Two Hard Drives, One Machine ...?

Along the same lines as this topic ... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1304890 ...
If I were to do this on the new MacBook Pros, what would one suggest to use for a hard drive? Also, if there is no firewire on the new MacBook Pros, does the speed of the external machine degrade if it's going over the USB?
I apologize if this isn't the most suitable category, but I thought it is related to an initial install I would do.

Hi Ascension;
First of all the MBP does have Firewire 800. If you buy a drive that supports FW800 you will get the best performance from your external drive.
If you attempt to use USB there will be a noticeable degradation in performance. USB is not able to transfer data well at disk rates. It is more suited to keyboard and mouse rates.
I like my OWC Mercury Elite Pro which I am currently using on FW800 with good performance.

  • Itunes / Two Hard Drives / One Portable Computer

Hi. I have Itunes installed on my Mac Book Pro. My entire library is stored in an external hard drive in my home (library is pretty big 600GB.) I have an external hard drive in my office which is unused. I am looking for a way to get to listen to my music library at the office. This means one of the following:
    1) Get to upload it somewhere in the internet and listen from there. Hopefully keeping my wallet happy.
    2) A way to transfer it from one hard drive to another wither having them in the same room, network, or zip code for that matter.
    4) Some kind of software that will make a backup (uncompressed) of my itunes library folder online and then I can restore it back at the office to my external hard drive there... allowing me to add changes incrementally.
    5) A great idea from anyone out there to solve my problem.
    Any ideas...?

  • QuickTime Pro on my two hard drives one Mac

I have QT Pro on my Panther Hard Drive, and I have Tiger on a 2nd HD on the same Mac, is it possible to use the QT pro I've already purchased on the Tiger HD? Thought I'd ask before I purchased the same QT again. Don't want to install Tiger over my Panther, because I really don't like Tiger and since Panther isn't broken, I don't want to fix it.
    Patt

I thought as much, but a gal and hope. I've have already pruchased a 2nd QTPro key.
Thanks David for taking the time to answer my question.
I've checked the question as answered, I hope you get the credit, but when I clicked on the "solved" option I got this message back. "Error An error in the system has occurred. Please contact the system administrator if the problem persists. Again, one can hope.

  • Two hard drives one profile?

I decided to take the plunge with my 2011 macbook pro (model 8.2, 8gb of ram, Mavericks 10.9.1) and do the optical drive swap out. After some hassle, I got it booted up. I put the OS on my ssd (120gb Crucial m500), then I used migration assistant to transfer my apps and about 500mb of the "other data" form my original hard drive (500gb stock toshiba). Uppon getting thing up and running & logged in, I tired to access my documents & other folders, but they had been sealed, as though I was trying to look at them from another profile.
I would like to be able to access these from my ssd, yet have them remain on the hdd. further more, i'd like to have my downloads folder go to my hdd. as well as keeping my aperture & itunes libraries on my hdd but using the aplication from the ssd.
    any thoughts?

How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • Using two hard drives - one external and one internal

As my macbook pro only has 100 gig HD I keep my most recent photos on that HD and edit the photos when I have the time on travel. I then have a 500gig external firewire drive with older photos. My question is two fold
    1. Do I have to keep re-setting the preference for the startup library to switch between the two or can I see both at the same time?
    2. At this point I can only see one library at the time, how then can I move my current images into the external drive, or asked another way, how can I merge the two libraries?
I receive version 2.0 today, but I can't think I am the only one with this issue, nevertheless, I can't find much about the topic.
    Thanks for your help

The biggest reason I wanted to do it was that for 2007 I took all my photos and put them in a project by month - so I have 12 project folders taking up all this space. Whereas, my older years, going back to 2002, they are in folders for each month in a project for the year. I did this when I bought aperture and moved my files over from Nikon View. All my other years where on my other library and my 2007 was on my library on the computer. So essentially I'd like to collapse the 2007 projects into one main area.
    Make sense?
Thanks for al your help. What a great resource.

  • I have two hard drives one SSD, one HDD. How do I make programs on the two HDs appear in one applications folder?

I am use to windows when you install a program regardless of where is it install it will appear in the programs part of start.  I was wondering if there is a way to do something similar on mac?

    Two things -
You really should only install programs in the /Applications folder on your system HD.  Installing them in other locations is an invitation to problems.
OS X isn't Windows and there is no "Start Menu".   If you want to see all applications you can do that by opening the /Applications folder that is by default on your Dock.  The second way is to open the OS X Launchpad. But your applications need to be in the /Applications folder to begin with.  You can also use the Dock to see or access any or all of your applications.  Just drag them from the /Applications folder directly to the Dock.   The "icons" in the Dock are actually aliases to the actual applications.  There are also third-party Dock replacements or enhancements that do more than what the OS X Dock does itself.

  • Two hard drives connected to Airport Extreme. How to include one of them in TimeMachine Backup and use other disc as Time Machine backup disc?

