Two drives : same buffer on all hard drives ?

I just ordered a SATA Maxtor drive 300G 7200, Buffer 16Mo (model 6B300S0) to add onto the second bay of my G5 DP 1.8 Ghz.
The original drive (that will be kept in place) is also from Maxtor, 80G 7200, Buffer 8Mo.
I just went by this article from apple support "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300355".
It says
"Storage :
Two Serial ATA controllers supporting up to 150-MBps data throughput per hard drive
Two 3.5-inch hard drive expansion bays with drive guides for a second drive
One 80GB or 160GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA drive installed in standard configurations(5)
Support for up to two internal Serial ATA drives; 500GB maximum system capacity(5)
8MB memory buffers on all hard drives"
Is this "8MB memory buffers on all drives" restrictive, meaning there might problematic to have two hard drives running with different buffers ?
Thank you for any suggestion, I still have time to cancel my order and order another drive with 8 MB buffer before tomorrow..

Thank you for your reply,
As a matter of fact, the Apple report is from october 2004, and my machine from April 2005, not much further away. I have found an happy report in XRL8yourmac from sept 2004 describing no problem with the same drive in a Dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 .
The writer says it ran faster than the original 250GB Maxtor 7Y250M0 (8Mo buffer), but did not say if the two drives are running allong well or if he did replace the 250 by the 300. I understood that we cannot instal more than 500 Gig total in a G5 this generation ??
My specific question is :
Is it any reason to think that running two SATA drives with different size buffers would be problematic ?
Many thanks
Luc

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?  I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents"  I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Creative Licensing Services waking up all hard drives, even offline drives.

I wasn't sure where to post this or report a bug, but these two services seem to have incorrect behavior. They will scan every hard drive in the system, which will wake up every drive in the computer, even if the drives are set to "Offline" in Disk Management.
Creative Audio Engine Licensing Service (CTAELicensing.exe)
Creative ALchemy AL6 Licensing Service (AL6Licensing.exe)
For what purpose do these services need low level drive access to every drive in the system? I have 3 disk drives and an SSD, I like to keep my disk drives turned off for silence, but whenever these two services run, respective programs lag as the computer spins up every hard drive one at a time. I suspect this would happen to external USB drives too.
Here's a performance monitor screenshot of CTAELicensing.exe waking up all hard drives when you click the "encoder" tab of "Creative Audio Control Panel". (for Dolby Digital Live and DTS Connect)
And here's another performance monitor screenshot of AL6Licensing.exe waking up all drives when I launch an ALchemy enabled game.

Forgot to mention, I've seen this happen on Windows 7 x64 and Windows 8 CP x64 on both an X-Fi Titanium HD and a X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro.

  • Two drives with the same backup

Is it possible to have Time Machine make the same backup on two drives?
I like to have to backup sets, one stored in some other location for extra security. Ideally, I could swap backup drives every now and then, one being connected to my computer, the other being stored somewhere else.
    What do you think?

I think i managed to trick OSX 10.5.1 to accept the second Drive.
    here is what i did.
went to Disk utility and asked to verify disk ( the external drive ) of course it went thru the motion and reported that everything is ok.
when i ran TM again, it took the job and did the backup
thing is, i do not know why we cannot repair permissions on external drives !!

I found this in the F1-Help for "FOR ALL ENTRIES":
    >"In Release 6.10 and higher, the same internal table can be specified after FOR ALL ENTRIES and after INTO."
Check however if you can use a proper JOIN select. This will fill your internal table in one operation and is usually faster than a FOR ALL ENTRIES, contrary to some circulating comments here.

I'm trying to put movies onto my hard  drive but i can't put the files with the same name onto the hard drive , finder won't let me change the name. What am i doing wrong?

Make a new folder and put them in that different folder. Then the names can be the same as others already on your drive.

  • Placing all media on one or two drives?

I want to get some new larger drives to use for my photos and videos. Curious to hear anyone's thoughts on placing all of my photos and videos on a single 4TB drive vs. splitting them over two 4TB drives. I think all of my photos and videos currently will take around 2.5TB. Are there any performance gains from splitting them over two drives? Any other reasons to do this one way or another?
    Thanks.

How much free space should be left on a drive containing media for LR?
Lightroom is irrelevant to the answer. If you are doing very little with the drive other than storing photos and videos, 50GB to 100GB free ought to ensure reasonable operation. In fact, I have heard some people say 10GB free is all you need. I don't know, as I never had a disk that had so little free space on it.
If you are doing other things on the drive, like constantly writing or overwriting files (especially cache files), maybe you need more free space.

