Two Fabric redundancy and storage flapping

Hello!
I have a fairly new Nexus 5548 implementation, using the Nexus for stricly storage. I have two 5548s for two different Fabrics, for redundancy. They are two seperate fabrics, and the Nexus are not stacked so they are managed individually. When I have both Nexus online my VMware side starts flapping, and loosing storage which causes my ESXi hosts to lock up and VMs to go unresponsive. This does not happen 100% of the time, but it happens intermitentaly and sometimes is catestrophic to datacenter services. When I shut down one of the Nexus switches, storage comes back and everything is healthy.
All hosts are connected via 4GB FC (supposedly HP cant do 8GB without problems)
5/6 of my hosts are on HP c7000 enclosures via 10gb FlexFabric switches, the rest via UCS
Netapp clustered pair is the target. When the ESXi hosts loose storage, they are still flogi'd in to the storage and fabric
ESXi 5.0 w/newest (and correct) drivers. VMWare tech support sees no problems, other than the "storage is getting pulled from the host"
Newest firmware on everything HP & UCS
Nexus running 5.0(3)N2(2a)
Using per-iniator zoning
Fabric-A and Fabric-B are different VSANs
Any ideas? Do I have a design flaw in my fabric? HP, Cisco, Netapp, and VMware all pretty much have no clue. So this forum is a shot in the dark. Thanks for ANY ideas you guys can provide

could it be some kind of trespassing on the storage array ? LUNs start balancing between the controllers and eventually the host times out. Have you tried different failover (NMP) policy in ESXi ?

  • Fabric Interconnect and storage solutions

    Dear
Please I would like to clarify a question, is that a solution of storage, such as EMC VNX5300 can be connected directly to a Fabric Interconnect, but would lose functionality when connected to a Nexus 5000 switch. I would like someone to clarify this doubt indicating that functionality is lost when direct connection would be advisable to FI or the Nexus.
    Regards

In versions of UCS earlier than 2.1, you had the  option to useDirect Attached Storage DAS with UCS. However, you needed a SAN switch connected  to the FI so the switch could push the zone database to the FI. That is,  the UCS platform was not able to build a zone database
With the release of Version 2.1, UCS now has the  ability to build its own zone database. You can have DAS with UCS  without the need for a SAN switch to push the zoning configuration
    hope this helps

  • Two 2911 routers and 3560 switches (load balancing and redundancy)

    Good day, Sir !
I have a model with hierarchical model. Two routers 2911 and two core switches 3560, two providers.
I want to design redundancy scheme. Can you advice me how is better to do it ? here you can find image with topology, can you say is it good idea to connect with devices in this way ?
Hope on you help ! Thank you !!!

    Hi,
If you want to configure redundancy in your network on LAN you can use HSRP and from the WAN side depending on the connection with the provider you can either use BGP or any IGP.
If you want to have load balancing as well with redundancy you can define differnt  HSRP group for different  vlan and on the wan with BGP you can use multipath option or with IGP you can manipulate the route matric.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Fabric with two Nexus-5548 and a brocade switch does not get fabric updates

We have a fabric containing two Nexus 5548 and a Brocade 5000 switch in interop mode 2. When i make changes to the zoning, the first nexus (the fabric principal) and the brocade switch see the zone changes. The second Nexus switch does not see it. There are no error messages but  the change just can't be seen.  What can i do to find out, what goes wrong ?

  • Connecting a Dell B22 FEX to Nexus 6001 and storage

    Hi Folks,
We have a setup where we are running a Dell B22 FEX in Blade enviornment and want to connect the B22 FEX to a cisco Nexus 6001 switch. As per NX-OS release note, B22 FEX and 6001 Nexus connectivity is supported.
Now after connecting to Nexus 6001, how do i get access to storage pool or SAN fabric ?  As per another thread of discussion, Nexus 6001 does not support direct fabric attachment at this point in time. So how do we bridge these two elements to a storage fabric ??
    As per 6.02 release note:
    "Support for DELL FEX
Added support for the Cisco Nexus B22 Dell Fabric Extender for Cisco Nexus 6000 Series switches starting with the 6.0(2)N1(2) release."
This is the exact reason we bought it. We have a enviornment where we are running Dell B22 FEX.  Idea is to connect the B22 FEX into Nexus 6001. We are confuse at this point. After connecting the Dell B22 FEX to Nexus 6001, how to access the storage network or storage fabric ??
    Thanks,

    Hi Rays,
The function should be the same for all FEXs regardless of what parent switch they connect to. to.
if you are referring to this comment:
You can connect any edge switch that leverages a link redundancy mechanism not dependent on spanning tree such as Cisco FlexLink or vPC
FelxLink is a different technology that does not use STP, but not every switch platform supports FelxLink. FlexLink is not used very often, as other technologies like VSS, VPC and stacking has emerged.

