Two Issues: Connectivity through a PC and problems with Airport Extreme

Hello, I am fairly new to the Mac universe and not TOO knowledgeable about computers in general, so here I am asking you two questions that may appear simple or even lazy to some of you. Excuse me for that.
I just bought this Macbook yesterday, and the the wireless connection was working alright. Today, I can't get online trough browsers and other programs, even when Airport says it is perfectly connected, with no problems whatsoever. I've alredy checked, re-checked and reconfigured all there was to it and nothing happens anyway. I have noticed this problem is pretty frequent from up to Mac OS X version 10.5.2, and I see a lot of inquiries from other members but no universal resolution from either the community or Apple themselves.
If anyone can indicate me the way to a patch I haven't stumbled, or the most functioning solutions from other users I would be very thankful!
The other issue I have is that since I have this problem, I would like to know how can I connect to the internet using a PC laptop's wireless connectivity. Down where I live, I receive a free wireless connection to my PC, from which no password is required and no problems are perceived. What (software, hardware, cables) do I need, and how can I make it so I could freely browse the web with my Macbook using the PC's connectivity?
Thanks for all your time reading and helping me to break this problem. Connecting to the internet is fundamental for me at this moment, so I appreciate all your help. BYE.

Using the Mac with your iPad has nothing to do with the fact that the iPad is running slow. There could be any number of reasons why the iPad is now running slow.
Have you tried a reset on the iPad?
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa

  • Problem with Airport extreme and Time machine

I recently purchased a 320gig external hard drive for Time machine. I connected it to my Airport extreme but it is not being recognized for some unknown reason. If I directly connect it to my iMac it works perfectly. I've updated with the latest firmware and it should work via USB with Airport extreme. Any suggestions why it is not working?

I have used the following for about two years.
-MBP, Airport Extreme, External HD (1TB) for my time machine.
You probably know, that's "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
To get around this issue, I have switched off the Time Machine, and am only turning on once a week or so, to grab any changes or additions I've made. I've been doing this for about 6 months now with no problems.
Now whenever I do this, (It should only be backing up an album or two from iTunes,) it tries to back up my whole system again. EVERY TIME. It did not do this before.
If you go too long between backups, Time Machine will do a new, full backup. And once it decides to do that, it will keep trying until it succeeds. There are some other possibilities as well. See #D2 in the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If none of those seem to explain it, see #A1 there; download the TM Buddy widget, copy and post the messages here.
Why are you only backing-up once a week? Time Machine was designed to back up changes hourly, as long as your Mac is awake and the TC is in range. It will protect you best that way, and unless there's a problem, those backups will usually be very quick.
But if you're only going to back up once a week or so, then Time Machine is not the best app for you. See Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.

  • Hard drive compatibility problems with Airport Extreme

Yesterday I received and installed Airport Extreme to create a home network where I would have external hard drives connected to the network by USB. Airport Extreme wouldn’t recognize my 1TB Western Digital My Book hard drive and after some investigation I find out that Airport doesn’t recognize HD formatted in NTFS.
So my plan was to move the data off the WD HD on to a spare HDs I have, reformat the the WD HD to a Mac/Airport extreme friendly format and then move the data back on. It’s kind of a pain but not the end of the world. Then as I’m transferring the files between hard drives I get a message that the file is too large to move to the other HD. I read some forums and see that FAT32 partitioned drives can only take file sizes up to 4GBs (I didn’t check the drive format but assume this to be the case). The problem is that some of the video files on the WD (NTFS format) are in excess of that size so I can reformat the extra drive to NTFS to get the files off the WD HD, reformat the WD to be Mac friendly and reformat in FAT32 (or something else) but then I’ll be stuck with the same problem by having the files on the other HD that will be too large to move back to the reformatted WD HD. Any ideas on the best way I can move these files onto a MAC readable/writable format that will support file sizes in excess of 4 GBs and be recognized by Airport Extreme? Is there a way that I can cut the files down to get them under 4 GBs? Any help is much appreciated.

    Steve70 wrote:
I should be able to format the 2nd drive back to FAT32 so it can communicate to both the PC and Mac
you could do that, or you could install MacDrive on the winsloth side.
alternatively, you could format the 2nd drive in NTFS and install the _*NTFS 3G*_ driver, which will enable the Mac to write to it (Macs can read NTFS out-of-the-box).
no more 4 GB per file limit
however, i would prefer to have my drives formatted for Mac ...

  • Problems with AirPort Extreme and connecting to personal ftp

    Hi all
I seem to be having a problem with connecting to my personal server outside of my network. When I connect using a static IP within my network(192.168.1.x) I can connect fine using my Mac and PC so I've ruled out improper server settings. I've mapped a port (21) to the same static IP as my server, but I cannot connect. I am prompted with "An FTP Connection to "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection" I think I've toggled every option in the Airport Utility but nothing seems to work. Has anybody been successful in making this work?
    Thanks for any help offered

OK, thanks for the info, which really helps.
Your AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode, so the IP addresses that your devices need are being assigned by the Cradelpoint router, not the AirPort Extreme.
Either the Cradlepoint router is not allowing more than 3 devices to connect, or it is your service provider that is limiting the number of devices that can connect....probably because of very limited bandwidth.
I'm not sure whether you want to try to contact support at Cradlepoint or your service provider to try to find out who is actually responsible for the maximum number of connections allowed, since they will likely each blame the other for the problem.
The workaround...if you want to try it, since it bends networking rules a bit....is to configure the AirPort Extreme as a router, not a bridge.
The upside to this is that all of your devices will be able to connect and get a valid IP address.
One downside is that this will introduce what is known as a Double NAT error on the network, but that is rarely serious on a home network, and Apple does provide you with the option to "ignore" the error, so you get a nice green light on the AirPorts.
Another downside may be....depending on the bandwidth that your service provides....that your connection is really slow....as in dial up speed slow....when you have a number of devices all connected to the network simultaneously, since they will all share the available bandwidth is provided.
I never had any problems in the past with wireless connections when I configured the AirPort as the router. But I also was very careful to avoid downloading large files using the Cradlepoint connection since the bandwidth was quite limited.
Not sure how you want to proceed.
We can tell you how to configure the AirPort as the router in this type of setup if you will let us know what operating system you used to configure the AirPorts, but we cannot guarantee that things will work for you if you try it.

  • Problems with airport extreme and windows vista

Hi, I have windows vista and I'm having problems conecting it to air port extreme. The only way I can make airport extreme work is to disconect and reconect the powercord and then my computer reconizes it.
    Any sugestions would be helpful.

I just got off the HP "chat" technical assistance about my HP DV6500z doing this same thing. At least for my model there is an October BIOS update. She had me re-install the Broadcom drivers and run the BIOS update. Now the whole computer runs faster in addition to connecting wirelessly! Not only that, I can use the "closed" network feature through the Airport Utility to hide my network as I did in the past and the PC finds it! I guess through all of the very testy notes on HP's discussion board they finally came through (well, at least on this model). My model has the AMD processor so if yours is Intel it may not be the same. I recommend going to their TA chat line or type in your model on their Software & Driver page to see if there is a recent revision on your models BIOS. The one I downloaded was dated 10-2007.

  • Problems with Airport Extreme and OS 7.6.4

Last week, we updated three devices (Time Capsule, Airport Express and Airport Extreme) to OS 7.6.4. Time Capsule and Airport Express seems to work well but the Airport Extreme didnt! Users of the AiEx told me about bad ping statistisc after wlan login. The connectivity changes in a curious way. one second, 0 % loss and one second after the connectivity changes to more than 50% loss, even the users are sitting in te same room, the AiEx does ???
We used a 2 GHz and also an 5 GHz Wlan-Network. Additional to the problem of connectivity, somtime the 5GHz-Network ist for seconds not visible!!
Now  i restored the old 7.6.3 and it works well like before. One additional triel results in the same problem, even i resettet the station two times.
What to do? for the next time, our Airport Extreme got the old OS 7.6.3.

    A.

If memnongr's advice doesn't work, you can revert to an old version of the firmware by using AirPort Utility 5.6.
    http://macintoshdesktop.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/airport-utility-56-and-mountain-l ion.html
Go to Base Station>Upload Firmware on the menu bar, and it will allow you to revert to an earlier version.

  • Anyone having problems with airport extreme and a BT homehub?

i have a BT homehub broadcasting wirelessly connected into a airport extreme unit.
the wireless connection keeps on dropping off, i run diagnostics and sometimes i have to re-enter the network password and other times it reports airport is working fine.
i am sure the problem is with the homehub. i wonder if i turned the homehub's wireless of the connection might be better!
    any thoughts?
    many thanks

Yes, that might help reduce the likelihood that these two wireless routers are interfering with each other's wireless network, resulting in the symptoms you have described.
The other thing you could do is configure the AEBSn for "n only" wireless transmission. You could then use the HomeHub for slower b/g connections, and the AEBSn for faster n-only connections.

  • Problems with iChat audio and video with Airport extreme

I am trying to use iChat video and audio between a Macbook Pro and macbook running 10.5.4 through airport extreme. When we attempt to do this it constantly says the other person has declined or hangs. I have also tried to contact people overseas and am getting same problems. I am connected to ADSL 2wire gateway modem directly to Airport extreme. Please can anyone help - like Ralph

  • Setup problems with airport extreme and cable.

I am trying to install a new airportextreme 802.11n with cable (comcast) using a Motorola SURFboard eXtreme. The airport extreme keeps blinking amber. Any suggestions?

Should I connect the modem to the AEBS before I power it up?
Yes, all devices that normally are interconnected by Ethernet, should be connected during the power recycle.
If it continues to flash amber, should I still go through the set up with Airport Utility? If so, manual or let it guide me?
Yes. The following Apple Support article describes the flashing amber status light in more detail.
By default, your AEBS will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. You would then use the AirPort Utility to make any required configuration changes. The Utility has two basic modes: 1) Assist-me (aka Automatic) and 2) Manual Setup. The latter is used to fine-tune any settings. The assisted mode, should take you through the steps to get the AEBS up and running properly for most common configurations.
Please feel free to post back if you have any questions on setting your AEBS up.

  • Big problem with Airport Extreme and Vivax Provider in Brazil

    Hello guys.
I live in Brazil and I bought my Airport Extreme in a recent trip to USA.
For some years I was a client of Telefonica and had an ADSL link, I had a D'Link G604T to do both the modem and router operation in the same box. I was happy with my connection of 1Mbps.
In a recent promotion of Vivax I switched to a cable connection to have both TV and Internet at the same operator, my link now has 3Mbps.
With this pack I also received free one RCA cable modem model DCM425B, it was installed fine in one computer only. Everything was fine my connection was faster the old one.
So I went to install the Airport Extreme to make things even better.
After I installed I went to see the web status of my modem, all parts were looking fine, but the modem could not see the computer. Bad sign.
I talked to Vivax support people and apparently it was a problem with their network setup and they manage to make it right. My model now sees my computer.
After that problem was solved I could not make AE to work with the modem, it had the green light and the setup looked fine, but I could not open any site. I tried to turn off my modem and AE, waited some minutes and turned on first my modem and after it was up I turned on AE. All lights looked fine but again no connection to any site.
I called again the Vivax support center and they tried to help me but the don't know AE and they could not help me with all the details but said there was 2 10.x.x.x coming from my side. So I tried to use in bridge mode. I also selected the 192.x.x.x range instead of 10.x.x.x as default.
After many setups and turn off and on again my connection is working but I have a big problem with wireless. If I turn it on I loose my connection, it seems that AE sends 2 equal ethernet address to Vivax and their network don't like it cutting me off.
So my connection setup is like this:
RCA Cable modem model DCM425B at 3Mbps using a 200.x.x.x ip
Airport Extreme connected to a Mac and a Windows PC by wire using the 192.x.x.x range ip
    Wireless is off
    Bridge mode is on
This the only way I could make it work.

After a firmware update it worked fine.

  • Problems with Airport Extreme Firmware 7.6.1. and Time Machine Backups to USB Disks

I found that when I upgraded to Firmware 7.6.1 my Airport Extreme was no longer able to maintain afp server connections to USB disks mounted to the APE. If I power cycled the APE it would work for a while and then fail again. This even applied for connectins on gigabit ethernet, not just wifi. Consequently my Time Machine backups became unusable. Rolling back to 7.6 fixed it, but I permanently fixed this by changing the IPv6 mode from "Automatic" to "Host". No problems since then.

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

  • Intermittent re-connect problem with airport extreme 802.11n

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with my 802.11n airport extreme. When my MacBook goes to sleep, it does not reconnect the my WPA2 personal wireless network. This problem happens about 80% of the time.
I have updated the Airport Extreme firmware to 7.1. I have installed the recent AirPortExtremeUpdate2007002. I am running 10.4.9 and everything is updated according to software update.
Apr 18 22:13:24 computername /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport: Error: WirelessAssociate2() = 88001007 for network spiderweb. An unexpected error occured.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yes, i am having a problem similar to this. Although my macbook does not go to sleep overnight, i always wake up to see it either 1) not connected to the wireless lan anymore or 2) having a self-assigned IP that doesn't work for the internet.
The only solution to get things working again is to unplug both the modem and the router and then plug the modem back in and then plug the router back in. Very annoying.
But yes, that is the message i get from Console.

  • Connection speed problem with airport extreme

Hi, I´m using airport extreme and two airport express elements for best possible WLAN. It worked for a while, but from one day to another the connection speed from my apple device I wanted to connect became unrealisticcally slow. I have a 100 mb connection and the device, which are very close to the airports get below1 mb connection which make my work nearly impossible.
What is your idea, can you please help me ?
    regards, jky

    Hi-
    On the slow machine...
Go into SystemPreferences>Network...look in on the settings.
If there are IP addresses listed under "DNS Server", remove them.
    Apply, Save...
    Test again.
    Things better? Good.
    No better?
Put the IP address of your ExtremeAirport (usually 10.1.0.1, but check it).
If in doubt? Restart (power cycle) all your network devices, including the computers.
