Twist howto restore defaults *including* partitions/bootloader after they were deleted?

In recent months, while experiementing with Ubuntu installs and dualboot setups, I intentionally deleted all of the factory partitons on the 500GB internal drive - and in doing so also deleted the factory bootloader/GPT by mistake.
At present my Twist works fine (I'm using it now in EFI mode with a GPT), but only has Ubuntu on it, and now that I've been through all of this what I want is to reset the Twist back to its factory state (including the boot loader and GPT partitions and recovery info and Win8 install and so on), and then later I'll start over with Ubuntu to end up with a working dualboot.
However, since deleting the original partitions and GPT boot loader - I've no idea how to get it back to original/stock.
What I think I want is simply a copy of the entire Disk Image that was surely/probably used originally, which includes the parition table and boot loader and the recovery parition and the OS partiton with Win8 installed, and all that jazz.
So a few weeks ago I called Lenovo support, who didn't have any useful advice - but they did mail me some DVDs... specifically: "Operating System Recovery Disc Windows 8 (OEM Activation 3.0 Required)" which is two DVDs.
However, in browsing those DVDs they don't look like regular bootable install discs, and there's no clear instruction regarding how to use these DVDs that includes what to do if the drive/partitons/boot loader had been wiped, as all of the instructions presume the original partitions and recovery tools are still there.
I'm not worried about preserving any data currently on the drive or preserving the current Linux install, I've already saved my data elsewhere and will just reintstall Lunix later.
It seems so straight forward.  For instance, if I'd used something like Ghost to create an image of the entire drive I could easily put it all back myself, but I didn't, so I'm hoping (I think) to get a copy of the Lenovo image of some equivalent.  Surely something like this exists, else how would they setup a new machine or a new physical drive?
I love Ununtu on this machine, and it covers about 95% of my computing needs, but some things just won't work in an emulator such as Wine and instead require me to have a working Windows install too.
Ideas?   I need to get this sorted asap.
Thanks.

Hello,
I don't have my ThinkPad S230u with me right now, so I cannot give step-by-step instructions, but from my notes I see that I received four DVDs from Lenovo support to recover the machine, labeled:
OS Recovery Disc Windows 8 (1 of 2)
OS Recovery Disc Windows 8 (2 of 2)
Applications and Drivers Recovery Disc for S230u Type 3347 (1 of 2)
Applications and Drivers Recovery Disc for S230u Type 3347 (2 of 2)
I connected an external USB DVD±RW disc drive to my S230u, booted from the first OS Recovery Disc, and proceeded to switch through the remaining three discs until the recovery program asked me if I had any more discs to load.  At that point, I selected No or Cancel (don't remember the exact option, but it was something like that), and was prompted to eject the DVD.  I did that, and the S230u then began the remaining process of reinstalling the operating system.
Unfortunately, I am unsure of how long that took, since I went with friends that evening, but it was definitely done later that evening or at least by the early morning hours.

    Yes.
And will it restore if the hd isn't even there? Like what if it got stolen or destroyed.
    Also yes.
Directly-connected external drives (ie, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) are not backed-up by default.  You must remove them from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options to get them backed-up.  (Network drives cannot be backed-up.)
And they must be formatted for a Mac -- any variation of Mac OS Extended.
If the drive is connected, you can browse or restore normally -- just go to the folder or document in question and Enter Time Machine.
If the drive is not connected, it's a bit different.  See #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • HT201376 If I do a system restore, will I lose Photoshop  etc? They were downloaded from the internet so I don't have a disk.

I would like to do a system restore on my MacBook Pro but I do not want to lose Photoshop Elements, etc. Can I put them on my external hard drive? Also, will they be deleted from the computer or no?

Always make a backup of your content before reinstalling the operating system so reduce the chance of losing content.
If you do a simple reinstall of Mac OS X, and do not do a clean or erase install, you should not lose content.  All you do is reinstall the operating system itself.  But, again, make a backup as a protection.

  • How to restore Files including Photos, Contacts.etc after wiping out in the absence of performing any back up ?

I Actually, I have wiped My Blackberry torch 9800 out although I Have Not done any Back up . So, Is there any possibility to recover My files Including Photos, Videos, Contacts ,..Etc? Because I Really need those Files for Student examination Purposes ?! If you could deliver If anything can be done so,,, your responses are appreciated,,,, Waiting for your response,,,,,

No backup at all?  Were you not even running protect?  How about sync'ing with a computer or with the cloud?
If you really don't have any form of backup and did not sync with Outlook, Google, or something, nor sync music and pictures with a computer, then whatever you had on device memory is gone.  If you were using a media card then you may have that, unless it got wiped in the process.

  • I restored my iPhone from a backup and apps were deleted, but the space they took is still unavailable on my phone?

I had to restore my iPhone from a abckup which I made last night, and when I did, it deleted all my apps. I don't mind, but the amount of space they took up is stilll being taken up on my phone, just in the "other" category. I don't understand why, and I will need to delete some of it so I can redownload the apps. How do I do this?

  • I restored my ipod but songs downloaded via wifi were deleted.

I had to restore my ipod as some songs weren't deleting. All the songs that were on my computer were not deleted but the ones that I had downloaded via wifi didn't come back. These songs were not transferred to my computer. Is there any way to get these back or do i have to pay for them again in iTunes?

Yes, I thought that's what Restore should do, but the problems remain.  Hmmm, the out of order 'album's' songlist is notated 1 of 8, 2 of 8, 3 of 8...  I'll try 01, 02...
    Probably a good idea.
The other album is running through the list of songs like fast-forward, but not playing the songs.  Then, iPod locks up.
Do these same tracks play okay in iTunes?  What is the original source for these tracks?  Were they downloads from the iTunes Store or imported from outside of iTunes?  What format are they encoded in and at what bitrate?

  • After an erroneous contacts delete on the mac, they've been removed from icloud and all the synced devices. I was able to restore the contacts from a backup, but since the iCloud version is newer than the backuped one, they are deleted every iCloud sync

After an erroneous contacts delete on the mac, they've been removed from iCloud and all the synced devices.
I was able to restore the contacts from a backup, but since the iCloud version is newer than the backuped one, they are deleted every iCloud sync.
Now I have an iPhone with the contacts and iCloud deactivated, but I lost all the contacts on the Mac and the iPad.
There is a way to tell iCloud "restart using the contacts I have on this device"?

An iCloud backup will save the state of your Camera Roll at the time of the backup but, if you delete photos from the Camera Roll, they will not be in the next backup taken.
If you are using the iCloud Photo Library (beta) read this FAQ which will tell you what happens when you delete photos from one of the devices sharing the Photo Library.
iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
    The relevant section is:
How does iCloud delete photos and videos from iCloud Photo Library?
Deleting a photo or video from your Photos app will also remove the item from iCloud Photo Library and from your iCloud storage allocation. Photos and videos you remove can be recovered from the Recently Deleted album for 30 days. After 30 days, your content will be removed from the Recently Deleted album. Photos are backed up on our servers for up to 30 days after they're deleted from the Photos app. If you need to recover these photos during that time, contact Apple Support.

  • Software to restore apps window size and position after change in screen resolution

    I use a 27' iMac'10 with SL 10.6.8, running it at 2560x1440 screen resolution.
Whenever I have to attend meetings via GoToMeeting or Webex and need to present, the resolution is too high, since most participants are on 15' laptops or even iPad's these days.  Therefore, I reset the screen resolution to 1600x900 for the time of the presentation.
After the meeting is over, I reset the resolution back to 2560x1440.
Problem: After the reset, all my apps are scaled and out of place, so I need to manually reset them to their original sizes and positions.  I use Divvy to make this a bit less painful, but still it's a manual chore.
Is there any software out there that let's me restore my windows to the exact settings they were the last time before I changed screen resolution?

I agree, the ability to remember window sizes and positions when switching between laptop and using the Thunderbolt display would be very useful.  It's like your Mac remembering the volume level depending on whether you have headphones plugged in or not.

  • Please help restore DMG missing partition and access file vault.

I am quite emotional at the moment, if anyone can help me access my files, pictures of my baby daughter and important documents.. I would be extremely grateful and willing do make a donation via paypal.
I have a 160 GB hard drive, which was partitioned as 30GB Spare and 130GB with my operating system and user files, including my filevault user directory.
My computer was downloading movies which filled up the 130GB partition, most of the 130GB is contained in my personal filevault user directory, my computer became very slow and unresponsive and i tried to free up space by deleting files which i no longer needed.
The machine became slow and un-responsive and required a number of forceful shut downs and restarts until the machine would no longer boot up, I inserted the OSX CD and attempted to boot from CD and use disc utility which now only displays my 30GB storage space, I was forced to install OSX on the remaining 30GB partition.
Now running OSX on the 30GB partition i used DISK DRILL to scan my hard disk for the missing 130GB partition which it did and i was able to save this as a DMG file to a external hard disk, now i am able to get this DMG to mount in the OSX i am running on the spare 30GB space, however i am not able to access the majority of the data inside the file vaulted user account.
I would like to know, would it be possible to restore the missing partition, as it remains on the HD but seems to be hidden.
Or is there somehow i can login to the user account on the mounted DMG ?
I am not very familiar with using terminal and would be extremely grateful for any advice or support leading to the recovery of my files.

Is there anyway to restore and boot the missing partition ?
Probably not.     You've now deleted the partition.  It was probably useless anyway, though.
When i run disk drill or other disk recovery tools i am able to see the partition including including the files and my personal sparsebundle.
But you can't open the sparse bundle, much less see any of the files inside it, right?
Since you've already recovered the (probably-damaged) sparse bundle containing your encrypted home folder, you'll have to work with it.
I'd strongly recommend making another copy of that on another external HD and putting that "on the shelf" before doing anything else to it.   I suspect you have little chance of recovery, but don't take the risk of further damage.
You haven't answered my earlier questions:
Have you tried to run Repair Disk on either the original or copied partition?
If that doesn't help, this might:  http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/fixfilevault.html
Do you have Time Machine backups?
Obviously, now that the partition has been deleted, you can't run repair disk on it, but try it on the recovered disk image.
You need more expertise than either Christopher or I have.  Since Apple no longer uses "legacy" File Vault, it will be more difficult for them to help, too.
Is your Mac covered by AppleCare?  If so, give them a call.
If not, your nearest Apple Store Genius Bar might be able to help:  http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
Or check for an Apple Authorized Service Provider: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434?viewlocale=en_US
If not, one of them may know of an outside service than can help.  That will be quite expensive.

  • Default EFI partition configuration

    Hello,
I need to know what the default EFI partition should look like.
I installed Windows 8 via EFI and then removed it and it left its bootloader behind which keeps defaulting to the primary startup disk, so I deleted the Microsoft portion and now it wont boot all by itself, just a gray screen leading to nothing.  Holding down Option will allow me to select the correct disk but I'd like to get this working again.
    So here are my questions:
    1.  What does the default EFI partition look like?  File structure I mean.
Here are the commands in case you need them:
    #mkdir /Volumes/efi
    #diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE                   NAME                                 SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                                             *251.0 GB     disk0
       1:                        EFI                                                            209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS                Macbook HD                 151.0 GB   disk0s2
       3:                 Apple_Boot                Recovery HD                  650.0 MB   disk0s3
       4:                  Apple_HFS                Bootcamp VM                  99.0 GB    disk0s4
    #sudo mount -t msdos /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/efi
    #ls /Volumes/efi
    2.  Does the Windows install edit the /Volumes/efi/Boot/bootx64.efi file?
If you need any new info to help me out please let me know.

That's the reason why Apple doesn't support Windows installations via EFI. I tried it in my iMac and Windows also modified the EFI partition. Some bootups later, Windows started showing BSODs, and when it was working, I was lucky if Windows could start up.
The EFI partition is hidden and is used to store firmware updates in order to be installed during the startup. Now, Windows has used it to store the Windows boot files, so you may have problems installing firmware updates. The structure looks fine, but the problem is that it's not being used for its original purpose.
Respecting to your second question, bootx64.efi is the Windows startup file, so of course that Windows copies that file to the EFI partition and is edited as needed.
My advice is to reinstall OS X starting in Internet Recovery (holding Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting), erase the whole storage with Disk Utility, install OS X and then, install Windows again. And never install Windows in EFI mode if you aren't completely sure about what you are doing

  • How to restore default BIOS settings on Toshiba 1410 / 1415 / 2410 laptops? Option to CHGBIOSA?

