Two keys on external keyboard suddenly stop working, cannot log in

I have an iMac with Snow Leopard, USB keyboard (not wireless). From one moment to the next the "a" and "s" keys suddenly stopped working. I checked in the Universal Access and Speech panes as others with similar problems were advised  and this was not the problem. I tried restarting the computer to see if that would help but it did not, and now I can't log in because these letters are in my password. HELP!!!!

Try another USB keyboard. (most any brand will work)
Personally I use Logitech MK120 - USB Keyboard & Mouse Combo's with all my Mac's.

  • Wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working - changed batteries still did not help

    Hi
I have an Envy 20 all in one touchscreen with a wireless keyboard which has been absolutley fantastic until now.  The wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working while composing an email.  I replaced the batteries and checked them with a volt meter to ensure 1.5v. They are a name brand alkiline battery.  I tried re-booting the computer and pressing the blue connect button under the keyboard.  The only keys that seem to work are the volume up/down and mute; the rest of teh keyboard does not.  Any idea?  I like the factory keyboard so I am hoping it is not a faulty keyboard.  After market keyboards will use a USB port.
    Thanks

    Hello @Thor66,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your wireless keyboard is not working and you are looking for assistance. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Troubleshooting, which will walk you through the troubleshooting process for your wireless keyboard.
Now if this does not work and you have to replace the keyboard do not fear you can replace the keyboard and the dongle without using another USB port as the one that is in can be replaced. I would be happy to assist you further and/or walk you through changing out the dongle from a new wireless keyboard, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer. I am linking an HP Support document below that will show you how to find your product number. As well, if you could indicate which operating system you are using. And whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit as with this and the product number I can provide you with accurate information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please re-post with the requested information and I would be happy to provide you with assistance. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Keyboard suddenly stopped working

The keyboard and trackpad suddenly stopped responding on my Macbook Pro 13" (Fall 2011) when I was doing regular work. When I rebooted the computer it says it cannot find any keyboard. Any suggestions?
I'm sorry I don't have much more to add.
edit: Now it's working again, just out of the blue! Doesn't feel too good though.

Try resetting the PRAM and the SMC - often fixes odd faults like this.

  • Keyboard suddenly stops working

When my computer has been on for awhile (a day or so) the keyboard stops working if I restart the computer I usually can type again. This just started recently and I've had this computer for about 3 years. Anyone else had this problem?

Actually was checking some other threads on the site and this seems to be a common problem. Found this advice so hopefully that will fix it.

I called Apple Support today, and after doing what they told me I haven't had a problem since (knock on wood!).
    Try the following:
    1) Shut down your MacBook and disconnect everything (including power adapter and battery)
    2) Hold the power button for 10 seconds (resets something...don't remember what)
    3) Put the battery back in and plug the AC adapter back in.
    4) Turn on the computer and as soon as you press the power button, press in the following keys: apple, option, R, and P, and keep pressing. As soon as you turn on the computer, you normally hear the cool little apple chime. After you hear the chime, the screen will go black and act as if it's turning on again. Once the little Apple chime plays the second time, release the four keys.
Hopefully this will correct the problem. I did it about five hours ago and haven't had any problems since.

  • Right-click on Magic Mouse and Volume Controls on Wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working

I am running Mavericks 10.9.2 on an Late 2012 iMac.
One morning the right click on my Magic Mouse and the volume controls on the wireless keyboard stopped working.
These mouse and keyboard themselves seem fine; they work okay ehn used on a MacBook.
Everything else about the mouse and keyboard is fine.
This seems to be a problem what has been around for a whole, with a wide variety of solutions.
    I have read
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16799039#16799039
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23474052#23474052
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19660884#19660884
    and have tried
Clicking on and off the 'right click' checkbox in the Mouse System Preferences - No effect
    Deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist - No effect
Restarting in Safe Mode - When starting in safe mode, the computer crashes out and restarted
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM - Is it CTRL+CMD+P+R or CMD+OPT+P+R ?  Neither work for me (I do try it using a wired keyboard, but never get the double chime)
Upgraded to 10.9.2 - no effect
Moved the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHIDMouse.kext and AppleHIDKeyboard.kext and and back in (and re-authenticate) - No joy
Moved the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHIDMouse.kext and AppleHIDKeyboard.kext from a working MacBook on same OS - Made the keyboard misbehave even more
Has anyone got any other cures for this?
    Thanks in advance.

