Two 17" monitors vs one 22" w/ FX 5200

I'm currently running Final Cut Studio 2 on a Dual 2.0 G5, 2.5 GB RAM.
My graphics card is the GeForce FX 5200 w/ 17" LCD monitor.
The machine runs FCP, DVDSP, and ProTools (no Motion or Color). I edit a mix of DV, HDV, and DVCProHD.
I want to upgrade to two 17" monitors or one 22" widescreen monitor. (Would like to spend $300-$400 max)
What's the better choice?
If I go with two displays should I upgrade to a better video card (5200 is only 64MB VRAM)?
Thanks for any advice!

I vote one of the larger. 17" displays, even two of them side-by-side, are simply too small.
I buy all of our displays from Dell. They're great quality and they're very inexpensive.
This 22" model, for example, is only $269.

  • Simulating two virtual monitors on one physical monitor

Is there a application or system extension to allow simulating two virtual monitors on one physical graphic card output?
The origin of the problem comes from the wish to drive two external displays from a macbook pro. (without USB driver!!)
The only solution is to use Matrox Interfaces that tell the system that one big screen is pluged to the grafic card. So the Graphic card puts out a signal for a big widescreen dispaly. The Matrox splitt it up the two physical monitors.
The problem is that dual screen applications like Aperture or apples color don`t work with floating windows and no window snapping works good etc.
So a system extension or thired party application must split the one big display coming from the matrox in two virtual displays that are like the original two.
It is a shame that apple don`t provide this functionality (two external monitors) on their high end laptops. They may loose their attention on the pro user and keep on focus on the dummy Iuser. Unfortunately this means a reduction of quality in their high end products.
Thanks for answering that wired question!

The only thing akin to what you want in OS X is Spaces (System Preferences) which can be used to set up virtual screens. I don't know if it's what you are looking for. I'm not aware of any such third-party utility although you can search for one at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
I suppose there may also be a commercial product around, but I don't know of one. Matrox makes a hardware add-on for having multiple monitors on a laptop, but I don't know if they have a utility such as you have described. You may find something doing a Google search.

  • Two Mini Mac and One Monitor

    Hey everyone,
Whats the best one to do? I have two mini mac and one monitor with a WIRELESS (Bluetooth) keyboard and mouse...
    Should I get a KVM or Network,etc?
Or what is the best advice for me to get?
Im using one Mini Mac for work just as Photoshop and Lightroom ONLY,
Other mini mac for play around, download, internet search, etc
both 10.4.11 BUT will get Snow Leopard soon...
    1.66 Ghz Inter Core Duo
    and
cant remember the other Ghz as its shut down at the moment but higher then 1.66Ghz, Inter Core Duo
    Johnny

...with a WIRELESS (Bluetooth) keyboard and mouse...
Do you have a separate keyboard & mouse for the other Mac? Bluetooth keyboards and mice normally can only be paired to one device and since the Bluetooth receiver is built-in to the Macs, you normally can't attach your Bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse to a KVM. (If you have a non-Bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse with it's own dedicated receiver, then it's possible to use that with a USB KVM. But those are mostly PC keyboards/mice so most Mac people don't have such.)
So that basically eliminates KVM as a sharing device for you. Leaving just something like screen sharing to remote control one of the Macs. You probably will not like the way Photoshop and Lightroom work over screen sharing, so remote control just the "internet only" Mac, not the Photoshop Mac.

  • How do I use two external monitors with my laptop?

I have a new Pavilion dm4-301 d cl Entertainment PC.   My OS is Windows 7.   I am used to using two external monitors with a docking station.   This new laptop does not have a docking station.  What do I need to get  to use two external monitors?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming.  HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

We have numeric codes at each level above item which I represents the sort order (the number in parentheses at each level), and the items themselves should be sorted according to item number. I have implemented this (level code/item number) as an attribute in AWM making this the default sort order. However, as item is the lowest level in each hierarchy, I have only been able to list the items under the correct level in one hierarchy. As soon as I drill using the other hierarchy, the levels above item are sorted correctly, but the items appear at very odd places...
The AWM documentation states that if default order is not selected on any attribute, hierarchies are sorted in the order they are created. Is there a way to control this order?
Any input will be greatly appreciated!

