Two displays necessary?

Is a 24" enough for Logic Pro? I'm crammed into a 12" PB screen right now and I'm going to upgrade soon but I'm having trouble deciding between imac and mac pro. I'll have a 24" display soon as well so if i got the imac i'd have two screens to work with, is it overkill? If i'm not mistaken a 24" screen would be 4X what I'm working with now, right? Seems like plenty of space.

If I had the $$ right now I'd definitly get a second screen - I have a 20" Dell Widescreen Ultrasharp (same panel as the Apple 20" and 1/2 the price) now and a second would really help - put the mixer and FX on one side and the arrange window on the other.
I'd be careful about getting an iMac - when it comes time to upgrade you have to change out everything including the monitor - better to buy a desktop of some kind and separate monitor/s that way you can keep the monitor/s when it's time to upgrade. Just my 2 cents.
I had a Peforma 5210 back in the '90's and then bought a third generation iMac - each time I upgraded I thought "what a waste!" I should buy a box so I can keep my monitors - they are a big chunk of the cost of a computer. I think its less expesnive in the long run.

  • Daisy chain two display port monitors (Dell U2913WM) to new Mac mini Thunderbolt?

Everything I read said that I could hook up a display port monitor to a Thunderbolt port on the mac mini.  I purchased two display port monitors (Dell U2913WM) that can be daisy chained, and hooked them up.  All I get is mirroring.  Does anyone know how to turn off mirroring with this setup?  I did not get the "uncheck mirroring" option in preferences until I hooked up the second via the HDMI port instead of a daisy chain.  The problem with that is, I cannot take advantage of the full resolution through the HDMI.  It seems I have wasted my money on two monitors.
    Looking for advice on:
    1) How to daisy chain these two Dell monitors to the mac mini and turn off mirroring and use an extended desktop, or
    2) How to take advantage of the full resolution through HDMI port?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

So re-reading this thread, I now realize you did exactly what I wanted to do but your issue was having a cloned vs. extended desktop. Oops!
I believe your "nothing plugged in" issue is the cable. I'm not sure that TB cables are backwards compatible with DP - I think it's only the ports. Do you see multiple monitors in "System Preferences > Displays" if you hook the monitors up like you described in your OP?
My Dell U2713H arrived today and it works like a charm with the supplied Mini-DP to DP cable. The built-in display on my 13" mid 2009 MBP still works if not in clamshell mode, although I will mostly use mine in my HengeDock. In the OSD of the monitor, you can access "Display Settings > Display Info" and it will show you the DP capability. Mine is only DP 1.1a and I believe to run 2 of these at full resolution you will need the bandwidth in DP 1.2 which includes MST (daisy-chaining). This could be your problem.
Can you access the same menu in your OSD and report back what your DP compatability is?
    Thanks!

  • How can I use two displays with my Mac Mini?

How can I connect two displays to my Mac Mini (newest generation with one thunderbold and one hdmi)?

Have you tried connecting one to the HDMI output, and another to the Thunderbolt port (with the appropriate Mini DisplayPort-to-other connection adapter as needed)?

  • HT4614 connecting two displays on mac mini(late 2012)

I have a mac mini (on order). I want to use two displays as follows: connect one to the thunderbolt port and one to the hdmi port. Can I do it?

If possible steer away from analog VGA.
If you have DVI or HDMI supported monitors, you can use the supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter or a straight HDMI cable from the Mini's HDMI port for one monitor.
Then depending on the second monitor HDMI, DVI or VGA you will need one of the following MiniDisplay Port to HDMI, DVI or VGA Adapters connected to the Thunderbolt Port. Optionaly, if you had a monitor that supported Display Port, then you could use a MiniDisplay Port to Display Port cable.

  • HT4413 To transfer everything from my Mac mini to a new Mac Pro do I need two displays? Once I have confirmed my mini is open while pressing T can I then disconnect my Cinema Display from the mini and connect it to the Pro to continue the transfer?

