in again, and test.
    Step 6
Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application.
    Try rebuilding the iPhoto library.

  • IMac trying to connect to another iMac

my iMac is trying to connect to my other iMac on my network whenever I login to this imac
how do I turn this off?
    Thanks for any help.

There are many possible causes for this issue, and it may be very hard to resolve without wiping your account clean of everything except documents as a last resort. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you get the alert in the login screen before you log in, stop here and ask for instructions.
    Step 1
If you get the alert as soon as you log in, it's probably caused by one of your login items or by software that otherwise loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. Known offenders are "1Password" and "Adobe Resource Synchronizer."
Test.
    Step 4
Open the Printers & Scanners pane in System Preferences and delete any network devices you no longer use.
    Step 5
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing  command-C:
    ~/Library/PDF Services
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.
    Step 6
    Open the folder
    ~/Library/Preferences
as in Step 5 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)
Log out and back in again, and test.
    Step 7
Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application.
    Try rebuilding the iPhoto library.
    Step 8
Resources such as images or sounds stored on the server may have been added to various applications. Examples would be pictures added to Contacts and custom sounds added to Mail. The range of possibilites here is practically infinite, so I can't be more specific. You might get a hint by launching the Console application and looking for error messages that appear at the same time as the alerts.
    Step 9
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. Start up in safe mode. Test. After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Step 10
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app
Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.
In the Directory Utility window, select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Mounts from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, and/Local/Default from the node menu, if not already selected. On the right is a list of names and values. By default, the list is empty. If it's not empty, post a screenshot of the window and stop here.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 11
Open the following file as you did in the last step:
    /etc/auto_master
It will open in a TextEdit window. The contents should be exactly this:
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master          # Use directory service
    /net               -hosts          -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home               auto_home     -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    /Network/Servers     -fstab
    /-               -static
If there are any other lines in the window, post them. Otherwise, close the window.

  • My iMac tries to connect to old network startup

    Greetings,
When I start up, I receive a message that my computer is trying to connect to the my old iMac, the one that I used with Migration Assistant to transfer files and such. That computer is no longer around, but the new one always searches for it.
I have looked in Startup items, Airport preferences, recent servers in the Connect to Server part of the Finder, and found that there is an icon for "Network Startup" with a ? that I assume is the culprit. However, there is no obvious way to delete or cancel this.
I checked the following discussion threads for answers:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13272616#13272616
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/5317530#5317530
There were many useful suggestions, but so far no luck. There might be more out there, but I have been looking for a while now.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ken

Look in System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options > See if there is a Network Account Server defined.  If so, remove.
Sounds like it's looking for a remote boot option.

  • Imac tries boot and turns off

When I turn on my iMac, a white screen with an Apple logo appears with a rotating circle right below the logo.  After a while, it fails to boot and turns off.  I tried turning the computer on while pressing Command R or Shift Command R P but nothing seems to work.  Pressing those buttons while turning on just makes the computer turn off sooner.  Does anyone have any suggestion?

    Hello DESOMBRE,
It seems you cannot successfully boot up your Mac or enter recovery mode. Based on the information you have provided, it appears your iMac needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

  • Noisy imac, tried SMC

My Imac has recently started making a loud fan noise, its only 15 months old and i haven't battered it.
read a few articles and tried both SMC and PRAM but its not helped still exactly the same ??
guessing its a back to the shop job, but just wanted to double check first.

    /hansen,
If it's really noisy, you may well have an iMac that has a problem. Some do and get them fixed. Some don't and still try to get them fixed. I'm not sure that there's room inside for any sound deadening material, so that they're as quiet as they are is pretty cool.
I must say that all of my iMacs are "dead silent" - when they're shut down or asleep:))
When some use the dead silent description, I think they're trying to make a point by overemphasizing just a little. You shouldn't take them seriously, as some are simply making a comparison to their previous computer experiences. Some may not hear as well as others, while some may have overly sensitive hearing. Some claim to hear a hum, or a buzz, or a whirr, or a chirp - say it's one fan, or the fans, or the hard drive, or it's electrical in nature. It's just not possible for us to be able to relate exactly what we hear or don't hear if we don't measure to quantify the sound.
There are fixes - SMC resets, PRAM reset, adding RAM, software updates. There's one thing I know for sure - triple the size, fill it with sound deadening material, and raise the price, and the iMac will be dead silent all right. Best of luck.

  • I can't start my imac tried everything in the manual please help

imac won't start tried everything in the manual could it be my power cord?

Hi i've had a similar problem with my iMac.
I bought it from the apple store yesterday so im guessing its the new 2011 model and it was the one retailed at £999.
I used the apple software update and it downloaded a mac update in which required a reboot. It begun to reboot and it played the boot up noise but the screen didnt turn on and it has been like it for well over an hour now and I don't really know what to do.
I tried a few things on the support forum such as to try and boot from the disc but nothing seems to work.

  • Just purchased Mountain Lion and now realized it wont work on my 2008 iMac, tried to start a chat but Apple support chat says my serial

I also tried to see if I could buy memory but find thatI cant even do that with this relic?

    Those models will support:
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
They should be upgradeable to Mavericks as well as Mountain Lion.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • On wake up, my iMac tries to set up a computer-to-computer network

I have a 2006 Intel-based iMac. I use it on a wireless network in my home.
When it wakes from sleep, it looks for a computer-to-computer network that has the same name as my wireless network. Needless to say, it doesn't find it and I have to manually get back on my wireless network.
I have cleared and reset all of the network settings, but to no avail. I suspect it has some rogue setting that it keeps returning to.
Do you know how I can get rid of this problem? I am tempted to trash the Network folder in my preferences, but am unsure if that would cause me other problems.
Thanks for any help in advance.
    Geof

the problem seems to be from the user logout being less time than the energy save time.
Go into system preferences to fix the issue.
    good luck!!!!!

  • IMac tries but fails to eject cd

if I eject it makes all the right noises but fails to eject and just reloads the cd instead.  any suggestions?  Its a 2010 iMac 21"
    cheers

also check out Kappy's user tip:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following: /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above.
To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • I just bought an iMac, trying to transfer from my ibook pre intel 10.5.8 - how can i access my excel, word and other old apps?

I bought a new IMac and a new TIme Capsule. The old compter - pre Intel Ibook running 10.5.8 is in the process of backing up. I transfered my apps and find I cannot acces any of my MS Office data, or my Quicken. Lots of stuff I really need there. Gotta be a way to use my old apps, all this data can't just be gone. HELP!

all this data can't just be gone
The data should be fine. But you will need to upgrade the Apps to open the files. For example, MS Office 2004 does not run in the newer OS. You will need to upgrade to MS Office 2008, or later version. The new version will open the older files.
This is true for many Apps. This site has a compatibility table:

this is the student & teacher design & web premium bundle, I have registered the product with adobe before attempting install, followed their instructions but no luck - Adobe help is useless.

    jimspringgs,
This is an iMac forum, you should be in touch with Adobe, I know you are frustrated with them but it's their product and they know best how to support it.  Therefore you need to be a little persistent and insist on help. You can also Google for forums that support that product, that is where the experts on it will be.

  • Intel iMac trying to die a death

A few of days ago my iMac began to go into the rainbow wheel for any command i gave it, taking up to three minutes to even open a folder.
Then the next day after leaving it to sit overnight, it stopped doing that and everything ran suspiciously fine. The next day, it crashed delivering the "please force a restart" screen in the middle of use completely out of the blue. Since then it has been doing the same thing straight after startup, it gets as far as loading the wallpaper, see here: http://imgur.com/nwIvP.jpg
very worried about it, wondering if anyone has any idea what might be happening?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sorry to hear about the problem, while I can't read the message on the screen you provided it appears to be a Kernel Panic. KP's can be caused by numerous things including RAM that has failed, hard disc failure or even insufficient RAM or HD space. Mac's need between 10-15% of the disk space available so the first thing I'm going to ask is how large is your internal HD and how much available space does it have? Next, please let us know exactly what iMac you have and how it's configured.
I've included and excellent article article for you to begin doing your own troubleshooting. I'd suggest reading it over and seeing where it leads you.
Also please look over this letterand see if this is the message you got.
