Twice as expensive in Australia!!!!!!!!

Right, Photoshop CS5 would cost me $699 if I lived in the US. But as it happens, I live in Australia.
Now, at the moment, 669 dollars in the US is worth about 707.987 dollars in Australia. That's the current rate of exchange, it's what the banks use, it's what companies use, it's what industries use - currency parities are the basis of the world economy.
So far, so good.
But it seems Adobe operates outside the fiscal constraints that bind the rest of the world. I just went to buy Adobe Photoshop CS5 via the Adobe site, and the price shown on the order page is...... Australian $1168............
Now, I don't know how much the postage would cost on a small carboard box containing a tiny plastic disk, but I'm sure it's not going to be anywhere near $460!!!!
So why the price difference? Why do Australian have to pay $400 more than the US for the same product?
Anybody got any ideas about that?

I logged back in to respond.
I happen to think that regardless of the circumstances that Australians are being punished for being in a more remote part of the world and though some of those things I mention probably do play a part in the strange price difference Australians have proven to good loyal customers I know Adobe and Nikon should be aware of this and perhaps give at least a 15% reduction on the cost of their products. Both companies would benefit a great deal and Aussies deserve a better price. Parody would be even better and the product will sell really well.
I went to Australia in January of this year and the one thing everyone told me if they could get their Model Nikon for a price closer to the US they would not think twice about getting it and if Photoshop was also less expensive they would definitely have it. In both cases they were not pros but would not think twice about getting the top of the line they were mostly interested in the Nikon D3 series, no one mentioned Canon and they all said they would go for the extended version of Photoshop but would probably by the Master Collection just to have it.
To me it is crazy to let this market go to waste and almost everyone I talked to wanted top of the line anything that was at the right price.
I am with you one this Adobe and Nikon should do a study on this ti see what I mean.

  • I was wondering if anybody can tell me why the new Apple iPhone 5 is $600 AUD/US more expensive in Australia than the US??? Please explain somebody?

I was wondering if anybody can tell me why the Apple IPhone 5  is $600 US/AUD more expensive in Australia than in the US!
    thanks

Thanks for the reply - I still know that this issue is also relevant for so many other apple products which don't involve cellular providers.... I think Australians are tired of paying so much more for things than in the US and other countries.  It used to be explained by the poor Australian dollar but that doesnt exactly work when we are over parity with the US dollar and have been for a while now....

  • Iphone is very expensive in australia

Does any body know why is iphone very expensive in australia than in US. In US 32 GB iphone cost only 335 australian dollar but for same iphone it cost AU$1040 in australia. I am little bit curious about that so, if someone know about that please reply me.
    thanks

This is a user-to-user tech support forum, so no one here can speak for Apple. However, there are several reasons why prices differ.
    1. The US price you quoted is a carrier subsidized price which requires a 2 year contract with AT&T including an unlimited data plan. The same phone without the contract is $700 (USD).
    2. VAT is not included in the US price. US sales taxes are added to the quoted price on sale
    3. The cost of providing foreign (outside USA) warranty and support is factored in

  • Why is the 5S $220 more expensive in Australia

why is the 5S $220 more expensive in Australia

Exchange rates...Apple is a US based company, & remember, Australia prices include the 10% GST, US prices do not include taxes.

  • Why so expensive in Australia

After taking into account the current exchange rate, and the inclusion of GST.  How come the outright purchase of an Phone 5S 64GB is $200 dearer in Australia than it is in the US.

There are many, many factors involved in how a product is priced in a given country. Exchange rates and local taxes are just one factor. There are labor costs, import duties, costs of shipping, warehousing, distribution, corporate taxes, etc. ext. You're also probably not factoring in the sales taxes charged in the US that are not reflected in the listed prices.
If you have a technical question, by all means post and we'll be glad to try and help. If you want to complain about pricing, though, this isn't the venue, so we'll need to leave it at this point.
    Regards.

  • Why is the iPhone 4S $600 more expensive in Australia compared to the U.S; where is the price disparity justification?

Would someone please expatiate on the price disparity between U.S. and Australian iPhone 4S.

The prices you're seeing advertized in the US are subsidized by the carriers in exchange for a 2 year contract.  Full (non-contracted) prices are similar to thoese in Australia

Firefox is a totally free application, it doesn't charge you anything. If you downloaded Firefox from someplace that required you to sign up for it or charged you, then I suggest canceling your credit card (which you should do anytime there is suspected unauthorized activity) and uninstall Firefox. • Why is officejet 6700 black ink more expensive than the other colors

why is hp officejet 6700 black ink almost twice as expensive as the other colors?

The black cartridge is larger and has more than twice the ink of the standard color cartridges.
If you do much printing you might want to consider the XL version of the cartrdiges.  The 932XL is rated at 1000 pages for $32 compared to the standard black cartridge rated at 400 pages for $20.

  • If I would buy a iPhone 5s A1457 in europe, will I be able to use it in Australia?

If I would buy a iPhone 5s A1457 in europe, will I be able to use it in Australia?

Maxime, If you bought it with Apple in Nederland (or België) it is unlocked and you can put any sim card in it. If you go to Australia for a long time, do as Allan says, because although it will work, you will not have guarantee in Australia.
If you bought it from a provider, it is locked to that provider and you can not use it with another sim card. This is not really a problem when you are only going to Australia for a short visit, you can go on using your NL sim card, but note that you better set Dataroaming to OFF, otherwise it could be a very costly trip. SMS and telephone will also be more expensive in Australia with a dutch card.
The prices in Australia are not much different (tax included) from NL and BE.

  • Can i upgrade my macbook pro i5 to a i7 without buying the i7 module?

so I stay on amazon when it comes to new components for my MacBook Pro, just to see the products that could potincally help me operate the system batter or anything along those lines. So today I went on just to browse and stumbled upon the "intel core i7", now I had originally thought that whatever module you had gotten would be it unless you wanted to shell out another few grand for the i7..
Upon findind this product it occured to me that maybe I could perchase the i7 processor and then simply install it however need be to upgrade to the i7 without the purchase of another MacBook Pro. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if that is possable, and if you can make your computer an i7 and basicly have it appear as that is how you computer cameupon purchase?
If anyone could answer this question that would be an amazing help.

If you want to change the CPU, it is not only the cpu you will have to change, the bus, the controller, ending up in the main board completely, the firmware module, etcetera. Very interesting but twice as expensive as the whole computer.

  • Seeking advice regarding networked attached drive

I am considering two options to share our family's EyeTV library, 1080i home videos, photos, and iTunes music over our home network of several Macs. We have one G4 Mac Mini running OS 10.4.8 (the last OS that runs Classic), but only OS 10.6.x / 10.7.x (when avail) systems will use the networked drive. I will NOT put Time Machine on the networked drive using option #1, but I might consider TM on a NAS:
    (1) AEBS with an OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro single HD enclosure + 2 or 3 GB HD.
    (2) Synology NAS, such as DS411slim or DS410 with four drives in Synology Hybrid RAID. (Synology claims to have full Time Machine compatibility; Synology owners seem to agree.)
I have done lots of reading on both options and I am aware that risks/problems exist with each approach. Option #2 will probably be about twice as expensive as #1, but it will offer much greater capacity and peace-of-mind RAID redundancy. Our home is hard-wired, and I do not plan on using WIFI often.
Future-proofing is about guesswork and hearing what people have to say. I welcome the Forum's recommendations, and any other ideas people have.

Yes, I hear you re: Time Machine. I actually do most of my backing up with SuperDuper because of all the TM issues. But there's something to be said for redundancy, and hourly backups do add redundancy beyond bootable backups.
Regarding the main question of (1) versus (2), do you have any advice?
Backing-up via an Airport Extreme is still "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Nobody knows what may be coming, but there's no indication it will be.
A third option, which I didn't mention, is to stick to local drives only, then do wake-on-LAN when I need HD contents on another Mac. That's probably the simplest and cheapest solution.
Yes, that's the simplest and most reliable, as in the last paragraph of my previous post. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for setup instructions to back up laptop Macs.

  • Choosing Office 2013 volume licensing plan ... or going retail ... or subscription ... or hunting for 2010 ... what a headache ...

Our company currently runs an office software equivalent comparable to Office 2003 level. I was researching options (licensing!) for stepping up our office to real Microsoft Office product ... and got stuck with that idea ... totally confused at this point.
Am I missing something or the cheapest SMB volume licensing option for MS Office 2013 (Standard, no Access component) is like twice as expensive as the retail equivalent? Why is that so? It makes no sense to me at all.
I can find retail box of Office 2013 Home and Business for around $190 while the cheapest Open License for similar equivalent seems to be priced at $369 (what!?) ... and that is even without Software Assurance?
Makes it kinda hard to convince management about benefits of VL program over retail ... especially since we are not a Volume Licensed customer (yet) and this purchase *might* make it worth becoming one (does it?).
On top of that I can't even make decision if we should really go with Office 2013 after reading about live/online account requirement for activation, and here a question how does it work in volume licensing version? I assume it will be a great pain with
installs from retail media and activation, but VL should have some tools or workarounds for that, no? I read that Office 2010 didn't have such problems and am sad I didn't push towards it when it was still available on retail market.
Maybe we should go with 2013 subscription for first year and see how that works for us ...
One thing for sure, I've been digging around this subject for weeks and my headache doesn't want to go away.
    Open to suggestions.

    anybody, any insights?
Pls, also note that I run a one person IT department for this company, so all the dirty work (installs) will be done by me, hence my question. I can do deployments via GPO, but would like to know about activation gotchas (MS live accounts) for Office 2013,
is that true for retail licenses?
As per Volume Licensing, am I looking right and cheapest 1 computer Office 2013 open license stands for like $369? why is i so expensive in volume licensing plans? I doubt our management approves it this way ... which probably means retail licensing for
me and a great headache with activations over a sneaker net ... times 30 ...

  • Small Office Router RV08/016 or 891 -which appropriate?

I am not certain this is correct forum, but I doubt sales techs will be able to provide requested info. I am a knowledgable newbie, but not formally trained. After 6 or 7 years, the old Linksys died and am looking to upgrade hardware and inet access. It is a small, professional office, at most 3-5 people (on a seasonal basis). First criteria is, at a minimum, dual WAN access for reliability. We are a ship without a rudder without internet access. Questions:
    1. According to Router Performance table, dated 11/3/2009, the 890 series supports 51.2 Mbps with no services. Is that figure 1. per port in each direction, 2. per port with both directions combined, or 3. is it some combo of both WAN ports.
1.A. According to testing at SmallNetBuilder, the RV 08 & 016 have a simultaneous throughput of about 150 Mbps. Considering the 890 is about twice as expensive as the RV08/016, can someone help me understand why?
1.B. I may add FIOS at 25/25 Mbps as a second WAN, so either RVs or 891 should handle the line speed. Am I correct that the 891 is the option which has 2 GbE WAN ports? FIOS tech has said they can run an ethernet line in from the outside box, while the DSL is also ethernet.
    2. I think the 891 has more options to configure the interaction between the 2 WANs, but that very configurability makes me nervous and doubt my technical skills. I really do not mind the CLI, but have no experience with Cisco's OS. Can anyone recommend a good book or is the documentation on the CISCO website usually adequate?
2.A. I understand the RVs will use either WAN or the survivor if one fails, but that the RVs will not bond the speeds of each WAN so that the throughput to the WAN is the speed of the WAN being used by the RVs. Will the 891 bond the 2 WANS so that total throughput is the combined speed of both WANs?
2.B. If the answer is yes, will I still have to direct that https access proceed only through one WAN so that recipients on the WEB, such as banks and government agencies, are not confused by the bonding process?
    3. Does the 891 provide more ways to make use of a dual WAN situation? If I do not go with the 891, I will probably buy the RV016 for the multiple WANS, as 3G seems interesting as a backup service.
3.A. As this location is a home office, does the 891 afford the  option of creating time-based rule sets for the bonding of the WANS so  that during daytime a configuration suitable for the office is used and at night a configuration suitable for speed and family enjoyment is used?
    4. Is it possible to use the USB port as an additional WAN port by attaching a USB 3G modem? I think the answer is no, but maybe I am wrong.
    5. The 891 info page says something about the 891 having a dial-up backup ability. Is that an additional WAN port (RJ45?) in addition to the 2 WAN ports?
    6. I have 2 VOIP lines running over a dedicated DSL line at 3M/768k. Does either the RV or the 890 provide better support for VOIP? I plan on buying a CISCO Series 300 managed switch to plug into the router. Does either router work better with the switch?
    7. Except for the possible multi WAN bonding by the 891 and the VOIP issue, the RVs seem to provide most of what I need for less cost than the 891, but since I have no experience with routers at this level, is someone with experience willing to point out some of the benefits I will get from the 891 which I will not have with the RVs?
Thank you to anyone who wades through this post (even if you do not respond, though responses are exceedingly appreciated).

    1. According to Router Performance table, dated 11/3/2009, the 890 series supports 51.2 Mbps with no services. Is that figure 1. per port in each direction, 2. per port with both directions combined, or 3. is it some combo of both WAN ports.
The value of 51.2 Mbps, with CEF enabled, expressed in HALF duplex and no encryption.  Half the value and you'll get the WAN speed expressed in Full duplex OR with encryption.  Half this value further and you'll get the WAN speed expressed in Full Duplex AND with encryption.
    Few things about the 890:
    1.  PoE support with the purchase of a daughterboard and a separate power supply.  Only 4 (out of 8) LAN ports will have PoE support.
    2.  Supports up to 14 VLANs (including VLAN 1).
    3.  8 Layer 2 FastEthernet ports, 1 GigabitEthernet port and 1 WAN port.
    4.  Supports Zone Based Firewall (ZBW).
As long as you are comfortable with configuring the 890 with CLI you can take steps in getting there.  Like what your are doing now, posting your questions in this forum, alot of people can help you with your issues if you provide us with a description of what you are trying to do.
    3. Does the 891 provide more ways to make use of a dual WAN situation? If I do not go with the 891, I will probably buy the RV016 for the multiple WANS, as 3G seems interesting as a backup service.
I don't think the 890 supports dual WAN connection.  The 890 does not have a 3G upgrade option.
3.A. As this location is a home office, does the 891 afford the  option of creating time-based rule sets for the bonding of the WANS so  that during daytime a configuration suitable for the office is used and at night a configuration suitable for speed and family enjoyment is used?
Heck yeah.  You can create a time-based Access Control List (ACL) and attach this to your WAN link.  As long as the time and date are correct, of course.
    4. Is it possible to use the USB port as an additional WAN port by attaching a USB 3G modem? I think the answer is no, but maybe I am wrong.
The USB port of the 890 is predominantly used for data transfer of files to-and-from the USB stick.  It's not designed as a "LAN/WAN" link.  It's also useful in case the firmware of your router gets corrupted because you can boot the router's IOS from a specially formatted USB stick.

