Two  iPods on one account?

Aloha All,
I'm buying a second iPod as my wife frequently borrows mine (she has no interest in using a computer) and I'm wondering if
iTunes will support both my existing iPod and the second one I'm buying. I see no sense in having two separate accounts
since my wife is perfectly happy with my music choices...
If it's pertainent, my current iPod is a 20-GB (4th generation) and the one I'm buying is a 30-GB (5th Generation).
Thanks, in advance for any comments...
Have a wonderful day!
Aloha, a hui hou...

Yes, iTunes can take multiple iPods; iTunes is designed to be compatible with multiple iPods registered on the same computer.
It's not such a good idea to connect multiple iPods simultaneously, though. Multiple iPods registered to the same iTunes account would be fine, but both at the same time isn't recomended; even though iTunes is capaible to some degree, iPod recognition problems in iTunes will probably occur sonner or later.
See this -> One iPod at a time
If your wife ever wants a different variety of music than yours, or vise versa, try out this Apple article about this -> How to use multiple iPods with one computer
I hope this helps,

  • Using two iPods on one account?

My iPod Mini was recently stolen and I doubt there's much chance of recovering it. So I decided I'm going to get a new iPod, but I'm not sure if it will work with my existing iTunes account. It seems to me that it might not work since it'd invite mass file sharing, but I could be wrong. Could someone help?

Are you sure about that? After buying new music on Itunes and updating my Ipod the Ipod refused to sync. I resynchronized all my music on the ipod which worked fine - with the exception of the new music. When I synchonize now, I receive the message: "Some objects of your itunes media collection were not copied to Fotis' Ipod because they may not be played on it" (rough translation from the German original). So obviously the ipods are linked to the accounts.

What version is your "existing iTunes"? The new 5G iPod with Video can only work with iTunes 6 or later. I suggest, if your don't have iTunes 6 upgrade to the latest... available Link: iTunes 6.5 Download.

I have an old iPod Nano that I'd like to put back into limited service.  Can I sync it and put just some of my music on it without messing up my current account?

Yes, sync settings for each device are independent of each other.

  • Can I have two ipods on one account temporarily

    Hello All,
My daughter has an old (extrememly worn out) ipod touch.  We are giving her a new ipod touch for Christmas. My question is this. I would like to give it to her all charged and ready to go with all of her apps, songs and everything set.  Can I do this while she still has her current ipod and not have her know about it.  She is savy enough to do it on her own, but I'd just like to have it all setup when she gets it!
    Thanks much!
    Pat

Yes, you can add as many ipods as you like. It doesn't even have to be temporary.
Just plug it in and sync it. iTunes will recognize it's a new device by its serial number.

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Have a look at the article linked below. Method one is to have two Windows accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so each iPod is updated with only certain playlists within one library. • Two ipods on one pc

I am new to this. How do I use two ipods on one PC? I would like to have separate libraries. Help!
      Windows XP

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually. There are links below to tutorials for all of these and for using multiple libraries.
If the iPods belong to different people, there are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and or user account or
    b) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page:
Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library:
    Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here:

  • How do I manage two iPods on one computer please?

I have an iPod (early 40G model, and it's fine). I installed iTunes, and all fine. A year goes by. Another member of the household gets an iPod (mini), and we load the software into a different subdirectory in Program Files. This erases my iTunes, but all still works fine for some reason. i.e. when I attach my iPod, it is recognised, and my iTunes music is shown on the screen. When the other iPod is attached, same thing (i.e. it is recognised and her iTunes are shown on the screen). Our different music folders are stored in different subdirectories.
This is all fine, until her iPod erases itself, and is now no longer recognised by iTunes. In the processes advised for solving this situation (restore and reset etc) we erase my iPod (but have managed to restore music to if after re-installing the original software that came with it.)
So now we are back to the stage of having her iPod not being recognised by iTunes. Please suggest solutions! Please also advise if there is a more sensible way of managing two iPods on one PC. Is it really as basic as having different playlists?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Yep. Playlists will do it.

How can I restore my comtacts from pc back up when I do have two phones with one account?the i cloud has contacts from one of the phones, and the pc back up from the other?

    Hi Silky-Milky!
If I understand your question correctly, you are attempting to merge your contacts from your previous phone's backup into your iCloud account, then go back to using your new phone as normal, with the new merged database of contacts. I have an article that can tell you how to do exactly that:
