Two ipod's - How to merge contents of both?

I just purchased a second ipod and need help merging songs from my original mini ipod to the new ipod...I tried dragging the songs from the original ipod into the itunes library without sucees. Please help. Thanks.

You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

I have two children each with an ipod which has FaceTime - I have the iphone 4s with FaceTime.  All of these devices are connected to itunes through the one account.  How do I set up the FaceTime on the two ipods so as it doesn't ring both of them?

I started to do that then it said that this will become their apple I.D or similar and then I thought that will disconnect them from the same iTunes?  I want them still on my iTunes as they are only young (8 and 10)?  Or have I got this all wrong and even if I do set them up with a different e-mail will they still be on my itunes?  For example if they want to purchase an App will it still go through my account even if they use their ipod?

  • I have two ipods, is it possible to update them both using itunes?

Hi I have two ipods, the video one and one bought about two years ago, is it possible to keep them both updated with identicle music

Chances are yes you can keep them both updated with the same music. As long as both are on the same format (Mac or PC) and the music in the library is the same, you should be able to just update them. However if it tells you the iPod is used by a different library hit the option that allows you to ignore that message and you should be able to go from there.

  • Two IPod Family: How do we separate our accounts?

I have had my IPod Nano for a year now. My son just bought himself one yesterday and we loaded the program unto the computer. Two Itune Icons appeared and each of the two downloaded my songs which are not his taste. So I deleted my songs from the second newly generated Itunes Icon which is suppose to be his and when I went back to my old Itunes Icon I found all my songs had been deleted from my Itunes.
What's the deal? We're using the same computer, we each have our own IPods, we have different tastes. I don't want to listen his music and he does not want to listen to mine. I do not want to give up my music (I kept my songs in the library) and he wants to add his. This is not working out. My husband and our other son wanted to buy IPods too, but now that we have seen what has happened they are reconsidering their plans. We each have our own music preferences.
Now that my son and I are conjoined at the IPods, how can you separate us without damage to our IPods? Has anyone thought about a multiple IPod household with different tastes and a posibility that each may want to listen to their own choice of music. Is there any help for us?

Use the instructions in this article to transfer different songs to each iPod. The iTunes library is stored on a per-account basis by default; all copies of iTunes will have the same iTunes library when run from the same account.

  • Two ipods Down - How long should an ipod last?

I gave my daughter a 20gig ipod about two years ago. It crashed, apparently a hard drive problem. It was no longer under warranty when she told me about it. I think she was embarassed that somehow it was her fault it didn't work anymore so she didn't tell me for a few months.
I got myself a 30gig ipod with color screen in May. Now it has crashed. My screen displays a drawing of an ipod with a sad face on it. I tried the reset (menu/select button routine), I tried using different usb ports, I tried charging it for a while. But its dead.
We replaced our pc about 6 months ago, so I can't blane it on the pc, the old ipod connected to a different pc.
I'm 53 years old and treated the ipod gently. I mostly use it in my car since I have along drive to and from work.
Is it assumed that a new ipod can only physically last a year or less? I spent $800 and nothing to show for it.
Dell XPS400   Windows XP   I'm using Windows XP Media Center 2004

    Hi,
Firstly, I do not mean that you and your daughter treated your iPods badly. I have bought at least 10 different iPods for my family members or friends, only 1 mini iPod needed to sent it repairing. Few of them have the problems and managed to be solved, see details for the solutions.
iPod's hard drive may get damaged due to heat, humidity or altitude, and most cases caused by corrupted iPod software.
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    For old versions (window only)
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • Two iPhoto Accounts: How To Merge?

My wife and I both had separate Machines (Macs) and therefore have separate iPhoto accounts. We recently picked up a new iMac (and love it) but we'd like to merge our old iPhoto accounts into one shared account.
How does one go about doing this? If it's not natively supported, is there a 3rd part option?
    Thanks in advanced!

If you don't care about metadata and albums in one of the libraries you can use SyncPhotos to import the photos in library B that are not in library A.
    Here's how it works:
    1 - it compares the databases and/or album.xml files of Libraries A and B.
2 - the files in A that are not in B are imported into B by copying the original files from A into B's Import folder.
3 - it then does the same for B.
4 - metadata is not copied.
It can be used to just copy from A to B and not sync both ways if desired. It will work with 2 libraries that are different versions, i.e. between an iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09 library.
Depending on what's in the libraries it might do the job.  However if there are keywords, tittles, etc. that you need to preserve iPLM will be needed.

  • How to merge the contents of two Photo Booths?

Hello.  We have two Macbooks (Old + Existing).  Both are/were updated to Maverick.  However, I have restored the Old Macbook back to original (Snow Leopard) in order to sell.  I manually took off files as well as doing a Time Machine backup.
I would like to add all the photos and videos from Photo Booth on the Old Macbook into my Existing Macbook.
Is this possible either a. through a specific file in Time Machine (I do NOT wish to replace the Existing with the Old.  This is a merger.) or b. with the Photo Booth library I copied onto an external harddrive?  However, this is one 1.75gb file with the Photo Booth icon (a film strip) rather than separate photo files.  I am unsure how to access individual photographs or videos.  I was hesitant to open it up in case it negatively affected the Existing Photo Booth.
    Thanks for any assistance.

Great, I just lost 10 GB of data thanks to OSX folder merge... because appaerantly I should have known better not to keep a subfolder inside my folder I was trying to merge
I can not beleive more people don't have a problem with this. Merge contents in Lion does NOT merge contents if 1 or more of those supposed "contents" is a subfolder
Merge contents of two folders only works for files, it does NOT work for subfolders!!!!
Can we please get this acknowledged as a bug that needs fixing?
    EXAMPLE:
    Drive1 / Folder1
                   - text1.txt
                   - text2.txt
                   - / subfolder / text3.text
    MERGE TO
    Drive2 / Folder1
                   - text1.txt  (this gets updated / merged)
                   - text2.txt  (this gets updated / merged)
                   - / subfolder /
                             - text.txt
                             - text2.txt     (this should get text3.txt merged into it, from Drive1, but instead this subfolder is REPLACED, and NOT MERGED!!)
Why would i want to replace a folder if I'm trying to merge it!?
Almost 2013 and OSX still cant merge a folder? unbelievable

With the Nanos, you should have no problem lending them loaded with audiobooks from Librivox, etc.
As for the iPod Touches, I'm not sure the question is whether you should allow patrons to set up the device for personal accounts, but whether you can prevent them from doing so. Prepare to to a factory restore every time one is returned.

  • How to Merge the Contents of Two Folders in Lion, Keeping the Newer Versions of Duplicate Files.

Select and copy all the contents of the folder containing the newer files.  Paste the files ONTO the folder containing the older files.  The unique files will be copied into the older folder without further ado.  For the duplicates, a window will appear warning that a file with the same name already exists in the older folder.  Check the "Apply to All" box and click on the Replace button, not the Skip button.  These steps will merge all the files in the newer folder into the older folder, replacing the duplicates with the copies from the newer folder.
Unfortunately, the only information that the warning window provides about the duplicates is their common name, not sizes, dates, or times.  These steps worked for me because I knew for certain that all the newer files were in one folder.

  • How can I use two Ipods on one computer.

I was wondering if it is possible to use 2 Ipods on one computer without having to reload all of the music to the new library.

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually
If the iPods belong to different users then there are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above which is a little out of date:
Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Another option when using a single library is to set any or all of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • How do I use two Ipods with my Itunes?

I just bought an additional Ipod. How can I get songs just for this ipod? When I connect it, is it going to download my music to the new one? I want to have two separate files. Please help.

When you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update the whole library, selected playlists or you can manage it manually. With the first option it will update everything. With the second option only the tracks in the selected playlists (rather than the entire music library) are downloaded to iPod when you connect. With the manual update option, you manage what goes into your iPod by dragging and dropping selected songs or playlists into iPod:
    Loading songs onto iPod automatically
    Managing content manually on iPod

Hi, we have three iPhones and iPods which are currently linked to one apple ID.  I have now set up an apple id for each phone/iPod.  How do I go about re-directing the two accounts to the relevant one that has now been set up please?  I could do with a step by step guide to follow as am worried about loosing aps, music, photo's etc which are on the individual phones.
    Thanks
    Mandi

On each of the phones you're gonna use a new Apple ID for iCloud: turn off Contacts, Calendars, etc. for iCloud. You'll be prompted to keep the data or delete it from the phone, then turn off iMessage, FaceTime & delete the iCloud account...Settings>iCloud...scroll down...delete account. Then, setup iCloud using the new Apple ID, turn on iMessage & Facetime.
This will have no affect on the ID you share for iTunes content, & you can continue to do so.
