Two Family MACs

Can anyone tell me how I can get two computers in my house to work with ICHat since we only have one account? Do I need a separate email account to do this?

Hi
You will need separate accounts.
Free 60day trial(click on free trial on the top) here http://www.apple.com/dotmac/ keep your .mac name(for iChat) after the 60days.
or free AIM name here http://www.aim.com/ click on "get a screen name" no need to use their software.

If you turned off Contacts wouldnt that mean that the Contacts would no longer be backed up to iCloud as well? That would make it a pain when upgrading a phone to not easily pull contacts back down.

  • Can I set up two iphones, two I-macs, one I-pad, on ICloud and have everything in Synch?

I currently have two i-phones(IOS 5.0.1), two I-Macs(OS 10.6.8), and one I-Pad(5.0.1) syching on MobileMe.  I had to get the faamily pack of Mobile me in order to sych both phones.  How about i-cloud?  What do I have to do with these two syching accounts?

It's not clear why you needed a mobile me family pack, however your macs will need Lion before you can use iCloud.

  • Merging iPhotos from two different Macs

This is probably not a new problem. We have two family computers and we download our photos on either one. I would like to create a master library and then store it somewhere for safekeeping. (Too many natural disasters in Texas!)
First, how should I consolidate all my photos (must be 70-80K) into one library
Second, where should I store it?
Third, how can I avoid this in the future?
    okay, thanks!!

to merge libraries you use Aperture or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager
where to store them - where ever you please as long as the hard drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - Personally I believe you need at least two copies in different locations for safety
How can you avoid this in the future? do all of your photos work on one computer
Next year with the new photos app and with iCloud library there probably will be a better solution - but until the software is released no one will know exactly what it will have or exactly how it will work

  • Isight with family .Mac account

When I open ichat buddy list, it shows me "on line" but as soon as my wife opens her buddy list, it automatically turns me "off line" and she is now "on line". If I immediately close ichat and re-open it, she goes "off line" and I'm now "on line", Is there a way we can video conference each other using the family .Mac, which permits multiples accounts?

Are you two each trying to use the same AIM or .mac screen name at the same time? If so ... don't. Each of you should get your own unique AIM (or .mac) account. The AIM screen names are free, so why not? You can read more about this in the iChat forum.

  • HT201250 Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?

Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?
I have one 1T Western Digital backup drive that works well with Time Machine and my MacBook Pro.  I now want to back up my wife's MacBook Air using Time Machine on her Mac and want to know if I can use the same WD external drive or if I need to get a 2nd back up drive?  If I can use one external drive for the two Macs do I need to do something special on the drive or will Time Machine do it automatically?

Yes. You will need to configure Time Machine preferences on each computer to backup to the same drive. Note that you cannot connect the backup drive to both machines at the same time.

  • Can i use ichat between two separate macs on the same mobile me account?

Can i use ichat over two separate macs on the same mobile me account?
I have an imac at home and may be getting a macbook for work. Can i use my mobile me account to chat between the two macs or would i need a mobile me account per mac??

    Hi,
    No.
You need two names that can login into AIM.
In iChat you can use the Get an iChat Account which shows after you use the Plus Button in Accounts.
This will give you a free @mac.com Name
    AIM Names are also free.

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
    4. Click on the Erase tab.
    5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    7. Click the Partition tab.
    8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
    9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    10. Click Apply.
    11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

  • Syncing two iphoto libraries on two different macs

    Hey
Can't seem to find an answer to this one so here goes. I am trying to sync my iphoto libraries that I have on two different macs of mine. One a mac pro and one a macbook. Both are running 10.5.7 and iphoto 8 with all the updates. I have sharing on enabled on both macs and in iphoto. I can do a manual drag and drop but I have 1000's of photos and that would take way to long to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated
    Thanks

Use iPhoto Library Manager to move Events/Albums/Pics plus associated metadata between Libraries.