  • How do I connect my 2010 Mac Book Pro to two HDMI Monitors?

    Hi All,
I currently have a 2010 Mac Book Pro (Non Retina) which has only one MiniDisplay Port. I am trying to connect it to two HDMI Monitors. How do I do this? I originally was going to buy a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI Adapter and a HDMI Splitter, but won't that show the exact same thing on both displays? Thanks.

If you can connect each computer to the Internet at the same time without swapping cables, you have all the infrastructure in place for File Sharing.
    On your Mac,
System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing can be used to "Share" [read: "make available to others"]
OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a Windows computer to share files with Mac users
If you decide to connect an external Hard drive:
The PC does not believe there are any other Operating Systems, so it cannot read Mac OS X files.
The Mac can read and write FAT and exFat, and can Read but not write NTFS.

The Satellite P100 comes with two external monitor port. A VGA and a DVI. Can you have have two external monitor working at the same time? Can you have two external monitor as well as your internal display working at the same time (for a total of 3 display at the same time?
Here is what I have confirm:
Internal display + DVI connector display
    OR
Internal display + VGA connector display
    Is it possible to have:
DVI connector display + VGA connector display?
    OR
DVI connector display + VGA connector display + Internal display?

As far as I know this is not possible and you can use either DVI or VGA port.
For signal output can be used only one port for external display.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite and Windows 8.1 Pro in Bootcamp, can no longer drive retina display and two external monitors simultaneously?

    Greetings
I just upgraded from Mountain Lion and Windows 7 Ultimate (Bootcamp) to Yosemite and Windows 8.1 Pro on a late 2012 MBP 13" Retina. Prior to the upgrades, I was able to drive the retina panel and two external monitors simultaneously when operating directly in Bootcamp. Now, I can only drive 2 of the 3 simultaneously though all three are recognized under Graphic Properties. I simply cannot find any option or profile under Graphics Properties or Options or Personalization to run all three screens.
My hardware hasn't changed and this worked prior to the updates. I have no issue on the Mac OSX can run all three. I also have no issue doing it in Windows under Parallels Desktop 10. It is just when I boot directly into Bootcamp that this happens. What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    G.

Great point, Loner T.  It was late when I was working and I thought about this afterwards also.
The issue was that in Windows=>Control Panel=>Display, under "Change Display Settings", the three screens showed but "Extend Display"  was not selected for one of the screens. It was simply off. I can't believe I danced around this w/o picking it up sooner. In fact, it has happened in the past that for some reason a display loses this setting.
As an aside, thanks again for all of your help and terrific input to upgrade both the Mac and Windows operating systems. As I was going from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8.1 Pro, one thing I did come across that made life much easier was to upgrade first to Windows 8 so I could keep my apps. The jump from 7 to 8.1 would otherwise migrate my personal files, but not programs and require a lot of time to reinstall all. This was completely avoided by going to Windows 8 first.
Thanks, again, and very much appreciate the work that you do here.
    Best,
    G.

  • Twist: Can't make two external monitors work

I'm trying to get two external monitors to work with my twist. One is connected via mini-HDMI, the other using a Thunderbolt adapter (I've tried adapters for VGA, DVI and HDMI - same result). Only one external monitor (mini HMDI) works, although Win8 detects both (lists the grayed-out monitor make/model correctly). If I unplug either monitor, the other works fine.
Note that I am using an Apple Thunderbolt adapter, not the Lenovo Mini DisplayPort adapter. I use the Thunderbolt adapter with one monitor all the time.
I have two monitors working at another location; Mini DisplayPort -> VGA and USB -> SVGA.
Is the problem that I'm not using the Lenovo adapter, or is this never going to work? Thanks.

The Twist should support internal LCD + one external LCD (or 2 external LCD with displayport splitter) on at the same time.

