Two iMacs and icloud?

I am going to be helping a friend out by working out how to back up his mac mini server to the icloud or to some other cloud service. He has along side the mini server a iMac 27 which he uses for this design work ( backed up onto the mini). Also he has an iMac 24 at home which connects to the mini via a VPN but is wanting to use a cloud technology so that if he works on a indesign document at work he can continue it at home without the use of hard drives, flashy sticks etc. The icloud  seems to only deal with iWork document and photos, any possiblibly that it will take many Gigs of project work (photoshop, illustrator).
If not then what will another solution be?
Thanks
Phil

Check system preferences and see if you are signed in to MobileMe on the mini.

My iPad camera photos will wirelessly sync with my iMac and iCLoud photo stream, but the videos do not, is USB connection the only way to transfer videos or is there also a wireless method?

Videos are not included with the Photo Stream. Photo Stream is for photos only.
There is not a wireless method for importing videos from the iPad's Camera Roll.

  • Photos on my iMac and iCloud

I have a few questions about photos and iCloud: (1) is it possible to view the photos on my iMac (taken before iCloud) on another device (a PC, my iPhone)?  If so, how? (2) some photos downloaded on the iMac are not showing up on my iPhone photo stream
Thanks in advance for your answers!

  • Love triangle between two iMacs and a trackpad

We have two iMacs side by side, Wallace and Gromit, each with an Apple wireless keyboard and Magic trackpad.  Wallace started ignoring its trackpad -- it would not "discover" it no matter how much the trackpad tried to connect.  We checked, tested and replaced batteries, to no effect.  We then pulled out an old Magic mouse we had used (the kind with the flat, curved top) and Wallace accepted the mouse's bluetooth connection immediately.
You might think that Wallace's trackpad's bluetooth had just conked out, but Gromit then began persistently asking if we wanted it to connect with Wallace's trackpad, which is still sitting next to Wallace, powered on but ignored by Wallace.
In other words, Wallace is miffed with its own trackpad and is ignoring it, while Gromit, although has its own perfectly good trackpad, has developed a wandering eye, and wants to connect with Wallace's trackpad. Wallace's trackpad's bluetooth, of course, is working, because it is sending come-hither signals to Gromit.
We know which trackpad was connected to which computer, because we wrote their names on the undersides when we installed them.  In any case, Gromit's trackpad still faithfully works with Gromit, and Wallace will discover and connect with its old mouse, but completely ignores its trackpad, which is lonely and despondent and is desperately signaling to Gromit that it wants to set up housekeeping with Gromit.
How can we restore the happy, stable relationship between Wallace and its trackpad?

    Hi rrobbi,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like Wallace may need a little therapy in the form of resetting the PRAM and the SMC.  Instructions for doing that can be found here:

There are some additional troubleshooting steps in this article, but it sounds like you've pretty well isolated the issue down to being with Wallace's bluetooth records already:

  • BT Yahoo mail no longer syncs between two iMac and MacBook

I've used BT Yahoo Mail on an iMac, Macbook and iPad successfully for some time with IMAP settings.  Following recent upgrades, the inbox is no longer kept in sync on the different computers.  Messages read on one computer are not marked as read on the other, and newly arrived incoming mail is not displayed on the second computer, having appeared on the first.  The only solution seems to be to rebuild the mailbox - tedious as it takes time, and you don't know until you try whether there is mail to be synced.
I'm using Mail 6.5 (1508) on the iMac, and Mail 5.3 (1283) on the MacBook.
Is there any solution to this please?
    Thanks.

  • I have two IMacs and I want to set them up so i can use one keyboard and mouse-   How do i make this happen?

How do i make it happen so I can use two seperate iMac computers as one set-up with one keyboard and one mouse?

If the keyboard and mouse are wired, then a USB KVM switch will work.
If they are wireless, you should be able to connect the wirelessly via Bluetooth settings. discover the same keyboard and mouse on each iMac.
However, you cannot use them on each iMac simultaneously. I think it would be rather difficult for you to switch between them (disconnecting and reconnecting them over and over again).
Most iMacs come shipped with a keyboard and mouse by default. How come you only have one keyboard?
Keyboards and mice are not that expensive either.