Here is what worked for me.  My scrolling on the mighty mouse and a few buttons on my wireless keyboard weren't working properly.  I reset the SMC, a link explaining the process is below.  Hope it helps you too!

  • My external display suddenly stopped working...help?!?

I have a 2009 MBP that I have been using in clamshell mode for the past 1.5 yrs.  I've had it hooked up to a LG Flatron M2362D 23" HD monitor for about 6 months or so.  I have never even had a hiccup until now.  However, about 30 mins ago, my display decided to stop working.  I have it hooked up with the mini-DVI.  I tried switching to my 19" Dell monitor (which I know works) to check and see if it was just my display, however the problem persists.  Is anyone else having this problem?  Does anyone know how to fix it?

I wish I could help, but I'm here because I just began having the same problem.  Everything worked great until a few days ago.  The external monitor works great with my old Dell laptop, just not with my Macbook Pro.  This is really frustrating.

  • External speakers suddenly stop working

My 13" aluminum MacBook's internal speakers are working fine.  External speakers and headphones were also working fine until yesterday.  Now, external speakers do not work with my MacBook at all, and with headphones I get a very muddled, echoy sound.  This happened overnight - my laptop was just sitting, not plugged in, on my desk.  I've tried restarting and resetting the NVRAM - no help.
I have a 13" Aluminum Unibody MacBook running OSX 10.7.5.
    Please help!

    >I had a quick look this morning and sure enough, a YouTube clip was playing, but no sound.
This happened to me too using an Tecra A11 unit.
The Youtube clip had no sound but if I plugged and re-plugged the headphone jack, the sound appeared again.
I thought this was a problem with headphone jack but I wanted to check if this issue could be solved by driver reinstallation.
Firstly I uninstalled the Realtek sound driver from the system. Then I entered the device manager and deleted the High definition Audio Controller from the System Devices area.
In Audio , video and games controller I deleted the Intel display audio entry.
    Finally I rebooted the system.
After new reboot the Windows recognized the deleted devices. I checked the playback tab in control panel -> sound and found new device Headphones which was not visible before.
Then I started Youtube and checked the sound. It was available. Then I installed the newest version of Realtek HD audio driver and rebooted the unit.
    The sound was still there
So hopefully it was just and driver issue

  • Satellite A30 keyboard suddenly stopped working - how to remove and replace?

Hi all, n00b to laptops and first post. Ok, I usually build and repair desktops, so much easier to gain aceess!!
My daughter switched on her A30 laptop last night and only 2 keys worked. Tried rebooting and getting into BIOS but couldnt. Tried getting it to boot into safe mode, only the up and down arrow working so could not select safe mode...doh. Am guessing this must be a harware problem.
Rebooted into Xp an opened up notepad....this time about 5 keys working. Reboot, 3 key etc etc.
How do I get to the ribbon cable to make sure it is seated properly. Is it common for a keyboard to fail in this way and is it easy to get a replacement?
At the mo, have all the small screws I can find out, removed battery, DVD rom and hard drive. Seems to be held towards the middle and rear. Dont want to force it and break something else!
    TIA.

OK, so I had to laugh....flip the little cover on the top of the laptop and there are the 2 screws that hold the keyboard in place....lol
The ribbon cable was just about in its connector. Pushed it in and engaged the two locking tabs on the plastic retainer...job done!
Put it back together, fired up and Bingo! we have a keyboard again!
Oh well, may help someone else I guess.
Now she has no excuse for not doing her homework!

