Two Column Text Flow Problem

Aside from Pages not importing Word (from a Mac) properly when there's columns involved I have another column problem.
I'd like to find a way to make a document that has two equal side-by-side columns, lets call them Column A on the left and Column B on the right. So when I start typing in Column B on the right and reach the bottom of the page the text continues on that new page in Column B.
As far as I can tell it's impossible to do this as every time I reach the end of a page, the text jumps to the left into Column A. Is there any way to set it up so when you type in one column pages automatically jumps to that same column on the next page without having to add section or layout or column breaks for every single page?
This is a bit of a nightmare. It seems Pages can't do a simple two column document as it insists on linking them together for every new page it creates as you type text.
Can anyone help me?

There are definitely some liimitations in how Pages handles its flow of information. I dislike the fact that once you have placed your pages the way you want from the pages within a template there is no way of having the text automatically flow from one to the next (irritating since some of my templates are designed to be journals)
Pages won't do what you want. I am sure there are programs which are better suited to do so because they are designed for that particular market. I thank you, however for not stamping your feet and demanding that it be the very next thing for them to accomplish on their growing list of things to do next.
(and I tried a few different things, hoping to figure out a way to do this. One of which was to design a templlate which was half the width of a sheet of paper. It was determining what was placed on the second side which was difficult.)
now, of course, depending on how long your document was going to be you could try something different by making an infinitely long sheet of paper. At every point where the header would be you just incorporated a text box or shape with a wrap so your text would skip down to the next virtual page.
Of course, this sounds like far more work, and distracting to the natural creation process of a writer. Find the software which removes itself from your creative juices and lets you concentrate on being the awsome writer you are.
Just my 2¢ CDN (about half a penny US.)

  • Two-Column text flow

I would like to create a body of text arranged in two columns so that text that is entered into the first column will, when first col. is full,  continue into the second, and when that is full, into a new page, etc. Would you please show me how to set up my page to make this happen.
At present I am having to manually move text around. Wondering if there is a way to have inDesign manage this for me automatically.

Nope, the correct answer would depend on the version, what we don't know.
Your answer would be the best practice for InDesign CS4 and older.
With InDesign CS5 and later it is better to set up the master with a single column and set up object styles for the text frames with 2 or more columns. It is helpful to put normal ruler guides to the column edges.
Span column would not work in 2 single columns, only with a single text frame.

  • Creating a two columns text reflow

    Hi
I'm trying to create a two column page which needs to get data that will fill the columns. Upon filling one column, the text will need to reflow to the next one (as much as a two column text frame in a layout program does).
Is it possible in a Designer ES? (version 8.2.1.5161.1.566259) What is the best practice to do so?
    Thanks,
    Yossi Maoz

Are you trying to make it an interactive form or are you going to merge data onto the template and make a print form? In either case I modified your sample. The root Page subform must be set to flowed. You do not need a field in the second content area. I resized the 1st field to make it easier. I changed the layout to allow the field to expand in the Y direction (on the layout tab). I cahnged the Form Properties/Preview to Interactive so that I coudl enter in data. Now when the field fills up scroll bars will appear and when you tab off of the field the field will be redrawn to its actual size. Enter in enough data to case a page overflow and you will see the second column fill up.

  • Importing two-column text from Pages

I've produced several successful calendars and books using the iPhoto service in the past couple of years, but one thing has me defeated.
So far, I have used Pages to create text, then style it the way I want, and finally cut and paste it into the book project. It works perfectly. So far, so good.
Now I want to do two-column text pages, instead of a full-width single-column layout, but I can't find a way to do it.
I have tried exporting the two-column set out of Pages as a pdf, then using the Import command in iPhoto, but it is greyed out in the navigation window. No go.
    Any ideas?

Do a Print to PDF of the Pages layout and select the Send PDF to iPhoto option. That will create a jpg image of the page which can be added to a full page layout in the Book. Here are a couple of crude examples of that from a Word document: Portrait oriented - Landscape oriented.
Of course my example is single column but with a two column layout in Pages and in the landscape mode it would work just as well.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Horizontal paragraph rule across two-column text frame?

    Hi,
as the title suggests, how do i get a horizontal rule to run across a two-column text frame?
    I have either had the rule just apply to the entered text; had a gap where the column gutter is;
or I have had to set the column gutter to 0mm/px and manually set carriage returns to give the impression of a gutter.
Surely there is a better way?
I'll attach a jpeg of my various options.
Hope I've been clear-enough. All help is appreciated.
    Cheers, Matt

You can put the rule in a paragraph which is spanning a columns.
Or you can extend the paragraph rules by inputing minus values to left and right (e.g. -5mm)
Or you can use a table instead.
Or you can use negative left and right intend for the text but extend the rule to the end of the frame.
Never set a carriage return manually.

  • Text flow into one or two column text boxes depending on the number of text lines

    Question InDesignCS3
Is it possible to let text flow into one or two column textboxes depending on the number of text lines?
    Example 1)
    --Default text box--|
    | Text line 1 |
    | Text line 2 |
    | Text line 3 |
    | Text line 4 |
    ------------------- |
If there are more than 4 text lines in the in the text box, this box has to become a two column box. like example 2
    example 2)
    |Text line 1 | Text line 4 |
    |Text line 2 | Text line 5 |
    |Text line 3 | Text line 6 |

    if (myTextFrame.lines > 4) {
    myTextFrame.textFramePreferences.textColumnCount = 2;
    } else {
    myTextFrame.textFramePreferences.textColumnCount = 1;

  • Two column text box with header

I have a text box that is set to flow as two columns. The beginning of the text box has a header then a list of bulleted items. My problem is that when the text flows to the second column, it is set at the top (in-line with the header). What I would like is to do something like set a top margin just for the second column so it will line up with the body text from the first column. Is there an easy way to do this or should I just use two text boxes and position the second box where I want it?

Simplest is to use two text boxes.
Dave Saunders has a script (http://pdsassoc.com/index.php?Nav=downs&Ban=Downloads&Info=downloads.html) that can do it with one text box by putting your head in a one-column table that intrudes into the second column. I've never used his script, and I see his website says CS and CS2, so I'm not sure if it would work with your version.
You could probably achieve what you want (because I see you don't actually need the head to straddle, just the texts to top align with each other) by forcing a huge leading on one character in a frame that's set to First Baseline Offset by Leading.

  • Columns & Text Flow Query

My document set-up is two columns. I want to insert images with captions in the left column and text-only in the right column.
I would like to have right column text contain itself within the right column. Ditto for the left column. I do not want continuous right column text to flow into the top of the left column on the next page.
I have tried many things but nothing works. If I set up with a narrow right column, I can get the images in but cannot type any text. I am sure that I do have to have two columns but I want them separate from each other.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Dennis,
Sorry I'm late on this. Thought I would get an e-mail notice of your post. Guess that is what 'Subscribe' is about.
Yes, I checked out the Pages Help and was good to go. I do not, however, seem to get the new, continuous box to work thus far. I am assuming, correctly or incorrectly, that the text will flow into the 'linked' text box which will be on a new page. So, I so have to sit down for an hour or so and figure this out. Most of what I am inserting into the text boxes is already written. Anyway, thanks or all of your help. Very nice of you to take your time on this.
OK! Back to the Seahawks. They must, and I mean MUST beat the Panthers. Their coach, in my opinion, is the essence of arrogance. I don't mind the best team winning, after all , that is what it's all about, but he just seems to relish the other teams loss. They destroyed the Chicago Bears, but I never believed that the Bears were intense enough to be a real contender.
I may be from Chicago, but my heart was with the Patriots to take it all. If their ball carrier's could have concentrated on doing what they were supposed to do - catch and then hold on to the ball - they could have made a game of it. However, I was born in New Mexico, so the Bronco's are okay as well. That's the problem when you like too many teams. I like the Seahawk coach because I like Green Bay and he did an awesome job while he was there. I know, I should get a job as a sports announcer. Ok! Enough of this.
Thanks again, and I'll be rooting for the Seahawks this Sunday. And the Bronco's.
    Regards,

  • Two column text wrap

I'm using CS5 and I'm preparing a book that uses two columns. I have some photos that extend from one column into the other. When I wrap text around those photos one of the columns wraps fine but the other column does not. It wraps with a large white space, that is, both columns do not wrap equally. A friend of mine tells me this problem has persisted in previous versions of InDesign.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
this is 100% normal, expected, and nasty behavior.
!? (in particular on the "expected"...)
    Is this area the problem?
What happens if you force some text in the last line of the caption -- say, a Right Indent Tab, and if that's not enough, followed by a [None] colored exclamation mark?

  • Two-column text

This is driving me nuts. It's not that often that I import text into InDesign. I've got two column page formats set up for an index. I'm placing the index text, which is an RTF file, into this two-column format. And, it just boringly splats itself right across the whole page, damn the two columns. What's this about? Why can't imported text adhere to the columns that are set up?
    Thanks,
    Peter

Yeh, I fixed it, finally. Yes, I had to click, click, click in the text frame and make sure I saw a blinking cursor in there. I actually typed in some text and verified that it was wrapping in the first column, not spanning. Then, I placed my file. And, it finally came in right. I guess you just have to be totally sure that your cursor's there in the 2-column textbox. Sometimes when I brought in the text, it literally create another single-column text frame, on top of the two-column one!
    Thanks, everyone.

  • Formula that calculate two columns/text

    Good afternoon Everyone,
I am trying to write a formula (if it exists) that will allow me to look at two different columns of data and calculate 3 pieces of information:
    1. Open items per consultant
    2. Closed items per consultant
    3. Percentage of open items based on total of open and closed items per consultant.
example: I want it to calculate Stacy has x amount of total open items from the list. Here's part of my spreadsheet. The columns (Open Actions, Closed Actions and % Open Actions) will be a seperate table.

    Open items:
    =COUNTIFS(C:C,"Stacy",E:E,"Open")
or use a cell reference with the name "Stacy" - use this if you have a list of names you want to use and want to just copy the formula down to match the list:
    =COUNTIFS(C:C,G2,E:E,"Open")
    Closed items
    =COUNTIFS(C:C,"Stacy",E:E,"Closed")
    Percentages:
    =Cell1/(Cell1 + Cell2)
where Cell1 and 2 are the cells with the formulas.

  • Footnote text flow problem.

My problem is that the footnotes don't split and then the rest of the document will not show in the text frame.  The document has lots of footnotes and a lot of them are long (over 2 pages).  I have the  minimum space set at .125" and Allow Split Footnote checked.  If I make the text block a bigger the next sentence will pull in and the the big gap is gone.  Any ideas on how to get the next sentence to pull in?

I do have keep the first and last 2 line together. If I turn it off, the text still doesn't pull in. If I make the text block a little bigger, the footnote will split.  (see screen shot)

  • 6500 text flow problem

I've just upgraded my firmware and now when I text the words break at the end of line and don't scroll to the next line.

Do you have 'Keep with previous' switched on in the paragraphs on those pages?
Avoiding a last line on the next page is easier with 'Keep line together'. You can find both in 'Keep options' in the paragraph menu.  Also, I find it easier to mark a paragraph with 'Start in next frame'. You don't have to touch the frames that way.

  • CS3 to CS2 text flow problem

I have saved a IND 3 doc as an INX file but when I open it in IND 2 bits of the text have enlarged causing overflow.
    Any idea why?
(tried opening it in IND 3 again and it's fine)
    thanks
    Pete

There's no way to prevent text reflow moving between versions. Those of us at the InDesign Conference learned this week from the engineers that there can be subtle changes in the text composer or in the dictionaries supplied. (Or there could be a bug in the way CS3 saved INX.)
Moral: Stay in the same version if you possibly can.

  • How to make a 2-column text in sapscript via standard text?

Hello ABAP Gurus! I'm having a hard time thinking on how I'm going to display a two-column text in the MAIN window of the form Using Form Painter(se71) and Standard Text (SO10). Let's put it this way, the scenario is like you are formatting a paragraph on MS word in to two columns by Format > Columns > Two. What am I going to do  with this similar situation in SAP? Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks

This is nothing with standard text.
Call READ_TEXT FM and here use two variables ,read first line and move to first variable ,again read second line and move to second variable.
    Thanks