  • Oracle VM and storage network

I am running Oracle VM 3.1.1 on a server with 4 ethernet interfaces.
bond0 is setup with eth0 and eth1 and bond mode is active/backup. This bond is used by the managed network.
bond1 is setup with eth2 and eth3 and bond mode is dynamic link aggregation. This bond is used by public network.
Managed network channels: Server Management, Cluster Meartbeat and Live Migration
Public network channels: Storage and Virtual Machine
All my 7 virtual machines are installed on separte physical disk using iSCSI.
95% of my network traffic on dom0 is going though eth0, so I belive that iSCSI is not using the public network.
How can I make my VM use bond1 / public network for iSCSI traffic?
The managed nework did have storage assigned when I created the storage connection, but I have rebooted dom0 after applying the settings above. Can this be the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

It matters if the traffic is routed or not. "Routing" traffic and "switching" traffic are two different things and the "bandiwidth" rating on "routing" traffic versus "switching" traffic are considerably lower. More takes place when a "packet" is routed than when it just uses layer 2 traffic. This must be taken in consideration when planning traffic between your VM servers and its respective "storage, VMs and etc. Personally, I would never have that traffic "routed". Never. Do it if you like. I wouldn't recommend it. Any time your "hop" to a target... you introduce latency. Maybe your network fabric can handle it now... But what will happen when you start adding to your environment?
Remember the maximumn throughput on a 1 GB connection is 125mbs. Even creating a 2 member bond just gives you 250/mbs. Throw a "hop" in the mix....... I just don't like the numbers. Especially if you're going to run several VM guests on one server.
I feel your pain. Oracle VM can be a complicated product to use if you don't understand its full functionality. If you don't have your system in production.... then change it. Go through the headache now. Oracle VM works very well when it is setup properly. Very well. I just implemented a RAC environment running Oracle's ERP systems for several hundred users. It works great. Haven't had one problem since the migration. Performance is spectacular...

  • Nexus 7000 - Fabric Failure and VOQ

I have been doing some research on the Nexus 7k and from what i am reading the following occurs:
    1. Fabric Module Failure - Causes all traffic sent across that fabric modules crossbar to be lost
    2. VOQ - protects against lack of buffer availability on the egress interface
Neither of these provide reliable transmission over the crossbar or acknowledgement of data crossing the crossbar fabric.
So my question is, if i have storage traffic (unicast based FCIP) that is crossing the fabric when a fabric module fails, is my understanding correct, that those frames are lost on the portion of the fabric that is controlled by the failed fabric module?
Even though the main fabric itself is intact for other traffic, this still means that I have loss in what is supposed to be a system built for zero-loss to support storage traffic.
Am i way off here or is this accurate.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the response. From what i have read the control plane and data plane are completely isolated in the nexus 7k. The supervisor modules control the control plane and the central arbiter and the fabric modules handle the VOQ and the xbar communication.
It works like this as i understand it:
    1. packet arrives at the ingress of a line card and is passed on the port asic
    2. port asic does its thing and forwards the packet to the replication engine
    3. rep engine passes the packet onto the L2 and L3 Forwarding engines - they do their dance and pass the packet on to the fabric engine
    4. Fabric Engine and VOQ mgmr consults the central arbiters to get credits to send traffic on the fabric
    5. Central Arbiter checks the egress line card to ensure buffer space is available. If its available it grants credit to the fabric engine and VOQ engine to send the packet on the fabric.
The fabric crossbar is BW is determined by the amount of fabric modules installed - 1 FM = 23Gbs x 2. When 2 or more FM are installed to create more Fabric BW, they forwarding across the fabric for unicast traffic acts like a Etherchannel and performs some sort of hashing algorithm to send the packet across the fabric.
Lets say you have a 9216Byte packet and 3 Fabric modules installed. From what i am reading the packet would be broken up into 4 packets, around 2304 Bytes each (i think they might be 2460 can't recall), and passed across the fabric.
So you have 1 large packet, fragmented across the fabric cards, sent to the destination IO card.
While in transit, lets say one of the fabric Modules in the LB group dies. my understanding is the traffic on the trace goes with it.
The traffic is lost in this case since there is no acknowledgement of traffic sent across the fabric. I would think in a high bandwidth situtation this could be a lot of traffic, considering the speeds we are talking about here.
Is this a possibility or am i missing some redundancy here that will protect the traffic that would be lossed crossing the fabric?
Is this the case on the 65k as well for traffic crossing the fabric?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Upgrade Firmware and storage disconnect

