Two Mac Computers and Time Capsule can't network all

I have two Mac computers, a Mac Mini and a MacBook Pro. I also have a Time Capsule. For some reason I can only connect from my Mac Mini to the MacBook Pro, but not from the MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini. On the MacMini, when I go to Go menu in the finder and then Network, I see the Time Capsule and the MacBook Pro. If I want to go the other way MacBook Pro to the MacMini all I see when I go to Go menu in the finder and then Network, is the Time Capsule. I have searched all over the internet to find an answer to fix the problem but I have not found anything. Help! Please.

Well, I wrote my question at 2am after hours of experimentation. The next day all seems well. It seems changing the broadcast frequency worked, but they needed time to decide they liked each other. I wish I'd known that 6 months ago! It was weird because when I first plugged the time capsule on this time it seemed the MacBook detected it just fine. Then I worked to get the internet connection going and it all went sideways. Very mysterious. Thanks for reading.

  • Two Macs using separate Time Capsules on same network - The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 2.)

Six hours of configuration and I'm out of ideas.
    Here's the layout:
Cisco Cable Modem connects to my ISP. It uses DHCP to distribute IP addresses which is necessary as ethernet throughout the house is piggybacked on coax and the ethernet to coax adapter has a mac address and needs to take an IP address (DirectTV - not my idea). Though not my preferred config, this seems solid.
Cable Modem connects via ethernet (though this crazy coax adapter) to Downstairs Time Capsule (call it DTC). DTC is set to create network without using DHCP so that no duplicate IPs are dished out. No problems so far - everything works. DTC has a MacMini hooked up by parallel ethernet and the MacMini is set to back up to the DTC disk, called "Combo Time Machine". Back up is running smoothly, no problems.
On the same network there is another Time Capsule connected, called Upstairs Time Capsule (UTC). UTC is set to create network in bridge mode so as to repeat the network created by the DTC (to increase range). All of this is, network-wise, is working fine:
UTC is connected by parallel ethernet to an iMac which I want to back up to the UTC disk, called "iMac Time Machine". This is where the problem starts. It seems logical that one Mac could backup to one Time Capsule while a different Mac back up to a different Time Capsule, even though everything is on the same network, right?
So here's what I see while using the iMac to try to configure Time Machine upstairs:
    Looks good, right?
It's as if the Time Machine software confuses the two Time Capsules - it's asking for the Downstairs Time Capsule disk password, not the Upstairs one as it should be. Still, I try the password and here's what I get:
"The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 2)" means nothing to me... little help?

I have an idea this is going to take some working out.
What IP is the upstairs TC and what IP is the downstairs one?
Can you ping them both please by name and by IP address?
Can you manually mount the share you will use for time machine in the iMac upstairs..
In finder go, connect to server.
    Type in the name AFP://user@TCname
You will then be asked for the password and it should be able to be stored in the keychain. Then select that for TM.. if TM still carries on, reset it and try again. See A4 here.

The double entry and refusing to join the right disk is a Mountain Lion trait.

  • 2 Computers and Time Capsule as  server

Hi I'm using 2 Mac computers and trying to find a way to manage only 1 iTunes library and 1 iPhoto library.
I have put those 2 libraries on my TC. It is working fine with the exception that it makes it almost impossible to browse your pictures from either computer because it is slow and images scrolling is always interrupted because of the transfer of data back and forth. Same when I play music on either computer.
Is there a better way to do this without interruption of images or music file? I also have a .Mac account (though not very familiar with it). Should I be using the shared folder?
Your help will be greatly appreciated
    Simon

This is my first server that i want to share out of my home network.
It is much easier to share the disk that is connected to the broadband. You should change over your present arrangement so the server you want to share to WAN is the primary router. The old existing TC which I guess has been taking that job should be bridged.
You can then get WAN access.. but you might need to use Lion plus iCloud. Unless you have a public IP.
Please first of all download and install 5.6 utility as i guess you are running Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Then you need to figure out how you are going to access WAN port as there is one key issue.. your public IP from the ISP is more than likely dynamic and keeps changing.. so you need to use BTMM from iCloud connection ..
Or you need to buy a static IP from your ISP..
Or you need to use a different router that is vpn server capable. Ie you must put both TC in bridge and replace it with a proper vpn router.
To help with specifics you need to tell us what kind of broadband you have, what modem you have.. and if your ISP offers static IP.
Do a google search Time Capsule remote access.. there are plenty of posts with explanation of how to do it.
    The official Apple way.

    Visit
The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on the hard drive. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

  • Air cards and Time capsule can it work

I currently connect to the internet via an air card specifically Sierra wireless with a usb connection. Can I make my Time capsule work with this configuration. If so how can I hook this up so that it works properly.

I have an equally complex setup with a managed switch actually but I have never seen the TC have this kind of issue.
What I do notice is you have changed the TC from defaults.. you are using a non-default IP range.
I have run across issues like this where people move things from default.
I would like you to start over.. factory reset the TC. That will set it back to default router mode.
Do the min setup on the TC..
    1. Change all names from what you were using. That includes the TC name and wireless name/s
Make them short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric because that is the correct way to network. Apple default names with spaces and apostrophes are fundamentally bad.
    2. With just the TC plugged into the switch.. and a single computer connected by ethernet. Power cycle the whole network.. this allows the switch to clear all the old MAC address.
    3. Test on the computer just ethernet. Turn the wireless off.
The computer must use dhcp and must get an ip from the TC.
It has to get the correct Router.. ie Gateway.. I wish apple could stick with proper network terminology.
And it must get same address or valid DNS server address/es.
If it fails.. please plug ethernet directly to the TC.. bypassing the switch.
You should get the standard IP addressing and internet connection.
If not please post the screenshot from the Mac of the network preferences showing the ethernet setup.
I need to see what address it does get. I need you to make sure the ethernet is the TOP of the list. So rearrange the order of network connection. With the airport off it should just go to the top of the list.
If it appears to be working .. but a browser cannot connect, open a terminal and ping an internet address.
Ping the actual gateway address the ISP gives you and ping the ISP dns address.

  • Mac mini and time capsule

i have a new MacMini {end of 2009} and just bought a 2TETRA Time Capsule.
I am a bit confused as to which is the best way to set it up.
these are what seem to be my options: to plug the Wan cable directly into my router from the TC and then wirelessly connect to my MM and other things or to leave the MM plugged into the router and somehow plug the TC into the router.
what would be the best way to do this?
    thanx
    safed

thanx for all the feedback it has been very helpful.
one rather pedestrian question: i had to backup approx 130 GB from a 320 internal disk onto the TC. it took about 14 hours, why so much time?
my other question is as follows: i have a modem and a router with five ports which i have been using until now. from what i have been able to glean the TC router is much more powerful and seemingly it would be preferable to use it.
as of now the old router is plugged into the modem and the TC into the router. what i would like to do is to plug the TC directly into the modem and the router into one of the ports on the TC since i have need for more ports than the TC has.
am i correct to assume that if i do this the TC will takeover as the active and primary router and my old router{which is also a wireless} will be sort of a designated "hub" for the other ethernet connections i need and will not function as wireless etc.?
one more pedestrian question: recently when the dialogue box appears for the admin permission it is not readable but all garbled in some kind of mess.
i did verify disk and disk permissions but to no avail.
    how can i fix this?
my MM is running primarily on Eng and the i use Hebrew and Arabic.
    thanx

  • Wireless between Mac Mini and Time Capsule occasionally goes out.

Is there a known issue with certain models of Mac mini's with wireless issues?
I have a Core 2 Duo Mac Mini (with OS X 10.6.6) with a Time Capsule (7.5.2) used as a wireless router. I also have an iMac, a MacBook, a Windows XP machine and 3 iPhones that connect to the Time Capsule. However, my issues only exists with the Mac Mini which sits about 10 feet away from the Time Capsule and is closer than any other computer.
In short, it appears that my Mac Mini intermittently does not connect to the internet. The wireless signal in the menu bar is fully black the whole time. I've tried connecting to a the regular wireless signal and the 5GHz signal. There is no pattern to the intermittence that I notice. I have a constant ping running on google.com as I'm typing this, and will ping successfully 70%-80% of the time and timeout the rest of the time, all while the wireless indicator in the menu bar is full. This issue has come and gone for about a year now. There will be weeks and sometimes months that the issue doesn't appear, and then sometimes it seems to happen several times a day. Sometimes a reboot seems to resolve the issue, sometimes not. It seems that when I'm not doing anything on the internet, the pings continue to respond successfully, but once I start to "surf" is when the connection will start to drop out again. For instance, if I start watching a YouTube video or stream an audio file, the signal drops out again for a while. Sometimes it will reconnect on its own, sometimes i have to turn the Wireless off and then back on to get it to reconnect. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Any ideas?

  • Time Machine and Time Capsule - Failing with Network Problem

My problems with TM/TC have been ongoing for a couple of months now and I am going round in circles - need help.
This is the second post I have made, the first got lost in people suggesting the obvious - so I will try to be a little more specific if I can.
I will detail the current state first - i.e. where I am now - after I will list what I have done so far to get to this point.
Currently, my iMac (intel) is directly connected by Ethernet 1GB to the Time Capsule. The TC is then connected to a Netgear router which in turn is connected to Internet.
I have no network problems at all - internet connection is fine. the Netgear Router has the latest firmware version and is working fine. The porblems i have are nothing to do with this.
The time Capsule is in Bridge mode and getting a reserved dhcp IP address from the Netgear router.
The Time Capsule has been fully reset - i.e. power cable out, hold the reset button, plug in power cable (spark, spark), hold reset button, fast blink for 20 seconds or so, light goes out, release button.
I have re-applied the latest Time Capsule firmware.
I have renamed the disk on the Time Capsule.
I have renamed my iMac and deleted all the time capsule entries from Keychain.
I have re-installed Mac OSX and re-updated to the latest 10.5.6 release.
At the moment I have kicked off a backup with a lot of large files - like music folder, video folder etc excluded. I also have parallels and have excluded the disk image. I have 1 other 50GB disk image which is also excluded.
I am expecting the first initial backup will complete successfully.
I will then remove music and video from exclusions and allow them to backup. I am expecting this will complete no problem. (I do this because the upcoming problem will happen if I move away from the machine - and I dont want to sit there for 2 days).
So up to this point TM and TC have performed flawlessly. The issue that follows started happening before the 10.5.6 update after backing up with no issues for months. At this point I will be able to use TM to browse the backup and restore files. I will be able to mount the sparse bundle and browse files. Spotlight reports no issues and indexes quickly.
If I leave my machine after a successful backup and the hourly update kicks in it will fail with 'A Network problem' basically saying the backup has filed because of a network problem, but is not any more specific, logs show far too much to put the whole thing here, but the following is an excerpt

It goes on and on and is repeated every hour. For each one I get an error message on screen saying backup failed due to a network error. However I have tried a manual download over the same period set at an extremely slow rate so that it was downloading during this time and it showed no errors. I.e. the network connection from imac, through TC to netgear and out to internet - and monitored this while time machine showed these errors (i.e. at the same time) and this showed no connection problems at all and completed succesfully.
I know TM uses an internal address to do backups, but uses the same cable and network card to get the job done. I am simply removing the cable as a source of issue although I have also replaced this making no difference.
Applecare are involved and have so far been sent 2 sets of logs and so far have not been able to find the cause. New TC is on its way to try that, although they think it is something on the imac that is causing this.
Sleep mode is turned off although screen sleep is on. The tick is not in the box for putting hard drives to sleep whenever possible.
Now, after this has happened, and back at the machine. I restart both imac and TC. Try running a backup, spotlight starts to re-index - i.e. will mount the backup volume and start the index process, gets to about 90% then fails - again excerpts from log

  • Time Capsule- can I network USB speakers?

