Tweaking sound settings for iMovie HD 6

I just upgraded to the new Intel Core machine and iLife 06. I opened and edited a movie first created in iMovie 5. It upgraded fine and looks fine. When I export to Quicktime (also upgraded to 7 pro) and choose Web Streaming (as I did under iMovie 5), the sound is significantly lower in quality and sounds wavy and full of reverb. I tried to match movie properties from an old movie created with this preset export in iMovie 5 but still could not get the sound right.
Anyone have any tips on how to set Expert Settings to get a similar sized movie (web streaming) but with full quality stereo sound??
Thanks!

  • Best export settings for iMovie?

Anything better than "share to large"?
I've used Share to Large to the media browser with success, but I was hoping for something that might give higher quality, even if that comes at the expense of time and disk space. The "Large" file is highly compressed, and I think most of the quality loss I see overall in going from my DV footage to the final DVD, occurs in the export from iMovie.
I tried an export to QT's Best quality DV file last night, but that looked far worse after encoding. Anything else worth trying?

may I drop in here, as one of the authors of
    http://sites.google.com/site/theimovieoutputproject/
you stumble into 2, 3 probs, using DV, iM09 and creating a DVD:
    • as you can read on the site mentioned above, adding socalled 'bad effects' (e.g. page-curl, animated Titles etc) any interlaced material get 'chopped off' one field .. => vertical resolution in half.
    • no chance to bring that back with any export settings.. this is some internal prob of iM, how it handles i-material..
    • next prob: iM doesn' offer any more the 'Full Quality' option for DV material .. which 'cloned' the timeline of project on export = no quality loss at all. in case, you're using miniDV/DV/Standard source, you can 'force' such an export by using Export With QT/dv-stream .. IF you're just editing, no bad effects..
    • so, no bad effects in use, DV on export .. => a computer can not display the 100% of quality of such a stream! a) you are NOT allowed to watch 'fullscreen', this will zoom the video beyond 100%! b) a computer doesn't handle interlace .. (='jaggies'). and finally, the QTplayer sometimes lack the 'high'flag on playback.. the file has full-quality, the playback not..
    • judge final quality of a DVD ALWAYS on TV..
for usage of miniDV and DVD, follow SDMacs's advice, use iMHD6 or FCE, both 'native' dv-editors.
the workaround mentioned on my site above is - imho - less Mac-like ..
another person abuses this board for advertising here his 'solution', selling a pdf .. = $$
finally, a Developer on my German board inspired me about some 'solution', by hacking a 'flag'/atom in the corresponding video-files.. actually testing that, but you need a socalled moov-editor (moov, not mov), a tool from Apple's Developer Site, I don't know, if it is allowed to put it online .. so, I assume no 'public' solution.. :-/

  • What is Little Endian / Big Endian in Sound settings for Apple Intermediate

    Hi.
In Final Cut Express, I am trying to splice together multiple video clips, combining footage from:
    1) HDV camcorder imported into iMovie 08 as 960 x 540 (the "lower resolution" option from iMovie '08 import), 16-bit @ 48 KHz (Big Endian), 25 FPS
    2) AVI files (DiVX 512 x 384, MP3 at 44.1 KHz, 23.98 FPS)
    3) Canon Camera "movie" files (Apple OpenDML JPEG 640 x 480, 16-bit Little Endian, Mono @ 44.1 KHz, 30 FPS)
    Questions
    1) What is this little endian / big endian thing?
    2) What is the best codec for me to edit in? My targets are NTSC DVD and also a HD version served via iPod connected to HDTV.
I am not sure what codec to convert everything to, so that I can edit without having to RENDER every time I do something. I tried to export using QuickTime Pro to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec but am not sure about the option for "Little Endian" (I am using an Intel Mac; I assume I do NOT use little endian? Can someone help clarify?)
    Many thanks!!!

    1. They're compression formats. Different codec use different compression schemes.
    2. You should convert your material to QuickTime using the appropriate DV codec and frame rate.
None of your material is HD. Some of it is low resolution, lower than even DV. There is no good way to make this material HD.

  • What are the best settings for iMovie to QT 7 so the majority can view?

My current iMovie saved out through version 7 is only viewable by those who have upgraded and frankly most people won't take the time and move on. Are there settings that will enable it to play with older versions before 7?
Can I convert it to WMP?