During the firmware upgrade to version 2.0.2q everything went well until I upgraded the 6124 Interconnects.  I first upgraded the secondary then the primary.  During both upgrades the ESX Hosts reported loss of access to the datastore attached to the hosts.  The guests continued to ping which leads me to believe that the host did not really loose access because the guests run from the datastore reported as lost in vCenter.  Within 8 mins or so the storage error corrected.  My question, is this normal behavior.  Has anyone else seen this behavior during interconnect upgrades?

    Hi Joey:
Thank you for your reply.  Yes multi pathing is in place and failover does occur.  This was my test environment I did first.  I just noticed that of three hosts two reported redundancy link lost (which is normal) but one showed redundancy link and the managment network lost and access to the datastore for VM guests although VM guests continuded to ping normally.  The host however was not pinging in fact as being reported.
Anyway,  I went forward with production last night and all went as expected with only redundancy link lost during interconnect updates/reboots.  No problems.  So, I believe my test environment has a connection between the two interconnects switched around from when I first set it all up.  There have been some others working in my test area.
    Thanks again,
    Fred

  • Compliance and Storage Network Isolation

I have two tenants in a multitenant environment that access the same iSCSI array.  The iSCSI array has a limitation in that can only use one IP address on one vLAN.  the result of this is that using this array means sharing a vLAN between two tenants, even though it is a non-routed vLAN dedicated to iSCSI.  (ESXi vmkernel adapters from HA clusters in both tenants connect to the same iSCSI array).  Tenant A has no special compliance requirements, but Tenant B does.   The LUNs in the storage array are mapped only to the appropriate IPs for the appropriate ESXi servers in the respective environments to access. But will sharing this vLAN among iSCSI vmkernel ports in both tenants mean that Tenant B will be non-compliant with respect to a standard such as HIPAA?  The vmkernel ports would be in the same broadcast domain.

It matters if the traffic is routed or not. "Routing" traffic and "switching" traffic are two different things and the "bandiwidth" rating on "routing" traffic versus "switching" traffic are considerably lower. • Stock report in BW (valuated stock and Storage Location level)

    Dear All,
                Regards.We got an situation here,
Case 1:  R3 (MB5B) (Both "Storage loc" and "Valuated stock" shows the same Stock Qty)
1).The BW Stock Report shows values the Correct Values for "Receipt Qty" and "Issue Qty" with the Correct  "Quantity total Stock" aswell.
Case 2 :   R3 (MB5B) (Stock is different between "Storage Loc" and "Valuated Stock")
1).The BW Stock Report shows the  "Quantity Total Stock according to VALUATED STOCK Level(MB5B),but  the "Receipt Qty" and "Issue Qty" according to STORAGE LOCATION Level(MB5B) .
We followed the "How to Handle Inventory "Doc with the proper sequence of Loading of Infosources and Compression. The data is sitting fine at the cube level.
It would be great if someone can throw some Light on this issue,on how the Query shows a COMBO of both Valuated stock and Storage Location stock....Held up with this issue for quite sometime..Had a look at the   Oss Note (589024)...........
    Manythanks
    Arun

    HI,
In Inventory we have two quantity fields given to satisfy the requirement.
    Valuated stock Qty - 0VALSTCKQTY
    Storage Location qty - 0TOTALSTCK
You can make use of them based on your requirement. Hope this helps for you.

  • What is the best way to achieve backup and storage by combining TC and external HD?

