Two display questions

Anyone who can answer either of these questions will be my hero:
I have a desktop monitor as well as a hi-def TV connected to my G5 tower
1: while trying to change my wallpaper on the TV (my secondary monitor) I somehow managed to move my dock there even though my desktop monitor is the primary. How do I move it back?
If I swap which the TV monitor to primary and then back to secondary, the dock will momentarily appear on the desktop monitor, but will then move back to the TV.
2: Before I got the Hi Def TV, I had an older TV connected, which I have since disconnected. However, in my display preferences setup it still acts as though the old TV is there (so there are three displays shown even though I only have two). How do I get Leopard to acknowledge that there are really only two monitors? I've tried running the "detect monitor" function several times thinking that will reset things, but it never works.

1. Go to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement. Click and drag the white bar that represents the Menu Bar to the desired screen. This will move your Dock and Menu Bar.
2. In your "display preferences setup", which dialog are you referring to? Display, Arrangement, or Color?

  • Two Dock Questions...

Two quick questions. First, I'm wondering if there is anyway to have certain dock preferences set for different displays. For instance...when I have my Macbook hooked up to my external display, I like the dock to always display on the left of the screen. When I am using my Macbook's screen, I like it to disappear and be at the bottom of the screen. Since my computer can detect when it is connected to the external display, it should be able to make those distinctions. Anyone know how that could work?
Second, I'm wondering how I can get the applications stack back into the dock. I accidentally removed it awhile ago and can't figure out how to get it back.
    Thanks.

This doesn't work. I'm trying to grab the Applications folder from the finder, and when I move it to the dock, the cloud icon stays there. The dock never responds like it is going to accept a new stack. I can get any other folder to appear as a stack, but not the Applications folder. I tried with the applications link that is in the sidebar of the Finder and that is what happened. I also grabbed the Applications folder from the Home folder, and it will allow me to place it in the stack portion of the dock. However, it never operates as a stack. It just opens that folder in the finder. I right clicked on the folder in the dock and "display as stack" is checked, but it still opens as a folder.

  • Second display questions

I'm considering buying a current iMac and adding an additional 20-inch DVI monitor for design work. (Trying to decide between this setup or getting a single 2.8 Mac Pro.)
Question 1: Does having the extra monitor slow anything down?
Question 2: Would either the 20 or 24-inch iMac work with the additional 20-inch display?
    Thanks!

Technically, your iMac is doing more work by displaying on two displays (pushing more pixels around). However, I have a second display at 1600x1200 connected to my iMac (and old 17-inch iMac from 2006), and if there is any "slowness," I don't notice it. I do notice a difference in performance when I try to put the same display on my old PowerBook Pismo.
The max resolution for DVI connection is 1920x1200, for either iMac model. I've read about some issues with 1440x900 resolution, so you may want to avoid that native resolution for the monitor. I believe most 20-inch DVI displays are 1680x1050, so it should be OK.

  • Get server date and user account to display them in two display items.

    Hello,
I would like to get the server date and the curent Oracle user account to display them in two "display items" in my form. So, If someone can help me, I will appreciate it.
    Thanks!

There's nothing to fetch. You assign the value from the function GET_APPLICATION_PROPERTY(USERNAME); as you would any value returned from a function.
    DECLARE
       myVar    VARCHAR2(50);
    BEGIN
       myVar := GET_APPLICATION_PROPERTY(USERNAME);
    END;Hope this helps.

  • How can I limit aperture to two displays

I want to run Aperture on display 1 and 2, and Keynote on display 3.  When Aperture is active display 1 has most of the application, and both of the other displays show images of whatever is selected on display 1.  How can I limit aperture to just two displays.

For your account choose "no access" by clicking on the triangle.
    Hi a.
What ì assume John means to say is you have to block access to your "guest accounts". What John describes is what you should use for any folders and files you keep outside the Home folder of your Admin account. There's also a more advanced thingy called Access Control Lists, but I'm not going to discuss that here.
Inside your Admin account's Home folder things work a bit differently: by default, at least on my Macs, an account (even it's Administrator) doesn't have access to another accounts data except for the Public and Sites folders. All other folders are unaccessible, which is indicated by a small stop sign in the lower left corner of the folder. Exception are of course folders are that you shared on purpose through File Sharing in the System Preferences menu.
You also talk about Applications. I don't have experience with this but I believe you can create an Applications or Application/Utilities folder in your Admin account's Home folder. In this case you'll be the only one to have access to the software installed. I'm quite sure not all applications support this, and application updates might not succeed.
Which brings me to a question: you talk about "guest accounts": what is the purpose you created them? If it's just to discover the world of Mac OS X, do enable login on a Mac OS X Guest Account: good riddance of the stuff they created when they log out. If it's a bit more don't hesitate to share your thoughts. Note that these forums are in general very helpful.

