Two 4th gen iPods, only one works via firewire

I've had my 4th gen iPod for a while now. I just got my wife one over craigslist. Hers came with a firewire connection. However, only my Ipod will sync with our iMac 10.4.11, iTunes 7.6. Her ipod only charges. I know that after the 4th gen's firewire was no longer available for syncing. Why would only one of the two ipods work with firewire when they are identical? (both running ipod software 3.1.1)

It looks like the answer to my problems was a bad hard drive. Sent it to the ipod doctor and after a $159 repair, I'm back in business http://nycipoddoctor.com/

  • 4th Gen iPod only works with usb - freezes with firewire

After a recent iTunes upgrade my my 40 gig Gen 4 iPod started locking up and freezing my G4 and G5 when using firewire to transfer files until I unplugged the iPod.
I found several threads from people with similar problems and tried all the suggestions (with the exception of "dropping" the iPod.)
After a week of troubleshooting, I'm finally successfully transferring files using USB 1 - it also freezes with USB 2.
This is the troubleshooting process I went through to arrive at the above conclusion:
    First did the 5Rs.
    Deleted and reinstalled iTunes
Followed Mitch's suggestion for using Disk Tools to reformat the iPod (successfully)
Ran some of the internal iPode diagnostic test and they indicate no problem with the drive or USB or firewire.
Ruled out iTunes as the problem because I was having the same problem when I closed iTunes and just copied files directly from the desktop to the iPod. When doing the transfers in the Finder, the Finder would freeze/lock up and I'd have to reboot.
Rules out the computer because the same thing happened with both G4 & G5.
Ruled out something in the user profile because the same thing happened when using my wife's account.
Ruled out the firewire cables because the same thing happened with two different firewire cables.
I've seen several posts from people with similar problems but no solutions. Has anyone cracked this nut? It takes FOREVER to update 40 gig with USB

  • 4th Gen Ipod only charges with power block

I have 3 different 4th gen ipods, 2 of which will charge up when hooked to USB, firewire, and both my aftermarket Imode stereo and wireless car transmitter/charger.
One of the 4th gen ipods I have will only change when hooked with a firewire cable to the power block. It will not charge in any other manner. Is this a problem with the circuitry inside the ipod or something else? The battery seems to hold its charge just fine otherwise.

One of the 4th gen ipods I have will only change when hooked with a firewire cable
Are you sure it is also a 4G iPod? A 3G iPod (does not have click wheel) can only charge using FireWire. If they are all identical looking 4G iPods (with click wheel), the one that does not change over USB probably has a problem with it's USB charging connection. You could try using the Restore button in iTunes, but it seems like a hardware issue.

  • 2 ipods only one works

My son and daughter both have ipod nanos. One works and is recognized in itunes. The other is not recognized by our computer or her laptop. I have reset it as far as I know and tried it with both cords. It is not the USB because the other works in it. The thing is charged and will play music! I need help I hate this little thing!!!

  • My brand new 4th gen iPod only plays the first few seconds of my songs.

I have restored to factory settings 3xs and have updated iTunes. What can I do?

I've been having this same problem since I installed version 8.1 of iTunes. I have tried EVERYTHING to no avail, oh wait, things got worse. At first it was only songs I had downloaded since installing version 8 but now songs I rip from my CDs are skipping as well.
The only songs I have on my iPod are from iTunes or my own CDs.
I've tried the 5Rs more times than I can count now, I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime multiple times, I've recreated my iTunes library multiple times, I've tried setting Gapless to yes for all songs, I've tried setting Gapless to no for all songs, nothing worked.
I was beginning to think it was my iPod's hard drive but it's not. I have an older version of iTunes on my laptop (8.0.2.20) so I loaded the same songs that were skipping when sync'd from ver 8.1. They don't skip when sync'd from the older version of iTunes.
Either something is wrong w/ 8.1.1.10 and my 5g iPod and 2g Nano or something happened during the install and I haven't been able to completely wipe iTunes and Quicktime before reinstalling them.
ps: I forgot to add that the songs play fine in iTunes and when I play them from the iPod through iTunes.