    Hi,
By reading various posts I came to the conclusion that my recently bought 2TB TC (still in the box) needs to be combined with an external HD (not bought yet) if I want both network (WIFI) storage and safe backup.
Could someone please confirm what the best way of organising the two devices is and advice on the various steps I will need to take?
See below for some extra information:
I want to back up a Mac Book Pro with 250 GB HD and potentially a HP laptop (250 GB as well).
Can this also allow me to backup a iPad?
The storage will need to be accessible to both machines. It will mostly be pictures.
Back up should be as automated as possible, i.e. Time Machine is the obvious choice but I am open to other tools.
With regards to the external hard drive, are models like Western Digital Element or Seagatte Expansion suitable to stay plugged in the TC 24/7? Will they not overheat?
My initial idea is to use the WIFI facility of the TC box. I can use the WIFI facility of the modem/router is more appropriate.
Thank you in advance for your replies.
    Denis

The drives you are backing up are small. There is no real need to use external drive but you do need a backup if you store files on the TC.. for just backups that is not necessary.
You cannot partition the TC but you can create a disk image for using with data files.. ie the PC backup.
    Read Q3 here http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Can this also allow me to backup a iPad?
iPad is backed up to itunes.. or to cloud.. it is not able to see the TC drive at all without an app. You can manually copy files to the TC using filebrowser app but there is no auto backup software in the iPad to other than itunes.
    It will mostly be pictures.
Back up should be as automated as possible, i.e. Time Machine is the obvious choice but I am open to other tools.
So you are not backing up, you are storing files.
You cannot access files in a Time Machine backup except by restoring them to the Mac. The PC cannot see them at all. That means you are not backing up.. you are storing files, even if just copies of the files. To do that you just copy via finder or windows explorer.
There are various scripting methods to ensure these photos are synced on all the devices. .but that is not what a backup software does.
If you want to use USB drive that is fine, they can stay attached 24/7. The disk will spin down generally when not in use.
    They will not overheat.
But it is much faster to copy files to the USB drive plugged into the computer than on the TC.. the USB link on the TC is slow.. less than half the speed of the same drive on the computer.. much slower than the TC internal drive. It might be better to plug a USB drive directly into a computer.

  • Nexus 7000 Switch Fabric Redundancy with Fab-2 ?

    Hi all,
I know that N7K did not have N+1 Switch Fabric redundancy. It is required to have all five SF modules to provide full throughput. Does this change with FAB-2 modules ? I mean with new modules, does N7K have N+1 SF redundancy ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Dumlu

The N+1 fabric redundancy will depend on the type of module.
If you are using M132 (80G) per slot and you have 3x FAB-1 (46G each), it will provide N+1.
The same story applies to FAB-2. If you are using the F1 series, and have 4x FAB-2, you have N+1. Of course, if you are using F2 series linecard and have all FAB-2 populated, you don't have N+1 because F2 is 480G and all 5 FAB-2 will give you 550G.

  • MB5B Movment type and storage location is reset

When I run the report MB5B with radio button "valuated Stock" active for a specific Plant and Movement Type, I get a Message "Movement Type is reset" and then the entered Movement Type disappears from the selection criteria.
However the report does not give me this message when the radio button "Storage Location/ Batch Stock" is active.
Also, When I run the report MB5B with radio button "valuated Stock" active for a specific Plant and Storage Location, I get a Message "Storage Location is reset" and then the entered Storage Location disappears from the selection criteria.
However the report does not give me this message when the radio button "Storage Location/ Batch Stock" is active.
Please tell me why does this happen when the radio button "valuated Stock"  is active ?

    Dear All,
I am facing the problem as said in the thread.
My two queries are as follows:
Query 1:  In MB5B report When we select the valuated stock option ,We are unable to use movement type , storage location in the selection criteria nad getting the below messages.
M7284 - Storage location is reset.
    M7298 - Movement type is reset .
Query 2 :In MB5B report total receipts and total issues is showing incorrect values.
Here say for example I prepared the grn, cancelled the grn and again made the grn. Here total receipts is considering in such a way that all the grn quantities are considered. and cancelled documents are considered as issues.
ie  have received material = 100 Nos 01-12-2009
    cancelled grn:100 Nos
    Redo grn:100 Nos
    Done transfer posting 415 Q = 10 nOS = 02-12-2009
    Issued = 10 nos = 02-12-2009
    In mB5B 01-12-2009 to 02-12-2009
We are getting Opening stock= 0 which is correct
    Total receipts = 100(GRN IST TIME)+100(GR SECOND TIME) +10(TRANSFER POSTING)=210
    Total issues = 100(CANCEL GRN)10(TRANSFER POSTING)10(GOODS ISSUE) =120
    Closing stock = 90(CORRECT)
Here actual recipt: should be 100
             actual issue should be 10
Here though the closing stock is correct , 415 transfer posting is considered as issue and receipt.Becoz of this total issues quantity report is going wrong.
Please give your valuable suggestions to the above two problems seperately.