  • Wired keyboard suddenly stopped working.... help!

I have just turned on my iMac to find the Bluetooth Set-up Assistant trying to "locate a keyboard" even though there is one plugged in and was working perfectly fine when I last shut down. I have tried all 3 USB ports at rear of iMac and the keyboard is still not recognised but the mouse works. I am currently using a keyboard from an older Mac that works fine so is there anything I can do to get the computer to accept the new keyboard again? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, try the SMC Reset route..

  • External monitor suddenly stopped working at 2440x1440 on OS Lion 10.7.3

    Hi,
I have a 27" iMac and I'm using Samsung SyncMaster SA850 as a second monitor (connected via a displayPort cable with a mini DisplayPort adapter).
Everything worked fine until yesterday - the Samsung screen turned black and now it only works with max resolution 1280 x 1024 (native is 2440x1440). I think I upgraded Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 (I don't remember for sure though).
When I connect the monitor to an iMac with 10.7.2 everything works fine. And another iMac with 10.7.3 has the same problem as me.
Any ideas what could be wrong, please?
    Thanks!
    Tomas

It's very temperamental i find.   I have just moved house and when i reconnected everyting i couldn't get the monitor to work properly.   I played around for a while and eventually changed my input from DVI1 to DVI2, then played with the input button at the bototm of the screen (the one just on left of the power button) and somehow it just seemed to click into place...  Frustrating i realise, but now that it's up and running it looks great and, I daresay, looks much better than the 27" thunderbold display in my opinion... primarily because the non-reflective surface is great, but also because it is so easily height adjustable, a feature which unfortunately is non existent on the mac monitor.
    good luck anyway...

  • Hello, my backspace and enter keys suddenly stopped working. I have done a PRAM reset and used the keyboard viewer to see if the buttons work and they don't.  The PRAM reset didn't work  either

Dear All,  the backspace and enter keys on my wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working.  Im using OS 10.7.5 and have tried a PRAM reset which didn't work.  I also used the keyboard viewer to see if the keys worked on that but they don't.  This is driving me mad, can anyone please tell me what to do?  It happened just after an update but this could be a coincidence.  Thank you for your time

For my computers, though some of them support BlueTooth devices and accessories,
my preference and economy of standard, is to have wired USB and also use powered
    USB hubs for accessories.
I've used USB wired keyboards and mouse products; and some I've bought from the
    original owners who had upgraded to BT, and never used the new Apple USB model;
so I have spares of these on-hand since they seldom fail, but do work when BT won't.
    {A SMC reset should not cause a problem, or seldom has; but can solve some.}
In my opinion, the wired USB keyboard is an essential accessory, if not a necessary
primary means of user access on a continuous basis. At least until the wires fail...!

  • I have a wireless bluetooth keyboard and it doesnt flash the usuall green when it is turned on. I was doing playing video games and my keyboard suddenly didnt work and i checked for the green light and it was off. I tried changing batteries. Pls help.

I was using my key board when it suddenly stopped working. I changed the batteries and still no luck. I also tryed to manually connect the keyboard back to bluetooth but that also didnt work. I thought about the time when there was a battery leak in the keyboard and that could be the problem but i question it being able to work with the battery leak. It also isnt lighting up green in a little hole on the right side coner of the keyboard. I dont have a backup keyboard and i cant log in to the computer without it. It could possibley be that the keyboard completely doesnt work and i dont know if it does. Please Help.

The "enter" key on the numeric keypad of my external mac keyboard has stopped working with my Macbook pro.  If I plug the keyboard into any other computer, that entier key works fine. I'm using a standard Mac wired keyboard, & it's worked fine for 2 years now. Help!

Do you have any resolution to this problem in the end? Because it happened to me an exact same thing.
Please share if you have found a solution to your problem. I also cannot think of what I did wrong to disable the Enter key.
