Two computers, One iPod, One messy problem

I have a G5 computer back at my home, but recently, I decided to move. With the move I bought a new iPod and a MacBook Pro laptop. Before I left I transferred all my songs from my old G5 to my new iPod.
But now that my MacBook Pro has arrived, I've been unable to transfer songs from my iPod to my new MacBook Pro.
What I want is to basically have my new MacBook Pro be the authorized computer to my new iPod (transfer songs, DL songs, fool with my playlists), but I can't do anything like that because I think my old G5 is the only authorized computer for my iPod.
Can anyone help me?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Use the instructions in this article to transfer the music. To authorize a computer to play purchased music, connect it to the Internet and play a song purchased from the iTunes music store in iTunes; you can authorize a maximum of 5 computers. Once authorized, you can transfer music purchased from the iTunes music store to your iPod on your new computer.

Yes, this has been allowed with Adobe applications going back many years.  A program such as Photoshop can legally be installed and activated on two computers at a time for the use of the single licensed user.  You can't install legally on your own and a friend's computer for use by the two different people.  Prior to Creative Cloud, there was an unwritten limit on how many times a given application could be activated, but there is no longer such a limit under CC.  That means you could theoretically install on three or four computers, activating only two at a time, and then deactivating one or both before activating on another computer.

  • Two computers connected to one router, two external IP? How?

Hey Im just playing around with the Remote Desktop and I have two computers connected to a router but when i search for external IP it shows only one of them. Is there a way of distinguishing more computers in one network from outside of the network? THANKS!!!

To connect to more than one computer behind an NAT router, you'll need to have Apple Remote Desktop 3.3.

  • Using Elements 12 on two computers and sharing one catalog.

I want to put my photoshop elements 12 onto my laptop as well as my PC. I would like to know how to be able to share my photos back and forth between the two programs. I also use the Topaz plug in's on the PC and will also install them on the laptop. Let me know how I can do this.

What I suggest is to have the picture files on the external hard drive as well as the catalog folder.
The picture files are no longer on your desktop nor on your laptop, they are on the external drive.
The catalog folder is no longer in the default location on your desktop, it has been moved to the same external drive.
You have PSE installed on your two computers (you are allowed two computers with your Elements license).
When you plug-in the the external drive to any of your computers, the organizer finds the catalog on the external drive and all your picture files.
You can edit and add images to your catalog from any of your computers, the other one will find them when the external drive is plugged in.
How to do this? I suppose you have your picture files on your desktop and also the catalog folder in its default location in the desktop.
You have two external drives; one for backup, the other to hold the pictures and the catalog folder.
The first step is to do a full backup on the backup drive.
Then you do a restore to the second external drive. That will put the pictures and the catalog folder in that drive.
Now, to tell each of your organizers in desktop and laptop where the catalog is, the simplest solution is to plug the external drive to a computer. From the explorer/finder, you locate the catalog folder which holds the database : catalog.pse13db. You double click that file, which will open the organizer in the new catalog. Do the same with the second computer.
As I said in my previous post, it is necessary that the external drive has the same drive letter when plugged in in either computer.

  • Two Questions, 2 ipods one comp, and video organization.

Two questings That I have. One, my wife might be getting another IPOD and just wondering how it all works with hooking up two ipods to one computer. My friend tried hookin his up to mine and it just said something about erasing all he has and putting my library on his. So is it possible to have two different libraries, for two different ipods, on one comp? SECOND question. Is there anyway I can organize the Video area a little better. maybe make another folder or section, you know one for podcast, one for movie trailers, one for featurettes instead of having them all in one spot?

I think you have to go into itunes settings and select update only checked songs or manual update only. Sharing the same computer while managing different music lists between two or more ipods is do-able but a pain. I recommend keeping a seperate computer for each ipod whenever possible. And never delete the music on your computer as that's your first line of backing up defense.
This link might help your folders question but I haven't checked it out yet:

is there a way to have two itunes libraries on one apple tv or must i reconnect every time?

you can link up to five (i believe) iTunes libraries to an TV, however, only one can be a syncing library (1st generation TV) while the others can be streaming only.

