Two computers with iTunes and one external drive

Hope someone has an idea.....I have internet at work, but not at home. I do have iTunes8 on both, but can not download or store my music library on the work computer. I have created a large music library on the home computer already and now need to get some missing album art and track info. How can I move the library to the external drive and then use the iTunes on my office computer to get the art and track info then take it back home?

  • Help with iTunes and an external hard drive please

I have an external hard drive that I like to store my music on since I usually have a good deal of it.
Anyone know the best way to do this?
Cause what I have done in the past is set iTunes to monitor the folder on the ext hd where my music is. But it still seems to create an iTunes music library folder on the Mac hd. So then I have double of everything. One on my Mac hd and one on the ext hd.
Anyone have advice? Or know why it might be doing this or how to fix it...
    Thanks

    For instructions, see:
iTunes: Moving Your iTunes Music Folder
Don't delete the tracks from the old location until you've confirmed that they're working correctly from the external drive. And IMPORTANT: do not delete the iTunes folder or the preference files it contains from your boot hard drive; delete ONLY the tracks themselves (i.e. the contents of the old iTunes Music folder).

  • File Structure with iTunes on an External Drive

This is an image of the file structure on my external drive that holds all of my iTunes music:
Is this correct, or should I have set it up differently? I am asking since it is differnet the the iTunes file structure on my MacBook Pro and some files will get uploaded to my external drive and others will go onto my MBP,s iTunes Music folder. All of my iPhone/iPad apps, Album Artwork, Mobile Applications. I have Book folders on both drives and the both have books on them.
I should say that I had a major problem a few years ago, which has nothing to do with the above problem, with one of the iTunes updates which disconnected most of my songs from their respective files. I tried a solution a friend sugested, which really messed up the files and now many of the files have different info inside the song files, i.e., Otis Redding as the Artist on a Radiohead track. Or another groups cover for a Beatles album. I have a large library and have gone through slowly and fixed many things, but it is still quite messy and a huge bummer.. As a proud new owner of a Late 2011 MacBook Pro, I would love to be able to have a solution for this as well.
    TIA

Well I just went through the same thing. I had a Lacie Porsche mobile drive at 80GB and changed to a Lacie Rugged 250. I keep all my music on external never local. Not a fan of loading my laptop. Anyways.... I was getting those same errors. I had copied all the itunes library contents from the Porsche drive to the Rugged drive. It took quite some time to transfer so you knew it was working. Then changed in the preferences of iTunes to save in the Rugged drive. If you trashed or deleted any files from the new drive and just put them in the trash without emptying you get that 501 trashes path. I found I had multiple duplicates of songs with the name of the song followed by a 1.mp4a. I think the library.xml file is the key to a clean transfer of music. I think this file is stored locally in your user folder and then it's used to direct to the alternate drive but from what I've read it's the file with all the playlist information and stuff on it. If you find it and move it over to the mobile drive then hold option and boot up itunes then tell it to look for that file on the new mobile I think you'll have no worries. I'm actually gonna try this myself.
You don't want to know how it got it working. I physically opened every music file on the rugged drive to make sure the were all where they were supposed to be. All 70'gb's of music. Never doing that again.

  • Troubles with iTunes on an external drive

I'll try and make this brief. My music library had become too large for my computer, so a few years ago I started keeping it on an external drive. This worked much better until I decided to change drives for a variety of reasons. The first time I did this, no problems. Everything transfered fine.
Recently, I upgraded again, or went sideways since I'm still using the other hard drive, just for different purposes. This time, not so good. First off, my iTunes is still reading all my files as coming from the convoluted place I squirreled them away on my older drive, even though I tried to put them on my new one.
To make a long story short, I now have duplicates of every song in my iTunes library, one of which is in the old drive, and the other of which is supposed to be on the new one but isn't really. When I did the whole consolidating my library thing, it ended up erasing all the actual songs from the new drive, which scared the **** out of me. Thankfully, like I said, it's still on the old one.
Now here's the weird thing. Going into the info for the songs that are supposed to exist on my new drive shows a pathway like so:
    Music:.Trashes:501:Athletes:Vehicals & Animals
Music is the new drive, Athletes and Vehicals & Animals is the music, but what the **** is .Trashes:501?
    The other pathway is:
    LaCie:Old Drive:Backup:Music:iTunes:Athletes:Vehicals & Animals
LaCie is the drive, Old Drive, Backup, Music, iTunes are various folders, etc.
I should mention, I get that obnoxious exclamation point if I try having just the new drive connected, but with both, the music that has the new drive's pathway works fine. What the **** is going on? If you can figure this out (or convince me to simply bring it in to an apple store and beg for help) I will be so ******* happy. Thanks.

