TWAIN woes in Image Capture

The help system for Image Capture says I can set additional scanner options by going to Browse Devices, where under TWAIN devices I should select my scanner (an Epson Perfection 3200 Photo), select Use TWAIN UI and then click Connect. But the Device Browser shows no TWAIN devices setting, although it does list my scanner under Local Devices. There's no "Use TWAIN UI" option. I've downloaded and installed the latest TWAIN software from Epson (epson11928twain_driver_and_epson_scan_utility277a), so in theory it should show up. Please help!

Thank you very much for all your effort.  I guess I'll have to go over to the Apple store since my support contract has expired.  I did get it to list the proper destination folder but it never arrives there.  For the past few iterations Image Capture did function as I think it should.  The three buttons at the bottom were all black and I could scan after the Overview scan ran automatically.  That did not cure the problem, however.  Previously the Scan button was greyed out as were all the fields in the right hand panel.  In any event, I'll try the Apple store.  Again, thanks.

  • Image Capture, twain sane interface, and Snow Leopard compatibility?

I have downloaded and installed Mattius Ellert's twain sane interface in order to be able to use an old scanner. In order to use it with Image Capture, Ellert's FAQ page describes a procedure for selecting the twain sane interface GUI over the native GUI. However this procedure fails in Snow Leopard; I seem to have no choice but to run the native GUI, with extremely limited functionality. The twain sane interface GUI is still there and still works; it is what comes up if I scan from Microsoft Word or Graphic Convertor. But I would like it to work with Image Capture and related Apple software (preview and the print/fax control panel). Does anyone know of a procedure to do so?
Also does anyone know where this GUI actually lives on the computer? I examined the installed file locations specified in twain-sane interface's bom file, and just found a bunch of .strings and plist files in Image Capture/TWAIN Data Source/Sane.ds/Contents/Resources, plus one file under ....Sne.ds/Contents/MacOS called SANE.

    Ronald,
The reason you are not seeing this device in Image Capture after installing the TWAIN/SANE stuff is because Apple removed the TWAIN interfaces from Image Capture in Snow Leopard. TWAIN is being deprecated on the Mac. What someone needs to do is develop an ICA/SANE bridge and then Image Capture would work again.
    Just trying to help.

  • Image capture won't connect to Brother  Twain scanning

    Hello
Hope someone can help me. I have just connected a Brother MFC-7860DW all in one printer scanner to my Mac wirelessly. Everything works perfectly except the scanning. Image capture will show the Brother in the device browser window, I click on Twain uni but can see no Connect click button. Just opening Image Capture "no device connected" If I go in to Print and Scan box there is no "scan" button at the top right corner as decribed in the manual.  I have downloded Twain in case my software was not up to date. Nothing happens from the printer buttons end. Seems the Mac can talk to the printer but not Twain Scanner. It seems tantalisingly close. Is there a magic completion?

You installed the Brother image driver package, which includes the Brother ControlCenter software to manage scanning? It's this: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us_ot/en/dlf/dlf/000000/00450 0/dlf004555.html?reg=us&c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=mfc7860dw_all&type2=1&os=81&flang=4 &dlid=dlf004555

  • Mustek Scanner - TWAIN - Image Capture

    I have a new +Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB 1200dpi Pro+ Scanner.
I used to be able to use the Import menu in Photoshop CS4 to access this scanner via the TWAIN interface.
However, +PhotoShop CS4+ includes a ReadMe which says that using TWAIN is not recommended. Since updating to 10.5.7, the TWAIN option no longer appears in the PhotoShop Import Menu. It did appear in +PS CS4+ under 10.5.6.
Okay, never mind; import scans in another application.
The obvious thing is to check +Image Capture.+
Unfortunately, +Image Capture+ says there is no device connected, & searching doesn't reveal one, despite scanner driver re-installs & restarts. (Please don't mention the Mustek website. See for yourself if you're curious!)
Checked the +USB Device Tree;+ it says there is a USB2.0 Scanner on the USB High-Speed Bus. It thinks it is a Hewlett-Packard, which could conceivably be quite correct.
So the scanner is connected, but neither Image Capture nor PhotoShop can see it…
    Any suggestions?

You useless lot — we wouldn't leave a simple question such as this unanswered for five whole days over in the Logic Forums!
There were lots of possible workarounds, including SANE (which is just +so easy+ to install correctly — not!) & various 3rd-party scanning applications.
The applications couldn't find a scanner; so much for their built-in libraries.
In the end, I found my own constant advice to others was the best:
+"Visit the manufacturer's website to see if there are any known issues or bug reports, & if appropriate, download the latest version that is definitely compatible with your setup."+
True, I asked not to be told to visit their site, but this is a typical poster's 'trick question'… which is to say, don't take anything the OP says at face value! (It wasn't a deliberate trick, of course; the site has been re-vamped now, & works much better than it did.)
So — someone could have picked up a nice green star for practically no trouble if they'd just told me to pull my socks up.
But — *no stars for you!*
Anyway, for anyone reading this post & wondering what happened, the new downloaded driver enabled +Image Capture+ to see the Scanner via the TWAIN interface. And they all lived happily ever after (until the next upgrade, of course).