    Hi,
the title says it all. I've got an airport extreme and two hard drives connected to it. My idea was to use one as my additional storage (say DISC STORAGE) and the other one as my backup drive (say DISC BACKUP). I would like to backup my mac AND DISC STORAGE together to DISC BACKUP using time machine. My mac has 256 GB HDD, DISC STORAGE is 1 TB big, DISC BACKUP 2 TB. So there are no space issues.
Problem: DISC STORAGE is not included in Time Machine's backup to DISC BACKUP. At the moment, only the mac is backed up to DISC BACKUP.
Does anybody know if and how I can include DISC STORAGE in the backup process?
By the way, DISC STORAGE is not listed in the "exclude from backup" list in Time Machine.
    Thanks!
    Arne

Unforrtunately, Time Machine cannot backup from a network drive to another drive. Time Machine will only backup a Mac and a drive that is directly attached to the Mac, via USB or FireWire.
You will need to use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SupoerDuper to be able to backup from DISC BACKUP to DISC STORAGE.

  • How can I split a backup on two hard drives with Time Machine ?

Back-up of my Imac with time machine is 1,3 TB. I have two 1 TB external hard drives but even if I had both as available in Time machine, it seems it doesn't allow to split the backup between the two hard drives. Any way to resolve this without buying another hard drive with more space?
    Thanks in advance

You cannot directly split a backup. Your only option would be to open the TimeMachine preferences from System Prefs. and add things to the exclusion list for one of the backups. Then, when you go to do the other backup you would reverse the process and add everything else to the exclusion list and remove the things you had on there in the first place.
Seems fairly intensive though when you could just go and buy a 2 or 3TB external drive and do it all in one...Black Friday is coming up

  • Operating system not found when deploying to machines with two hard drives using MDT 2013.

Computers with two hard drives will not boot after the install OS step in the task sequence.  I get the "An operating system wasn't found.  Try removing drives that don't contain an operating system" error.  I am able to get the
machine to boot by swapping the hard drives' boot order, but the  task sequence won't complete after this.  The deployment works fine on machines with one hard drive, and I'm not getting any errors from the task sequence.  I'm deploying windows7
enterprise x64 using MDT2013.  This is a new custom image and task sequence generated using MDT2013.  I can't remove the second hard drive because there are scripts that run on the second hard drive during deployment and also because I don't desire
to remove and re-install 250 hard drives.  I've not experienced this problem with earlier versions of MDT.

The bdd.log file you sent does not show two internal drives, it shows only one.

  • Two hard drives with time machine?

I have two external hard drives: one at work, and one at home. Can I have time machine running on both, so that I have a complete backup in both places? If so, how?

Sure. Each will be complete, but independent, if that makes sense.
You will have to tell TM each time you swap them, however, via TM's Preferences > Change Disk.
The first time you do a backup to each, it will be a full one, of everything on your system. When you swap, the next backup on the swapped drive will be lengthy, but contain all the changes since the last backup to that disk.
Do be careful, however, not to go more than about 10 days without a backup to each disk, as TM may do a new, full backup after that long.

  • Two hard drive icons on my desktop, would like to have only one...

Hello  everyone, I recently got a PowerMac G5 (I think it's a 2.3 GHz). It came with a hard drive inserted 'Untitled', which came from my old 1.6 GHz G5. On the desktop though, I get two hard drive icons, my main start up drive called 'Untitled', and another one called 'Spare'. I was told that my G5 has only one drive inserted 'Untitled', so I'm trying to either get rid of 'Spare', or merge it somehow into 'Untitled'. Under the Volumes folder, I was not really able to get rid of it, is this something to do with Disk Utility?
BDAqua - under Get Info, when I was on Leopard, I tried changing a User Permissions category called 'Everybody' from Read Only to Read and Write. Upon restart two days later, Leopard would not start up (loads of writing on the screen, with the Mac power button, asking me to restart). To cut a long story, I am now back on Tiger lol (Leopard issues for another discussion lol), so now I dare not play with anything which says Read Only, especially when it's probably not even necessary. I am writing this from the library, so don't know what exactly it says in Get Info - User Permissions for either drive at the moment. If this is relevant, I can have a look later and post back, I'll also verify permissions in Disk Utility for both drives, but I think they are fine. Actually, when I was on Leopard, my 'Untitled' drive took ages to verify permissions, and always loads of writing appeared! Now that I'm on Tiger, the other day when I verified Disk Permissions, it was quick and fine!
    Thank you
In the screen shots, 'Untitled' is model ST31, 'Spare' is model WDC

Hi BDAqua, sorry I should have just opened it in the first place! I don't know why that man told me there was only one hard drive inside, perhaps a misunderstanding.
It seems that there are actually two hard drives inside, one in A, and one in B (see photo)! So, if this is the case, I don't have a problem with the two hard drive icons.
I guess if a G5 shows two hard drives on the desktop, then there's two hard drives in the machine!
    Thanks for helping anyway.

Possibly by using an Airport Express, but depends on what type of port connection the printer requires.

  • Two Hard Drives on my computer - one totally full the other totally empty - how do I manage this - windows 8

Hi I have two hard drives on my computer running Windows 8. One is called OS (C:) and has 10.2GB free of 186GB, the other is Data (D:) and has 258GB of 258GB free.

Do the HD icons appear on your Desktop?
If not, adjust your Finder preferences:
Also check "Hard Disks" if you want your internal HD to appear on the Desktop.
Open one, open the other, should be no problem.