  • X240 (Win 8.1) w/ Ultra Dock and two external monitors connected via DisplayPort problem

I'm having trouble making this combination work. This Ultra Dock does have two DP connectors, computer sees both external monitors (HP ZR24w) but I cannot get any picture on both at the same time using DP. Sometimes one display does work, but that is not always working.
When I connect same monitors via VGA/DSUB and DP (with Lenovo DPtoDVI converter) I can get this to work - both same time - , but I'd prefer them both digital and both native DP as both monitors do have that port.
Ultra Dock does already have the latest firmware and this problem seems to not relate to the flickering problem with T440 etc. X240 is also running latest UEFI/BIOS and I've also tried latest Intel Beta display driver, no effect.

Let me start by saying that the internal and both external monitors work simultaneously. However, getting to that state is the problem.
I can boot successfully with the laptop in the dock with 1) just the internal monitor, or 2) the internal and one external monitor connected.
However, if I try to boot with both monitors connected via DVI, the following happens:
Windows logon screen appears -- but there is no cursor on the screen
I enter the password and the login continues for 30-60 seconds, then
Blue screen SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION for nvlddmkm.sys with STOP x0000003B
Lenovo has replaced the dock with no change in behavior.
    Drivers and BIOS are current.
Most recent change was to set BIOS so Win 7 automatically detects Nvidia Optimus.
At this point, my best workaround is to disconnect one external monitor whenever I need to reboot, and then connect it again after everything is runing. Not terrible... but it really shouldn't be necessary. Any suggestions?
If you want to drive the monitors in the manner stated, the BIOS Display property must be set to Discrete and the auto detection below it must be disabled.

  • Two External Monitors - HP laptop G71 343US

    Good afternoon,
I have the aforementioned  hp laptop G71 343US.  I work from home and I use a single external monitor almost everyday connected via the VGA port.  I happen to come across another external monitor and was looking on amazon at some parts, and on youtube for videos, etc.
Bottom line question, can I hook up two different external monitors AND use my laptop screen?  can this be done in such a manner than the desktop is extended and not duplicated?
I assumed that the VGA splitter i saw on amazon would create a duplicate display on both externals, but i saw videos proclaiming that a usb to VGA adapter could be used to create the desired effect.  further investigation revealed that this is a "displayport" to VGA adapter.... i don't even know if i have a 'displayport.'
anyway i'm a little confused and couldn't find a concrete answer to my question.  so i came here
    thanks for your input!

    Hi,
I've got a setup in front of me now using one of my old laptops (nearly 5 yrs old), 2 full HD monitors and one USB dock
The following image show my laptop screen (#1) has my Yahoo (Yahoo7 in my country) homepage, left screen (#2) is a Photoshop session and right screen (#3) has my normal desktop background which is my grandson.
In short: you can, I don't have HP device to test but using a Lenovo DisplayLink with 2 DVI ports from work.

  • Two external monitors + ethernet on the Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013)

The new MacBook Pro 13" retina have 2 thunderbolt connectors and one HDMI but no ethernet port (how pro is that?).
As the title of this post suggest, I want to drive two external monitors as well as an ethernet port.
1.) Is there a dock that woudl allow such setup out of the box?
    -OR-
2.) Using the Macbook Pro's two thunderbolt ports and the following adapters:
    - Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet,
    - Mini DisplayPort to DVI (is this actually thunderbolt compat?).
Can once of the thunderbolt connector be splitted or chanied to drive etiher: two screens or one screen + ethernet?
Or would I also need to use the HDMI port in such case? If so is there any performance difference between the Macbook Pro's HDMI port and the thunderbolt ports? Can all these be run concurrently i.e. thunderbolt display and the HDMI port?
The monitors both have DVI-D connectors.

Thunderbolt expansion docks are beginning to appear.  "They ain't cheap."   This one would support what you want to do ... Belkin Express Dock  (using both Thunderbolt ports on your MBP)
Thunderbolt devices can be daisy-chained however I don't believe that means it will support 2 displays on the same chain.
miniDisplayPort and Thunderbolt are co-compatible.   You can plug a miniDisplayPort cable into the Thunderbolt port in order to connect a display.
DVI and HDMI are co-compatible.  You should only need an appropriate cable to connect the display to the MBP's HDMI port.