  • Image Capture downloads pictures and creates .aae file

Using Image Capture 6.6 to download pictures from my iPhone 5S to Macbook Air w/ OSX Yosemite.
When I go to the folder where I download the files on my computer, it shows a .JPG file and an .AAE file.
I cannot find preferences for Image Capture to turn the additional download off.
It is doubling file size storage on my computer as each picture has a .JPG @ 600KB and an .AAE @ 600K
I have bulk deleted the .AAE files using Spotlight and searching the file type, but do not wish to continue doing this if there is way to turn this off.

Using a properties file works for other parameters (jdbc data source, logging, file name for the image), but kind of drawing a >blank on the data source for the camera. This is why I'm reluctant to upgrade software (imaginee frowney emoticon here; for those who still doubt wait until the next OTN site upgrade for another example). Stuff sometimes doesn't work any more when you do (imagine another frowny emoticon)
Until a better idea comes along use a card-reader to put the files into a folder, then load them into Apex as a second step. This is not as conveneint as loading directly from the camera, but if the interface won't work you'll have to do somethiing else.
I don't have immediate access to Apex - can you load off a card-reader instead of the camera by specifying the drive to load the files from?
It sounds like more of a Windows problem than Apex. Have you tried browser searches on Logitech and Twain to see if anyone has encountered similar problems?

  • Preview and image capture don't save imported scanned image

Hi. Both preview and image capture aquire the scanner and displays the image overview. But when proceeding
to scan, the application simply hangs and no image is saved.
Maybe some prefs file is corrupted. Tried removing the com.apple.Preview from ~/Library/Containers, but didn't help....
    What to do???

Not sure if this is relevant:
    1) TWAIN-BRIDGE is installed otherwise mavericks won't talk to the scanner.
    2) recently added an HP printer (no scanner). Shouldn't conflict with the scanner driver, but then again.....

  • Image Capture no longer working with Samsung SCX-4500W

Out of the blue, Image Capture is no longer working with my scanner (Samsung SCX-4500W). Until today, I have had no problems, but now Image Capture will only complete the "overview" but not the "scan" itself. I get the message that the "scanner reported an error." I have tried restarting, unplugging cables, etc. but nothing works. I don't think there is a problem with the scanner itself -- it is able to scan using the built-in "scan to PC" function, but not Image Capture. I am using OS X 10.6.1. Any suggestions?

Try running a repair disk permissions. This is done via the Disk Utility application. Reply if you need help to do this.
Also, do you have another application you can scan with? Note that Preview will use Image Capture, so you need some other application. As a test, you could download Picasa from Google which works well with TWAIN scanners.

  • Image Capture and Preview: bad PDF page size

When scanning to a PDF document with Image Capture, the resulting PDF always has an enormous page size. For example, a 3"x3" image scanned at 300dpi will appear as a 12.5"x12.5" page in the PDF. Scanning at 72dpi will create the appropriate size page, but the file is (of course) unsuitable for printing due to the low resolution. It's as if Image Capture (or the PDF creation routine) assumes the image is 72dpi even if it was scanned higher than that.
Similar behavior can be seen in the Preview app. Use the following steps to reproduce:
    1. Open a decent quality image from a digital camera.
    2. Choose Tools Menu -> Adjust Size...
    3. Be sure both "Scale proportionally" and "Resample image" are selected.
    4. Change the Resolution to 300 pixels/inch, change the Width to 3 inches and click OK.
    5. Choose File Menu -> Save As...
    6. Change the format to PDF, choose a location and file name to your liking, and click Save
    7. Open the new document in Preview and check the page size (Tools Menu -> Inspector)
Inexplicably, the page size is now 12.5 inches wide. I understand what it's doing, but I don't know why. The math is simple. Take the 3x3 inch example above: 3in * 300ppi = 900px / 72ppi = 12.5in
I feel it's very bad form for the software to assume you always work in "screen resolution" (72dpi). The PDFs the software makes is next to useless for archival purposes because of the incorrect size markings.
Anyone know of an alternative application to scan to PDF docs? The scanner's TWAIN software is not an option because it's PPC and won't run under Rosetta. How about an application that creates PDF documents from image files (besides Acrobat)? Best would be a way to fix the behavior or Apple's software.
    Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem long ago. Apple is not doing anything to fix this problem

  • Is it possible to scan without preview/ image capture??