  • Mail sound settings set to None but still receive notification sound for all new mail

My sound settings for new mail are set to Alert Tones: None, Vibrate Only, but I still receive a sound notification for all new mail.  Why is my phone not recognizing the setting?  I have turned off and back on the phone numerous times hoping that would help, but it has not.  How can I make the phone recognize the settings that I have purposefully set?

    afhammerC,
So I understand: you have friends whose iPhone 4S's do vibrate when mail is received in silent mode, and no sounds are selected for new mail, but vibrate is selected for silent mode?
    Just want to be clear.
My wife has an iPhone 4S 16gb, and it appears she has the same problem as well.
As an aside to the issue, I really wish there was a way to have a timer on the notification center so we could put one, many, or all apps' notfication to sleep during a specific time period (say, during the night).  V. annoying to have to disable notifications separately.  Would love a way to turn them off between, say, midnight at 6am.

  • Multiple Settings for One Monitor

I have my monitor set to the way I like it, it shows colors accurately and not overly bright (white doesn't blind me). However I edit photos for the web in PS and this is great for my screen but I have noticed when looking at other screens my photos will at times looked washed out and not a good presentation. If I manually change my monitor settings to be brighter (and a few other tweaks) I can replicate the look of other monitors close enough to help prevent washed out/blown out photos. Here is the issue, I need to be able to change settings between the two fairly easily. To manually set my monitor for one then back to the other can be time consuming and a pain to set right every time.
I would like to be able to preset certain settings (in software) that I can quickly switch between by pressing hotkeys or clicking shortcut on my desktop. I have an AMD video card and have attempted to use the AMD VISION Engine Control Center to add presets then tweak the settings for each. However when I switch between the presets the settings are the same.
How do I build presets using the VISION Engine Control Center that actually works (maybe I misunderstand what it is saving?) or is there a way to do this in Windows 7 or free software that actually works decently for this purpose?
Note: I post this here as I assume someone here has done this or seen soemthing like this.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Why not to use a event based monitor to detect the Task Schedule running status? I am not familar with VB script, the suggestion I can give is you need to check if the script cannot properly detect the running result of the task Schedule.

  • Why can't I get sound notification for my email anymore?

I am no longer able to get sound notification for send or receive email nor can I get sound notification for incoming phone calls.  What happened and is there a correction?

Before doing anything else, is your ringer switch in silent mode?  I'd try toggling the switch a few times to make sure it's working.  The phone should vibrate when you move the switch from on to silent.  If it doesn't then the switch may be broken.
Next make sure the volume for notifications is not off.  Check the Sound settings for this.  Changing the volume there should also cause your (phone) ringtone to play.  If it doesn't then there is something very wrong.
The only other thing I can suggest if the above doesn't help is doing a hard reset of the phone.  Hold power and home buttons down until screen goes dark and Apple icon appears, then let go.
If that doesn't work, then the only other thing you can try is doing a Backup and then a Restore in iTunes.  If that doesn't work, then there's a hardware problem.

  • My 5s is stuck on one sound notification for mail.

My iPhone 5S will not let me change the sound settings for ring tone/text tone/new mail/etc.  When I go to Settings--Sounds and make choices, they show on the screen, but the old/original sounds are still what the phone emits when in use.  I did update to 8 (or whatever it's called) and things don't work like they used to.  But these sound notifications are my basic problem.  Any suggestions?  Thanks, Ron

Try inserting and removing the headphone jack seven or eight times.

  • Best export settings in iMovie for later import to iDVD

    Hello,
I've created a few iMovie projects that I've put on DVD using the Share To iDVD option.
I have a few different projects that I want to put on one DVD. What are the best export settings in iMovie to create files that I can later import using iDVD?
    Cheers

I would sugest using the Apple defaults - which you will get if you use SHARE/Export Movie.
It is possible to infinitely tweak the parameters by using SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME, but in my experience, you are not likely to visibly improve quality. However, you might be able to get more compression(i.e. a smaller file size) at nearly the same quality.
However, there is no harm in experimenting if you like.
You should use Movie to QuickTime Movie. Click Options. Generally, set the video codec to h.264. If space is not an issue, you can use Apple Intermediate Codec instead, but only if you are going to edit the movie some more. For a final movie, use h.264.
For frame rate, use automatic or 24 frames, but you can use fewer and see if it imporves quality.
For bit rate, you can use up to 20 Mbps, but 16Mbps is the highest I have gone, and that results in a very large file. With h.264, you can get good results with 10 or even lower. (Note: 10 Mbps = 10,000 Kbps)

Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten passcode:
Restore (and reset passcode) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected (or the device was never connected to a computer) you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:
iOS: Unable to update or restore - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 - recovery mode (e.g., cannot connect to computer last used to sync device, iTunes still asks for a password)

  • Which settings for exporting from iMovie '09

I have a couple of projects coming up, and I'll be using a MiniDV camera (Canon XL1S) and a hard drive camera (Canon Vixia HG21).
For final editing I'm using iMovie 6 (still feel the most comfortable with it), but need to use iMovie '09 to import AVCHD footage from the HG21.
What are the best settings to use for exporting that footage out of '09 and into '06? I hate to lose major quality on the HG21, but don't really mind if it looks comparable to the XL1S. These projects are really demanding that I keep it at optimum HD quality (besides, I'm not sure if I have the HD space to work with the biggest files. Also, I don't plan on burn to Blu-ray or anything like that. I'm just needing to burn standard-definition DVDs, and plan on doing that with iDVD.
Basically I looking for advice on the proper quality settings for these needs, and also wondering if I'm looking at any issues regarding the different aspect ratios I'll be dealing with.
    Thanks much…

Many thanks Lennart, and my apologies for a typo earlier when really confused you by leaving out one key word. I meant to say, "These projects are really (not) demanding that I keep it at optimum HD quality…"
I like your idea of pillarboxing the whole project, filling an entire widescreen TV with my Vixio footage. I assume the key is to open my new iMovie '06 project with the "DV Widescreen" setting, right?
Regarding how to convert AVCHD down to SD… I've been experimenting some with iMovie '09 on my intel-MacBook. Please tell me if I can forego the VoltaicHD purchase by doing this:
    - I'm importing my Vixio footage into '09, choosing the "Large - 960x540" setting, just to keep the file size down.
    - I'm then choosing Share>Export Movie, and again, I'm choosing the "Large" radio button.
    - When the movie has exported, I'm seeing that it is saved with a .m4v extension. iMovie '06 will not allow me to drag a .m4v file into the clip pane. However, if I change the extension to .mov, I AM able to drag it in, and it appears that all is working ok.
What do you think? Is this workable? Am I sacrificing something with this method? Though I have not yet ripped anything to DVD, the quality seems good, (for SD standards, anyway).
One other question: Is it possible to export multiple clips out of '09 so that they can be brought into '06 individually? So far, all I'm able to do is to export them as one complete "movie," with all of my raw clips locked together. I'd like to have them separated when they arrive in '06. Maybe this is easy to do, and I just have not figured out this feature in '09.
    Thx again…

  • Ideal iMovie export settings for iPhone?

What is the proper setting for iMovie exports to the iPhone?
Obviously 480x320 is the desired target resolution, but I tried using "Quicktime" and encoding in h.264, but the video is not viewable on the iPhone. Alternatively, in selecting MPEG4, oddly h.264 was greyed out as not an option.
Anyone? I know the "iPod" settings work, but that is not the ideal iPhone screen resolution.
    blakespot

I had the same problem getting iMovies over to my AppleTV and found a solution that works for iPhone too.
In iMovie click: Share>Share...>Quicktime (at top of box)>Expert Settings (under Compress Movie For)>Share (button at bottom of box)>Movie to iPhone (on Export: pick list). Click Save at the bottom of the dialog and you're off!
I used this to convert several of the movies I had on my AppleTV and put them on my iPhone.

  • Best settings for exporting crisp video/graphic from iMovie to YouTube?

Hi, I am working on a video for a client and after viewing on YouTube they had some issues with the type not looking "crisp," and I'm not sure how to fix it, not sure if it's a YouTube thing or something I am doing wrong.
I am working in iMovie 6/HD on OS 10.4.11. I do my "type slides" in Photoshop and import them into the iMovie as photos (JPGs). I know some text/titles can be done in iMovie but there is very little control I have over what goes where, so by making my type slides in Photoshop I have more creative control to do what I want. I have done tests and it doesn't seem to matter what resolution the Photoshop files are when they're imported, the results are always the same.
If anyone has a better suggestion for doing the type slides I'd gladly welcome them, but I think what I really need to know is the following:
What are the best expert settings to export my iMovie file as, so that when I upload to YouTube, the quality stays fairly crisp? Or does YouTube's compression just negate anything I can do on my end?
I have googled and found settings recs on other sites and other boards and tried a bunch of them and my results aren't any better than my original effort.
From another post on this board I discovered I could play with the Filters setting when exporting, and I have set that to Sharpen and also used the Brightness filter to lighten the video (it was a little dark). I uploaded to YouTube and I think it is a little better, but would still love the info if anyone has a guaranteed rec for correct settings for YouTube video from iMovie HD/6.

    Hello Brian,
Have you tried de-interlacing before exporting?
Sometimes, when I'm in a rush, I would expand the Canvas/Viewer (viewed at 100%), pick the clearest frame, and do a screen capture.
For example, with the captured image (in Photoshop), I have a marquee preset at 640x480 (NTSC). I created an action to crop, resize to 720x480, then set the Pixel Aspect Ratio to NTSC.