  • How to publish from iWeb to two different .mac accounts

my household has two separate .macs account and we want to publish from iWeb to the two different accounts which I cannot figure out. thanks

I discovered I could duplicate Domain.sites2 (~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2). I named one "Domain de.sites2", and the other "Domain daru.sites2". Then I opened daru's site and deleted de's, then I opened de's and deleted daru's, and I have two separate sites (with aliases in the dock) that I presume I'll be able to upload separately. Once I get .Mac sub groups created...
If it works, it saves the hassle of creating other user accounts, since only my wife and I use the computer. Right now, .Mac is telling me I can't create a sub account in my wife's name because she already has a .Mac ID (and a two month free trial account she had to agree to, to join the group) for a group site I manage. I don't think she ought to be required to have a separate identity every time she logs into .Mac.

  • Linking two remote Macs

I have a basic question about linking two remote Macs over the internet. Here's the situation...
I live in Maryland and my brother in South Carolina. We would like to be able to exchange large files easily. I've managed to do this using sftp from the terminal, but what I would really love is if I could get his remote disk to show up as a folder on my desktop (in the Finder).
Is there a way to do this (that isn't too expensive)?
    Eric

Is there a way to do this (that isn't too expensive)?
This method is free, I am assuming that as you have been using sftp your also familiar with SSH.
You can mount an afp volume over the internet through an SSH tunnel.
Turn on file sharing on the remote mac. Then you can ssh into it using a listening port. here is the syntax
    ssh user@server -L 5548:127.0.0.1:548
Then once the tunnel is connected you choose from your finder 'command +k' amd in the connect to server window use
    afp://localhost:5548
This will then prompt you to login and then the sharepoint will mount on your desktop as if it were a local volume.
The only issue you have is that the finder can become very slow and unresponsive when using network volumes over low bandwidth.

Works OK on Macbook air with current OSX
    HELP.....Please??

    IT WORKS!
Though it doesn't tell you this in the password error message, the problem IS the new Apple ID password requirements.
FIRST go to https://iforgot.apple.com/ and CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD.  In my case, my old password didn't use at least one capital (upper case) letter, and that was preventing the whole thing from working.  When all the little password criteria lights are green, you're good.  Save as you exit your browser if it asks you to.
Then open Mail, preferences, accounts, and click on the plus sign to create a new account called iCloud Mail.
These are the settings I used:
    Account settings:
    Description: iCloud Mail
    email address:  [email protected]
    Full Name:  John Doe
    incoming Mail Server: imap.mail.me.com
    User Name:  John Doe
password: (enter new Apple ID password)
    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.mail.me.com
    Server settings:
    Server port: 587
check box Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) yes, check it
    Authentication:  Password
    User Name: [email protected]
Password: enter new Apple ID password
    Click on Advanced tab:
    Check "Enable this account"
Check "Include when automatically checking for mail
    ignore Compact mailboxes automatically
    Check Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes
    IMAP path prefix: leave blank
    Port: 993
    Check Use SSL
    Authentication: Password
Be sure to save the settings when asked after you close the accounts window.
O.K., this little part may be a complete coincidence, but in mail, nothing happened when I hit "get mail".  Then, when I clicked on the little "broken" icon on iCloud mail on the left, it sprang to life and imported all my mail from iCloud.  However, as I say, that may have been unnecessary and a complete coincidence of timing as I had hit "get mail" previously.
If that doesn't work, try shaking dried chicken bones tied with cat gut over your machine.
    Best of luck!

  • Bootcamp is different on two identical Mac Pro 2013 towers, Windows 7 vs 8

OK, so we bought two identical Mac Pro 2013 towers, took them out of the box and updated the system, and checked to see if could use Bootcamp.  Hopefully to install Windows 7, but, failing that, Windows 8.  We got two different results:
One of the machines says only Windows 8 can be installed, but the other has a dialog about Windows 7.
The only difference here is that I messed around with the partitions on the second one.  I may have jumped the gun and called one partition "BOOTCAMP" before being advised not to do so and attempting to get rid of that partition.  My partition attempts have led to that system dialog...
What's the reason these two are different?  IS it possible to install Windows 7?
