Two issues about macbook display

i have 2 questions for everyone of you... just to know the situation
1) does your display have, in the bottom horizontal line, a stripe more white than the rest?
2) does your display have darker corners?
please add if your macbook is CD or C2D, and if you know the week of production, monitor code and monitor productor...
thanks for the answer!

I'm not sure if this is what you mean:
does your display have, in the bottom horizontal line, a stripe more white than the rest?
The bottom line on my display indeed seems to be SLIGHTLY more bright, but it is not obvious when not TRYING to see it... I don't know what you mean with "a stripe" within a "horizontal line"? Are you sure it's not part of the background image? Where's the stripe within the line?
does your display have darker corners?
No. It does have a small non-used area on all sides, but the brightness of the screen is the same all over the display.
Again: ensure it's not your background image. You may want to hold down Ctrl and then zoom the display using two fingers on the trackpad.
Arjan.

  • Two thirds of macbook display fading out

Recently the display of my Macbook Pro (2.2 GHz, Santa Rosa) has started fading out/going gray in the bottom two thirds when I open it from sleep. It also occasionally fades out after it's been open for a while. If I just give the screen a tap on the side, the problem disappears. Here is a picture of it (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/4kTLACtvR0YFfPAsF1Ztdg?feat=directlink).
Any ideas? I kind of feel like the screen is just going. Would Applecare cover a failing screen?
    Thanks for any insight!

No solution but I have the same issue on my early 17" Macbook Pro. The bottom half or 3/4 goes blank but everything else still works. I have found I get the screen back by squeezing the edge of the frame on the left at the level where the screen is blank below. I guess this is an intermittent contact to the screen in the side of the frame. The kids had worked out that closing and opening the lid would often get the screen back but I suspect that was just a way to induce some movement in the spot I am squeezing. I'd be keen to know of a site that shows how to get into this part of the screen and whether the likely issue is a fatigued wire or a connection to a board or something irrepairable.

  • Issues with External Displays on my Macbook Pro Retina

    Hello -
My apologies for starting a second thread back to back, but I thought I'd keep these two issues separate
I've been using two external displays off of my Macbook Pro Retina for some time - one off of the HDMI port and the other off of a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter.  Everything was absolutely perfect until the most recent update.  Immediately after that, whenever the macbook wakes up, the two external displays go into this black and white snowy mode (like the HBO logo, or that thing from poltergeist) and takes a minute or two to start working properly.  Any suggestions on how I can fix this?
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
Just browsed the forum and found a fix which solve the issue in my context: Google Chrome Play Music app was actually swallowing the media keys events, preventing iTunes to get them.
Still don't really understand why it impacts only iTunes in my case, however once the Play Music app uninstalled from Chrome via the Extensions pane of the Settings page, iTunes got its media keys events back.
    See this thread for reference:

  • Macbook Pro C2D 15,4" on order - Should I worry about the display?

I have ordered the new Macbook Pro C2D 15,4" and I read the numerous threads here about the display quality. I have just selled my CD Macbook Pro 15,4" so I want to ask you all here, is there a difference between the new and the previous model, or do you think that both are grainy?
I personally found the display of the Macbook Pro CD very good and I hope that the new is at least as good as that one.

My advice to you is check it out before you buy it. I've gone to 4 different apple stores or resellers and all the ones I've seen on display have unevenly back lit displays. You can tell the cd from the cd2 from the lighting. Its very obvious as you take a look at them side by side. You'll notice what i mean if you look at the very bottom corners of the display. There is more light coming through than the rest of the screen and this is very annoying. There also seems to be burn marks at the very corners, they are faint and gray but also noticable. In fact there seems to be a bar of light that looks like a reflection of the macbook pro, but is actually uneven lighting all the way across the bottom. Definately bad. I went through 3 17" macbook pros cd2 at the store and all 3 of them exhibited the same uneven lighting. So then i went with a 15" but that too had the same problems. I'm going to wait it out for another month or so. I love the macbook pros, but I want to spend my money on a good product.

  • External display issue when Macbook wakes up

    Hi there,
I have an external display (Samsung 920nw) used as an extension of my desktop. When I go to sleep so does my Macbook... I close the lid and the computer goes to sleep mode within seconds (the white led on the front right slowly flashes confirming that the computer got to sleep).
The problem starts in the morning when I wake up the Macbook. The white led is still and not flashing anymore and when I lift the lid only the external display works with a poor resolution. The macbook display remains off. To solve the problem I need to detect displays and rearrange everything again between the screens.
I am not sure but I believe that sometime during the night the Macbook wakes up and he thinks that I am using the external display as the only display.
I want to lift the lid and both displays to be working as they were before going to sleep mode. Is anyone facing the same problem and/or have any clue of what is happening?
I have a bluetooth mouse and a usb hub with printer, pen drive, external hard drive attached to the macbook.
    Thanks for helping.

Could be caused by a backup drive or some other application running in the background.  There's no way to be sure without looking at your crash logs.  I keep my computer on but I always close down my apps at night to protect them from power outages.

  • Macbook Display blinking and not recognizing ACER LCD projector

I have a Black Macbook (2008) and have been using an ACER p1265 projector for the last two year on a daily basis. Today when I went to plug in the projector to my mac my screen freaked out and began to blink blue and white. I tried another adapter, VGA cable and nothing has worked. I plugged my mac into another projector and it worked just fine. I know the ACER is really picky about what display setting it uses, I have tried all the options and nothing has worked. I am wondering if I should buy a DVI cable and try that out on monday when i am back at school? Any suggestions

I saw another post recently but now I can't find it. It sounded somewhat similar to yours. A projector that used to work suddenly wasn't. That problem turned out to be that the projector had gotten switched to auto scan mode and was looking for an input signal among it's various ports. For whatever reason, it was failing to detect the Mac's VGA output as a valid input. The person posting the issue said that when they hard switched the projector to its VGA input to stop the projector from port scanning, it started working again. Just thought I would mention that.

  • New MacBook Display is Horrible

I just got my new Aluminum MacBook last night, and it's going right back for refund this morning. The LCD is far inferior to my 1st generation MacBook display, and it's actually one of the worst displays I've seen on a modern notebook computer. I've been an Apple owner since I bought an SE/30, but Apple has screwed up badly here, and I find the new MacBook nearly unusable. (Please note, my current MacBook has a glossy screen; that level of glossiness is not the issue here.)
    The issues:
    1. The whole screen has an icky blue cast, and nothing in the display calibration settings will fix this. My old MacBook has a much more pure and natural looking white. I think Apple needs to work more on the LED back-lighting (or maybe they cheaped out on the MacBook LEDs).
    2. The blacks on the new display are washed out. This is obvious on the start-up animation (with the multi-lingual "welcome" animations against the Leopard nebulae in space). It's not just an issue with black images, however, this propagates to everything looking less crisp. And it's not an issue of adjusting brightness or screen angle. In fact, if you try to adjust the screen angle to get some reasonably good blacks, you get parts of the screen where you have a metallic or posterized effect. I saw this in the store displays as well, but I didn't realize that it would occur under normal viewing angles vs. extreme situations.
    3. Colors are not vibrant (nothing compared to my 1st generation MacBook). By not vibrant, I mean that different hues of blue, for example, are not distinct from one another. When I open Word, the splash screen has four different blue colors in the "feather" shape at the top right. On the old MacBook the blues are distinctly different and colorful, on the new MacBook they are much closer in hue and more dull. I think this is a result primarily of issues one and two above, but it may also have to do with other aspects of the inferior LCD on the Aluminum MacBook.
    4. The new MacBook screen should be called "mirrored" not "glossy". My 1st generation MacBook has a glossy screen. It's good. I rarely have an issue with visible reflections from it. The new MacBook is a constant battle. One major problem is that the screen needs to be pushed farther back to get reasonable contrast, but this angle directly reflects ceiling lights at the user. It's also so significantly more reflective than the previous glossy screen that it picks up windows and floor lamps and everything else a lot more easily. It's a mess.
I hope this helps other folks avoid my mistake in seeking to upgrade from an existing MacBook. The new one is not any faster in day to day use (3D rendering excepted), and it has crippling issues with the display.

    Hey Araboston,
Unfortunately, I personally don't see what you're talking about on my machine, however I want to help in any way I can. First off, it's possible you're seeing two different problems emerge. Using the mini-display port is a different technology than the mini-dvi port of yesteryear. I know from experience, when I hook up components to my hd tv using different connections (hdmi vs. component cable) I notice a difference. With the new technology you may have to re-calibrate your secondary monitor.
As for the laptop screen, I'd be interested to know what lighting conditions you're using your laptop mostly in. Mine worked great in all conditions, right out of the box. But, I'd like to also note that when I checked, the battery count showed a count of 7. In real world terms, that means that the battery was discharged and recharged 7 times. I'm wondering if they do some sort of in-house calibration, that was possibly missed on your machine. The best test would be to take your macbook into the apple store, set it next to a display macbook and see if yours looks any different.
    Best of luck.

  • Macbook display sometimes fails to turn on after shut down (2008 2.4Ghz dual core 2 duo - 2GB DDR2 running OSX 10.6.8)

I own a black macbook (early 2008 model) and for the past few months the display has occasionally (although recently more often) failed to turn on when booting. This only happens every one in four times after a full shut down. When I turn on the computer, I hear the hard drive boot and the fans start going, I also get a response in the white light indicator. When this occurs, I then have to press the on/off button to shut the macbook down, then press the button to turn it on again. Sometimes this works on the second try, but other times it takes 3 to 4 times turning it on or turning it off. Initially I thought it was a hard drive issue (and planned to purchase a new hard drive), but after connecting the laptop to an external screen, the desktop shows up (macbook display remains off despite unplugging or replugging external display). Is this a firmware issue? Or potentially a display cable issue? I'm leaning towards firmware since it only happens every 1 in 4 times. All parts in the macbook are original to 2008 and I've never really had any problems before.
I've tried resetting by taking out the battery/pressing the on button.
I also did a clean 7 pass wipe and reinstalled Mac OSX.
Used TechTool Deluxe - found no issues.
Booted computer and pressed D to perform a Mac hardware test - no problems found.
Not sure what to do now...

  • Issues using macbook with bootcamp and external apple monitor

I am having issues using an apple external monitor connected to my macbook with bootcamp - in particular, if i connect the monitor to the computer when the computer is already on, it won't work. Also, when i disconnect the monitor fromt he computer, the computer screen will go black and I'll have to re-start
Anybody experienced the same and can help?
    Thx

just make sure that while its standing on its side there aren't any plugs or cables on that side. I'm not familiar with the mb port setup, but having power, two usb, and a display cable could prose a problem for sideward standing if they are on separate sides of the machine.
as the first commenter mentioned the orientation of your computer is irrelevant, but you wouldn't want to have the weight of the laptop sitting ontop of a usb or video plug that's coming out the side.

  • Question about external displays.

Just curious about external display use with the macbook.
I want to link up using DVI to DVI but I recently read that my external display will only show the same as the macbook display, and that i cant use the macbook display, and the external display as two seperate screens? but i read its possible to do on the macbook pro. Is this correct?

I don't normally use my macbook with my primary display, but I have tried it out.
I hooked it up via vga, rather than dvi though.
It worked fine, but defaulted to mirrored. There is an option in the settings to disable mirroring, and use the macbook as the primary and the external as the secondary.
I haven't found any way to swap them, and have the macbook as the secondary display.
The management of the screens was pretty cool though. You can drag and drop the screens so their relative position is set up how you want it (over/under, left/right, etc).
    hope that this helps...

  • Two issues, Question mark and Chinese

Issue #1 - When I go to a URL such as the Apple.com location, OT files such as the iPhone (drool) currently featured don't appear. Instead I get a semi transparent QT logo with a Question mark superimposed over it. Same goes for QT files that are emailed to me as attachements.
Issue #2 - When I click on the QT icon on my dock I get a small window that pops up titled "Welcome to Quick Time" and if clicked linking me to a QT promo which, consistent with issue #1 will not load. Quick Time opens but other than the name of the application in bold, all other words are in what I assume is Chinese.
These two issues seem to have cropped up simultaneously, though I can't say for sure. How do I reset the language that QT is displayed in? Particularly when I can't read any menu/toolbar items in QT?
    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your assitance Jon, unfortunately I'm no closer to resolving this. The QT and VLC are both in the Applications folder, should this not be the case? Was not referring to applications here but the browser plug-ins in the "~root > Library > Internet Plug-Ins" folder. If there is a browser plug-in conflict, this is where you would start to look for it.
As for the language issue, I checked International and found Chinese to be second under English in the list. I moved Spanish up to second to see the result and QT is now in Spanish. I moved Spanish to first position and English to second and all of my Apps etc were in Spanish including QT! I put English back on top and all are just that except QT which is still in Spanish. So evidently QT has developed a distaste for English? This seems to confirm that your problem is connected to the language list -- or rather how QT has indexed and is accessing the list. It is obviously off by one index and if QT is the only application affected, would assume it most likely the application is corrupted. Unfortunately, as embedded as it is in the current system, the best solution might be to reinstall the OS. On the other hand, if you can wait for the next upgrade, I was wondering you could get temporary relief by simply placing "English US" at the top of the list and use "English" as the second entry. At least you could read the menus.
One other question....I was planning on upgrading to Quick Time Pro, will downloading this fix my problem? No, QT Pro merely unlocks editing/saving/exporting features.
Can I delete QT and then start over with a download of QT Pro?QT Pro is not a separate application. With previous versions of QT, I might recommend removal and re-installation of QT. But with the current "tight" integrations of QT/OS I personally would worry about creating more problems than I would solve.

  • Two issues with iPhoto '09

First of all, I'm running iPhoto 8.1.2, on a system running 10.6.8. The issue described below isn't something that occurred suddenly after an update, as far as I can remember.
There are two issues: first of all, iPhoto won't import my JPEGs that I processed with Lightroom. I did that so many times, and there was never an issue, but for some reason, now I get the message that the file is in an unreadable format. To find out whether the problem resides in iPhoto or in the files, I took a picture that I already had in my library, renamed and tried to import it again, to no avail. Also, I opened the new pictures in Preview, and there was no problem there.
Secondly, I can browse through my events, and see my thumbnails. However, when I then double-click on any picture, iPhoto just shows a black void -- even though it says '1 photo selected in 1 event'. This applies to all photos in the library.
I would really really appreciate feedback on this issue, as iPhoto is my main image displaying/sharing application.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it, but the problem persist in the other account. As I said before, I also tried to reinstall iPhoto, after using AppCleaner to uninstall first. Something else I could do is uninstall all iLife components, and then reinstall the whole suite. Is it enough just to clean up iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and Garage Band?
Another thing I (re-)tried is to use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library. To no avail, alas, but at least it provides a log with the error message, part of which I reproduce below. At the same time, iPhoto complains about the 'unreadable format' after every Event that ILM tries to rebuild.
    Here's the log message:

  • Cause for issuing replacement MacBook Pro

    Hi,
i bought my late 2013 model 13" MacBook Pro retina at the end of February 2014. A couple of months ago I started having serious issues with it (Not just slowness and freezing anymore). Particularly with overheating In sleep mode. The first time it was actually shut down and after plugging in the power cord it wouldn't turn on at all but got too hot to touch and took 4 hours for the battery to deplete and cool down again. After that I started having issues where the display would randomly switch off and on while I was using it. I took it to an authorised repair centre while I was in Thailand, they had it for two weeks and couldn't find a problem. They cleaned out what dust was inside and gave it back to me. the display issue seemed to have resolved but it worked slower and freezes more often since that service. The day before yesterday it overheated again in sleep mode.. I switched it off and let it cool and gave it 24hours before turning it on again. I used it to upload some videos off my gopro and decided to shut it down rather than sleeping it and today it won't turn on at all. I've exhausted all the troubleshooting options and it is basically now an expensive paperweight. I've booked an appointment at the Genius Bar for when I return next week. Is it likely that I can get a new computer from them under the warranty? because it seems like my machine is a lemon. are there options for Transferring my data to a new machine?

If you don't want to pay Apple try this
    http://fastmac.com/laptop.php
It has a plastic surface but the battery is stated to last longer than the Apple battery. I haven't tried it my self because i fell victim to the battery update program above. It looks like a winner.
