TV Recommendation For Bright Living Room

Despite my wife's displeasure with my pursuit of another television, I need a recommendation for one 65" or larger that would work for my living room that has several windows.  The 65" Panasonic Plasma I currently have works great during hours of darkness, but during the day all I see are reflections.  I plan on moving that one into my bedroom.  Any thoughts?

I have a 46" Sony LED TV located in my bright living room. There are many windows on 2 opposite walls that face NE and SW, with lots of sunlight. But the light never reflects on the screen. Even at night, when the overhead light is on in the nearby dining room. That light doesn't reflect in the screen, or have any type of negative impact on the picture.
I previously had an old Tube Type Sony TV in the same location. Which was not worth watching during daylight hours because of too much light being reflected on the screen.
For a bright room. LED is probably your best bet.
Good Luck

  • New Mini for the living room

Ive been seriously considering buying another Mini for my living room. I have a spare LCD, and I have a new Pro keyboard and mighty mouse on the way so my current mouse and keyboard can be reused for the new system. Basically I'm looking at getting a similar Mini to what i have now just with wireless so I can setup a network. I haven't done that before, seeing the network interface in OSX it doesnt seem too tough to setup. Anything else I should consider? Should I just wait for the intel stuff to come out? I think even if the intel stuff comes out soon I would probably just buy the same thing hoping there is some kind of closeout sale, because my current Mini has been great to me so far and Im just looking for something stable for browsing and productivity stuff.

    BBlades-
My mantra is basically buy what you want when you need it. No matter what you buy today, then "next best thing" is always right around the corner waiting. Those intel babies may be right around the corner, and then again, they might not.
I recently purchased a refurbished mini to use in my Living Room for the same purposes as you described. It has been on 24/7 for over a month and has had absolutely no problems.
It does take a bit of work to set up wireless. If you use the Apple Airport products the process is even easier. You can always find a trmendous amount of help in these discussion boards.
    Good Luck!

  • Needing Sound Recommendations for a New Living Room TV

I am in need of some solid TV recommendations for my living.  I currently have a 65" Plasma that the sun coming through the windows destroys the picture.  I guess I needed to do more homework before I made the purchase.  I love the TV so despite my wife being totally against it, I am going to put it in my bedroom.
With that being said, is there a television (60" or larger) that anyone can recommend that works perfectly in those conditions?  I know it would be cheaper to buy drapes, but I want to do it right this time.  Any recommendations would be much appreciated.  I have about three months before I return from my deployment to make a decision.  Time is definitely on my side.  Thanks

Might not be a bad idea to have a consultation done. My go to TV for rooms with a lot of lighting is LGs. They're really improved the past few years and prefer them over sharp. I would mainly stay away from Samsung. Even though they're awesome TV's, they tend to put a glossy finish on them. I also love Panasonic plamas, but plasmas have a glass screen which produces glare.
I am a Home Theater Geek Squad Installer. I know my stuff and love to give advice, but don't hold me responsible when you screw something up because you decided to do it yourself instead of having a professional do it.

  • 3D or smart TV, which one would be best for living room?

This time I have planned to upgrade my 5 years old Vizio TV to any 2012 smart TV. I want a good looking display screen for my living room, price isn’t the issue for me though, TV design and picture quality are. I am debating between 3d or smart TV from LG, Samsung and Vizio but, all the other options would be welcome as well.

CNET also noted the best in "features" (this would largely weight in "smart" options) as the Samsung ES series being 1st place then the LGs noted above by Dval coming in a close second.
Rwillen is correct also as plasmas own the PQ market. 3 or 4 of this years model got a "10" by cnet and I think the closest LEDs were Elite and XBR at an 8 ( I think) with the LGs coming in at "7" or lower.
So the question is more of what you weight your opinion on. Obviously it's going to be give and take, just read reviews and judge for yourself what is the important factors are as each person is different.

  • A mission: Living Room Gaming PC with Arch

Hey all!  I got the Wii for Christmas!  And boy, am I sick and tired of paying $5-$10 for ever single classic NES/SNES/Genesis game, since I've already bought them all ten years ago.
So, I had a great idea:  using Arch for a living room gaming platform.  I've got an old 1.0ghz pentium three box that would be perfect for the task.  I also have an extra video card with s-out to use to give composite out to the TV.  I'll need to buy adapters for s-video to composite conversion and headphone jack to composite.
I'm also going to buy a USB wifi card and a Bluetooth adapter.  The wifi card will be for updating arch and internet access, and the Bluetooth adapter will be for the Wiimote.  I'd like to use the wiimote for nes and genesis games.
I'll let you know how my experience goes, and maybe post some code if I end up writing anything!

If you get the desktop looking good on your tv, can you post your system and tv specs? I currently use my computer to play dvds on my tv because I am too cheap to buy a dvd player and my surround sound does not have digital decoding. So I use my computer to handle it. It looks okay while playing dvds (only the display looks slightly to the left on the tv screen), but the tv display looks like crap while on the desktop.
    Thanks in advance.
    P.S.
I have only tried this in windows. I am going to try in linux when I get time.

  • How do I play a video on a still image - for example - a video playing on a TV screen in a still living room image?

    Hi All,
I am just starting to work with video and image and have a question - probably something quite easy but I can't seem to find any tutorials to show me how.
Basically I want to have a video playing on a still image - for example a tv screen in a living room.
I am currently struggling to find out how to resize the video to the exact angle of the screen. I can get it playing but at the dimensions of the original video but can't seem to find out how to adjust the video to be sized at the angle the tv is sat at?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Andy

An Opacity Mask plus Corner Pin is what I would use.
I like when an "insert" comes from behind the matte... and also ....this way allows feathering of the edges.

  • I lecture for a living. My old G4 connected to LCD projector worked great.  My new MacBookPro connected to LCD projector - the displayed images look as if I used "pastel colors" instead of bright colors.  Help !

I lecture for a living. My old G4 connected to LCD projector worked great; image displayed on computer monitor is same as that projected by LCD. However my new MacBookPro connected to the LCD projector displays washed out images, as if I designed my Keynote lecture using pastel colors. Also my black & white x-ray images are blue & white. Help !

Thank you for your quick response to my question.  The Apple Genius Bar tried adjusting the color settings in my MacBookPro, as stated in the document you attached.  It did not help ... my Keynote lectures are still pastel, and my x-rays are blue & white. I should have stated this in my original query for help.
    Again, many thanks for responding.
Did the Apple Genius explain to you why it did not work or even if it's possible?

  • I keep getting "incorrect password " when I try to access my living room wifi ...

Every time I try to access wifi in my living room I get a "incorrect password " on my ipad ...When I access wifi in my room , I have no problem .. I also have an iOS touch which it connects to living room wifi with no problem ... I've checked password , turned off and on wifi , reset to factory settings my ipad and nothing ...

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • What would you recommend for this setup?

I just recently found Arch, and I love it so much I want to use it more.
I have been working on converting my media center pc's to Linux, and want some advice before moving forward. Here is what I have:
Living room  (Main Media Center, 6 TB of storage, PS3)
    Bedroom 1 (Media Center, Wii)
Bedroom 2 (Media Center, Xbox 360)
    Bedroom 3 (Media Center)
    Kitchen (Media Center)
I don't think the gaming systems matter, but wanted you to have the full picture.
What I would like to do is have a setup where the Living Room Media Center could be a media server for the other rooms, and also handle media for the TV it is connected to. Most of the movies we have are of two different formats:
    VIDEO_TS folders for standard dvd's
    MKV for HD movies
Is this type of setup possible with Arch, or should I use a Distro like XBMC completely?

I've been using several DLNA-servers on Arch for two years now. I started out with coherence (lacks transcoding support), fuppes (lacked surround sound support), mediatomb (no srt subtitles AND surround sound together), and now I'm using pms(-svn) that does all I've ever needed.
1 small problem: since an update several weeks ago, libmediainfo is not working together anymore with pms: pms crashes on indexing with libmediainfo and sometimes on playing a movie file. On the PMS forums, there is one other user complaining about the same problem, but that's about it.
That's why I recently installed minidlna and I'm very impressed by this little program, but it doesn't play MKV or FLAC iirc. For now I've settled on PMS without libmediainfo, which means from time to time, a movie isn't played in 5.1 (whenever a movie file has two audio streams, the first one is played instead of choosing the 6 channel audio as default).
Anyway: I'd recommend a dlna-server on arch anytime. The protocol is getting more and more support - even TV's are sold with good dlna-support out of the box... If all goes well, my new house will be ready next summer and it will be dlna-powered all the way.

  • How do I select which bluetooth speakers to play out of? My iPod connects to both kitchen and living room speakers. My old iPod had a selection icon on the now playing screen, but my new one doesn't.

    Hi,
    Our setup
A new iPod Touch 5 with iOS 8.3.
Living room speakers that use a Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter.
Kitchen speakers that use an AmazonBasics Bluetooth 4.0 Audio Receiver.
The iPod connects to both but always wants to play to the kitchen. To play in the living room, we have to unplug the power to the kitchen speakers. Bluetooth settings screen doesn't let you select between Bluetooth connections. All I seem to be able to do is forget the connection.
We also have an old iPod Touch (not sure of the generation, but it has iOS 6.1.6). On that one, there is a little icon on the now playing screen that would open a little pull-down menu to let you select which Bluetooth connection to use for playing audio.
I don't see the "select output" icon on the new now playing screen
    Jimmy
PS the iPod seems very aggressive in connecting. I hear the living room speakers activate when my wife gets out of the car in the driveway. Then as she comes into the living room, the sound switches to the kitchen.

Thanks, this was the clue I needed to figure it out.
From Settings you can pull up Control Center.
In Control Center you can enable "Access from within Apps" (also "Access from Lockscreen")
Now when I'm playing music, I can swipe up from the bottom and a little control center window slides up. Neat - this is new since my old iPod. On this window, the name of the current Bluetooth connection appears. Tap on that, and a list of connected Bluetooth items appears. I just tap on the one I want to connect to and I am now playing through the speakers I want.

  • Need help configuring Cisco/Linksys wireless router to extend wi-fi signal to living room

My U-verse wireless gateway is in the back of our house. We live in an old 1920's home with solid wood walls. For our macbooks, we get a pretty decent signal, but my wife's iPad 2 get's poor wi-fi speeds. I bought a Cisco/Linksys WRT160N wireless N broadband router. I have a wired connection in my living room (going to a 4 port switch) then connected to my DVR. I tried hooking up the new router but ended up getting no signal on the iPad. In fact, it caused other issues. I ended up disconnecting it and re-booting my gateway. All came back fine. This wireless router replaces a similar unit that went out in after a power failure, so I know this can be done, but I forget exactly how I confiured the old one. I would like it to "extend" my signal to the living room, but I am also willing to create a new network (different SSID). Do I need to turn of DHCP? Are there any web sites that can assist me in configuring the router? I wish I didn't have to deal with this. The signal from the RG is great when you are in the back room (20+ down). But my wife gets about 3 down on her iPad in the living room. Thanks in advance.

    Hi ,
I was doing some research on how this can be done. It does not appear there is an option in the Cisco router to set it up as an access point, but there are several options you can do to extend your network.
The first thing you can do is just set it up as a router behind router setup, and you will just have two separate networks. Make sure the DHCP pool does not conflict with the U-verse's gateway of 192.168.1.x.
The second thing you can do is connect the Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on your Cisco router instead of using the internet port. This should make it work like a smart switch.
With both setups, you want to probably change the SSID, network key, and wireless security settings to the same thing for wireless roaming abilities. That way, anyone that configures their wireless connection will be connected to both networks. Just make sure the wireless channels are not the same, and I would suggest having them at least 5 apart.
    Hope this helps.

  • SX20 and SX10 best practices for small conference rooms using built in Display Speakers

    Hi,
Im planning to deploy some small meeting rooms using SX10 and SX20 codecs, I was wondering if someone could give me some key points to consider:
    1. Display recommendation, nice built in speakers, low delay (goog performance with codec echo canceller) I wish to use a 60 - 70 inch Led TV (not yet defined which brand and model)  I would like to receive some feedback about nice performance displays with nice audio and echo cancellation performance based on your experience.
    2. What would be the drawbacks of using SX10 and SX20 in larger meeting rooms maybe 10 or 12 people?
    3. When to use external microphone? or when is recommended to use only  internal microphone?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best Regards,  have a nice day!

Pretty well any modern display should work well - different people are going to have different ideas about whether the speakers are any good or not, so you'll have to listen to a few yourself and make up your mid what you think is "better".  The echo cancellation can be tweaked manually on the codec to suit the display if required (rather than leaving it on the "auto" setting which, in our installations, has caused more troubles than it's worth).
The main drawback of using the SX10, or the cheaper of the range of the SX20s, is the camera and the amount of zoom.  In a larger room, you're not going to get a good close up view with a 2.5x camera.  I'd suggest for a bigger room, you look at the 12x cameras.
As a general rule - use additional microphone(s) when you can't get someone within a 3m radius one of the other microphones.  So in a larger room, you may need many.

These network ports are used by Apple TV for communications on your network.
TCP port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server.
TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.
UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.
TCP port 80 is used for communicating with podcast servers.
TCP port 80 and 443 are used for basic and secure communications with the iTunes Store via the Internet.
TCP port 53 is used for regular DNS.
These are well-known ports used by Apple products, like iTunes. If you can use all the features of iTunes, these ports are likely already open on your firewall or NAT router. Note: These ports may also used by other services such as YouTube and Flickr.

When the Apple TV is paired with a remote, it means only that remote can control it, when it's not paired any remote can control it. You will need a remote for each of your devices.

  • "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "Living Room Apple TV". An unknown error occurred (406)."

This error message keeps popping up overtime I try to play an iTunes bought tv show from my mac book pro to my apple tv "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “Living Room Apple TV”. An unknown error occurred (406)."
Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it. Both devices are registered on the same apple id and password. This problem just started happening within the last week or so but prior to that everything was working as it should have. In fact since the launch of icloud things have been glitchy for me with purchasing and playing off the apple tv as well.
    Can someone please help?'
    Thanks

Unfortunately Apple's error codes are very much a mystery (at least to me), try restarting the Apple TV, iPad and router. If that doesn't help look into whether you might be encountering interference on your network.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.
