Two HDDs on a Mac Pro to work off two different OS

Good Morning... I have a early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 and it has two internal HDDs and 10GB(2x4GB & 2x1GB) RAM; one HDD which is 500GB is the main HDD for the kids plus wife and the 2TB HDD I want for my music & etc... Now my question is how can I be able to operate the second HDD (2TB) without the kids and wife having a way to access that drive? And as far as partitioning the 2TB, I've done so but it's not showing up on the desktop with an image... Can someone help me get this problem solved? Thank you!!

Mac OS X is inherently a Multi-User system.
Each user should have their own account, with a password. There is also a picture associated with each account, and non-Readers should be trained to recognize an Icon or a picture of themselves. (Whether each User keeps their password completely secret is up to you.)
Once this is implemented, other users have no access to your files.
Mac OS X keeps Sytem Information completely separate from User information. For the most part, the System Information does not change. Preferences are stored in User Accounts, not with the System.
Unless you really need multiple versions of Different Mac OS X, there is no need to have separate Boot Drives for different users. There is an optimization that can be made that uses the System on a different drive from Users files. It is described in this tip:

For some reason, the Flash Player on my MAC Pro stopped working, I've checked the install on my Adobe Flash Player and the are current, but the plug-ins don't seem to be working.  Can anyone help me get it working?

It happened w/ my MacPro 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon about 5 months ago; tried everything I could think of including multiple downloads of Flash, and hadn't seen any solutions here.  Adobe insisted many times that I download & update, but the newest vers. wouldn't work on the computer.
On checking Adobe/Flash was reading the computer as being an earlier model. So the new version of Flash wouldn't work w/ it.  Snow Leopard 10.6.8 was being read correctly but not the computer model (can't remember what MP model  it was reading).
Nothing worked. So -- a very old PC trick: If nothing else works get the hammer out and bludgeon it-- might work. So I reset everything by putting the Snow Leopard  install disk in, held down 'C' on restart and let it run.
Didn't take anything off the HDD first, just ran the install disk over everything.
The experts on the forums are probably cringing right now & I'd like very much for them to jump in. Love to know how my computer model was being mis-read. All I can say is, for the brave and desparate, it worked for me. Something to keep in mind.
It helped that I had a new computer on order & have 2 backups, one being mandatory. Might work only the one time but worth a check.
Good luck on working this one out.

  • Two users on new Mac Pro?

Hello, I am considering a new Mac Pro.  My wife and I both have separate Mac's now.  My question is with the new Mac Pro, can I have two user accounts (hers and mine) on the same machine that we can use at the same time?  More specifically, this would include two different monitors, two different keyboard/mouse set ups, etc.  We sit on opposite sides of the desk, but I am considering the Mac Pro as a central unit for the both of us.  We are usually in the PC room together and doing whatever we do at the same time.  Thanks!

Using the same Mac at different times is really simple -- just add another account and log in as one account or the other.
Using the same Mac at exactly the same time is very complex to set up. It involves using Virtualization software to simulate a second machine running on the first machine.
I recommend you NOT do that. I expect what you are doing is not CPU or Graphics intensive and you would be better served by having two more-ordinary Macs that are independent.

My mac pro suddenly turned off by itself, then after 10 minutes it started to work again with "no battery available" icon and an always-running fan!

  • If i previously had my iTunes library set up on an external hard drive, how do I get my iTunes on my new mac pro to operate off of the same hard drive?

I recently bought a mac pro. I previously had a macbook that I had set up for iTunes to run off of an external hard drive. How do I set up my mac pro to run off of this hard drive?  I have been trying to figure it out for the last hour and have had no luck.
I have tried to move my itunes folder on my mac pro to my external hard drive but am having no luck. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

If you had the entire library running from the external drive it should be a matter of holding down option as you start iTunes and browsing to the library on the external drive.
If you'd followed the advice to move the media folder only then ideally you need to recover the library folder from your Macbook with a view to making the library portable on the external drive.
Otherwise you're going to have to simply import the content into a new library, losing rating, playlists, play counts. etc.
If you have any devices that sync to your library see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Mac Pro FireWire does not switch off even when Mac Pro is switched off

    Hi,
got my new Mac Pro with 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon last week!
Found out today, that the firewire connection both on the frontside as well on the backside
keeps beeing powered even if the Mac Pro is switched off!
Is this a new features as my old Mac Pro (2x2.0 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) did not have this feature?
If yes, why is this so? For what is it good for?
Thanks for your comments? If you have the same new Mac Pro maybe you can check out and let me know if this feature is also on your Mac Pro seen.
    Thommy

    Hi,
called to the apple hotline and got informed that the so called "residual current" is normal at the MAC Pro. Sometimes the USB Ports sometimes the FireWire Ports keep been powered continously even the machine is switched off.
Apple told me further that I can use a connection plug board with a central switch to solve my issue.
I will close now the subject! Thanks veryone for all your help here!

Reset the SMC and then test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Otherwise as the other folks indicated, its time for diagnostics / service. Make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.

  • Can I use a Windows internal HDD on my Mac Pro? (No Bootcamp)

Hey, I have a mac pro early 2008 I believe and it has a 500gb hdd with osx installed not sure which version. Anyways, I ordered a 1tb hdd and I was wondering if I could just install it in the primary hdd slot and install windows on it straight up with no bootcamp or anything. Would that work, just booting and installing a new hdd with windows on my mac pro? If so what else would I need to know to get the best performance, and if it is possible could I still switch to my second hdd that'srunning ios and is also installed and use it as a mac when I want? Please let me know, looking to install soon.

For that you need the Boot Camp control panel in Windows.
If you want NTFS (but not as startup disk option) then buy Paragon's - it has its own startup disk but often does not see the Windows hdd. I blame some of it on Apple's proprietary one-off EFI implementation which is different from the UEFI Intel, Microsfosft and others have used.
Use the Option and try BootChamp (never used it myself).
Of course if OS X isn't present it seems to immediately boot Windows for me.
you should be able to find Boot Camp 3.x or above to download and install inside Windows.

  • Two Apple Displays and Mac Pro - How To Set Up?

Hello! My boyfriend surprised me yesterday with a second 23" Apple HD Display! Fed Ex delivered it and I had no idea it was coming! Before I take the plunge I need to know how to set it up so it works as with my current Mac Pro and 23" display so that they work together, as one big screen. I have the ATi X1900 graphics card with 512mg of RAM and two DVI ports and assume that will be sufficient to run both displays.
Is it possible to use them as one large screen? If so, how do I set that up? If I just plug it in and restart, will the two screens work as one or as separate screens?
    Thanks!
    Lisa

I did the same thing last night, and if you haven't just plugged it in already, it's really as simple as that.
I get a little video glitch on my main startup screen when I'm booting up, but otherwise it just works smoothly. Plug it in, and go.

  • Can I use two graphics card in Mac Pro

In order to use the CUDA advantage in Adobe Premiere Pro I bought an NVIDA Quadro FX4800. The original graphics processor in my Mac Pro (mid2010) is a ATI Radeon HD 5770. Can I use both cards? How do I ensure that Premiere is using the CUDA architecture if both cards are installed? Does a graphics card work if no monitor is attached to it?

Newer cards have minidisplay port and then use MDP to DVI (active dual link for higher resolution).
Yes you can have an ATI and Quadro or GTX.
Most people, based on cost/performance go with newest Nvidia instead.
You can run up against the limits of having two 6-pin aux power connections available.

  • Bought internal bluetooth card in 5 year old Mac Pro; not working right?

Bought internal bluetooth adaptor for my 5 year old Mac Pro. It searches for bluetooth devices, but dosn't find bluetooth devices; any advice?
I secured it interlanly with the two screws supplied. Had replacement card sent out, but same thing?
Using it with Apple Magic Mouse. I know mouse works as I tried it on friends new iMac.
Using latest Snow Leopard, and have seperate boot drive with Lion. Dosn't work on either.
Bluetooth ikon shoes in bar at top, and all software functions normally, just dosn't detect anything?
    Thanks.

    Try smc and pram reset.

  • Advantage/disadvantage two graphics cards in Mac Pro?

I'm working on an unfamiliar edit suite.  They've installed two graphics cards in a late model Mac Pro.  The second monitor isn't responding properly ... it's a black screen when it is supposed to be a full screen display of whatever is on the timeline.
A Mac Tech support article says: "Final Cut Studio applications may exhibit unexpected behaviors when used on a Mac Pro that has more than one graphics card.  Unexpected behaviors may include rendering issues, Digital Cinema Desktop display issues, and window display issues."
The Tech support article says to pull one of the graphics cards.
This isn't my system.  What is the advantage to having two graphics cards in a Mac Pro?
I want to pull one to make the 2nd monitor respond correctly.  But I have to justify this to the owners of the suite.
    All ears,
    Ben

    Hi guys,
I disconnected one card.  Working with a single monitor there are is no more crashing with FCP.  The card I'm using has a DVI out and two miniDisplayPorts.  I'm looking around for an adaptor (or two) to go with the two miniDisplayPort outs.  The card is an ATI RADEON 5770; I think it will support up to three monitors, two for sure.
There is no one in the suite here at present ... I've been poking around for the adaptors.  I think canceling out the second graphics card may solve all my problems.
Thank you kindly for your help,
    Ben

  • 6x HDDS in a MAC Pro (2010)

    Dear all,
I was wondering whether it was possible to install 4x 2TB Black Caviar and 2x SSD drive in a dual Mini-mount in one optical drive space?
    Thanks

    Hi Steve,
Firstly, I cannot offer any advice regarding Parallels or VM Fusion, because I am in the very, very fortunate position of not having to use Windows in any way, shape, or form on my system!
However, I did look into the possibility of installing 2 SSDs in the lower optical drive bay before I ordered my Mercury Pro RE SSD, because I already had a Vertex EX SSD, and I would have preferred to have both SSDs bootable via SATA.
I had an exchange of emails with OWC, and it is possible.
    Firstly, you need an OWC Multi-Mount 2.5" to 3.5" (x2) and 3.5" to 5.25" bracket set ($39.99):
    http://eshop.macsales.com/owcpages/multimount/multimount.html
However, the 2009 Mac Pro only has spare cables for one device in the lower optical bay, and I assume that the 2010 model is the same.
OWC can supply internal cables for the second SSD, and the 2009 Mac Pro has one spare SATA port on its logic board.
However, I decided to install just the Mercury Pro RE SSD in the lower optical drive bay, using the existing cables, and to use the Vertex EX (inside an Icy Dock SSD & SATA HDD Converter) externally in a Voyager Q dock connected to a NewerTech MAXPower eSATA card instead:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/Reviews-MAXPowereSATA6G.html
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MXPCIE6GS2/
The disadvantage of this card is that it does not support booting on the Mac platform.
However, there are other options, and one is to use a Newer Technology eSATA Extender Cable:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MPQXES2/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macpro2009esata/
This connects to the extra SATA port on the Mac Pro's logic board, and has the advantage that the external drive is bootable on the Mac platform.
On reflection, I might still order an OWC Multi-Mount 2.5" to 3.5" (x2) and 3.5" to 5.25" bracket set, plus internal cables, and have two internal bootable SSDs.
Hope some of the above is of help.
    Regards,
    Bill