Can I set up my Mac mini to transfer its contents to a new Mac Pro and then disconnect my Cinema Display and use it connected to the Pro to complete the transfer?  Do I actually need two displays to manage the transfer?

It helps have 2 monitors, so that you can monitor data XFER, just my experience. If nothing else it allows you keep am eye on what is going on.

  • Mac Mini Server with two displays

I am about to purchase the new MMS, but I want to clarify two things first.
I just got off the phone with Apple Customer Service. I asked them, if it's possible to connect two displays, one via Thunderbolt, the other via mini port at full 2500x1440 res. The guy said, it's possible with two Thunderbolt displays, however, he seemed not to sure about it. Further, he couldn't say anything about the possibility of connecting one Thunderbolt and an older Cinema display at full res.
    Does anybody know?
    Thanks!

I'm not sure about the full res on HDMI. They always had the dual link adapter for the mini display port, not sure how this HDMI one will work out. Maybe they'll offer a special adapter in time?

  • Run two displays with current Mac mini?

Can two displays be run with the current mac mini? I would like to be able to have itunes open on one display while using the second for all other use. Thank you.

The new Mac mini has two dispay ports, the mini-DVI and a mini-DisplayPort. You can attach a display to each port with the proper adapters. It also comes with a mini-DVI to DVI adapter.

  • Can I run these two display resolutions simultaneously?

My early 2009 Mac Mini (MB463LL/A) is currently driving a 24" Dell display through the Mini DVI port at a resolution of 1920 X 1200. I plan to extend the desktop with a 20" display running at its optimal resolution of 1600 X 1200.
I'm a little confused by the specs, however, which state that the Mac Mini "simultaneously supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display… and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using MiniDisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter…"
I understand about the adapters. What's unclear to me is whether these specifications refer to the total resolution split between two displays or the max resolution per display.
    In other words, I'd like to run my 24" display at 1920 X 1200 and 20" display at 1600 X 1200 simultaneously. Can I?
    Thanks.

Yes. The specs are for each physical port individually.

  • Can't get two displays to work anymore

We have a computer lab where I work of PowerMac G5's, all which have two 17" LCD monitors attached. One of the computers recently stopped working with two displays and will only work with one. If both monitors are plugged in, the LCD that works will be the one with the "extra" desktop area. If you unplug a monitor, you can get the actual desktop area on the one remaining monitor. The monitors are both fine (swapped them out) and the video connector/converters are fine, as I swapped them with another system that works fine. When looking at "Display" in system preferences, the "arrangement" tab is completely missing on either monitor. I have reinstalled the drivers, (it's an ATI Radeon 9800 xt 256 mg) swapped with another video card from a spare system, and even reinstalled Mac OS X (reinstall/archive feature) and still nothing has happened. I've thought it was a hardware problem all a long, my boss thinks it is software. I'm very new at Macs. Any suggestions?
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

If you can find a used one. That is the only dual card Apple was selling at the time. There a other choices now, from adding a PCI card, to replacing your current card with a dual. I'm not sure of the AGP speed of your machine, so can't recommend a specific card, but when you do buy one, insist on a money back guarantee that it will work with your machine. Some cards don't work with all the machines the claim to be compatible with.

  • Connecting Two Displays

I now have two Cinema displays that I would like to connect to my G5. Where the DVI ports are I'm short one FireWire port since both displays require a USB and FireWire connection along with the DVI.
Can someone suggest a good way around this to allow for two displays? Is there such a thing as an extension for a FireWire cable that I can then run to the other side of the G5 where there is another FW port? The problem with this is that I have no FW ports left on the G5. Do I run any risks if I try to daisy-chain my display's FW to a port on one of my external hard-drives?
Do FireWire hubs exist and are they reliable? I could be overlooking something with regard to connecting two displays as I'm sure it's done all the time. I'm just not sure about the best way to proceed. Thanks for any info.

There are FireWire hubs and extension cables, but
unless you need to use the FireWire ports on the
displays, you don't have to connect their FireWire
    cables.
I'm in the same situation as Stuart - I'm short one Firewire port.
I tried plugging a powered Firewire Hub into the back of my new G5, and then tried plugging the 2 ACD Firewire cables into the hub - the G5 crashed on Startup.
Surely there has to be more support info "out there" than "There are hubs & extension cables...
Can we plug a Powered Hub into ACD #1, then plug the ACD Firewire cable into the Hub?
Is it safe to use an Extender/Repeater?
Is there a "Splitter" available, and it it safe to use?

  • Two displays with MBP

i have one apple cinema display that i connect to my MBP. i also have an older flat screen that i would also like to connect. both displays have the same attachment thingy to fit the MBP, but of course the MBP only has one input. is there an adapter that splits from the MBP to allow two displays? or another way to do it?

There are two products from Matrox, DualHead2Go and TripleHead2Go that allow a single VGA signal to be split across two or three monitors. It’s not DVI, but it’s relatively affordable ($160 for the dual version).

  • Setting different resolution for two displays

Before I buy a Mac Mini I was wondering if I can connect two separate displays, one a 15" with XGA and the other a 8" with VGA. This is for an installation aboard a sailboat so I'm not looking to run HD, (not now anyway). I looked at the "System Preferences" on my MacBook to see what was available under "Display" and could not see where I can set up two displays with very different settings.
Is there a way to setup each display individually for simultaneous use? Thank you.

Yes, assuming that the 8" display has a resolution that the Mac can support. When you open the Displays system preference, you'll get a settings window on each display (as long as the option for Mirroring isn't checked).
    Regards.

  • Problem using two displays...

So I'm running my G5 with OSX 10.4.10 with a Radeon 9800 XT. I have two displays connected. A 23" Apple Cinema display conneded, via a Belkin ADC to DVI adaptor, to the ADC port. The second display is a Princeton VL 1919 connected directly to the DVI port. They both work great.
    But there's a problem.
Every 20 minutes, or so, everything will freeze up & the screens will go blue. Everything will hang for a couple of seconds & then return to normal.
It didn't start doing this until I connected the Princeton. Now I know that the Princeton is OK because I used it with my Mini for months & it was perfect. Also, The Cinema Display was perfect on it's own. Not until I put them together on the G5 was there a problem.
I went to the Radeon site to download a new driver, but there isn't one available for the 9800 XT. Only the 9800 Pro Mac & Pro Mac Special Edition.
    Any ideas?
    Any insight is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for any help offered.

    Hmmm...
Well, I just got an email back from the coolerguys. They said that this "Might" work...
    http://www.coolerguys.com/840556026433.html
    But they can't be sure.
So I'm going to plan ahead & assume that either it will not fit, or I'm going to kill the card when I try to install the fan.
    So...
Can you recommend a replacement card that people have been generally happy with? All I need it to do is drive two screens, one of them being a 23" & be able to handle some pretty demanding Photoshop work/Indesign work.
    Any advise is appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Unwanted migration of dock from one screen to another (two displays)

I recently upgraded to Mavericks, and now when I open certain applications (e.g. Calendar), the dock jumps from its position on the bottom of my right screen (two-display set up) to the bottom of the left display.
This is problematic for several reasons, not the least of which is I want to control what happens, not be at the whim of Mac OS-X.  But the important thing here is that the two screens are not the same - one is a cinema display, one a lower resolution monitor, and I have them arranged this way for a reason.  OS-X is moving the dock to the lower resolution display, and that's crowding it.
What's causing this?  How can I get it to stop?

The dock is made to move based on dragging the pointer down off the bottom edge of the display where the Dock is not.  So, if the dock is on display 1 and you drag your mouse point down from the bottom edge of display 2, the dock interprets this as "move to display 2".
Is it possible your are inadvertantly doing this while working in calendar?