I  have problems booting to any operating system but DOS on Toshiba Satellite 1410 (in very good physical condition) after few years of inactivity (drained down main battery and CMOS battery - now they're charged)
Windows stops with BSOD (error 0x0000008e), Linux stops with kernel panic, bad_area_nosemaphore and IRQ error.
Plain MS-DOS 7.10 seems to run OK.
BIOS was 1.40 with main password set. After first boot it displayed request for entering password and pressing F1 key to set the hardware clock. Now it doesn't display this message anymore.
Two memory modules (Nanya - 256 MB, 266 MHz, CL 2,5) are OK - checked on different versions of MemTest86+
(Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool hangs when starting!)
I dismantled laptop and cleaned very small amount of dust inside with compressed air.  Changed thermal paste on the processor (Celeron M 1,8) and bridge. Turned laptop on with extension cards, battery and disk and without them also.
    It didn't help.
I flashed the CMOS with BIOS 1.20, 1.30 and 1.40 back again. None of the versions didn't let booting neither Windows nor Linux.
MS-DOS, PC-DOS, FreeDOS still run OK.
What's more interesting - after flashing procedure all BIOS settings were intact (booting priority, battery saving mode, etc.). And yes - I removed the password before flashing!
I was suspicious about problems occuring when laptop was entering 32-bit mode and checked it with Video Memory Stress Test.
When CMOS was flashed with 1.20 BIOS above test was running flawlessly. However, with 1.30 and 1.40 version it stopped >>Unhandled Exceptopn "Access Denied"<< in 8th iteration when lucky. Most of the time it stopped after 2nd or 3rd iteration after framebuffer subtest.
    So my question are:
    - did CMOS lost its settings or somehow they were corrupted after long period of laptop's inactivity?
    - is Video extension of this BIOS flashable?
    - why the settings are NOT restored to defaults after each CMOS flashing?
    - or maybe there is some hidden switch/option to CHGBIOSA flasher to reset non-flashable CMOS area?
    - or is my built-in Video Card (nVidia NV17M) or IRQ enumerator dead?

Hi Jerry! I think I'm on board now, anyway I hope so. I removed both devices and switched them around. The device manager shows two USB devices. One is Mass Storage and one is Composite. I don't realy know which one is the 1TB and which one is the 16 GB. In my boot menu, it just says USB now?? My laptop only has three USB ports. Two on the right and One on the left. I have a wireless mouse plugged in one of the ports on the right as you can see in device manager. I hope this is what you were asking. I can be a little thick headed at times, so let me know what else you want me to try Thank you for your kind reply. It really means a lot to me.

  • E72 : "Item no longer available; Restoring default...

    Hi all,
Has anyone seen this message on E72 ?
I have had my E72 for abt a month. After much struggle and trial/errors I had got most of the stuff working (email etc.).
HOWEVER, I made the big mistake of accepting the firmware v 023.xx upgrade. It never completed the update successfully (the USB connection kept getting lost).
But the worst part is I am now getting these random messages when I am simply scrolling thru' the menu items.
"Item no longer available. Restoring default key setting".
Has anyone seen this message on E72 ? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
When I check the firmware it still shows 021.024 dated 17-Oct-2009.

Did you upgrade using OVI or NSU?  I did upgrade mine to 023.002 with NSU 2.4.1.  If you use Vista or 7 as OS, make sure you have Administrator right while installing OVI, PC Suite, or NSU.
During the installation, the phone disconnected.  I remove the USB connection and the battery as well, then plug the USB and battery in then click Retry.  It worked after 2 times remove and plug-in.
I never seen the message you have before.  I think it is because the firmware upgrade didn't finish successfully.  And for USB keep disconnected, try use other USB port and make sure it is direct connection from PC to E72 without using any USB hub.

  • TS3579 I found this useful because I did not know about the effect of typing in data and that you could only drag to rearrange the data.  I had typed in data before and this had caused problems but restoring defaults did not cause correct dates to show up

I found this  (TS3579: If the wrong date or time is displayed in some apps on your Mac Learn about If the wrong date or time is displayed in some apps on your Mac) useful because I did not know about the effect of typing in data and that you could only drag to rearrange the data.  I had typed in data before and this had caused problems but restoring defaults did not cause correct dates to show up in Finder.

It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

  • Syncing with iTunes after iCloud Restore Defaults to Past Sync

After I had restored my iPhones using a recent iCloud backup, some of my content such as certain videos and music needed to be installed through syncing with iTunes. All of my apps were arranged and installed as they were before the resoration. I had iTunes set to not automatically begin to sync when I plug in any of my iOS devices, so I can review the device first and then begin the sync. Upon plugging in my iPhone, I checked the applications tab, and all of the apps were arranged the way they were when I would unlock my iPhone; everything seemed normal. It would appear that the content that had not been restored through the iCloud restore would simply be installed though syncing with iTunes. The second I hit sync, iTunes began to restore my iPhone with a very early sync, as many of the apps I had deleted some time ago were being installed onto my phone, and my of the applications added since that specific sync were removed. What can I do to just have iTunes act as it should when finishing the restoration on my phone and not default to a stubborn sync? I'm currently restoring my phone from another recent iCloud backup to have all of my apps and their settings restored to how they were less than 12 hours ago.

First make sure you have the most recent version of iTunes. Use the itunes menu to check for updates and install the latest version if needed.
Reboot your computer and rest your iphone. Press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the buttons and let the device restart. No data will be lost doing this. It's like rebooting a computer.
