Two Kernel Panics, Spotlight dead, Firewire sketchy,
Today after I restarted the machine from the Quicktime 7.4 update I got the gray screen of death and restarted - got it again and restarted. Then Leopard dumped my two Firewire drives. I shut down and unplugged them adn then replugged after 5 minutes and they were there.
Then Spoylight wanted to rescan everything and it did. I left the machine alone for awhile and it finished. I tried to do a search in spotlight but got the beachball and the finder stopped responding - as did everything else.
I really think Leopard has some firewire issues. It seems like I have had problems every time I have to restart. It's always been a crap shoot as to what drives will mount or if the dock will show up or even the gray toolbar strip.
I am back on my Tiger install to test the drives.
Is it possible that Spotlights index file is corrupt an dcausing these problems? I hate to have to re-install, but if that's what I gotta do...
Hi J.P.,
Your panic log is definitely flagging the kernel extensions for the FireWire burner:"Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.driver.QPSQueFire(1.4.4)@0x328f2000"so that is clearly the problem. The version shown (1.4.4) is the most current version. Unless the kernel extension itself has become corrupted, something in the security update may have rendered that driver incompatible with Mac OS X.
This is something you want to take up with Que before proceeding further. If they've had similar reports, they might release a new kernel extension. Otherwise, you're faced with trying to reinstall that kernel extension from an identical copy of Tiger or performing an Archive and Install.
Good luck!

What is CIJScannerRegist? I've gotten two Kernel panics in the past 2 hrs
My Mac Pro has been stable for over 2 years now. I've just gotten two kernel panics in the last 2 hours, both related to a process called CIJScannerRegist. Who owns this process and what does it do? I did a ps aux on it and at least found where it is located:
$ ps aux | grep CIJScannerRegist

I still don't know what it does. Any help would be appreciated.

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: CIJScannerRegist
Message was edited by: rimcrazyOk.. I have one question answered but it brings up another. For anyone else that is having this issue, CIJScannerRegist is some daemon that is getting kicked off on boot. At the moment I don't know WHY it is getting started but I have found this. The application is located at: /Library/Image Capture/Support/LegacyDeviceDiscoveryHelpers/CIJScannerRegister . This is an app related to Canon All-In-One printers. I have a Canon Pixima MP800R Scanner/Printer. For some strange reason that escapes me all of the sudden this is causing Kernel Panics. I have a New MBP and an older Mac Pro. Both have SL 10.6.2 installed. Both have the Canon Driver installed. I found that both had an earlier version so I downloaded the latest driver from the Canon website. The one you want is the 45.3Mb file named mp800rosxns10ea7-3.dmg. This has the printer/scanner/network all rolled into one.
What is very curious is on boot my laptop (which does not kernel panic) boots but the process CIJScannerRegist does NOT start. On my desktop however I get the following two additional processes that are running:
$ ps aux | grep Image
phoppes 702 0.1 0.0 2435032 532 s000 R+ 8:46PM 0:00.01 grep Image

phoppes 717 0.0 0.0 2435032 484 s000 R+ 8:50PM 0:00.00 grep Image
You can see process 257 and 254 were started on boot. If I kill both process, I don't get a kernel panic. What I would like to know is what in blue blazes is starting the processes? If I go under System Pref's on BOTH machines, under Login Items there is the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility but only on my Mac Pro am I getting these additional two processes. I did a ps aux | grep Scan and I see the network Scan utility. That is a different process. Something is starting this CIJScannerRegist process. What I would like to do is simply fix that this process is getting started but I'm not sure where in the boot process that this is getting kicked in.
So for anyone else with this issue, the hack fix is do a ps aux | grep Image in a terminal window. Get the process ID of CIJScannerRegist and then do a kill -9 ID# where ID# is the process id you got from the first command. That will stop the kernel panics but still doesn't explain why they are getting started.
I will stop this thread and make a new post on the process as that is really a different question. -
Kernel Panic when plugging Firewire devices
I have a Kernal Panic each time I plug something in the Firewire ports. I already have tried many things to solve this issue, in vain (see here, in french : http://www.xrings.net/xrings/forum/viewtopic.php?t=216 )
If somebody has any suggestion... Thanks !Thank you jeffdc, but I have done it.
In fact, I've done all the things I could think about : they are listed in the link referring to an other forum (in french) in the first topic of this discussion :
http://www.xrings.net/xrings/forum/viewtopic.php?t=216.
I translate it here in english :
MY MAC. Power PC G4 800 MHz 256 Mo. System : OS X 10.4.2.
ISSUE. Kernel Panic each time I try to connect any kind of device (HD, iPod) to any of my Firewire ports.
CABLES AND DEVICES. I changed external Firewire cables and devices to be sure that the problem was not coming from them. The kernel panic appears systematicaly after connecting to the Firewire ports, when the computer is switched on as switched off with a reset...
FIREWIRE PORTS. I followed the instructions from the Apple Support Site : disconnect evreything (USB and all ports), switch off and disconnect the computer from the electricity alimentation cable, wait a few minutes, reconnect, switch on. Nothing changed.
HARDWARE TEST. I reboot on the Apple Hardware Test CD. Results were OK. I've done it twice : first time with iPod connected on the firewire, second time with nothing connected on the firewire port. First time the result was OK : firewire was indicated as "present". Second time it was OK too : it was indicated as "absent". So the computer is able to detect the Firewire device... (PS. I don't have any trouble with the iPod, nor with the software nor with the hardware, when the connection is with USB, so the iPod and its software are OK.)
AUTORISATIONS. I have of course repaired the autorisations with Disk Utility. Nothing changed.
NVRAM. I have done a reboot in Open Firmware (pommealt+of) to reset the Non Volatil RAM (reset-nvram, reset-all). For no result.
CORRUPTED, HIDDEN FILES. I've tried to do a big cleaning with Applejack utility (corrupted files etc.) in Open Firmware again. Again in vain.
NEW SYSTEM ON A PARTITION. My HD is divided en three partitions, so I've done a reboot on the Installation CD from my old 10.2 System on a partition containing only documents. I made a reset on that System, done a few upgradings (System, iTunes and iPod), and now that partition is 10.2.8.
NEW FIREWIRE TEST ON THE REINSTALLED SYSTEM. Under that freshly reinstalled System 10.2.8, I tried again to connect the iPod on the FireWire port : Kernel Panic again.
QUESTION. So, what does happen ? Is it a software or a hardware issue ? Or an original bug in the 10.2 system ? What can I do ?
Thank you again to all the people who have already read my post and took time to give me an answer, and to all the people who will do it. -
Kernel Panic with LaCie Firewire Speakers and SL 64 bit
Hi all,
I experienced kernel panics during boot in 64 bit and realized that the Apple FW driver causes a kernel panic during boot.
I isolated the problem to be my FW LaCie Speakers (attached through my cinema display 23"). I thought I have a conflict with something else, so I tried to make a clean installation but still, SL crashes when in 64 bit. No problem at all in 32 bit mode.
I'm really surprised as the kernel panic log shows the problem inside the Apple Audio FW driver...
Any ideas?
Thanks
GiuseppeI just tried to connect the speakers directly to the computer and the problem is gone... really surprised that the hub in the cinema display is causing this problem.

Then restart your Mac. Hopefully no more kernel panics.
According to the Sophos system requirements, you should be able to run Sophos on Lion v10.7
If you want to have anti virus software installed, you can download ClamXav from the App Store. Might have better luck. -
Many kernel panics, possible dead logic board?
I hope someone can help my diagnose my recently quirky iMac G4 1 ghz 17 in flat panel. I currently have a 250 G Seagate hard drive, 1 G memory. It's running Tiger 10.4.11...or attempting to run it.
This computer ran beautifully until several weeks ago when I foolishly attempted to upgrade to Leopard. Only about a third of Leopard got installed when the system froze and crashed. I managed to access the hard drive and did a complete wipe and install of good old Tiger, upgraded to 10.4.10 which ran without a glitch in the past.
However, even after this clean reinstall I continued to get freezes and kernel panics. I repaired all permissions carefully after each upgrade and I ran Disk Utility with no problems detected and no repairs needing to be done. I tried to run Disk Warrior to double check but continued to have system freezes and kernel panics while running Disk Warrior!! The panics were/are intermittent. The computer behaves fine until I've used it for a few hours, then crashes, usually while I am in Safari or iTunes, but occasionally I will get a panic at start up.
I have replaced the hard drive with a brand new one as it was still under warranty. I tested the memory and determined by process of elimination that the stick of RAM on the logic board was not functioning. I replaced that.
So, I have a new hard drive and functional memory and tried a Tiger fresh reinstall yet again today. The system continues to crash episodically...used the computer for a few hours this am before I got a kernel panic. This afternoon it resuscitated itself enough to let me put upgrade 10.4.5 on it and crashed in the middle of the upgrade! Bear in mind the machine's run all these upgrades and functioned fine in the past.
I think I obviously have a hardware problem and since I've recently replaced the hard drive and both memory modules as well as done a fresh reinstall of the OS version this iMac used to run perfectly, I'm thinking I have a logic board issue.
Any opinions or suggestions on how I might get these issues worked out would be very much appreciated! Thanks for responding. Yes, I've already followed all those suggestions to the letter. Unfortunately I do not have the original Apple Hardware Test disc that came with this computer. I have oredered a copy of Tech Tool Pro and plan to run it but it has yet to arrive.
I let the computer rest overnight and it booted right up and so far no freezes or panics, I've been using it about a half-hour.
Of note, in the kernel panic log folder it says,

Kernel panic: hardware or software related
I had two kernel panic incidents recently. I know that most kernel panics are related to hardware. I have not 3rd party ram and only my monitor, keyboard (apple) and mouse installed. That is, no additional usb or firewire devices. I understand that faulty ram is one possibility and that ram tests may not fully diagnose the problem. I tested my ram with rember and the techtools that I got with my applecare (runs out march 2009.) I was not able to boot into the techtools DVD so had to run it off of the harddrive after updating. I ran rember with the finder still active (there is the option to run rember without the finder running). The memory tests in rember and techtools passed which I understand may not tell me much. I have not yet run the memory test off of my install disks.
Before updating to 10.4.11 using the combo updater, I booted from my install disk and repaired the drive (it was ok) and repaired permissions (from the install disk). I did the same two tasks from the install disk after the updates, although I let a couple of days pass before doing these tasks. After reading in another forum that repairing permissions from the install disk (os 10.4.5) might have caused some problems, I just repaired permissions while running from my day-to-day account.
I have decent backups.
I thought I'd run my two kernel panics by you folk in this forum to see if anyone has any suggestions.
*kernel panic #1*
I got this kernel panic the other day on shutting down. That is I shut down using the shutdown command in the apple menu then got the kernel panick The only new thing that I had done (asides from finally updating to macosx 10.4.11 and the latest security patch) was that I had my idisk set to automatic, so the mirror agent was active. I have shut down a couple of times since with out kernel panic.

kernel panic #2
This actually happened twice put I only have one crash log. I think that the reason why I only had one crash log is because after the second kernel panic, I had to boot into safe mode to get rid of my icalalarm scheduler from my login items because of some conflict. Anyway, the scenario is that I am using firefox 3.0 (I have the latest version) and then open google earth. After I try to open google earth, I get kernel panic.

She read the report from my earlier conversation with Apple Care, I told her about the error message from AHT, and she then did a very thorough diagnostic using one of their utilities. Her theory was that if it was hardware related, that it might be the graphics card on the logic board or the memory. Seems that she was having a hard time finding the error code for my mini model in their database. <shrug> The memory test took about an hour and it passed. And I think it passed the other tests she did, but when she tried to reboot the machine, got a kernel panic which told her that it is the logic board (graphics card that is soldered on the logic board.
The Bridgewater NJ store is undergoing some renovations so they are, for the moment, not able to order parts and have lost much of their backroom. But she took down a detailed report with new apple care case number after making an appointment for me at another apple store (Menlo Park, I've been there before, they are good). She also told them to order a logic board. I work tomorrow, so I am going this Friday afternoon. -
Kernel Panic and Application Crashes when Accessing a Folder
Hi,
I originally posted in the iTunes forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=252516&tstart=75) with this problem as it was in iTunes where I first noted the issue. However since then I have discovered it is a system wide issue.
Everytime I try to access a specific folder, my iTunes Music folder, whichever application is accessing it will crash. Finder crashes when trying to view the folder, and other apps will crash when trying to open from or save to that folder. There will be no crash reporter when they crash either. I have also experienced two kernel panics, one when iTunes was playing, and another when Tech Tools Pro was doing its surface scan. The folder is on one of my two FW800 connected external hard drives. The kernel panic looks like this:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002478C8): hfs: block mark free: trying to free non-existent blocks (-1094886590 -1078469906 39039948)

I am not entirely sure as to what this means or how to deal with it. I am able to access the folder via terminal, but there are 2700 folders within my iTunes Music folder and 23137 songs, so it could take me a very long time to find the exact file or folder which is causing me problems. I could potentially have enough disk space should a backup be required but it would be backed up to 3 different drives and would be close. That is assuming of course that I would not experience the same panic when accessing the area. Can anyone help me with this?
Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.3)The first phase:
Since the Kernel Panic is temporarily a state of suspended animation because of a safe-boot solution, try the next step. This is a pre-caution to avoid any failures during ongoing troubleshooting.
After safe-boot, launch System Profiler and select /Software/Extensions/ directory in Contents (on the left column ) menu. Next, open /System/Library/Extensions/ folder by Go to Folder command or by manual. Compare the both contents. You'll see System Profiler shows less kernel extensions than /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. There are ".kext" files that are not shown in the loaded Extensions directory. If there is a most suspect third-party extension (perhaps FireWire's driver), try removing out of the folder to a temporary made folder on the desktop-- you may be prompted the admin or login password.
The second phase:
TechTool Pro fixed a file structure error in one file on the main drive, and some bad custom icons or bad bundle bits error now lie on on the main and one of your secondary drives, but not the previous problems. Also, you still cannot access that folder, however folders within that folder you can get to just fine, via the Go To Folder command or reveal in finder from iTunes.
Those symptoms appear to suggest that some directories structure and the volume information other than the main drive have lost their consistencies and a directory may be no longer accessible for some reason which happened before or during the Kernel Panic. Techtool Pro 4.0.6 seems to not be able to fix those problems. So if you have DiskWarrior 3.0.3, run it and hopefully fix them. If you do not have it, try the followings.
Connect the external FireWire drive in question, then boot into a Safe-mode. If this does not work well, first boot into a Safe-mode then connect the device.
Launch Terminal utility. Type diskutil list at the prompt. Here is an example to be displayed:
MyMachine:~ Myself$ diskutil list
/dev/disk0
#: type name size identifier
0: Applepartitionscheme *233.8 GB disk0
1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS MacOSX_HD 70.7 GB disk0s3
3: Apple_HFS Data_HD 162.8 GB disk0s5
/dev/disk1
#: type name size identifier
0: Applepartitionscheme *111.8 GB disk1
1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk1s1
2: Apple_HFS Data21HD 69.9 GB disk1s3
3: Apple_HFS Debugger_HD 41.6 GB disk1s5
Find the disk identifier that points the external device in question. Type sudo fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk1s3 if the target drive would be disk1s3. If the result shows you like below, the symptoms may be fixed.
MyMachine:~ Myself$ sudo fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk1s3
** /dev/rdisk1s3
** Checking HFS Plus volume.
** Checking Extents Overflow file.
** Checking Catalog file.
** Checking Catalog hierarchy.
** Checking Extended Attributes file.
** Checking volume bitmap.
** Checking volume information.
** The volume Data21HD appears to be OK.
If the above solution fails, boot into a Single-user-mode and perform the same way as above-- a "sudo" parameter MIGHT not be needed to type.
The third phase:
Start up from Mac OS X 10.4.x Install disc. Launch Disk Utility program. Try repairing the target volume(s) on the external device and then repair the permissions.
If the above solution fails to fix all filesystem problems on that volume, then you may need to abandon hope some file or folder in question to trash it/them. Of course, I do not hope so.…
Also, when I booted into Safe Mode it started up the volume menubar item as usual but I had no sound... Is this normal during a Safe boot?
Certain Mac OS X features do not work when you are started up in Safe Mode. For example, you can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use an AirPort card, use audio input or output devices, or use an internal or external USB modem.
So it should be no problem on this matter. -
Keep getting Kernel Panics-have important work coming up-please help
I am now in my 3rd reinstall of the OS this week. This time an Apple Genius did it at an Apple Store off their firewire drive. Every app and the OS is totally updated. My latest two Kernel Panics are listed below. It seems to always happen either when I have OSX Mail open and/or my Airport is on and connected to my Airport Express. Please let me know if you can make out what is listed below and what it means to me. Thanks!:

Maybe it's not the operating system. Maybe you have a hardware problem. -
During graphic intensive applications(gaming, netflix, etc), my macbook pro will randomly hard freeze(sometimes it's after a few minutes and other times several hours). I can't access any other applications during this, and I can't force quit using the shortcut. The only thing I can do is press the power button and turn it off. Somtimes I can move my mouse, and sometimes I can't. When I can, it is the colorful pinwheel.
I disabled automatic graphics switching, and that did not help. I then ran a hardware test, and it was hanging on the memory portion of the test. I took my mac to the apple store two weeks ago with this problem, and they thought it was a memory problem and replaced my memory (sidenote: I had taken my apple back for repairs in last October because of kernel panics. They replaced my hardrive, logicboard, and my memory, but they only put back in 4GB when I originally upgraded to 8GB). They upgraded my memory to the 8GB again with the replacement, and it seemed fine. I was using it without problems, but now my mac is having problems again.
Random freezes where I have to forcibly shut off my mac happen a couple times a day, and now I'm starting to get kernel panics. The kernel panics both involved the NVDAResman and Geforce in the extension backtrace. (I've had two kernel panics the past two days). It's also a lot slower starting up, and sometimes it freezes during the startup with the mac icon and the gray backdrop or the login screen forcing me to restart.
I ran the hardware test again out of curiosity, and it's still hanging at the memory portion of the test. I'm a little at a loss as to what to do.

A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -

Constant kernel panics since Mavericks update
Hardware is a mid 2010 MAcBook Pro 15", i7 2,66ghz, 8 GB RAM, 512 MB Video RAM.
I encounter regular kernel panics for a while now, I think since upgrading to Mavericks. Usually it used to happen every now and then, between once a week and once a month. So I did not really worry in the beginning. As it started getting on my nerves and neither volume repair nor hard ware test did indicate anything wrong, I decided to do a clean install of the latest Mavericks version a few days ago to see if that helps. kernel panics are still there and with the update to 10.9.3. today it seems even worse. I already had two kernel panics today, which make it four this week.
Attached is the latest kernel panic log:

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be or how to track it down? Might the video card or kernel extension be the problem? Any help would be highly appreciated.Seems I found an answer via another forum:
The kernel panic indicates that your GPU is failing. This is a known issue for your machine. Your model is subject to a replacement program for the logicboard due to a defective GPU. It lasts 3 years from the date of purchase.
I am in contact with apple and might take it into a retail store for further diagnostics. -
Kernel panics and video hangs on 27" mid-2011 iMac
I started having a occasional sudden grey screen about a month ago. At first I thought it was probably software and tried uninstalling/disabling a few things (like teleportd, audacity, midi-drivers), but the problem continued. I'd usually have to do an SMC reset to get the system to reboot. About a week and a half ago, the system started dropping to grey screen (or sometimes black screen) every few minutes and this continued despite multipe SMC and PRAM resets. On several of the restarts, the video was shifted so that the apple logo was off-center and I also saw some other display issues that looked kind of like interlace problems (jagged, flickering edges) but they were localized to certain areas of the screen. I tried unplugging everything except the keyboard and reseating the RAM, removing everything except the original 4GB that came in the box. I also tried booting into safe mode (successful, but the video was badly distorted) and booting from CD (hung at a white screen). I got a couple kernel panic notices during all of this. I noticed that the vent area on the top was very hot while this was happening, so I thought maybe the GPU was overheating. So, I made an appointment at the Genius bar for the next day and took it in, explained all of the things I'd tried and they ran a few diagnostics (permissions fix - nothing substantial was broken, basic hardware test - passed) and decided to keep it to run stress tests to see if they could recreate the issue. A week later, they told me they'd been running diagnostics all week, but couldn't reproduce the problem...
I picked the system up Saturday evening, took it home and decided to reinstall the OS to see if there was some corruption they just hadn't found with the permissions fix. I reinstalled Snow Leopard from the media kit, then did a clean Lion installation to a different disk partition. Patched, reinstalled a few pieces of software (Photoshop, Lightroom, Numbers, Pages, TrueCrypt, Parallels) and I also installed iStat and SMCFanControl (since I read that some people have successfully reduced or eliminated heat related crashes by stepping up the fan speeds). This evening, I had another round of the same issues that led me to take the system into the Apple store for repairs last week. I went through all of the same troubleshooting steps (again, including trying three different sets of RAM) and I have a ticket in for tech support to call me Thursday...
I got two kernel panics during this and both appear to be related to video problems. I'd appreciate any feedback on whether this looks like a software or hardware problem... or if you see anything I'm missing that looks like something I could fix. I'm really not looking forward to putting it back in the shop for a week to be told they can't find anything wrong with it
First panic (during this one, I still had a few USB devices plugged in):

What's that? Try temporarily uninstalling that and the Parallels.
For any possible culprit kernel extensions, it is not necessary to completely uninstall the parent program.
You can temporarily uninstall any .kext, which may be causing the problem, by doing the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste.
sudo kextunload
Important, leave a space after kextunload
Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.
This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.
This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.
Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

Kernel panic in 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro 3,1 any time a USB device is plugged in
I updated my MacBook Pro 3,1 (late 2007) from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8, and when the update was completed, any time any USB device was plugged in to either USB port, there was an instant kernel panic.
I checked carefully to confirm that this also happened after booting into Safe Mode to disable any extensions or login items.
So I had no choice but to revert to 10.6.7 and apply a few updates and patches short of 10.6.8.
I'm writing this to report this bug to Apple. I hope they address this issue. If anybody can tell me how to access the correct system log recording the kernel panics and submit it to Apple, I'd be willing to do that.CMCSK: Thanks for the link, but you provided no further instructions, such as exactly WHERE to report the problem. So for now I'm just going to post the information right here.
MacBook Pro 15-inch, 3,1, Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 6GB RAM, 500GB hard drive with about 300GB free.
Main hard drive is Hitachi HTS725050A9A364:
Capacity: 500.11 GB (500,107,862,016 bytes)
S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified
Boots up normally with no perpherals attached, but crashes the instant that anything is plugged into any USB port. Here are two kernel panic logs.

I am receiving nearly hourly kernel panics on 2014 retina mbp
Starting last night, seemingly out of the blue, I have been receiving nearly hourly kernel panics / crashes on my 3 week old Retina MBP. At first I thought my USB mouse was causing it, but it has since happened again after I stopped using it.
I have booted into safe mode and it doesn't seem to happen while I'm there.
I have two kernel panic logs and a whole bunch of crash logs. One of the kernel logs is below:

Cairngorm close and background disable
So after trying to write a custom class for TitleWindow popups for two weeks, I just couldn't invest any more time in getting them to work. So as an alternative I am using Cairngorm popup 1.7. Everything involving creating the popup works great, but