  • 4th gen ipod touch wont work after 6.0 update? stuck on boot screen

last night i downloaded the new os for apple. i plug it in to the comp and its in recovery mode? anyway then i install the update and restore, (that was the only option i could do) but now my ipod after restarting wont go past the boot menu, also my computer no longer recognizes my ipod any help anywhere?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 3rd Gen iPod won't mount via firewire - any ideas?

After working for a brief spell when I first hooked it up, the progress bar would freeze while I was trying to copy files across to the HD. I unplugged, reset the iPod and tried it in my old clamshell iBook, where it worked fine again.
I tried resetting the PMU on the Macbook, but this only made things worse - the iPod now refuses to mount, despite still working fine on my old iBook. Tried resetting PRAM too but no difference.
Do I have a duff port? Or could it be an issue with 10.4.6 on the Macbook?

I tried a JVC digital handycam while on the phone to AppleCare, which it recognised in iChat, and showed a live picture in iMovie. I don't know how I would check for consistency with this device, but it seemed to be working ok.
I'm connecting via a dock but have also tried connecting direct - all official Apple cables. No difference.
I'm now noticing new behaviour. When I plug the iPod in it mounts very briefly, triggers iTunes, then unmounts. It stays charging from the Macbook's firewire port, but the 'do not disconnect' disappears and I can use it as if it was only connected to AC. This is reproducible, and is the same if I turn off the launch iTunes option.
Once again, it works flawlessly with the old iBook.
I'm almost tempted to go down to the Apple Store in Regent St. and plug my iPod into a Macbook there to rule out software - unless you have any other suggestions?
    Thanks for your continued support.

  • 4th gen ipod stopped working

I have a 4th gen ipod that stopped working. I had it playing in the car on a charger, after making a stop it wouldn't work again. It did flicker for a few minutes, but no sound. It won't charge and the computer won't recognize it and it won't reset. So how do I determine if it is the battery or the logic board?

Need some additional info to help.
When you connect it to your Mac, does it show the iPod icon on the desktop?
What does it show on the iPod screen when you connect to the Mac?
if it shows the "Don't disconnected" screen, then it is your battery is dead. leave it charging for about 4 hours and Reset the iPod, to see if iTunes sense it, while still connected.
If you Ipod works after charging 4 hours, then your car docking system charger is kaput!
or else time to replace the iPod battery.
    Good luck!

  • Help needed with 4th gen. iPod shuffle and "reshuffling" music

I have a silver 4th gen. iPod shuffle that works well for me.     I had 196 songs on it and in the last couple of days, I added 14 more.  Now, I have 210 songs on it.  Cool.  The issue I have is NONE of the new songs play. I do get a good mixture of music and it's pretty random but in the 7 or so hours I listened to my iPod today at work, NONE of the new songs I added played at all.  I would guess at least one of the new songs would have played but none did.
I found the iPod manual online in PDF format and read the instructions for "reshuffling" the iPod, but I'm not sure that worked.   So, here are my questions:
When I add new music, must I manually "reshuffle" the songs manually or should that happen automatically?
When I "reshuffle" the songs, I follow these steps:  "To reshuffle songs, slide the three-way switch from shuffle (icon) to play in order (icon) and back to
shuffle again.  Must the iPod be playing music when I do this or does that matter?
I manually add the music to the iPod and don't automatically sync anything, nor do I have any playlists.
    Thanks in advance!
    Peace...

You may want to play the shuffle with the switch in the middle play-in-order position.  Then, when you play songs from the All Songs list, they play in alphabetical order.  That should make it easier to confirm that songs on the new batch does actually play (because the order is not random).
Also, there are only about 200 songs on there, so keep hitting Next until hear one of the new songs.  If you get back to the first song without hearing one of the new songs, something is wrong.
It should not matter when you do the reshuffle step, whether the iPod is playing or not.
Have you checked using iTunes, to confirm the new batch of songs is on the shuffle?  If the iTunes sidebar is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  The shuffle appears in the sidebar, under DEVICES.  Click the small triangle to the left of the shuffle's name, to drop down its content list (indented below the shuffle) Click on Music there.  The list of songs on the shuffle is shown to the right.  Are those 14 new songs on the list?

