Two iPhones/iPods, two music collections

I dug up an old iPhone of mine and I want to fill it with music as a gift. It's for a restaurant owner who cooks me breakfast practically every morning and still fills up a CD carousel. I want to fill it with hundreds of classic rock songs I have on a storage drive. Occasionally, I'll take the iPod and put new music on it while I'm having breakfast.
The thing is, I don't want this iPod and its music mixing with my current music collection and my current iPhone. What's the best way to manage this separate device with a separate music collection?
One solution I thought of was to create a new user profile on my Macbook Pro, but this would seem to be a waste of precious hard drive space, all that extra space required for an OS X user profile.

  • I went over to iTunes Match and have lost about two thirds of my music collection. Can anyone help me get it back?

I recently decided to pay for iTunes Match to save memory space on my two iphones, where I have an extensive music collection, which was synced with an iPad and several MacBooks and a desktop. However I am really horrified that in so doing I seem to have lost two thirds of my music which has just disappeared, as well as my playlists.
I think I've lost at least 700 tracks.  I don't even know what I had. How can I get it back?
    Please help.

Where these tracks also stored in iTunes before you turned on iTunes Match? If not you're going to need to re-download them from your purchase history in the iTunes Store since iTunes Match only matches music in the iTunes library.

  • I have two iPads. With two functioning iPads. Is it possible (on the same ID) to sync two of them differently with the same account. So I want to use the new iPad for all my current functions. The old iPad for just my music collection?

I have two iPads. With two functioning iPads. Is it possible (on the same ID) to sync two of them differently with the same account. So I want to use the new iPad for all my current functions. The old iPad for just my music collection and remove all the other stuff?

Very easily. I have an iPod touch and iPad on the same account with totally different content.
If you use iTunes, connect each iPad to your computer and open iTunes and deselect any automatic updating/syncing. If you don't sync with iTunes but have them set up independently, under the settings, App Store, turn off automatic downloads for apps, etc.
I'm old fashioned, I set up and sync my iPad and iPod to my computer and iTunes. Each device has a different name  and I manage content manually and only allow sharing on what I want shared.

  • How do I transfer my entire music collection to a new computer and sync my iphone with new mac without deleting existing music in iphone?

    Hi All,
I will describe my current setup and the required setup below. Please help me with the steps to do this
    Current setup:
    OS: Windows 7
Total Music collection: 80GB of mp3 , which is NOT added to itunes library (I use foobar)
iTunes Music collection: around 500 songs, synced to my iphone (unchecked "manually manage" that meeans all these songs are in itunes library)
Now the required setup: (Since I am planning to get a macbook pro)
OS: Mac OS  (This means the music file path will be different)
Total Music collection: 80GB which is to be added to itunes library
iPhone Music: The same 500 songs as before.
Is this possible? In Mac OS I want my entire 80GB to be added to itunes library, also keeping my existing iphone songs intact.
    Any ideas?

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):

For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
2011 ilounge article: Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information (similar to the links above), particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick answer above. Unfortunately under the single term "transferring library" it describes two very different moves; relocating just your media (not  really transferring your library and not recommended unless you really need this configuration), and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.

Transferring the library as above will connect your i-device to the same library on the new computer even though it is stored on different hardware. You should not see the "erase & sync" prompt, and syncing will preserve game scores and other data on the device.
As for the 80GB of music in foobar, add that to the iTunes library at some stage by dragging those files to the Automatically Add To  iTunes folder.

  • IPhone's iPod content (music and videos) no longer visible!

I just upgraded my iTunes to 7.6 and now, after syncing my iPhone, all of the iPod-type data (music, video, podcasts, etc.) is now not visible on the iPhone. The "capacity" bar at the bottom of the iTunes screen show that all of the data (5.76GB) is still there, but now it is all the orange color for "other." My photos are still yellow in the bar and viewable on my iPhone, but I get a "No Music" and "No Videos" screen on the iPhone when I try to view that content. Apparently it is still there, but somehow the "file type" has been changed. My only two recent changes are updating to iTunes 7.6 and upgrading the iPhone software to the current 1.1.3. I've tried restarting the iPhone with the home/powerswitch method and have rebooted the computer several times as well. I was going to try and downgrade iTunes by installing 7.5, but another user noted that 7.5 will not read the updated 7.6 playlist. ANY IDEAS?? (all of this is on 10.4.11, not Leopard.)

    Hey Larry,
I went ahead and did a "restore" and everything was back to normal. It did take a while, though, as it wiped out then re-copied over 7Gigs of data to the phone. It was a hassle, but all is OK. I'm still concerned, though. I also spoke with a Genius at the Apple store who had never seen this, and thought it was a problem with the "file type" in iTunes, but i checked and movies were still "movie" filetype. He suggested MANUALLY checking/adjusting every file, but that is rediculous and there were hundreds of songs and videos!! Anywho, on my iPhone the date outside of the iPod items (music, videos, podcasts, etc.) was not effected, and all is back to normal after a lengthy "restore." Still looking for a "why" on this one...

  • Help.  My 120GB Ipod only stores 113GB and my music collection is 118GB.

    This is frustrating.
My music collection is 118GB but will not all for on my 120GB iPOD! he iPod only stores 113GB. Where is the other 7GB, album covers?
I find it impossible to cull some music! When I try I find myself wanting an album that has been culled!
Are there any ways to get my music collection onto my iPOD?

A 120Gb (decimal) iPod comes in at about 113Gb (binary) when your computer reports the space on it. Hard drive manufacturers nearly always use the SI meaning of Giga, 10 to the power of 9, whereas computer software tends to use 1024 (2 to the power of 10) for Kb, 1024 x 1024 for Mb etc. The larger the drive the more obvious the discrepancy between the two representations of the same munber.
    113Gb (binary) = 113 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 121,332,826,112 ≈ 120Gb (decimal)
Your collection will grow... Sooner or later it will be bigger than your device & you will have have to decide what to leave out. In the meantime you might find the *Convert higher bitrate songs to 128k AAC* feature helps out a bit.

  • When your in Nike plus for listening to music whuffle music can you shuffle a particular playlist or does it shuffle your entire music collection on your iPod? Williams

When in Nike plus mode to work out and listen to musi,  can you shuffle a particular playlist or does it shuffle your entire music collection on your iPod? All my other iPods do this and don't want to buy a new one if the 7th generation does the same?

To be more specific - create a playlist that has only your Christmas music on it, then create a Smart playlist that has everything you want from your playlist plus one more rule, where the playist is not your Christmas playlist. Play randomly from your new smart playlist and you will be good to go.
I have a playlist with some Christian music that I don't want to have on my normal playlist - at first, I tried to have two playlists (one with the Christian stuff and one with everything else), but this ended up being easier.

  • HT5622 i cannot transfer my music collection to my iPhone 5s.

    HI Apple Communties,
I am having problem of trasferring my music collection to my iPhone 5S.  It says i need to  subscribe to this Itunes Match and i am going to pay $28.  is this Hong kong dollars or US dollar? And do i need to pay every month of $28 of this amount is for a year? Thnak yo so much!

Unless I'm mistaking what you're seeing, "transfer purchases" means that it's offering to transfer your purchased tracks from the iPod back to iTunes. If you have iTunes set to synchronize with your iPod automatically (the default), then all your tracks will be copied to the iPod without iTunes asking for any sort of confirmation.
So to basics; did you copy your iTunes library from your former computer to your new one by some method and if so how? Or are you trying to transfer all your tracks from your iPod into iTunes on your new computer?

  • My husband and I have separate iTunes accounts and multiple devices (iPads, iPhones, iPods etc) how do we share our music and apps between our devices if we have different iTunes accounts.

Help! My husband and I have multiple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod ) that we we have linked to individual iTunes accounts ie he has his account with iPad, iPhone, PC and iPod linked/sync and I have my account with iPhone, iPad, iPad mini, PC etc.. How do we share our music and apps across/between our accounts?

It probably means that only one of you can use iCloud or at least sync calender/contacts with it. I would guess that you could manually manage the other phone as you have before.

  • Challenging:How can I COMBINE two CWIMAQPoints Collection in one - URGENT

I have two CWIMAQPoints collections and I want to combine them in one CWIMAQPoints in order to pass it as an argument to another function.
In order to do this I would like to avoid using a loop in where I would add each item one-by-one.
    I would appreciate any help.

There is definetly not an easy way to go about doing this in one step. This would require accessing with memory directly and using the windows API. Here is a good link to using pointers and memory allocation in VB. This should help you get started in the right direction. http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/how_to_do_pointers_in_visual_basic.asp
Also if you would like to do it point by point, you can use this function.
Private Function Concatenate(pointsA As CWIMAQPoints, pointsB As CWIMAQPoints)
    Dim counter As Integer
    Dim counter2 As Integer
    counter2 = pointsA.Count + 1
    pointsA.Add pointsB.Count
    For counter = 1 To pointsB.Count
    pointsB(counter).CopyTo pointsA(counter2)
    counter2 = counter2 + 1
    Next counter

  • Automatic Deployment Rule - One ADR for Two Different Collection for Two Different time Intervals

I have a scenario where two collection of Windows 8.1 is made based on geographical location. One collection is for all the windows 8.1 machines in India and one collection is for all windows 8.1 machines in US. Now I have created one ADR to be deployed
to the Collection for Machines in India with a schedule.
My requirement is that can i use the same ADR for those two collection with different schedule. Say I want ADR to be deployed in India at say 10:PM IST and for US collection at say 10:00 PM PST.
Can I use one ADR with two different schedule and can be deployed to two different collection. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Couple of "bits" to help you one your patch automation quest:
A ADR is very much a 1:1:1 rule.  It creates (or updates) ONE update group, deploys it to ONE collection, and you can provide ONE schedule.  While you are more than capable of flipping said deployment time to use local time instead of UTC, in general
it's a very simple set of rules that are dogmatically run.
That said because of the "include" feature of collections it's not that hard to setup a good/robust patching pattern.  What I recommend doing is building an ADR for each variance of deployment of patches or enforcement time.  for example,
my ADRs look something like this:
Software Updates - Zero day enforced
Software Updates - Critical and Security 1 month enforced
Software Updates - Critical and Security 1 month no reboots
Exact terminology is up to you of course, but I find a good descriptive ADR name saves a lot of confusion.  For each ADR I create an identical collection.  From there I can use existing collections and a simple "include collection" rule
to bundle things up and make them part of the patching schedule of my choice.  Anyone can now go into my "software update" folder, look at my collections, and know exactly what gets patched by what deadline.
Finally, don't be afraid to look into maintenance windows to trim down ADR count.  Making a deployment available for a month before it goes enforced, then setting up groups of maintenance windows (one for each Friday of the week for example) can also
accomplish a similar goal by having machines auto-patch during their week but you only using one ADR.
So by having two "types" of collections to manage your patching (one to assign a ADR built by deployment deadlines, the other for exact update windows) you should be able to group most your workstations into a decent patch scheudle without being
too excessive about creating a billion ADRs.

  • HT204074 I have our music collection on iTunes Match for my PC, ipad and iphone.  Can I share that music collection with my wife so she can play that with her iphone?  Even though she has a different Apple ID from me?

I have our music collection on iTunes Match for my PC, ipad and iphone.
Can I share that music collection with my wife so she can play that with her iphone?  Even though she has a different Apple ID from me?

Her iPhone will need to be set up to iTunes Match using your Apple ID to be able to share music via iTunes Match. Otherwise you'll have to download the music to your computer and then copy those tracks into her iTunes library, assuming hers is separate.
    Regards.

  • Is there a way to transfer my iphone/ipod music to my itunes music library?

my 1st generation iphone was synced with my laptop. then my hard drive crashed. so now i have a new hard drive. in order to sync my iphone with this one, it says it will erase all my music. what can i do? i heard about the software senuti, but i cannot get it to work, and i am worried that if it unlocks my iphone, it may render it useless, or something worse. what can i do? can anybody help? apple tells me i cannot transfer the songs from my iphone/ipod into my itunes music library because some of them were not purchased from itunes. i understand business. it's about money and copyright rights, etc...yada, yada, yada. i just hate to lose my songs (625 of them). i have no backup for the songs. i learned a lesson. BACKUP your stuff!
    <Edited by Moderator>

iTunes includes an option to transfer content that was purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for content that was purchased from the iTunes Store ONLY.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
Any content not purchased from the iTunes Store will be lost, which is why maintaining a backup of your iTunes library along with all other important data stored on an external drive used for backup purposes only is so important. The iPhone is not designed nor intended to be a backup device.
If your iTunes content that was not purchased from the iTunes Store was imported into your iTunes library from music CDs, dust them off and start importing them back into your iTunes library.
Using a 3rd party utility or application that provides for this but is not supported by Apple is your only other option.

    Yes.
You can authorize up to 5 computers to play itunes music ( pre-itunes plus).  There is no limit on itunes plus ( all itunes music for the past several years) and imported music.
You can sync as many ipods/ipads/iphones as you like to each of your computers.