  • Problems using iTunes and my external drive.

So I initially had a little trouble getting my iTunes to work smoothly with my external drive, a My Book 1Tb, but after a lot of trouble shooting and help from people on the forum I got it and it worked brilliantly. But now, it seems to have run out of gas, the drive is on (indicated by the blue light on the front of the case) but there is no disk image on my desktop and no matter how many time I 1) search for the drive, 2) disconnect it physically from the computer and reconnect it, 3) shut everything down and boot back up it is still unresponsive. I started having problems with my TimeMachine saying it could not back up files onto the disk and couldn't figure that problem out either. And now this, I am really hoping it isn't the drive, even though I thought it was. However, my Mac (iMac G5) has really been acting up now too.
Every time I try to verify and repair the disk permissions in DiskUtility it freezes while still verifying. And my iTunes has been locking up and constantly unresponsive. I am not that savy with technology and so I am now at the end of my rope.
Please help me solve my issues?

You might want to take this over to the Leopard discussion group since it really sounds like it is a drive or computer issue. It will get better attention that way.

  • Time Machine 1 iMac, 1 Macbook and one external drive

This must be a very simple question as I cannot find anyone else that seems to have this problem.
I have a Macbook that is just a few months old and a very new iMac each running Leopard. I have an external drive connected via Firewire 800 to the iMac. I have shared the drive on the iMac so the Macbook can access it. I mount the drive under Devices in Finder on the Macbook. In Time Machine preferences on the Macbook I select the drive to be used by Time Machine. When I do a Back up Now I get the Preparing message for a few seconds and then get a Failed message. The status is: 'Latest Backup: Delayed'.
Oh and I have just clicked on the red I next to the Failed message and am told:
Time Machine Error The backup volume could not be mounted.
Is Time Machine an idea before its time (I speak as an old Windows user that is used to stuff being released before it is stable - and I am beginning to wonder if I should have stuck with the devil I know)

See this article: Mac OS X 10.5- Time Machine - "The backup volume could not be mounted" alert.

  • Managing 2 iPhones with iTunes and one iTunes account and computer...

    Hello All!
I already have a 16GB 3G iPhone and we're going to be getting another 3G for my wife (whether it is 8GB or 16GB is still to be decided). On my phone, I have about 13GB used, with the primary source being music. We intend the same iTunes account and there are no other devices using authorizations on this account.
*First, does Apple's licensing of applications allow the second phone using the same iTunes account to download all of the previously purchased applications for free?* In other words, will she be able to download any applications I purchased for free since I have unlimimted free downloads on my phone?
Second, and most importantly, I am wondering how iTunes manages two different iPhones on one computer. This will especially be an issue if she gets an 8GB iPhone since everything that is on my phone will not fit on an 8GB model. She doesn't want or need all of my music, so we could very easily not transfer all of the music. But, I'm just wondering how they will co-exist if they are different sizes and her phone might keep running out of room. If the iTunes software doesn't handle this situation well, we may buy a 16GB model just to make our lives easier. *If someone could provide me with information on how the iTunes software handles multiple phones (especially if they are of different capacities) or links to other websites with information on this topic I would really appreciate it.*
We need to make our purchase in the next month, so I want to know what we are getting into if she decides to get an 8GB model with me having a 16GB one. I just don't want to have a management nightmare. I'd appreciate any help in advance. Thanks!
    Jim

I currently have 2 iphones, 1 is a 2G 8GB, the other is a 3G 16GB. I use smart playlists on the 16GB and only sync those playlists. The 8G is set up to manually manage music per my sons request. It would be just as easy to have a playlist set up for him and have it sync only that playlist. So yes, you can absolutely have both on one computer. As far as applications, as long as you are syncing to the same computer/same account, it will allow you to place the app's on both machines. I don't know what the legality of that is, however.

  • IPod Classic won't sync with iTunes library on external drive

iPod Classic 160 is recognized by iTunes.   It knows the library is bigger than the iPod, and it allows me to select parts of the Music and Podcasts to install on said iPod.  It whirs for a long time, pretends it's writing to the iPod.  When I disconnect, there are no songs and no Podcasts on the iPod.
It did the same with a NEW iPod I bought yesterday.
How can I fix tbhis so I can write part of my library to at least one of my iPods?
    Thanks for any help.

After searching this issue out and trying a bazillion different things (with no luck), I deselected 'Enable Disk Use' then re-enabled, and everything is working now.
Dear Apple -- What is up with that?

  • Other Computers with iTunes and iPhone

Was wondering if anyone knew how to play music when the iPhone is connected to another computer other than the one you have your main music library on, ie. I am at work and have my iPhone docked to the computer here, and my music shows up in iTunes, but is greyed out, and is not accessible, this never happened on my iPod, what's the deal?!

The music is greyed out because the iphone does not have a manually manage setting like ipod. So when it is connected to another computer itunes will see the music but will be grayed out. So at this time it is not possible to listen to music on the iphone through another computer. If you would like to provide feedback about this feel free to. http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

  • Everything seems OK with Mavericks and WD external HD

I'm reading about tons of problems with Mavericks and WD external drives. Most mention WD software glitches.
I have a 2T WD My Book USB external HD. After upgrading to Mavericks (two weeks now), I haven't experienced and data loss at all, and all my partitions have retained their names and icons. They all check out OK in Disk Utility. I did have a Finder glitch once where I could not Copy/Paste any file over several several MB., (error 8057) but a restart fixed it. As far as know, that was only from one partition. I have had some video issues launching .avi and .mkv with an 'app not found' error. Making VLC the default for the those files in Get Info seems to have solved that (except the icons remain Quicktime). Previously when launching .avi files QuickTime did not launch and attempt to convert it.
For now, I'm regarding the video thing as a separate issue.
When I got my WD USB ext. a year ago, I did not install ANY WD software. I simply formatted to HFS+ and partitioned in Disk Utility and was good to go. Is it safe to say that since I don't have any of that pre-Mavericks software installed (I double checked with Spotlight), that my external drive is safe? Or should I run out and get a solid state drive ASAP? Is it also fairly safe to think that since I went through the upgrade unmolested and it's been two weeks now that everything is probably OK?

Yup, that's exactly what I meant. It comes preinstalled.

  • Question on iTunes libraries on external drives

Back a few years ago I put my itunes music library lived in a NAS drive. If the drive was not mounted however when you launched iTunes the library would reset resulting in a blank iTunes.
This was such a deal breaker for me in the end I ditched the nas.
Now I have my itunes library on an external USB Harddrive. If for some reason the drive is not attached when launched, all that happens is you see your library of music but when you select anything a little alert icon goes next to it with a warning the music could not be found. When you attach the harddrive all is well again.
A friend has an extreme base station with his music folder on. And has just explined to me the self same issue as I used to have.
Can someone explain why iTunes will sometimes work fine, and sometimes reset depending on how it feels? Is there a way to predict this, and more importantly ensure that iTunes simply says it cannot find the tune, and not reset the whole library. Which is a most odd behaviour anyhow.

Your iTunes folder on your Startup Drive (in your USER>MUSIC>ITUNES folder) contains a file that is the roadmap to all of your songs, ratings, playlists, etc. Your iTunes application (in the applications folder on the startup drive) is, well, the application (like an engine) that runs iTunes.
By default, your iTunes Library (where all your actual MP3 files are stored) is in that iTunes folder (in your USER>MUSIC>ITUNES folder). However, when you store it on an external drive, you usually change it's location (in Preferences) so that iTunes knows where the Library is located.
So.....what's probably going on is that you have iTunes set up right for an external drive and it will run properly when that drive is plugged in. iTunes knows where everything is because all that info is contained in the file I mentioned. When you start iTunes and your external drive is not plugged in, iTunes will default to the iTunes Library in the folder on your Startup Drive (USER>MUSIC>ITUNES folder), which is probably empty. It knows where all your songs are on that external drive, but can't access them b/c the drive is off or disconnected.

  • HT204053 I have two accounts with ITunes can I merge the two

I have two account with ITune and I would like to merge them.. any help with this ..

Sorry, Apple IDs cannot be merged.
    From Here   http://support.apple.com/kb/HE37
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • I'm having a problem with downloading multiple app updates and moving songs between iTunes and my external hard drive.

I'm having two problems with iTunes, but I'm not sure if they're related issues. First, when I try to click "Download All Updates" for apps, only one update will download and I will get successive error messages for all of the other updates. However, if I click update for each individual app, they download fine. Why am I not able to download all app updates simultaneously now.
My second issue is that I cannot move songs from iTunes to my external hard drive or vice versa. When I drag the files, the blue plus sign appears, but the file does not appear where I moved it to.
Both issues have been occuring for about month. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While downloading select Downloads in the left-hand column and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unchecked. This seems to help with partial downloads...
The other issue doesn't ring any bells.