  • Two displays

Sorry if this has been asked before, could not find anything about it ?
So as the title says : can the MacBook use two external displays ? I know there is a Matrox thingy that will let the Mini use two displays can this be used with the MacBook, will it just screen span or are they independent ?
    Custom mini

    Hi Custom Mini,
I am also right now looking to buy an external monitor to hook up to my MacBook. As much as my Mac's screen is gorgeous I'm outgrowing the 13 inches of real estate
The answer to your question is yes, you can run two monitors off your MacBook but just be a little careful... here's why
Your MacBook comes with a Mini DVI connector on the left hand side beside your MagSafe port. If you are looking to buy a new monitor then make sure its DVI for improved visual performance. You will need to then purchase a Mini DVI to DVI cable which allows that external monitor to connect to your Mac.
You can use a VGA monitor but you'll need a Mini DVI to VGA cable instead. Don't try and do what many have attempted which is to connect a Mini DVI to DVI cable into a DVI to VGA cable... the chances are this wont work.
When you connect up your second display you'll be given the option through System Preferences > Displays to either extend your desktop or to mirror it. With mirroring you'll effectively have both displays showing the same thing. With the extended desktop you'll have one huge desktop. I recently asked the question on this forum about whether I can run my bigger external monitor as the primary and have the MacBook at one side as the secondary and I've been told that this is perfectly allright.
I hope this helps you out

  • Daisy chain two display port monitors (Dell U2913WM) to new Mac mini Thunderbolt?

Everything I read said that I could hook up a display port monitor to a Thunderbolt port on the mac mini.  I purchased two display port monitors (Dell U2913WM) that can be daisy chained, and hooked them up.  All I get is mirroring.  Does anyone know how to turn off mirroring with this setup?  I did not get the "uncheck mirroring" option in preferences until I hooked up the second via the HDMI port instead of a daisy chain.  The problem with that is, I cannot take advantage of the full resolution through the HDMI.  It seems I have wasted my money on two monitors.
    Looking for advice on:
    1) How to daisy chain these two Dell monitors to the mac mini and turn off mirroring and use an extended desktop, or
    2) How to take advantage of the full resolution through HDMI port?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

So re-reading this thread, I now realize you did exactly what I wanted to do but your issue was having a cloned vs. extended desktop. Oops!
I believe your "nothing plugged in" issue is the cable. I'm not sure that TB cables are backwards compatible with DP - I think it's only the ports. Do you see multiple monitors in "System Preferences > Displays" if you hook the monitors up like you described in your OP?
My Dell U2713H arrived today and it works like a charm with the supplied Mini-DP to DP cable. The built-in display on my 13" mid 2009 MBP still works if not in clamshell mode, although I will mostly use mine in my HengeDock. In the OSD of the monitor, you can access "Display Settings > Display Info" and it will show you the DP capability. Mine is only DP 1.1a and I believe to run 2 of these at full resolution you will need the bandwidth in DP 1.2 which includes MST (daisy-chaining). This could be your problem.
Can you access the same menu in your OSD and report back what your DP compatability is?
    Thanks!

With the updates came iTunes 11.1.1 and Quicktime 7.6.6. I am still using Garageband 2008 and iPhoto 2008. When I create music in Garageband I usually adjust the volume and save it. Even now when I share the Garageband created files with iTunes 11.1.1, the volime I previously set in Garageband is retained. However, when I use the music to create a slide show in iPhoto 2008 and export to Quicktime 7.6.6, the volume level I previously set is lost and seems to default to a low level. The problem seems to be either in the slide show export from iPhoto 2008 to Quicktime 7.6.6 or in Quicktime itself. Is there a work around, so that I can retain the volume level I had previously set in Garageband, a volume level that seems to transfer without problem to the new iTunes. But then iPhoto 2008 (slide show) possibly or Quicktime 7.6.6 do not cooperate. Before I did the upgrade to Snow Leopard, the new iTunes and Quicktime I had no problems with the set volume being retained in the old Quicktime. The reason I need control over the volume is that all these music files are uploaded to YouTube.

  • HT4614 connecting two displays on mac mini(late 2012)

I have a mac mini (on order). I want to use two displays as follows: connect one to the thunderbolt port and one to the hdmi port. Can I do it?

If possible steer away from analog VGA.
If you have DVI or HDMI supported monitors, you can use the supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter or a straight HDMI cable from the Mini's HDMI port for one monitor.
Then depending on the second monitor HDMI, DVI or VGA you will need one of the following MiniDisplay Port to HDMI, DVI or VGA Adapters connected to the Thunderbolt Port. Optionaly, if you had a monitor that supported Display Port, then you could use a MiniDisplay Port to Display Port cable.
Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support - Apple Store (U.S.)
Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)
Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)

It helps have 2 monitors, so that you can monitor data XFER, just my experience. If nothing else it allows you keep am eye on what is going on.
