Two libraries after latest OS X & iPhoto upgrade?!?

Just upgraded OS X to 10.8.2 and iPhoto to the new version.  Now, whenever I launch iPhoto while holding down the Alt key (to manually choose the library so that it gets repaired on launch), I see TWO libraries listed: iPhoto Library and iPhoto Library.
When I use Finder or two terminal to look at the folder, there is only ONE library listed.
The behavior, number of pictures, albums, etc. is identical no matter which library I choose to launch.
I've even tried manually choosing my library, opening and closing iPhoto, rebooting several times, same thing.
The WEIRD thing is that I have the SAME probably on two different Macs: 2007 MBP and 2010 MBA.  They each have completely different libraries, two!  The MBP library has 40,000 pictures.  The MBA library has 6 pictures.
The only other difference is that on the MBP Atl-launch window, in the two listings of iPhoto Library and iPhoto Library to choose from in the window, the first listing has the word "(default)" after it.
Because of the size of the library on the MBP (120 GB), I know that the second "iPhoto Library" is merely a pointer, or shortcut, to my iPhoto Library.  If there really was a completely separate library with all the pictures, I would have 120 GB less free space.
Anyone else having this problem?

If you click on the bottom library what is the file path that is  displayed?
Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Updating iPhoto Libraries for latest Update of IPhoto version fails

I have ILife 11 and have IPhoto Libraries in different locations and now that the program says they need to be "updated for the latest version of IPhoto", but when I start the update the Mac always gets the rolling Beachball "eventually" and the error report says system hung. What do I do? I am in Lion OS. Are my libraries too big? They are on large External drives. (1TB or bigger). They worked with the my older IPhoto's versions so why not with the update? This was from an auto update message from Apple for IPhoto. When locating a library, a message tells me I need to update it to work with latest IPhoto, and asks, UPDATE? I hit yes.
Can I put these libraries in someplace special for my Mac to be able to update them? Can my Lion be reinstalled as a possible fix? If so how? This is wrong for Apple to screw up their loyal customers computers. Photo libraries are precious.
    IPhoto Fans please help.
    Lion OS 10.7.3
    IPhoto 9.2.1 in application folder

What format are these external disks?

  • Two libraries after installing Mavericks ?

I noticed that I have now two libraries. One at the right place and the other in a file named System. I don't know if I can delete the second one. Thank you for your help.

Hi  CathfromMorocco and  welcome to the Apple Support Communities-
You really have no business in the System Folder, especially if you do not know what you are doing, this will only lead to trouble.
Enjoy your Mac and stick to your user account in the Finder sidebar,  prudent to have a Time Machine back up in place, or a Boot Clone as cheap insurance.

  • IPhoto Library 'disappeared' after Yosemite crash and iPhoto upgrade

I have upgraded my iMac to Yosemite and have been using iPhoto fine since then (although it is a bit slow),  yesterday iPhoto crashed the computer, after several restarts the computer was ok, but iPhoto wouldn't load and then said it needed to be upgraded - So I did this and when I opened this again it crashed then said that it needed to upgrade the library and then it crashed (iPhoto) when I restarted it started with no library and would appear to have overwritten the iPhoto (default) library, I have checked this and although there are other libraries, I am aware of these and these are not my missing library.  I found some information on http://www.scanyourentirelife.com/all-my-pictures-in-iphoto-disappeared-how-to-s afely-get-them-back/ and this talks about looking in the 'Masters' file but to be very careful as altering this will cause problems with edits etc.  Anyway I found that in my directory a file called 'Old Masters' as well as 'Masters' and it would appear that all of my pictures are now in 'Old Masters'.
So I am opening the right file but how do I make the 'Old Masters' the 'Masters' - is it as easy as shifting the files or changing the name on the file?
Tech Stuff - My iMac is running 10.10 Yosemite and is about 1 year old 27" version and I keep everything up to date (for my sins) - My library 700+ events and is about 176gb in size
    Your help would be appreciated

    Armelle,
there is unfortunately not yet any known way to repair an iPhoto Library, that got corrupted during the upgrade by a crash.
You can either restore your iPhoto library from the last backup you made before you tried to upgrade the library, and then try to upgrade again.
Or if your last backup cannot be restored or is too old, copy all photos you can find in the iPhoto Library package and import them into a new iPhoto Library.
but I can see my picture in "old Thumbnails".
The "Old Thumbnails" are only smaller sized versions of your photos. Don't you at least have "Old Originals" or "Old Modified"?

  • I have two libraries now.  One for iPhoto and one for Photos

The Photos library is significantly smaller than the the iPhoto library.  70gb versus 105 gb.
I read I can delete the older iPhoto program and library but why would it be so much larger if it is based on the same photos.  Why isn't the new Photos Library the same size?
    Thanks
    glen

You cannot have two different TC setups.. at least until Mountain Lion.. it did introduce some changes but I am not sure if you can setup two different configurations for TM.. you can use two different devices to back up to. I doubt this will help you.
You might be better using a real backup software.. superduper, CCC, chronosync etc.
The TC by default is available to any Mac in the network to do backups. TM will sort itself out and put each computer on a different backup. These are kept in separate sparsebundles.. so that is all fine.

  • After upgrading to Aperture 3 I had to 'upgrade' all files. When this was done, there was an Aperture 3 library and the original Aperture 2 library. Are the two libraries identical and can I safely trash the Aperture 2 library?

After upgrading to Aperture 3 I had to 'upgrade' all files. When this was done, there was an Aperture 3 library and the original Aperture 2 library. Are the two libraries identical and can I safely trash the Aperture 2 library?

If the upgrade completed successfully and you are running Aperture 3 on the converted library and you're sure all the images that were in the old library are in the new library then you could delete the Aperture 2 library.
However I'm the paranoid type and when it comes to deleting images I'm always hesitant. If you can fine a place to archive the old library that  would be your a better option.
At a minimum I would keep the old library around for a month or so after switching to Aperture 3 just to make sure in case something pops up.

  • Iphoto still grayed out after iphoto upgrade after mavericks install, what should I do?

After upgrading to mavericks Iphoto was Grayed out. The computer Notified me that I would have to upgrade iphoto from 9.2.1 to to latest version.
went to the mac app store, the upgrade page showed the iphoto upgrade, it downloaded and installed the upgrade but iphoto is still grayed out in the dock and in the applications folder. The mac app store shows the iphoto upgrade as being installed. whot should I do?

First, make sure the new copy of iPhoto was not installed as a separate icon in your Applications folder.
If that's not the case, try launching it anyway; I've seen instances where the icon fails to update until the associated application is launched for the first time.

  • There are way too many photos on my internal hard drive. I have older libraries, and newer libraires in iPhoto and Aperture 2.  What is the best way to find and reduce the number of duplicate photos/libraries  before upgrading to Aperture 3?

    Sharon-
    Good idea.
    Back up first.
I would probably wait for the merge function of the latest version before merging. Be sure to verify every merge.
Merge Libraries, then from within Aperture move images to referenced on external hard drives.

  • Gtk messed up after latest upgrade

After latest upgrades it seems that anything gtk-related (2 or 3) is drawn as garbage, see image on http://i.imgur.com/g57D0KS.jpg
Tiled-qt on the left looks fine, however, as does chromium.

I have the same problem too. the same graphic card model.
I temporarily change the driver to 'vesa' or 'fbdev' to make it render right.
but it may cause the resolution smaller.
    any suggestion ?

  • Cannot open iPhoto after downloading Yosemite, I am running iPhoto 6.9 and have downloaded the iPhoto upgrade 1.1 to no avail

Cannot open iPhoto after downloading Yosemite. I have upgraded to iPhoto 6.9 and have downloaded iPhoto upgrader 1.1 to no avail.

Did you go to your Applications/Utilities folder and actually double click on the updater to run it?

  • HELP!! I had two libraries in iPhoto, Photos imported the wrong one, and now I have lost 10,000  photos. How can I get them back??

I originally had two libraries in iPhoto, my wife and I share two iMacs at different locations but we wanted to share the photos and it was set up this way Apple Geniuses at the store I have no idea why. Anyway, I updated to OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.3 with the new 'photos' app. It asked me to choose one of the libraries and evidently I assume I must have chosen the wrong one. It only imported 322 random photos, not the 10,000+ we had in iPhoto. I can no longer find these photos or the other library anywhere, it appears to have been deleted. I have tried 'alt' clicking the icon which used to open a 'choose library' box, but this no longer works in photos or iPhoto. I have no idea where it has gone and it contains precious memories over the years including the birth of our children. Can someone please help???

Where is your iPhoto library stored?
my wife and I share two iMacs at different locations but we wanted to share the photos and it was set up this way Apple Geniuses at the store I have no idea why.
Since you are sharing it between two Macs, is the library on an external drive or a NAS, or another remotely mounted volume?
If the library is not on a directly connected disk, formatted MacOS Extended, move the original iPhoto Library to a directly connected, correctly disk.
And the try first the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools on that library.  Repair the permissions, and repair the database in iPhoto.  Then try to migrate again to Photos.
To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto Library to launch the iPhoto Library First Aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
The select "Repair Permissions". And then repeat, but select "Repair Database"
But make a current backup of your iPhoto Library before you try this.

  • After iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive, after iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive

I was just about to order a photo book, using photos stored on an external hard drive. I organised the book and pressed 'buy'. IPhotos instructed me that I needed to upgrade and so I went on the ASpp store, bought the upgrade and installed as directed. I then used the iPhoto Library upgrader as directed.
After the iPhoto upgrade I can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive. I am able to access the photos stored on my internal hard drive - the remainder (including the photo album) seem to have vanished into thin air.
    Any suggestions please?

What format is the external drive?

  • How do i upgrade from 6.0.6 to the latest version of iPhoto . I have a mac pro with OS 10.7.5 ?

How do i upgrade from 6.0.6 to the latest version of iPhoto . I have a mac pro with OS 10.7.5 ?

The latest version of iPhoto  - 9.5.1 -  requires MacOS X 10.9.x.  Is it possible to upgrade your Mac to Mavericks? Then you can buy the latest iPhoto from the AppStore.
If your Mac does not support Mavericks, you could upgrade to iPhoto 9.4.3, see:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1650  , but this version is no longer availbale from the AppStore. Buy a boxed retail version of iPhoto '11 from Amazon or eBay, and then update it from the support page  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1650  .

  • After latest upgrade, iPOD sync VERY SLOW ??

after latest iTunes upgrade,  my iPOD classic sync is very slow - new podcasts (5) took over 6 hrs to sync ??
anyone having these issues ??  thx

f you change your Sync password, you might see this error message on your other devices "Sync encountered an error while connecting: Incorrect name or password." error appears in the bottom error bar. You can update your password on your device by completing the following steps:
    * Click the '''menu button''' and choose '''Options'''.
    * Select the '''Sync''' panel.
    * Click ''''''Sign in'''''' and enter your password in the sign in page.
    * Click '''Sign in''' to sign back in to Sync.

  • Delay after key stroke in iPhoto following latest update

I just updated to the latest version of iPhoto in the hope of seeing improvements which I am sure they are. However, right now, the only change I see is that there is a delay after each character I type in the legend.  It is unbearable and close to being unsusable.  Is anyone else experiencing this issue and were you able to fix it somehow?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