  • Service Registry: why do i need two bindings (wsdlDeployment and endPoint)

based on the technical note of Clemens Utschig "Enabling a Dynamic, Reusable SOA with Oracle BPEL Process Manager and Oracle Service Registry" i have one question:
why do i need two bindings (wsdlDeployment and endPoint) in my service in the service registry. if i only define the wsdlDeployment if get this messages:
    <2006-12-07 09:39:02,559> <FATAL> <default.collaxa.cube.ws> no endpoint found - nothing to adjust
    <2006-12-07 09:39:02,559> <WARN> <default.collaxa.cube.ws> Could not lookup base endpoint!
the problem of defining two bindings is that the url to my partner is redundant.

    Hi Clemens,
The UDDI Version 3.0.2 Specification (http://www.uddi.org/pubs/uddi_v3.htm) say this:
    B.1.2 Using the "wsdlDeployment" value
Instead of directly providing the network address in the accessPoint, it is occasionally useful or necessary to provide this information through indirect means. One common scenario for such a behavior is when the accessPoint is embedded within a WSDL file. In such a scenario, the UDDI accessPoint contains the address of the WSDL file, and the client then must retrieve the WSDL file and extract the end point address from the WSDL file itself.
In this case, decorating the UDDI accessPoint with a useType="wsdlDeployment" is appropriate. A sample of such behavior is as follows:
    <bindingTemplate bindingKey="uddi:example.org:catalog">
       <description xml:lang="en">
           Browse catalog Web service
       </description>
       <accessPoint useType="wsdlDeployment">
           http://www.example.org/CatalogWebService/catalog.wsdl
       </accessPoint>
       <categoryBag>
           <keyedReference keyName="uddi-org:types:wsdl"
           keyValue="wsdlDeployment"
           tModelKey="uddi:uddi.org:categorization:types"/>
       </categoryBag>
</bindingTemplate>In the example above, a client would be able to parse the result of the bindingTemplate and determine the end point of the Web service within the WSDL file discovered in the accessPoint element. Note that the bindingTemplate has also been categorized with the "wsdlDeployment" value from the uddi.org:categorization:types scheme so that it can be discovered through a find_binding API call.
    1) This means for me that providing one binding with useType=wsdlDeployment should be enough.
    2) Sadly the "Business Service Control" of the Service Registry (Publish new WSDL service) does not create the correct structure needed by the bpel-engine. The "Publish new WSDL service" wizard just creates one service with one binding with useType=other (http). So if i want to reuse this published service from bpel (as a service consumer) i have to switch to the "Service Registry Admin Control" and create a second binding with useType=wsdlDeployment. But i don't want the developers to get inside the "Service Registry Admin Control"! They should only work with the "Business Service Control".
All this makes the usage of the service-registry very unhandy and reduce the acceptance for developers because of unnecessary manual steps and broken security principles.
My wish for this issue is that the "Publish new WSDL service" inside the "Business Service Control" of the Service Registry would additionlly create this needed binding with useType=wsdlDeployment.

Sorry last question got knocked back my ipad and iPhone on two different levels and I am not able to play through Facebook so not able to progress or unlock next level through Apple store. Don't know how to resolve problem

Thank you again for all of your help!! I really appreciate it!
I think I am following -- I was able to upload to my iPhoto and all photos and videos are there that is a plus! I tried to create an Event in my iPhoto and put all of my photos in that event but for some reason, now my iTunes it not recognizing that Event in my iPhoto. It is not allowing me to import just that event at the moment but I may be doing something wrong. At least all of my pics and vids are in iPhoto so that is a plus and I know they are at least saved somewhere. Just for some reason, my iTunes it not locating the event that I created with only those photos.
Thank you for letting me know about my contacts! How do I know if I have the contacts app?
Also, I had no clue that my iCloud could be backed up via cellular data! However, is this a new feature with the most updated iOS?? Unforutnatly I am like 2 iOS updates behind because I don't have enough storage on my phone. I still get the notification that my phone needs to be plugged in and connected to wifi in order to back up to the cloud :-(
How can I sync using USB? Right now when i click on the info tab for my iPhone in my iTunes this is the answer that I get -- I am a little unclear as to what it means.
    Sync Contacts:
Your contacts are being synced with you iPhone over the air from iCloud. Over-the-air sync settings can be changed on you iPhone
    Sync Calendars:
