Twist on the sata oc problem

i've got an a64 3800+ with k8n neo2 mobo and 2x512 3700eb.  i'm oc'd pretty stably at 11x230 with a raptor raid on sata 3/4 and 2x seagate 160s on sata 1/2.
i've read that the instabilities with sata and oc start around 220-230.  here's my question, how do i check that the sata 1/2 ports are stable before i lose stuff on these drives.  mind you, there's nothing that isn't backed up on these drives but it'd be nice to know that they're going to be free from data corruption at 230.

If you want to test the reliability of your hard disks copy some huge files while the system is under stress such as with Prime95 running at high priority and then binary compare them. Of course doing so may very well corrupt your HD...
Unfortunately it seems that most of the threads contain half-truths or misconceptions. For instance it appears that with the Neo you need to set the AGP to 67 or 68 to get it to lock while you don't with the Neo2, but I see lots of Neo people telling Neo2 people they need to change it. That's both the beauty and the difficulty with forums such as this. You will probably get lots of advice and some of it may even be right.
There are various tools that ostensibly show the actual AGP frequency and they don't show anything but 66 when I OC. OTOH most of the fields show glaring errors probably due to bugs so who can really trust them? Ironically nVidia's nVSystemUtility is one of them. Someday I hope someone who can do something about it actually notices and tries to fix them.

  • Another twist on the endash conversion problem

    Hi everyone -
I know that there are several posts out here about the
conversion form X5 to RH 7.0 and "&endash;" appearing in the
actual compiled HTML instead of an actual –. Those have been
very helpful to me in getting my head around why I was seeing code
    in my compiled help!!
We have fixed all the erroneous &endash appearances in
our documentation, and have installed the 7.0.2 patch that has the
fix for when we open any of our other projects. So, here's what's
strange. I seem to be able to insert an endash just fine on my
computer using the Insert Symbol menu and the short cut Alt 0150
and things compile fine. Endashes looking like endashes. However,
my coworker, who is running the same version of RoboHelp with all
the patches that I have, is not able to insert the endash. It looks
fine in the WYSIWYG view in RoboHTML, but when she compiles, or
when she uses the preview (Eyeglasses icon), the dash displays as
&endash in the text. Her instance does not however convert all
the correct appearances of an endash... seems to only be anything
    new that she adds.
Any ideas? Our current work around is for her to use a
regular -, which is an ok work around, but I'd like a solution if
possible. We've looked for settings that might be different,
missions fonts, etc, and have come up with nothing.
    Thanks!
    Heather

  • Problem with SATA hard discs and MSI motherboards (could it be the SATA cable)

    I have two systems with a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250620AS 250GB Serial ATA (3.0Gb/s)
    hard disk.
One system has a P965 Neo and the other has a PN6 SLI motherboard.
I am having issues in that the OS seems to install properly but after a few days the users gets on hd type problems.
One users workstation the hard drive would not boot. Tried everything to get it to work from F8 but it would get stuck in the window flash screen with the bottom moving accross the screen.
The other just kept giving the user disk type errors with blue screens.
I since have replaced P965 mobos hd with a pata. Its only been running for a day not sure if that solved it.
The other machine I put the drive into another machine I was building and it found errors and fixed them and booted up. This same hd would not work at all in the prior system so I am RMAing that board. Even a PATA would not finish xp installation with that MOBO.
I am not sure but I have a feeling that the SATA cables may be the cause of this type of problem. These are SATA2 drives. I tend to think you have to use better quality drive cables when using these.
Those things are so flimsy as they are. I think some cables are better then others. Whos the idiot that designed those things?
MSI only gives you one sata cable. My dvd uses one as well.
Has anyone else had issues using the newer faster drives?
I build a lot of machines but have only been building SATA drives for the past 6 months. These are the first to use this seagate 16 mb drive. When SATA first came out I had these types of issues so avoided using them for over a year. Now I would like to continue using them. But these cables appear to have connection issues.

Its happening to two different computers with 2 alike drives. I have 2 other drives not even opened yet. It does appear to be a cable issue however, I don't think I will take the chance and keep the 2 unopened drives as that would be even more risky. I am already stuck with 2.
These drives seem to be very fast at least. But those cheap sata cables are not too comforting.

  • Rs480 windows-sata installation problem

    Hi all,
Whenever I try to install windows in my system I press the F6 button and loads the sil3112 sata driver. The first time I tried this worked(win xp with no sps) and I got to install windows. But after sometime I decided reinstall windows. This time when I tried to install windows(win xp with sp1) with the usual procedure like loading the sata driver through F6 method it didnt work. When I reach the partitioning blue screen and when I give prompt to format the drive or partition it windows say that “however the disk does not contain a windows compatible partition” and thus have to exit.
The same thing happened when I tried to install xp 64bit with sil drivers given in msi site.
Please do help me with this problem.

Why not install like you did before, not using a slipstreamed version? It may do the trick!
Are you runnign single SATA? (I didn't find it in your summary, may looked over it ... maybe you can give your specs like in my signature )
i'll try you way.but its difficult to get a pure xp. i'll have to dig hard for that.
for ur 2nd question. i am not running a single sata. i have one sata 80gb and another 20 gb ide.is that a problem

  • Mac Mini slow when accessing hd - NVidia MCP79 SATA Driver Problem?

I bought a Mac Mini (Early 2009) a while ago. Unfortunately i have a problem concerning speed and responseability which i couldnt solve even with a lot of googleing.
I noticed that problem first time when i tried to play a video file from hd. The video does not play as smooth as it should. It stutters from time to time. It is like a short interruption. The picture freezes for half a second and replays the lost frames very fast after that. These freezes do not occure periodically. It seems to appear randomly. The wierd thing is that the cpu usage is very low and there is enough free ram and disk space.
So i think its not a ressource problem. I noticed that these freezes do not only affect video playback. The whole system is kind of unresponsive. And thats the the case if there is some sort of hd or dvd access. When i try to copy a huge file these freezes are increasing rapidly. The more hd access the more the system is unresponsive and cannot be used anymore.
All these effects reminded me of a faulty dma/udma setting on windows machines. So i tried to check the transfer mode for my macs hd controler. But i didnt find any place where to check that. And i dont really think it is running in pio mode because that would result in a high cpu usage.
I played around a little bit to understand whats going on. So this is what i found out:
When i play a video from the hd its stuttering. It increases if i copy a file from or to the hd. Copying a file from the dvd-rom increases the effect as well. It is not influenced by a copy from AND to an external usb hd. And the whole effects do not appear under Windows Vista no matter how much i acces the hd.
So i come to the conclusion that there must be something wrong with the SATA controler driver which is a NVidia MCP79. Unfortunately i have no idea what i can do to solve this problem. And i didnt find any advice or something in the internet.
So i would appreciate any suggestions.

Ok, I think I was jumping to conclusion. Disabling journaling didnt remove the problem. It just seemed so because my problem is much less distinct with Leopard. Bad luck I guess.
kmac1036, to answer your questions. For sure I dont have warranty anymore. Maybee I should have posted that I upgraded my Mac to 3 GB RAM. Furthermore I replaced the original Hitachi HD with a Western Digital 500 GB model.
Somehow that may be connected to my problem. I've read that many people have problems with the WD HD and those beachballing issues with SN. (I do so too)
But my performance problem when accessing the HD did also exist with the Hitachi. In fact the Mini was extremly slow with the original 1 GB RAM. I think putting some additional memory into the machine helped because it reduced hd accesses.
Ok, I am not an expert. But if I had to guess I would say the following seems to happen. There may be an operation in the hd driver that takes longer than it should. Because of that it maintains cpu cycles and prevents the kernel to continue scheduling. That would explain why the freezes are not connected to a high cpu usage and why the systems seems to catch up things after the freeze very fast.

  • SATA RAID problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum (nForce3 ultra) & winXP x64

I entered on MSI driver dowload page, put my model, and i found out that the RAID driver for win x64 wasn't released (nforce3 ultra), but in the same page was the driver for the nforce4, so I supposed it was compatible. I made the driver disk. press F6 and he askme for the drivers, ok, i introduce BOTH drivers, he detects perefctly the SATA RAID (stripping) format the disk, copy the files and ask me for some .CATof teh raid driver that wasn't on the zip file.... omit files, reboots, completes the instalation, but on the first boot of win x64 when it's just about to show the windows screen, a bue windows, and resets the pc so fast that's unreadable.  fail safe start.. same crash.
I Installed win on an IDE and it run prefectly... In th other hand... without installing any driver the windows instalation recognices the SATA drives, but not the RAID. Maybe I just got to install the raid driver but not the SATA driver... the nforce3 driver form nvidia.com is pretty old... The real funny is that when i installed winXp x64 BETA i hadn' any problem... (winXP 64 doesn't admit the 32 bit driver=
Which driver i'm supposed to install? to INSTALL winxp64 on a SATA RAID and make it boot from there?
    Thaks a lot

HI! i'm the one wih the raid problem on a k8n neo2....
That's what a i Did.. i unpacked the exe and copy the files in a floppy... question is: if i do that, windows instaler askme for some files that aren't in the .exe, anway it reconices the raid and everithing goes fine until the first BOOT on windos... it shows a blue screen, butremoves it so fast that i cant read it or pause the system. But i know it's a raid problem because if i install it on a ide disk it works.
The nforce3 drivers are almost a year old, and i'm not sure if nforce4 is compatible...
I think the're compatible because if you enter in msi driver download page and select my model, they put the Nforce3 and nforce4 for win64 and my model is only nforce3. The thing is they havent released the nforce3 for WIN 64.... So.. It's normal that win asks me for some files that ain't in the .zip file (i extracted the files o course) and Which driver should i put the Nvidia one year old nforce3 or the new nforce4. (the nforce3 for 32 bits is rejected by windows) or... i have to wait the new nforce3?

    Hi
I own a MacBook Pro Mid 2009 and I'm running OSX Mavericks with Windows 8.1 Pro Bootcamp.  I wanted to upgrade to an SSD drive and after reading the great reviews on Amazon, I purchased a Kingston 240GB SSD 2.5" V300 SATA 3.
Many of the buyers had installed the SSD drive on Macbook Pro, including "mid 2009' models without any real problems but I've just spent the best part of 3 hours trying to install the drive but so far, it has not worked and the problem seems to be that, although the Acronis True Image software that comes with the drive to 'clone' the source drive and install it onto the destination drive (new SSD drive), I get a message which states, "WARNING:  After migration, the O/S will not be able to boot from the destination disk in the BIOS - If you want to boot from the destination disk after migration, you need to enable UEFI booting in your system and then restart".
During one of my first attempts to install the SSD drive, I removed the original HDD from the MBP and installed it in the supplied 2.5" caddy and and connected it to the MBP via the USB cable supplied then installed the new Kingston SSD SATA3 drive in the MBP, powered up and then rebooted.  The Acronis bootable software launched and after choosing 'clone disk', cose source and destination drives, I got a message saying:  "The selected disk will be migrated as is (disks layout will remain GPT)".  "After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from the destination disk in the BIOS".
My system has the latest available Boot ROM Version (MBP.00AC.B03 and the SMC Version is 1.47f2 and as far as I am aware, Apple computers have no BIOS that you can access like on Windows computers and instead use EFI instead.
Both drives had Extended Journaled GUID Partitions on them and what baffles me is that other buyers of these Kingston SSD SATA3 drives appear to have managed to install the SSD drive, but I've had to give up.
I would really like to get the SSD drive working but so far I've failed.  Any advice would be appreciated and I'll try it out before reluctantly returning the drive for refund.

    Hi
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes the Acronis software is Windows but I read through a lot of reviews on the Kingston SSD SATA 3 drives Amazon and from what I can gather, after removing the original drives and installing that in the 2.5" caddy and then installing the new SD drive in the Macbook, those buyers then used the software to boot from and clone the source drive to the new drive.
I'm not sure if I mentioned it in my first post, but I did use the Disk Utility in Mac OSX and erased, formatted and partitioned the drive and then pushed CMD + R at start up but I was not able to install a copy of the OS because the drive was not recognised.
I think I also used the disk utility in Windows and then tried again in OSX but no luck.  I'm no expert but as stated above, the issue seems to be that the SSD drive is not booable in the BIOS (or Mac equivalent).
The SSD drive is SATA 3 and I'm sure that the SATA ports are SATA 1 on my MBP and maybe that the problem Perhaps someone can confirm this.

  • 2008 - How to make the SATA drives run full speed with Bootcamp and XP ?

Has anyone found a way - after all this time - of repairing a 2006 install of Windows XP SP2 - or in someway fixing the rather slow SATA drive problems?
I have not upgraded to 10.5 - but would if the new Bootcamp somehow (via new drivers??) fixed the problem!
My machine is now 2 years old ( 2.66 4 core ) and I finally need XP's full speed for a project - but most of the posts I've seen are fro 2006 and expired.
    Help!

And again, my objective to is get 'full speed' from the SATA drives while running XP.

  • Computer keeps getting folder with a question mark (?) I changed the HD and the SATA cable, now what?

The problem started when my computer was having problems reading the HD by slowing down and freezing. The Apple Genius told me the computer needed a new HD, and that it would cost $228 to replace it through them. I opted out and purchased a Hd myself and installed it. Everything was good for about two months until one day the screen went black and I smelled something burning on my Mac, yes like fire. Upon inspection I found the burning smell came from the middle of the SATA cable and that it shorted. I ordered a new cable from Hong Kong that took 22 days to get here. It still does not read the HD. I tried a SATA cable from a 2011 MacBook that still works (had to stretch it a little but still connected) I also tried the previous HD that was in there and two other HD from 2 different MacBooks that are still functional. Nothing worked. Is my motherboard toast as a result of the SATA cable dying? The computer reads an external drive, however, and can boot into time machine. The cable, btw had been receiving physical damage from the case when the MacBook lost its little black feet. This is where it fried as the section that had marks from the case melted the plastic right underneath.

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • KT4 Ultra Ide3/Sata connection problem

I have had this motherboard for about a year and have now decided to utilise one of the sata connection. the problem i am having is that i cant get either the bios to recognise a drivr connected to eide 3.
i have tried to rebiuld the system with a hard drive connected to the sata connector but cant get windows to recognise the sata drive.

  • Unable to boot up, not sure if it's the OSX, HDD, or maybe the SATA cable

So my Macbook pro takes up to 10 tries to boot up. What happens is itll turn on, apple logo will show up and progress bar gets to about 1/3. Then the screen turns gray and stays gray and then it restarts. However, once it is on i have no problems whats so ever. What ends up happening is if put the computer in sleep and wake it up it will freeze and i have to force restart and i back at the problem. I can not even boot up in safe mode. When i try to boot up with safe mode and verbose, after the intial screen with all the readings the screen turns gray and its the same problem. I have tried reinstalling Yosemite (clean install and just a reinstall) I have tried resetting SMC and PRAM. In verbose mode i noticed that it says it was unable to find bootcache.playlist so i tried this http://hkexperts.net/barry/fix-unable-to-open-vardbbootcache-playlist-for-osx/ but i get an error saying that there was no such file. It is also worth noting that i have bootcamp with windows 7 and I can boot in safe mode but if i try a regular boot i get stuck trying to boot or i get a blue screen. At this point i am ready to replace my HDD but i have heard that the SATA cable might also be an issue. Is there a way for me to be sure?
Macbook pro Late 2011 OSX yosemite

Take out the HDD and install it into an enclosure.  Connect it to the MBP via USB and use startup manager to boot the MBP:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204417
If the boot(s) shows no problems, the it points to an internal connection problem, the SATA cable.
    Ciao.

  • Sata drive problems

right my dilema is this i have buit a new system and everything works fine, finished it off by buying a couple of maxtor sata drives, a 200gig for storage and a 120gig for boot/os.
maxblast3 i cannot get to run from cd or floppy but it runs fine from windows so i am able to see the drives and format them etc.
saturday i spent best part on 12 hours trying to install windows xp on the 120 and everytime i was defeated, and finally got off with it, so cracked a bottle open
    ok then install process was
    boot form cd
    xp cd in drive
mobo sata drivers in floppy ready
press any key to boot from cd
    wait abit
F6 to install extra drivers, done that ok
cd activity copying files over ready to install
your pc will reboot in 15 seconds
boots up fine, don't press key to boot from cd
    bang my problem begins
the screen reads like this " press any key to boot from cd........error loading operating system"
anyone else suffered this and managed to get around it ? this happens "everytime"
so the next thing was to try the 200gig even though it was not recognised as 200gig (137) and install xp so i done exactly the same as above and everything went fine xp installed no problem. however i don't want xp on this drive as i do not want to partition it and it is too much messing round to get windows to recognise its true size.
the 200gig is a diamondmax +10 ncq 7200rpm sata/150 it has no molex and no jumper place on it.
the 120 is a diamondmax +9 7200rpm sata/150 now this drive has a molex plug and a jumper place like an ordinary drive, it also has a sata power point and sata connection point. it look exactly like an ide drive with ide plug pulled off and sata point put on it  i thought sata's did not need jumpers ?
another thing i have noticed....in your system tray you have an icon like a little grey box with a green arrow above it that you use to safely remove hardware like usb stuff etc my drive shows up in there ?
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...orbog/sata1.jpg
anyone got a sata 120 gig as a boot drive ? what make do you have ?
    my pc spec is
    msi k8n neo2 mobo
    1 gig dual channel ram
    amd 64bit 3200 winchester cpu
    antec neopoer 480w psu
    plenty cooloing
    msi 6600gt 128mb graphic card
using ide drive at the mo
hope this makes sense, thanks for any advice
forgot to add the 120 works fine as generic storage drive just can't get an o/s onto it.

Just threw that into the discussion to see if it would lead anywhere. I'm using Hitachi sata drives and they are the same as the IDE drive with an added chip foir the sata (think that is why they still have the old style power connection along with the sata connection)
my system's based on the same mobo (k8n neo4) with only one Hitachi80GB sataII hdd... and i have the same trouble like 'gravies': i'd get windows to start install (with help of drivers off floppy; by F6) but when it reboots to actually set up the system it hangs... not recognizing the boot files written on my SATAdrive = or the drive itself...
Did you somebody resolve this problem?
It's driving me crazy already 4 looong days...  (first i also had faulty floppy../
    thx,

  • I have a biohd-2 errorv on my Pavilion p6130y, I suspect the sata controller?

I have a biohd-2 errorv on my Pavilion p6130y, I suspect the sata controller? Ias there a fix?

Same problem here, there's nothing wrong with HDD, checked it on other PC.
I'm trying mcguyver66 's solution if it works:
    01-28-2012 04:32 AM
I had the same problem with my HP Pavalion m9580nl.
Bios didn't 'see' any kind of device, no HDD and no cd/dvd-rom.
I followed the manual how to deal with this problem but it didn't bring me the solution.
The diagnostic test mentioned my WDC-HDD with error code BIOHD-2, but in the bios resetting it (F5) to standart values was no solution at all. I did everything the guys from HP suggested here on this forum but that wasn't the solution at all.
And I was supprised with all the stupid advises I've read told to people who clearly told what their problem was and who was advised to buy some kind ofe recovery kit. And that didn't work. Of course it didn't!!!
    The problem is in the bios itself. So I solved the problem with these steps;
    1. disconnect your computer from all the power cords.
    2. open the cover and remove the main power cable from the motherboard.
    3. remove the data and power cables from your HDD's (cd/dvd-rom dousn't matter)
    4. remove the graphics card (nescessary to reach the bios-battery easily)
    5. pull out the bios battery.
    6. Don't touch your pc for at least 12 hours! To be sure the bios is reset.
    7. Reconnect everything you disconnected as discribed above.
    8. boot up and it runs again

  • IRQ and SATA HD problems hangs computer

I tried installing AL 0.7 on my desktop. It has a Asus a7n8x-deluxe motherboard with one IDE HD and one SATA HD. It uses the Silicon Image chip for SATA. During the installation boot up process, the kernel detects the SATA drive but it later hangs when sending some commands to it and I have to reboot the computer by turning the power off then on.
I read a couple of other threads and have come to understand that I have to recompile the kernel. I'm new at linux so, what options should I enable or disable when compiling the kernel? Booting with arch-noscsi bypasses the problem but, I can't mount the sata drive.

I have a Maxtor 6 Y120M0 SATA drive but, I don't think it's the drive that's giving me a problem when installing AL 0.7.  I booted up with AL 0.6 install cd and same problem occurs but, it doesn't hang like in 0.7.  Here are some of the things that occur when booting up AL 0.6
    1. Kernel recognizes SATA drive that uses Silicon Image chipset.
    2. IRQ 11 is disabled (don't know exactly why). This occurs in 0.7 and 0.6.
    3. The kernel tries scanning hdg.
Scanning hdg takes some time. At this point, in AL 0.6 it does this 2x and because it can't find anything gives up and continues with boot up process. I believe that scanning of hdg also occurs in AL 0.7 but, instead of giving up and continuing with boot up it hangs.
Are there some kernel options I can pass at boot up to disable scanning of hdg? Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this problem? I don't want to stick with AL 0.6 b/c I'm afraid same problem will occur when kernel is upgraded when I send comman pacman -Syu.

  • PM8M-V SATA HD Problems

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and really need the help of some more experienced IT people.
Here is the scenario, I had a 875P Neo (MS-6758) which I was loving, until it decided to overheat and burn out the 4-pin power connector, the motherboard as a result died. The upshot of it was that I had to replace the board (not ready to fork out for a new system after 2 years) with a PM8M-V. I had the machine running Windows XP on a 200GB SATA Samsung HD (which for some reason would only ever recognise 137GB - What's with that?). I now want to do the same with the new motherboard, but I cannot for the life of me, get this machine to begin to recognise the SATA drive.
I have searched through the forum for other similar issues (3 pages worth), but still no joy. I have contacted MSI to see if they can give me a step-by-step walkthrough of how to get the bios to recognise the hard drive, but as yet haven't had a reply.
So with a machine sitting there doing nothing (well not exactly nothing, I did manage to get a WD 120GB HD to work through IDE port), and needing to access files from the SATA drive (did not have any warning or enough time to backup the files on it), I am appealing to anyone in the IT Community who has this board (or similar problem) to help me go through step-by-step what I need to do to get things working.
    Thanks in advance.

    hello welcome to forum.
you will need latest BIOS version for your mainboard which add  LBA 48bit support. (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=434&kind=1)
    ver 2.4:
    - BIOS reported incorrect CPU temperature.
    - Support HDD size over 136.9GB.
also ensure your XP installation is XP with SP2 included.
update mainboard BIOS to 2.4 version, and use XP SP2 CD installation your HDD should be detected as full size.
about pin burning, i have suspect low quality PSU. suggest to replace your PSU with quality one and powerfull enough to ensure stable work and prevent damage to components.
IF the user moved a HD from a working system to another MOTHERBOARD, then FLASHING the BIOS and upgrading to SP2 DOESNT help to regain thier sys AS IS.
THE first thing that needs to be confirmed IS this is a HD [ with a working operating system]  that was moved.