  • Photo stream is different on two devices and iCloud

My wife updated her iPhone 5s and iPad 3 from iOS 7 to ios8 and when the update had installed all her photo's were missing from her iPad.  The iPhone was fine.  Gradually 35 pics from 2012 appeared from her photo stream onto her iPad but then that's it.  I logged in to her iCloud account via a browser from my macbook and only the 35 pics from 2012 appear in her photo stream there, however as I said before there are 924 pics on her iPhone that are stored in her photo stream album.  How come they are different?  How can I get photo stream to sync across both devices without the risk of losing any pics?
nb.  It's the same iCloud account on all devices and photo stream is turned on etc. on both devices.

  • Two iMacs and a Time Capsule

I moved from a pc to a Mac recently and my wife loved it so much that we've now both moved to Macs. Mine though has all the music and photos (Photoshop) and addresses on etc. It's connected to a Time Capsule. There's an Air Port to extend the signal to the second iMac. A couple of questions - can we share the music and photos etc from the first Mac. If we can, can we then update say, our music, on either iMac, or only on the original? Thanks

I got pointed by a friend to file sharing so will give this a go - although would still be interested to know if I can use the Time Capsule as a shared hard drive for both macs

  • Using Mt Lion, I find that my trash removal doesn't work on any of my iMacs. (two iMac and one Mac Air)

Using Mt Lion, 10.8.3, I find that my trash removal doesn't work on eithe unlocked or locked files. I have tries manuelly unlocking files and even that doesn't work. The trash disposal goes through the motions of counting the files and, then, doing the file subtaction from the count and at the end, it starts to go into negative numbers and never stops. However, nothing has happened to the trash.  What's going on and how do I correct it. I have tries clean installs of the operating system and still nothing changes.

Relaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
    Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced
and uncheck the box marked Empty Trash securely. Try again to empty the Trash.

  • Is it possible for two people to use one iMac with iPhone and iPad separate iTunes and iCloud acc?

Apologies if this is a very obvious question. I have one iMac that my husband and I use, he has an iPhone that he syncs with the iMac via iTunes for app such as docs to go. I recently purchased an iPad, I want to also sync with the iMac. Is it possible to use two iTunes and two iCloud acc to one iMac? We would like to pick and choose what we sync as we keep separate docs etc on the iMac, can this be done?

Yes.  Just set up your own account in System Preferences > Accounts (User &groups in Mountain Lion).  You'll have your own seperate everything including mail.

  • How do we sync contacts and calendars (ONLY) between two iCloud accounts, two iPhones and one iMac with two user accounts?

This is complex.  Until today we had one iMac with two user accounts - one for me and the other for my wife.  We sync'd our calendars and contacts between our two user accounts using my iCloud account, thereby keeping our schedules coordinated and our contacts information always the same between us.  Also, as I had an iPhone, I sync'd my phone with my iCloud account, thereby keeping the contacts and calendars in the two user accounts on the iMac AND my iPhone sync'd.  (I also sync'd other things, like Notes and Mail and Safari settings, between my iPhone and my user account on the iMac, but my wife did not want to be burdened with all my emails showing up in her email account and I wasn't interested in hers, etc., so we didn't sync anything between us other than calendars and contacts.)
We've finally bought my wife an iPhone and set up an iCloud account for her.  And of course she now wants to sync several items from HER account on our iMac to HER iPhone, but I don't want them, just as she doesn't want all of my other stuff.  But we still want our mutual calendars and contacts to sync to HER new iPhone, just like they already do to mine.  But I can't figure out how to CHANGE her iMac user account from using MY iCloud account on the iMac to using HER new iCloud account, and then having HER iCloud account speak to MY iCloud account but share JUST our calendars and contacts.
Originally I tried a workaround by simply having her iPhone log into my iCloud account.  That works great for the calendars and the contacts.  But...she can't sync anything else from her iMac account to her new iPhone because she's presently "forced" to use my iCloud account.  And neither of us want to sync our other things to each other's iMac accounts or iPhones.  Also as we're both using my iCloud account, in things like the Find My iPhone app, the Cloud is seeking two phones labeled with my name and none with her's.  So we definitely don't want this as the set-up and communications network between our devices.
We want to set up our users on the iMac to sync to our SEPARATE AND DIFFERENT iCloud accounts and then have those iCloud accounts sync calendars and contacts (ONLY) between themselves, and then push that data to our separate iPhones (or the other way, from either of our iPhones to the individual accounts on our iMac and the other person's iPhone).  Does this description make sense to you?  I've diagramed it nicely using Keynote, but even thiough I can draw it, I can't figure out how to set up and configure all the devices to make it work.  If you would like me to send the Keynote slides (just two of them - the current and desired configurations - please send your email address to me at [email protected] and I'll be happy to forward it to you.
If anyone can help me set this up I'd be most appreciative!  Thanks so much.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all readers in this community!

    BobT.
I had the same problem, and decided to look into it last night.
First of all, the solution I would like to have is for Apple to allow for selection of iCloud accounts per application, i.e. Contacts to one, Photo Stream to another. I believe this would be the most straight forward solution for the problem we are facing.
Since this is not an option I came up with a workaround. I was most interested in solving this for Contacts, so this is what I tested for. Now I have all 3 devices with the same contacts.
    1) Turn off iCloud for Contacts on all devices. On the device that has the Contacts list that you would like to propagate to all others select to keep the contacts, and on the others select not to keep them.
Note that the current backups still exist on iCloud, so in case something goes wrong you can still turn the iCloud for Contacts back on to get your current Contacts back.
    2) In iTunes, sync All Contacts with the phones, starting with the one with the Contacts content you chose to keep.
From this point on, the 3 devices should sync contacts with each other.
This, of course, will stop your iCloud backups of Contacts, but I don't think this is really needed. You are already storing copies of your Conacts on 3 devices, which for good parts of the day are likely not all co-located. You also potentially have Time Machine backups turned on, which would mean there is a 4th copy there as well. For the case of Contacts iCloud only complicates matter ... that is until Apple implements the solution I first wrote about.

Is it possible to download iOS  5 from one iMac on two ipads and not get them totally wiped of apps and stuff. We have an iPad each and a communal email address and an iCloud address each. One iPad now is totally screwed up.

    Thank you for your reply.
I am somewhat new to iOS and OS having grown up with DOS and Windows. I am not familiar with IMAP and iCloud and I am not even sure which types of servers my various emails use.
The problem I would anticipate with iCloud is that (I assume) it would limit my access to data (including mail) on the iCloud to when I happen to be logged onto the internet. I also assume(?) that large files (photos etc.) would require some time to download whenever I wish to access them from whichever device I happen to be using (I hope I am wrong about this).
I have kept my devices to 500gb - 1TB for OS and 32gb - 128gb for iOS but since I have pretty slow WiFi (shared with DirecTV Whole Home and Netflix streaming) it is my impression that iCloud might be quite limited due to data transfer times.
Perhaps a factor would be that I have 2 DSL lines and my main DSL line is connected to two wireless routers (to also provide WiFi in a metal building that blocks WiFi and Cellular signals)
I may be totally wrong in my assumptions regarding iCloud. My mail is not so urgent that I need access to it instantly and I could wait until I had internet access or I can get it on my iPhone. My main concern with iCloud would be my data files (Word, Pages, Excel, Numbers etc.).
On the other hand, if I wanted to keep my 10,000 emails that would take up a lot of iCloud memory and I don't know how to measure how much storage it would take or how to move Hotmail or even iCloud mail to iCloud.
It may take me some time to figure this out.

  • I have two iMac's one running 10.6.8 and the other 10.8.2  What Apeture program should I purchase?

I have two iMac's one running 10.6.8 and the other 10.8.2  What Apeture program should I purchase?

You can currently only buy the current version Aperture 3.4.3 at the AppStore, and that version requires MacOS X 10.7.5. at least, see the release notes: Aperture 3.4.3
So you will not be able to install this version on your Snow leopard machine. Maybe you can buy a boxed retail version of an earlier release, compatible with Snow Leopard, but the newer version is faster and compatible with iCloud.
Do your iMacs both have the same processors and memory? You will wan to use your fastest mac with the best graphics card and the most RAM to run Aperture, also a large screen would be desirable.