  • Backing Up Two Drives To One External Drive

    Hello!
I own a 20-inch 250GB iMac, a 1TB Western Digital External Hard Drive, and a 320GB Western Digital External Hard Drive. I recently began running out of room on my Mac, mainly because of all that I have on iTunes. Out of my 250GB I am now down to about 18GB. With this in mind, I went out and picked up a 320GB drive to pluck all my iTunes fluff on.
My 1TB drive is my current Time Machine backup for my Mac. I have been using Time Machine for quite some time and haven't had much problem at all. Today, though, is where I hit a stump. I'd like all my iTunes files to be only on the 320GB drive, and to be backed up on the 1TB drive. I also want my 250GB Mac to be backed up on the 1TB drive as well.
So my question is, can I have a Mac and a 320GB External Hard Drive both be backed up to the same 1TB External Hard Drive with the use of Time Machine? If so, do you mind explaining how exactly this would work? I tried looking at the Time Machine settings thru System Preferences, but I had no luck with my hunt there.
    Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you for the reply. I have just a few more questions if you don't mind. [:-D
Will leaving the volume format as MS-DOS (FAT) be an issue?
yes, it will. as i said, the drive must be formatted mac os extended for TM to back it up. also, FAT has manyother deficiencies with OS X and should not be used unless you absolutely have to.
My 1TB drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)... Seeing as how this is only for iTunes, should I change the volume format for this new drive? And if so, for erase options, should I choose "Don't Erase Data" or "Zero Out Data"?
do not choose the zero out data option. this is just a security measure to prevent data recovery. it's quite useless with a new drive and is mostly waste of time anyway.
I ask because this new 320GB drive came with that icky SmartWare Software already installed. I followed the steps @ http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdsmartwareutilitiesmac to remove this software, so my paranoid side is left wondering.
Also, for future reference, do you mind explaining the hierarchy here @ http://twitpic.com/14gva3 ? This is an image from my Disk Utility, and I am wondering what is the difference between the "232.9 GB..." and the "Macintosh HD", as well as the other two drives shown. I ask because, if having to format, should I worry about the "297.4 GB..." or the "disk2s1"? (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875...Do you have any idea what that is?)
everything in this pic is absolutely normal. the top one is the whole physical drive. it may have several partitions which are separate volumes and can be formatted separately. but none of your drives are partitioned.
Thanks a lot for your help!

  • How to mirror two drives

I just bought a Power Mac G5 dual core 2.3 and am running server on it. I just installed a second 250 gig drive. Both the factory and the aftermarket drives are the same size and speed. I want to mirror the two drives. My question is: Do I need to boot up from a system cd to mirror the drives in disk utility or can I do it while booted up, using disk utility?

It's been awhile, but I think you won't be able to create the RAID set using Disk Utility without booting from an install DVD or volume that is not part of the intended RAID set. Also, I believe Disk Utility will erase any files on a volume that is part of a RAID set when it is created. This means you will need to reinstall the OS and your data after creating the Raid set.
However, It is possible to add a volume and perform a rebuild using the Terminal, without having to erase the original boot volume. This has been discussed a few times in the OS X Server mail list, so you may want to subscribe and or perform a search of the list to find the info.
All that being said. The easiest approach is to have a third hard drive you can boot from, that contains a clone of your boot volume. Boot from the third disk, use Disk Utility to create the new Mirror set, then install the OS and apps.
    Good luck.

  • How to set up my mac mini server to use two drives seamlessly?

I have a mid 2010 mac mini server, with OSX Lion installed. It has dual 500gb hard drives.
I've been moving all my important files to it, and I've always assumed that once I filled one disc, it would seamlessly transfer over to the other and continue backing up. This does not seem to be the case.
I'm at roughly 495gb of data, and when I try to move a 10gb file onto my server, it tells me that I don't have enough disc space to continue the operation.
What can I do to make use of both drives?
    -Thanks

It sounds like what you're asking for is to have the two drives in a RAID 0, where the two 500 Gb drives look like a single 1 Tb drive. I'm not sure the exact procedure for installing RAID 0 on a mini's internal drives, but the process would involve backing up, reconfiguring for RAID (which destroys all data,) restoring data from the backup, and more risk than I would personally find acceptable. I'd expect to lose a full day with the backup and restore steps. I can guarantee, there will be pain.
Instead, I'd suggest looking at what's consuming the 500Gb, and seeing if there are particular folders that can be moved. For example, a shared folder is pretty easy. Copy it over. In file sharing setup, edit the share to point to the new location. Make sure remote users disconnect, and reconnect to the "new" share. When you're happy there is no data loss, delete the old location.
User's home directories can also move, but the process has a few more steps, and depends on how the accounts are built (local vs. OD)
If the majority of the data is in a single "your backup files" folder, shared or otherwise, then I would just set up a second folder on the second drive and write to it, leaving the first alone. If it is truly a backup, then you could make the first folder read-only at this point for extra protection. If you go the 2 folder route, keep in mind your boot drive is operating with 1% free space, I like my drives to have at least 15% free, and OS drives more like 25% (you'll find some range in recommended %-free, but most will agree 1% is too little) so move SOME stuff to the new folder, before closing the old.