  • Master source files mysteriously go offline, no workaround-{??}

I am working on a short film project in Final Cut Pro (latest version, but not latest update). I imported the footage as a master clip, then split it into three large clips. Anyways, I have the whole thing edited except a few additionaly scenes on a new tape. So I try to log and capture the last remaining scenes with a new camera I just bought, but I keep getting a message saying "Cannot capture footage as there is no video". This problem didn't exist with my old camera, so I get confused. What happened was, in my haste I fiddled around with some settings I shouldn't have. I think the problem started when I switch my MEDIA MANAGER file destination to another external hard drive. I don't know why I did this, but I thought it would help. Around this same time, I tried to log and capture by "batch", something I have never tried before. But then I realize something - More than half of my film has gone offline!!
When I try to reconnect the media and perform a SEARCH, I get a referenced film called "Untitled1" that is a 5 second clip that has nothing to do with the 12 minute clip of footage that has gone offline in my timeline. So, I try to manual find the 12 minute file, but cannot. At this point, I am afraid that my 12 minute file, which could have been named "Untitled" also has been replaced by this 5 second clip. So, I try and search ALL "Untitled" files, but my 4 or so Gig file is not showing up. To my knowledge, the file couldn't have been deleted, since I seem to have the same amount of free space on the hard drive as I had before.
Next, I figure it's somehow the camera, which wouldn't let me import new footage. I return the camera and get a new, (and albeit twice as expensive) camera, but the same error persists. [[on a side note: If in log and capture, you get a 'preview disabled', how does one ENABLE preview?
Anyways weird thing is, I see the footage fine in the camera's LCD, but not on Final Cut, which is telling me there is no video. And, at this point, I'm not sure what it is exactly I did when I fiddled with my Final Cut Pro settings to screw it up this much. A third of the film, referencing "Untitled2" and "Untitled3" master files is still there and plays fine, and all of my EDITS are there, except that that other 3/4 of footage is offline and unviewable. [[rendering all doesn't help at all]]
I tried opening a new project and importing, but I get the same error message and cannot import my tape. I tried OLD tapes that worked fine before and were already used, but the problem persists. I've tried everything I know, but I cannot get my footage ONLINE. I can find no place on my computer where most of my footage should be. When I tried to reconnent using a different file, my offline edits can completely thrown off, but at least I made a backup for THAT. I should have made a backup to the original, but that was my error.
At this point, it seems I need to reedit it, but I can not even import my original tapes now!!!
I would immensely appreciate help, as I am in turmoil and have a deadline to send this film in to complete my short film collection.
I can supply more information, but please respond, and I will work with you. This film means everything to me.

#30 - Deck recognition after Tiger Upgrade:
    Shane's Stock Answer #30:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1063600&#1063600
The credit for this goes to Bob Sidebotham:
I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I've been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).
The workaround is to download Quicktime manually, after removing the "receipts" which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:
    1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).
    2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.
    3. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.
    4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCP and see your camera.

  • Rough time getting a new phone

My Alltel prepaid phone gave up on me and I had to get a new one.  First checking Verizon's web site- no possibility to "upgrade" for former alltel customers ( "upgrade" - wireglish for" to purchase a new device"). Calling customer "service". OK., no problem at all. I just had to go to a Verizon store. I got too optimistic and inquired whether I could get a Nokia phone- sure , I should go to Best Buy or walmart and they got them, no problem. I got carried away and actually spent the gas and time driving to those stores- zilch. OK, let's try Verizon store.  They told me that if I wanted to keep the alltel plan I had to pay  " retail", which with their cheapest model would be about $ 200.- plus sales' tax. Aftewr A while I left the store, back home calling customer " service " again. This time the lady said that they would activate a Verizon or Alltel phone for my account obtained " elsewhere', without being clear where I should get it from.  OK. Driving across town to a different Verizon store, the one which helped me in the past then they did not want to ad money to my account. The first rep said that they did not replace prepaid phones at all and that I would have to spend over 200$ to get one. Before I gave up, another rep listened into the conversation and said" that is not true he can get a replacement if he had the phone more than a year. Then the alltel/ verizon issue came up again, but they were not as motivated to get me off the Alltel plan as the people before and after 30 minutes calling, walking to the back rooms etc they allowed me to buy one model ( they chose it, I had no saying in that ). I had to buy another 10 $ plus tax air time which I did not need but they insisted. So just before sunset I became the owner of a cheapo Samsung with a joke of a VGA camera, but it worked! Checking on line I was indeed back on my Alltel plan, only the 10.$ worth of additional airtime I paid at the store was not there, I had to call once again the customer "service'.
They really go all the way to let you drop your Alltel plan and switch to Verizon plan. ( almost twice as expensive). Sad.
P.S. Some of thir small print is funny. They raise the ETF for people with more expensive phones to $ 350.- - wow. Also, off course, you can bring the phone back within 30 days, but they charge you $ 35,- restocking fee, and for those with new service they do not refund the activation fee after 3 days ! And much more.

Hmm..... No reaction from Verizon people browsing this forum..... It is certainly no surprise to them.