  • One iPod, One Computer, One User Account - Need Two Libraries

I have a 60G iPod, but only a 60G internal hard drive on my Windows XP laptop so I can't store all of my iPod's music in the iTunes (version 7) library on my laptop's HDD.
I recently got a 60G external USB HDD, so I'd like to set up two iTunes libraries - one library on my laptop's internal hard drive where I can store a subset of my music & videos and another library on the external hard drive where I can keep everything that is on my iPod.
How can I create a second iTunes library and then switch between the two?
I searched iTunes discussions, but couldn't find an answer to this specific question. I did see a reference to creating a new library (and switching libraries) by holding the shift key down when launching iTunes, but that didn't seem to work (maybe a Mac-only capability?).
Thank you in advance for any help or instructions.
      Windows XP

    Thank you for the suggestion.
I've tried holding the shift key down when I double-click on the iTunes icon to start it, and iTunes starts normally (I tried doing this with the desktop shortcut, I tried it with the iTunes.exe file...). I don't see the expected dialog box that would allow me to create or switch to a library. Any ideas why this wouldn't work?

  • How can I combine two databases, from two computers, to have one combined database of messages?

My old XP computer recently died and I had to build a new Windows 8.1 machine. While I was down I used a laptop as a temporary replacement. Now my new machine is running fine and receiving e-mail, but I now have two databases--one on the new machine and one on the laptop. Both are based on a recent backup, so they are lengthy--except that the new machine's database has a hole in it for the period I was on the laptop and the laptop's database also has gaps. How can I combine two databases into one that includes the messages from both machines?
    Thanks in advance,

Thanks for your reply. My profile folder did not contain any MBOX files. I found them in another folder on another drive. The Import-Export tools simply transferred each folder to the current one as a sub-folder. Then I had to use ctrl-a to select everything in the folder and move them manually to the current folder (such as inbox). Then I could use the other utility you mentioned to remove the duplicates. This had to be done, one folder at a time, to combine each folder. It worked, but I had about thirty-five folders to deal with. The whole process took most of two days to complete. I wish there was a simple way to blend everything together in one action, but I could not find an add-on that would do this.

  • Using two Computers to update one Itunes File on network harddrive

How do I get the itunes files on my buffalo network server 250 gigs) to populate itunes on both computers (not at the same time)? I started to add songs to the server through itunes on my laptop (15 gigs so far). I can find, see and play the music on the desktop. However, Itunes on the desktop is not populated with the music I added with the laptop. I have used the advanced menu on desktop itunes to point to the itune files.

    Here's the deal:
Up until a month ago, I'd have told you that it's impossible. However, iTunes 7 added a new feature which I have not used, but it seems to be what you're looking for.
First, you're going to have to make a common library file. This may require making a new library from, I don't know, because I haven't done it. You can just try moving the library file (it's iTunes Library.itl, and can be found in My Music\iTunes) to the NAS.
Now, when you start iTunes, hold shift until a dialog box appears and asks you which library to use. Point to the one on the NAS. If that library doesn't work (because it was moved) you may hve to go with the option to make a new one.
Do this from both computers, and everything should work.
    A few notes:
I doubt you can run them both at the same time.
There are other things I've forgotten. I'm sure.
    Back up. Always.
Ask any other questions. Even though I haven't used this feature, I'm sure some people have.

  • Using two computers to make one fast one?

Is it possible to use two imacs linked together to make one fast computer? Like a master/slave computer set up? If so how?

Although I do not use it, XGrid looks to do what you want.
It is a free download and you can get it here.

  • Two users, four iPods, one Library

I should qualify this by saying that I am a recent switcher. I have played with my Mac(s) some but I want to make sure I do this the right way.
My wife and I want to each have our own login to the computer so our settings and things stay independent of one another but we want to share a single iTunes Library.
In windows, this always trashed things pretty bad until we reached the point that the library was part of my login and she would login as me to manage her songs and sync her ipod.
Are we in the same boat on a Mac? What is the best way to go about setting this up?

I spoke too soon. I tried out the steps in the article and it did not work.
I copied the Music folder from my Home folder out to the Hard drive. I then set my iTunes preferences to change to this location. But then my library looks empty. If i then import they show up.
When i log in as my wife, I change her preferences to the same place but it is empty. I add the folder and the songs show up but when I import something as either user, it imports it to the home/music folder and not the new one and each user can't see the others music.
I may not be explaining it right and probably need to spend some more time working on it. But it looks like it wants to keep using the home folder location.

  • Two computers/users. One iTunes account. Different question.

My husband and I share an iTunes account but 90% of the tunes in each of our libraries are specific to our own computers and we'd like to keep it that way. I set up iTunes match via mine, if I set it up on his (using the same ITunes store account) will the combined tunes show up on both computers? We wouldn't want that. They can live together in the Cloud, but I'd like the iTunes libraries to stay the same/

By logging into the same iTunes account and enabling iTunes Match the music from both computers will be visible on both. However, I think that you can hide the items in the cloud by pulling down View > Hide Cloud Purchases. I'm not sure if that menu command applies to iTunes Match, though.

  • Help with using two computers for iPod

So, as the title hints to, I use two different computers for my day to day activities and have now run into a big hiccup.
-I have, currently on my iPod about 475 songs. All were painstakingly loaded from their CD's onto the little devil. I did this at work in spare time (OK maybe not, but that's not wehat we're here about)
-Today I tried connecting to load some new songs, from my home machine, onto the iPod and it says it will erase all of my previous work.
-I did some browsing here and discovered things like Pod Soft or whatever but could none of those programs to work for me. I also attempted the shift/ctrl trick which failed as well.
-Am I hooped? Do I just face facts and use only one machine for this? What happens when I trade a computer? Actually, in the meantime I am not worried about that, I just want my new tunes on the iPod. I am feeling quite limited by this and understood it would be a much easier process.
Thanks for looking in on this and any advice given.

  • 2 itunes , one ipod, one crashed computer

i had about 3500 songs on my main computer that crashed 2 months ago. luckily, i knew somone who could put all the files onto CD's so i had all my music saved. for christmas i got a new laptop and put all the songs that i really needed onto it from those data discs. over time i discovered new music and now have about 400 or so new songs that i want to put onto my ipod from my laptop. Is this possible? i'm new at this stuff please help.

You can just set up one iTunes Music folder and Add music to each account's library from that folder. If you want to use both accounts to add new songs to that single folder, make sure you set the preferences in each account's iTunes to use the same folder as the default iTunes Music folder. Just don't mess around manually with the organization of the files within that iTunes Music folder, because if you do, at least one of the account's iTunes Library files is going to wind up with directory information that no longer is accurate. Let iTunes itself handle the organization of the music folder.
Keep in mind that the library files of the two accounts are independent. So, for example, new songs will have to be added to each account separately, even though you're storing the songs in that single location.
All of your song files can be kept in that single location, regardless of whether you add those songs to both account's iTunes Libraries or just one account's. But if you prefer to keep some songs that definitely won't be shared in separate locations, you can do that, too. The iTunes Library file keeps track of where the songs are...no sweat. Keep in mind that the iTunes Music folder location in iTunes preferences tells you where future songs you rip or add (if "copy to iTunes Music folder" is on) to your music collection will be stored. That setting does not affect songs that are already in your library.

  • Using two computers with ipod nano

My Son has an Ipod nano and received a gift card for Christmas. He has music on his Ipod from our home computer.
Our home computer has slow internet service so we went to his Dad's work to use the gift card on his computer that has a much faster internet. When my son purchased music from Itunes and put then on his Ipod all the music he had previously on it was gone and he was left with only the new purchase he made. When he got back home he went into Itunes to put his old music on and the new music went away. Is there a way I can get what's on our home computer and what's on his dad's work computer onto his Ipod. Thanks you in advance!!

The short answer is yes, it's possible.
Have him start by getting all of the songs from home on his iPod and then with the iPod still connected go into the edit menu and then click on Preferences at the end of the list, it should come up to the music tab for the connected nano. Change the settings so that the music is managed manually. This will stop iTunes from automatically updating the nano as soon as it's connected.
At this point the home computer should be set, then at the work computer when he attaches the iPod it should come up and show a message box saying something about the fact that the iPod is using a library on another computer and it will ask if you want to transfer to the current computer, say no to that, and then go into the iTunes preferences again and set it to manual just like the home computer.
Once that's all done he'll be able to drag the purchased songs from the work computer's library onto his nano without having any of his existing music go away.
