Two ipods on one pc

I am new to this. How do I use two ipods on one PC? I would like to have separate libraries. Help!
  Windows XP

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually. There are links below to tutorials for all of these and for using multiple libraries.
If the iPods belong to different people, there are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
a) Sharing a single iTunes library and or user account or
b) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page:
Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library:
Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here:

  • How do I manage two iPods on one computer please?

I have an iPod (early 40G model, and it's fine). I installed iTunes, and all fine. A year goes by. Another member of the household gets an iPod (mini), and we load the software into a different subdirectory in Program Files. This erases my iTunes, but all still works fine for some reason. i.e. when I attach my iPod, it is recognised, and my iTunes music is shown on the screen. When the other iPod is attached, same thing (i.e. it is recognised and her iTunes are shown on the screen). Our different music folders are stored in different subdirectories.
This is all fine, until her iPod erases itself, and is now no longer recognised by iTunes. In the processes advised for solving this situation (restore and reset etc) we erase my iPod (but have managed to restore music to if after re-installing the original software that came with it.)
So now we are back to the stage of having her iPod not being recognised by iTunes. Please suggest solutions! Please also advise if there is a more sensible way of managing two iPods on one PC. Is it really as basic as having different playlists?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Yep. Playlists will do it.

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Have a look at the article linked below. Method one is to have two Windows accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so each iPod is updated with only certain playlists within one library. Set up the second exactly the same way as you set up the first. If iTunes is already installed, it doesn't need to be installed again.

The OP didn't ask how.  They only asked if it was possible, which would consist of either a yes or no answer, which is exactly what Niel provided.
If the OP wanted more information, they will respond asking for more information.

  • Can I use two ipods on one PC?

Hi, I have my own ipod, but would like to get another for my boyfriend but he doesn't have a PC, therefore everything would have to be done from mine, including different albums etc. I am sure I can do this but how does it work?

    Hello Soo,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes you can. And there are several different methods for how to handle syncing two iPods to one computer. For the information and steps on how to handle these methods, I would check out this Apple support document.

  • Can you have two iPods for one computer?

I know nothing about iPods so please excuse me for this question that probably has an obvious answer. My sister has an iPod nano that she has been using with our computer for a long time. I just bought an iPod and was trying to set it up. So can I use her i tunes to put music on my ipod or how does it work? I am aware you are not supposed to steal music though. So what am I supposed to do?

Yes, you can use 2 iPod with 1 computer quite easily.

How can I synchronize two iphones and two ipods on one MAC. My wife and i each have our own iPods and iPhones but share one MAC.

What do you mean by synchronize; music, apps, calendars, email, etc? Do you two share the same Apple ID on all devices? An Apple ID can support up to 5 computers and many iDevices.
    I hope this helps.

I was wondering if it is possible to use 2 Ipods on one computer without having to reload all of the music to the new library.

If the iPods belong to different users then there are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above which is a little out of date:
Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. You can read more about playlists at these links:

Another option when using a single library is to set any or all of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • Help wanted - step by step process on how to use two ipods on one computer

I'm just in the process of getting an ipod (waiting on delivery!) and want to know how it is possible to have two ipods using the same computer but synchronizing differently. I don't want to risk losing my partners music (he'll be very upset!) and I don't want to end up with his music on my ipod. I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a step by step guide or tell me where the best place to look for the answer is. Is it possible somehow to have two different libraries on one computer? Is that how it works?

Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. • Two  iPods on one account?

    Aloha All,
I'm buying a second iPod as my wife frequently borrows mine (she has no interest in using a computer) and I'm wondering if
iTunes will support both my existing iPod and the second one I'm buying. I see no sense in having two separate accounts
since my wife is perfectly happy with my music choices...
If it's pertainent, my current iPod is a 20-GB (4th generation) and the one I'm buying is a 30-GB (5th Generation).
Thanks, in advance for any comments...
    Have a wonderful day!
    Aloha, a hui hou...

Yes, iTunes can take multiple iPods; iTunes is designed to be compatible with multiple iPods registered on the same computer.
It's not such a good idea to connect multiple iPods simultaneously, though. Multiple iPods registered to the same iTunes account would be fine, but both at the same time isn't recomended; even though iTunes is capaible to some degree, iPod recognition problems in iTunes will probably occur sonner or later.
See this -> One iPod at a time
If your wife ever wants a different variety of music than yours, or vise versa, try out this Apple article about this -> How to use multiple iPods with one computer
    I hope this helps,