These programs are useless for scanning. Every time I try to scan something it automatically guesses where the image is cropped. It gets it wrong almost every time and there is no way of turning it off.
I tried clicking the more details button but my scanner sends an error message whenever I do. Therefore both Preview and Image Capture are stuck in basic mode. I also tried finding Epson Print/ Scan software and new driver updates by Apple, but no joy there I'm afraid.
I have an Epson DX4400, it works fine - but only with Preview and Image Capture. It won't work with any other programs I know of (such as Photoshop etc). As far as I'm aware there's no TWAIN driver available, so how is it possible to scan without doing it through Preview?
    This *****!

Hi DLThomas & welcome to discussions...
Have you taken a look at VueScan...best out there that I know of - seems to do everything scanning related well - tons of options without the compatibility grief.

  • Image Capture for Epson Scanner producing very dark results

I recently upgraded to a new iMac running Mountain Lion. I have a new Epson Perfection v750 Pro scanner, which I use to scan film negatives. I had previously been working with this scanner on a Windows 7 PC. Using Image Capture, I am getting wildly different results -- the resulting scan is completely dark. Is there a setting that I am missing somewhere?
I've attached a little preview picture that shows the difference between a scan of the same image, with my PC vs my Mac.

There is no Epson scanner utility for Mountain Lion, it appears. Even Epson's FAQ defers to Image Capture and says it only provides software for image modification.
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&info Type=FAQ&oid=207953&foid=214278&cat=214269&subcat=214264
Unfortunately Image Capture completely fails to provide the service it should be expected to. The 3rd party software VueScan seems like it would be adequate once I learned how to manipulate it a little more, but ultimately the only decision I can justify is to hook up the scanner to my Windows PC and use the TWAIN-based scan utility there.
If there's anywhere I can make an official plea to Apple to get Image Capture in a workable state, feel free to point the way.

  • Image Capture, upon opening, always reads "No camera or scanner selected" (and the scanner doesn't scan.  Why?).

"Image Capture" application, upon opening, always reads "No camera or scanner selected."  Scanner does not scan (HP C4680, All-in-one type).  Mine is a Mac OS X (Snow Leopard 10.6.7).  All connections seem fine.  What's wrong?  Am decidedly NOT a "techie" and this is first computer ever owned by enquirer. Thank you.

    Some additional thoughts.
Does the Preferences have the option to open the Scanner window ticked ?
Does the Scanner appear in the Browse Menu when you Browse for Devices ?
My Epson CX6400 which is of some age now does not show Scanner Ablities in th System Profiler for OS X 10.5.8
The Printer part uses the OS X installed Cups + Gutenprint driver.
I have also installed the Epson stuff that came on the CD which I am sure installed a Twain Driver for the scanner part.
It seems this is what the Browse info tells me is being used.
In Hard Drive/Library/Image Capture/Devices the Epson Scanner.app has been added.
In the same Image Capture folder a Twain Data Source folder is also present and the Scanner .ds file is in there.

  • Pentax DSmobile 600 with Image Capture only sayd "No paper loaded..."

I was using Paperless to scan documents, but Paperless is not fully working on Snow Leopard yet. I re-installed the Pentax DSmobile 600 TWAIN driver tonight, but I still cannot scan documents into my Mac.
If I select "Flatbed" as the Scan Mode, I can get it to "Overview" a document quite nicely. But when I tried to scan it it doesn't go well. When I use "Document Feeder" as the Scan Mode, Image Capture just sits there saying "No paper loaded..."
A workaround is to "Hide Details" at which point it seems to start allowing me to scan again.
Is this a bug with Image Capture?
    To reproduce:
    * Open Image Capture
    * Choose Show Details
    * Select "Flatbed" as the scan mode
    * Select "Document Feeder" as the scan mode
    * "No paper loaded..." displays on the screen, Scan button disabled.
    * Click "Hide Details" and you can Scan again.

Does anyone happen to know if there are other SW packages that enable calibration of this scanner? I've already tried (and let expire) Paperless and currently have a brand new but useless dsmobile 600 sitting on my desk - which I ironically chose over other models because of the recommendation by Mariner software for this:

  • Color misregistration scanning with image capture under Leopard 10.5.2

The scanner is an older Epson Perfection 1250 Photo. Under Tiger, Image Capture scans perfectly. Under Leopard (Image Capture 4.0), the RGB channels in the image appear to be misregistered. I downloaded the Leopard compatible TWAIN driver from Epson, and the scan looks OK when using the Epson Scan app. The reason I would like to use Image Capture is that it offers PNG as a format for saving, while the Epson Scan app does not (TIFF is significantly bigger). Anybody noticed this issue?

Move the com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist file out of your home /Library/Preferences/ folder to the Desktop and try again. If that works, delete the moved file, and reset IC's preferences. If not, create a new admin user account, log in, and see if the problem persists. Report back.