  • 4th gen iPod won't load songs; my 5th gen and Nano will...

I have a 4th gen iPod that was working with no problems until my girlfriend unintentionally erased all the songs when she installed iTunes on a new computer and connected the iPod. In the meantime, I acquired a 5th gen iPod and Nano and have been using them without event on my computer.
When I tried re-connecting the 4th gen iPod to my computer, the songs wouldn't load. I've updated iTunes and the iPod software to the latest versions and still can't get it to work. I've tried restoring the iPod numerous times and when I try to sync it (either manually or automatically) it says "the required file cannot be found". It has sometimes said "an unknown error has occured (-69)" which would mean something is wrong with the files themselves, but then why would my other iPods work fine using the same files?
What's weird is that the iPod won't load any of the songs but will load the names of playlists.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on here?
    Thanks
      Windows XP

    Hi, thanks for the response.
Yes, I did try the 5 R's a few times without much success, it seems.
And I did research the (-69) error message which on the site says,
"This error occurs when iTunes tries to send files to your iPod, but a file (or files) is unusable (something is wrong with it."
But like I said, I'm confused as to why one iPod would be happy with the files but my other one wouldn't. I've tried choosing random songs to put on the iPod (thinking maybe my first song in my library is corrupted) but no songs seem to load. The other error message I get is "The required file cannot be found". But why can my other iPods find them?

In more specific terms. The apps that came on the iPod like the weather and maps and whatnot have been working flawlessly. It's just when I download an app and then disconnect from wifi it's almost like I'm on a timer until the app stops working. It acts like it wants to open, the screen flashes black then resets to the home pages. I've tried all of the basic fixes, rebooting, reseting, uninstalling then reinstalling. But like in my...long...question, the reinstalling option only seems to be a temporary fix. I just recently downloaded the 5.1.1 udate (I think that's what it was) does that have anything to do with it, or am I just derpy when it comes to iPods?

    Try the other suggestions here:

    Then try a restore.

  • Does anyone know if the Toshiba 240GB 1.8" MK2431GAH Hard Drive will work in the 4th gen iPod Photo?

I've been considering buying a Toshiba 240GB 1.8" MK2431GAH Hard Drive for my 4th gen iPod Photo.  Does anyone have any information about this product and if it will work?  Would I have to also get a thicker back panel?

And the reason is because the connector on the later versions of the Toshiba 1.8-inch hard drives is different.
The older type that works with your iPod goes up to 60GB.  There are two physical sizes, base on whether the drive has one platter or two platters, and these correspond to the "thick" and "thin" iPod back panels.
I have a 4th gen iPod with a standard compact flash card for storage, which replaces the hard drive through an adapter.  I believe it's this one, or one like it
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Compact-Flash-CF-SSD-To-Toshiba-IPod-1-8-inch-Adapte r-Black-/121174875639
It fits in the "thin" back panel.  The only modification I needed to make was bending over the pair of "jumper" pins that sets it for master or slave (needs to be set for master).  Currently, I only have an 8GB CF card in there, but it works great.  At some point, I may get a 64GB CF card for it.  Solid state storage is much better than a hard drive for everything except sheer capacity.

  • Older Remote Model A1018 doesn't work on 4th Gen Ipod

Hello, I have a 4th Gen iPod and use a wired remote (model # A1018) and while I can hear the ipod, none of the buttons on the remote work anymore. The iPod has version 3.1.1 on it. Has anyone run into this or have any ideas to remedy?

Not a hardware problem at all.  The existing headphones work... the earbuds are gertting a bit ragged thus I ordered new ones... 2 pair... and both do not work:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/261053896227?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m149 7.l2649
They do however work in the iPhone 4s which indicates a compatibility issue.
Didn't mean to infer anything nefarious... just to point out that emillang must be experiencing the same problem as I am.
The only other solution I see is to buy a dongle or a case with integrated controls:
