Two Drive Raid 0 vs. Two Drives for Media

I understand that for scratch disks you want the fastest and largest drive, so raid 0 would probably be great for a scratch disc.
How about two media disks at 7200rpm rather than raid 0 of the same two drives? Two things to consider reliability and speed.   The idea is to duplicate the footage to both drives and import both as separate bins into premiere and on the timeline go back and forth between the two drive to not stress a single drive. Is this a good possibility or better to put them into raid 0.
Lets look at these possibilities:
1.     2 sata drives in raid 0 (for media, including audio/music and animations/motion graphics)
2.     2 sata drives in raid 0, and a 3rd drive for audio and motion graphics.
3.     2 sata drives for media (no raid), a 3rd for audio and motion graphics

Using disks individually is half the performance at double the headache (of managing the media spread over two drive letters), with one possible benefit of a lesser chance of a full data loss. I'd vouch for RAID0 as long as there is a copy of the source files somewhere else.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.

What Size Drive for Media Cache?

Hi there,
I'm about to edit a large project (5TB of 4K RED footage and counting) on a laptop and am intending to use the setup below for disks. Ideally I would have gone for a "4 disk" setup, but I've maxed out my eSATA connections and would have to use USB for anything else. If coincidentally you can see any problems with this configuration please let me know!

3x 2TB Drives in eSATA docking stations (Media, Projects)
Second internal hard disk (Previews, Media Cache, Exports)

Perhaps only that the predominant holy grail on this forum is achieving a high PPBM score, not necessarily edit 4K.

Personally, I wouldn't dedicate a disk or a volume to media cache and DB - I believe that money is better spent on the main media volume's speed and capacity. In your case, since you don't seem to plan to have a relatively fast main media volume (e.g. an eSATA RAID0), a separate drive for media caching and database may have a performance benefit. The size of it depends on the size of your projects, how complex your project and timelines are, how much rendering they require. Usually even a small disk (under 100GB) will do just fine for the purpose; the current "sweet spot" is around 256GB SSD and 500-750GB 7200rpm mechanical drive.

Scanning hard drive for media.

When I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 and reinstalled iTunes, it scanned my computer and found a bunch of old media files and placed them in iTunes. There were some I wanted to delete from my computer as I no longer needed them, I while I removed them from iTunes, I am not sure if I deleted them from my hard drive as well.
Is there any way to have iTunes scan my hard drive again and see if the files return? I tried uninstalling iTunes, moving the iTunes folder so it would not be immediately recognized, and reinstalling iTunes, but I was not prompted to run the scan again.

If the files were not in the iTunes Media folder then iTunes would not delete them, even if you deleted them from the iTunes Library.
You can use Windows search to look for music files, which is probably easier than trying to trick iTunes into searching for media again. It normally only does this on a first install of iTunes.

FCP and internal drives for media

Does anyone have an opinion on whether it's better to put your video on external drives or internal drives when editing. I have a Mac Pro and was thinking about putting my broll on one of the 3 extra drives and work with that. Would it slow the system down? Better to keep it external?

I realize this thread is about three months old, but I thought I would ask a related question. My external esata is out of service. If I use the internal bays, is it okay to just put the captured media on one specific drive? Or does there need to be a Raid? I'm outputting as SDI out to DVD's as one-offs. And sometimes I have to output as MPEG files to our in-house video server.

I have a 13gig c drive that is almost full my pc is a 2001 sony vio so windows takes up the most of c, but I also have an 80 gig hardrive I installed itunes on that and I believe I made itunes use the d drive for media storage.

I also have an 80 gig hard drive, so I installed itunes on that,
I think and I think I have itunes pointed to have its library on the as well.
If I had to reinstall itunes because I did it all wrong,would the music I have bought from itunes be retrievable?
What would be the right way to make the itunes install, and all it constituents(i.e.media library) go on the 80gig D drive instead of the C drive?

To get a better idea of what is being stored where download and run the script iTunesInfo which should output something like this:
I'm interested in the block of 4 results starting ITL location. If your profile name shows up somewhere replace it with <Name>. It is also worth checking under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to see where iTunes thinks your media is supposed to go. My script estimates the setting based on the location of the first media file it can actually find.

A question about Thunderbolt Raid 0's as drives for Premiere

Hi all,
I've had a browse through the forum, and found some material relating to this topic, but I'm looking for a definitive as possible answer to this.
I've just left the company I used to work for, and I've begun to set up a small editing suite at home for freelance work. I've always had engineers build me workstations in the past, so I'm a little lost. I, so far, have the follwing hardware:
iMac 27" (late 2012)
32gb RAM
i7 3.4ghz
1 x 1tb internal 7200rpm drive
1 x 4tb Lacie Raid 0 Thunderbolt drive
I'm thinking about going for the classic 3 drive structure: 1.) Internal drive for apps, 2.) 1 x drive for media, and 3.) 1 x drive for previews, cache et al.
My question then, finally, is can I use these Thunderbolt Raid 0 drives as my drives 2.) and 3.)? I ran a speedtest on my current Lacie, and it was pretty impressive. I just don't want to go out and get another one to find that it's not up to the tasks I need it for above.

Yes use Lacie R0 as the media and cache and I suggest you do. Adding TB devices chained will raise the latency. That 1 Raid 0 will be more than fast enough for both.

Best Back Up Drive for Final Cut

I am about to receive a new iMac i7 for use with FCP. Some have suggested a RAID backup drive. OWC has a fair number of different types of RAID offerings, but I do not know the difference.
I am not a professional film maker, so I doubt I will need a lot of storage. 2TB sounds about right, but I'm not sure if I need more. I will have a 2TB drive in the machine itself and a separate 2TB Time Machine drive.
What kind and size of RAID drive should I consider?
(BTW, I assume that although this iMac is Thunderbolt capable, there are not yet HDs available--at least I couldn't find any.)

You need a media drive. The internal drive in the iMac is for OSX, applications and misc files. ALL media should be on an external. Thunderbolt drives (when they become common will be faster) but are not necessary for simple editing. a FW800 RAID 0 is what you need for editing right now.
This would be my recommendation.
Time Machine to backup the iMac's interna.
A FW800 RAID 0 drive for media storage and editing
A drive of the same capacity as the FW800 (can be usb2, fw400 or fw800) to back up media.
This third drive doesn't need to be RAID 0.
These days I just purchase bare drives and use the Voyager dock to connect to the system for backups. The dock is under $100 and bare 1TB drives can be had for $70 ea.

Should I partition my external hard drive for FCPX media management?

Is there any benefit to creating partitions on a single external hard drive for media management purposes?
My thoughts were to divide a 1tb external firewire drive into 3x 300gb slices and leave 100gb as "free space".
Each partition would be dedicated to at least 1 active event + project (using FCPX terms) that I am editing.
My thinking on this is that when dealing with the source media + event database, OSX/FCPX will only work on the partition that has been improving read/write speed.
I could easily be wrong about this.

In my view there is no point in partition the drive. You are wasting space and speed. Events are segregated in the FCP folder structure. There is no need to to it with partitions.

256GB SSD drive for T61?

Could someone recommend a 256GBSSD drive for T61, for example will TP 256GB Fde Solid State Drive Part# 43N3417 work on this Thinkpad model?

Hi. I have essentially the same question as the original poster, with a couple of related questions about hard drive compatibility.
I have a T61 model 64608VU, Windows XP Pro, with a 160 GB 7200rpm SATA drive now.
I would like to migrate to a (as large as possible) SSD drive for the primary drive, and a 2nd (as large as possible) hard disk drive as a secondary in an adapter in the optical drive bay. But, I'm getting conflicting information from the Lenovo site.
The product compatibility matrix says that my model should be compatible with the 500 GB 5400 SATA drive (43N3420), 500 GB 7200 SATA drive (43N3423) and 128 GB SSD drive (43N3406), but not the 256 GB FDE SSD drive (43N3417). The 128GB SSD is a new choice, when I checked a few months back it wasn't shown as compatible.
The product pages for many of those drives list models that they are compatible with, and do not include T61. Some don't even come up as choices if I enter 64608VU as my model numbers, others do but the text on the page lists models they work with and it doesn't include mine.
So, which info to trust?
I can more easily understand a "supports FDE or not" tradeoff because it requires a BIOS that knows how to talk to that feature, but I can't quite figure why a 500GB 5400rpm drive would be OK but a 500GB 7200rpm wouldn't, unless it was heat load or something. Might be a different answer in the optical bay vs primary drive?
Anyway, this is what I'd like to do:
1) Start with the T61, model 64608VU
2) Buy a SATA drive adapter 40Y8725, with the largest SSD drive I can get, ideally with FDE as well
3) Install it, clone my existing drive over to it, and move the SSD drive into my primary drive slot and put aside my old drive.
4) Buy a new SATA drive, as large as is compatible with my machine, and install it into the 2nd drive bay in the 40Y8725.
Questions are: does this make sense, any gotchas, and what are the largest drives I can use that work on my machine?
2nd order question: I'm hoping that if I use the 2nd drive for media, and aren't using it, it will spin down, so my battery life will be better than it was before (since I've replaced a running 160GB drive with a SSD + a spun down larger drive). Make sense? Also, if I just use it for streaming media, any value to 7200rpm or should I just stick with 5400rpm since it will probably use less power?

Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad? Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips. Internet and WiFi are not available. Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad). No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

Should I combine two 1Tb drives into one logical 2Tb drive or use one 1Tb drive for system/apps and move /users to the other 1Tb drive? (I'd like ease of b/u too.)

I have two 1Tb drives in my Mini, the first is full and the second one empty. (I've been using the 2nd for Time Machine but the full source from dirve 1 soon has Time Machine complaining.) I am contemplating whether to form one 2Tb logical drive from the two 1Tb drives or segregate their use, i.e. use the first 1Tb drive to hold the system and applications while moving the /users directory tree to the second 1Tb drive?
I'm assuming both are straight forward to do accomplish but have nagging doubts about segregating drive usage, will moving the /users directory tree to the second 1Tb drive:
impact apps which might otherwise expect to see particulat fies and directories in specific user related locations on the system drive;
hinder backing up (by having to setup two separate Time Machine activities)?
Finally, is there a better 3rt option?

The supplementary questions would arise should I NOT chose to combine the separate drives into a larger logical one but to keep one of the two drives for system/apps and the other for users data... I assumed that segregating drive usagel like this might reult in issues with apps which might expect to see some user directories/files on the same drive as the system/apps. similarly, with two physical drives, I'd be looking to managing separate Time Mchines. (I have a few 2Tb pocket drives for backups.)
Final question - if I do combine into a single logical drive (for system, apps, /users ... the whole lot), would I have any problem getting this logical one working from a Time Machine backup? I ask that this backup was taken from the 1Tb physical drive and now I'd be looking to put it back onto a 2Tb logicl drive.

One Time Machine drive for two computers

Okay I know that I can use one drive for my macbook pro and my iMac. But, I am wanting to keep both my computer connected to the drive, without having to disconnect one and then hooking up to the other. Is there a way for both computer to recognize the drive and pull from it for backups. Can a usb switch solve this problem or is there software that will work. Also if there is a way to do this I know that i will have to off set the backup time so that both computers are not writing to it at the same time. Thanks in advance,

you can't have a drive directly plugged in into two computers at once. what you can do is keep it plugged into one computer, back up that computer directly and back up the other computer over network (wireless or ethernet). you don't need to worry about overlapping backup times. the OS will take care of it itself.

I have a 1TB hard drive full of movies and TV shows, almost. When it is full, what do I do? Is there a way to set a second drive for movies and TV shows, or do I just have to buy a bigger hard drive?

I would recommend you use an excellent backup App that is capable of doing what you want, such as "Carbon Copy Cloner" or "Superduper".
