First, if you mean letterbox then ther are bars left, right, above and below. Bars left and right only is old standard def 4:3 aspect ratio as opposed to 16:9 HD.
The reason that any show sent by the local is letterboxed (as I defined above) is because the network has decided to send the picture in 16:9 on a standard definition channel. FOX started doing this for sports starting with last year's NFL season, ESPN has done it for all their standard def channels, as well as many of the other SD channels (including most prime time networks, BBC America, and many others).
This allows someone watching on an SD channel on an HD set to use zoom which does not cause the distortion that stretch cases if the image were 4:3 and still have a full screen image on a 16:9 set. Hope that explains it.

Desktop Pictures: "Change Pictures" in System Prefs no longer works.

I used to have my Desktop pictures change every five minutes using a special folder of photos. This function no longer works. The setting appears to be in effect according to the System Preferences Desktop Pictures Pane but the function appears to be broken in 10.4.5. I have trashed the Destop Pictures Preferences file in the Preferences Folder, but it still will not work.
Can anyone using Tiger 10.4.5 get this to work?

OK, that was really dumb!
The reason for the problem became abundantly clear when I quit Pathfinder. Suddenly the picture change became functional again.
So, I guess Pathfinder will not follow the Finder when it comes to settings like this.

Desktop Picture Changes to Solid Blue Automatically

I have never seen this problem. I have had one of Apple's standard black and white pictures as my desktop for years. All of a sudden (don't recall any changes to system) my desktop is solid "Apple" blue. If I change it to anything else it reverts back to the solid blue within a few minutes. I tried opening the console and viewing all messages to see if I could get a clue to what system call might be change it but I saw no messages occur as I observed the desktop picture being changed.
Can anyone tell me how I might track down what is changing my desktop picture?

I tried it and it didn't work. My desktop picture changed almost immediately after logging in. but it did lead to the solution. I noticed that the desktop picture changed at the same time as Entourage Alert's launched (this was turned on the same day that the problem started. So I turned off Entourage Alerts and logged in and out. The desktop picture has remained as selected.
I'm not interested in running Entourage so I don't care about the bug.

I will create an "swf" file that actually has better compatibility than QT if one's not using an Iphone or Ipad.

Frequency of desktop picture change

I have lots of photos I use as desktop pictures. I like my Mac set up so the desktop picture changes frequently, like a continual slide show. However, five seconds is too short and one minute is too long. Is there a way to "hack" the system preference so that I can set the change frequency for say, 15 seconds or 30 seconds?

The relevant key section is at the top of my file. Did you already have a value set for the slideshow? Apparently the key is created when you first run the background slideshow. So, you might first set it and run a 30 second slideshow, then open the file and look for the key value.

Why does my user account picture change to my contact picture at login?

I have my contact information in the address book with a photo of me. Then I have my account user picture a different picture. After waking the computer after sleep or screensaver the login dialogue box picture changes to the one I have set up for my contact info. It's annoying.

You are correct - it is very annoying! I haven't found a way to disable that yet - other than by deleting the picture in the Address Book.
Give Apple some feedback!

AUDIO JUMP AS PICTURE CHANGES

I have burned several dvd's using iDVD 5 and they all run fine on my dvd player and TV.
However I have done a couple for others and while they run perfectly well on my set up on three other dvd players and TV's the audio jumps every time the picture changes.
Has anyone any idea if there is something I can do to sort this problem.

Login picture changed

On the start up screen my login picture changed, all on it's own!!! I've had a lot of the spinning wheel of
death, could this be part of the problem. I tried to do a safe mode start up but you have to hold down the
Shift Key when you hear the start up tone...I have no tone : (
Any thoughts ideas, my Apple Care expired less than 30 days ago (of course) and they won't let me
purchase it again...grrrr.

Restart the computer and hold down the Command and R keys. Forget the tone. When you get to the Recovery partition, run Disk Utility and choose Repair Disk. See if that runs successfully or comes back with problems.

Messages picture change won't stay

I have changed my picture in the Messages program on my Mac three times, but when I quit from Messages and restart it the picture reverts back to my Login picture.
So I changed my my picture in my login account (and it sticks) but when I start Messages back up my old login picture is still there. And after I change my Messages picture again, it still doesn't stick when I shutdown Messages and start it back up again.
What do I need to do to make the 'picture change' in Messages STAY changed?

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.

Music pauses when picture changes

I have made a picture iDVD and everything has gone just fine with it until I put it in my DVD player to watch on the TV. When I go to a slide show the music pauses between picture change. It is driving me crazy. What do I need to do to fix this?
Also the picture quality isn't very good once it is burned a viewed. All of the pictures are taken from a 12.5 meg camera. Is there a way to fix this also?

Hi, I had the same problem. Now, I know you said not to reply if I was gonna say that the headphones are in correctly; but I had the same problem and it worked. Push them in as far as they go! It works! You may have thought you tried that (I did too),but one day I was ****** that it didn't work, and I pushed them in as hard as they could, and now when it goes into the black screen mode, the music keeps playing, I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you, but it worked for me and all my friends. Issue with pictures changing from light to dark

This is hard to explain,
I finish editing my pictures, save as PSD and a 2nd as jpeg.
i view the picture in windows live gallery (windows 7 64bit) and it has changed to a dark deep contrast.
I open the jpeg or the PSD file and they both appear as i originally saved them until I select/ click on it. and i get the darker deep contrasted image.
I have tried to have Photoshop elements 9, in preferences set to windows color and I tried it at Adobe no difference.
Jpegs are saved as sRGB but it is affecting all images, fine while editing but when saved and reviewed it changes and when opened i get to different contrasting views of the same image when selected. This is really anoying me as you think your done and it looks completely different when you review it. HELP!!
please keep your helpful comments to a basic understandable level.

I always recommend sticking with sRGB from the point of shooting photos, through editing and printing. It’s pretty universal and if you keep your workflow settings as sRGB it will avoid profile conflicts.
Start with the elements editor and check your workspace settings by clicking:
Edit >> Color Settings
Click image to enlarge.
Then click on the Windows Start button and type Color Management and press return.
Check all of your settings are consistent.
Finally check your profiles when saving files in the Editor.
If you keep everything consistent you should have no problems.

Handling of pictures changed? Item values not properly updated in Beta 3?

I had created an application which allows to upload an image for a row, basically based on what's done in the demo app for the products table.
Today, I exported the app and then uninstalled Beta 2 and installed Beta 3. Installation finished without any problems - so far so good, but after I recreated my tables etc. and then imported the application, the image handling just didn't work any more...
I took a look at the demo app in Beta 3 and saw that unlike before, it looks like the blob content is no longer being inserted into the DEMO_IMAGES table, but instead remains in wwv_flow_files (now called htmldb_application_files?). This feels wrong somehow, IMO the former approach moving the file content into the custom table was much safer and cleaner.
Also, I noticed when I open an edit page from a report link and look at the session state then, the page item values don't get updated properly (in fact nothing gets updated except for the PK value I clicked on the report page) - this feels totally wrong as well (and I suspect some kind of coincidence here why the picture upload or display doesn't work any more like before)...strange enough, the items on the page show the expected values, but in session state display they are all empty (R).
Is it intended to leave it this way? Why did it have to be changed at all?

You are witnessing a couple things here.
One - for Production XE, the configuration of the Database Access Descriptor for the embedded PL/SQL Gateway makes use of the request-validation-function. This is a function which validates the procedures being invoked from the URL. Out of the box, only those suitable for running XE are enabled. Otherwise, any publicly executable procedure in the database could be invoked directly from the URL, and for security reasons, this needed to be locked down. Search for "Restricting Access to Oracle Database XE" in the online help and you'll see instructions how to open up this validation function for your custom procedures which are invoked directly from the URL.
Two - you are correct, the Demonstration Application was modified to use the global upload table instead of the custom upload table in your schema. Given the security decision (mentioned above), it was a choice between not locking down the procedures which could be invoked from the URL, or providing a demonstration application which would work for all customers out of the box. Obviously, we chose the latter. From a security standpoint, I highly recommend you to use your own table as you were before.
As far as your comments about session state and the report link, nothing has changed in this regard. This is consistent and expected behavior. I confirmed this is consistent with HTML DB 2.0 and XE Beta. Scott discussed this on the OTN Application Express forum in a number of places, including here: Re: Automated Row Fetch, when does the value hit the session state?