I just bought a time capsule and a macBook pro to replace my old iMac and Airport Extreme base station. Can I hook my USB Soundsticks to the USB port on my Time Capsule and network these speakers? How can I do this?

Can I hook my USB Soundsticks to the USB port on my Time Capsule and network these speakers?
No. That port can only be used for hard drives, flash drives, printers, or a hub which is used to connect two or more of those devices.

  • I have sync with the same key installed in 2 mac computers and one Pc. However the info does not sync if I add bookmarks on one device with the bookmarks on the other devices

I have a sync account and have the app installed between my two mac computers and one pc. However, if I add bookmarks in one device, this is not updated on the other device. What should I do.

    Hi!
Before Firefox 7 the service used to take some time to upload the changes and then to download them. Make sure that you wait several hours to confirm that it's not something else.
You can force them by using the "Sync Now" option in the Tools menu.
Fortunately, the behavior have changed with Firefox 7 and now the bookmark changes are instant.

  • Best way to extend wireless via airport express and time capsule

best way to extend wireless via airport express and time capsule
i live in a two storey house where i use my airport express to create a wireless network in the main floor, and time capsule to extend it in the upper floor, where my room is. i have like 16 mbps in the main floor, and 2-3 mbps in the upper floor after having speediest.
i used time capsule in the upper floor because i use wireless backup daily and don't want to put internet down while i im doin it and consequently my parent can have internet access in the main floor, am i right? or do i have make just the opposite in order to have a good internet speed?
secondly, while checking airport express wireless mode on airport utility, there is like 4 different type of radio mode(802 11n bg comp, 802 11n 2.4, 802 11n a comp, 802 11n 5ghz) which i have no idea what they mean
    what do you recommend?
we have like iphone4, iphone 3g, mbookpro, ipad, ipad 2, samsung tv and a sony vaio laptop in the wireless network
    thank you

What you have would appear to be working but I can comment how I would redefine your setup.  Note that both Airport Express and Time Capsule can function as wireless base stations so you do have wireless everywhere and at all times — using the Time Capsules for backups doesn’t mean your parents won’t have internet access regardless of the where the base stations are located.
You appear to have devices to connect to your network that use the 2.4 GHz band with 802.11g such as the iPhone 3G and perhaps the 5 GHz band with 802.11n such as likely the Macbook Pro if it’s a recent model.  The iPhone 4 can use 5 GHz and 802.11n.  Can’t comment on the Sony and Samsung but you can check their specs.
Now the Time Capsule (if it’s a recent version), can simultaneously supply 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band signals, but the Airport Express (if it’s recent) can only use one of those bands at one time.  Likely the lowest common denominator for your devices is going to be the 2.4 GHz band since the devices that are capable of using 5 GHZ also support 2.4 GHz.  If you don’t use 5 GHz, you won’t lose much in a two-storey home because likely it’s the 2.4 GHz band is better signal anyway because 5 GHz signals drop off quickly with several walls/floors to penetrate.
You also didn’t mention if the Airport Express is used to support a printer and/or AirPlay (using iTunes to play on remote speakers via the Airport Express connection) but that might also be a factor in the best location to place the Airport Express.  Although the printer could be switched between the Time Capsule and the Airport Express if needed, only the Airport Express will support your remote speakers.
Recommend you use the Time Capsule as the Base station.  When using Airport Utility to define the network, after you name your network, etc., select the Wireless tab, check the box “Allow this network to be extended” and set the Radio Mode to "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)”.
Using the Airport Utility, click on the Airport Express; after you define the device and network name, select the Wireless tab, define the Wireless Mode as “Extend a Wireless Network” and check the box “Allow wireless clients”.
    Hope that helps.

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme and Time Capsule to my new iMac so that AE is used for network and TC only used for Time Machine backup?

I didn't realize that Time Capsule will only support the print function of a wireless multifunction printer.  So I want to use Extreme for my network to have full use of my printer and use TC as the Time machine backup only.  How to I make the connections?

Thanks for your response and this is getting complicated but I just purchased a new iMac as well as the Airport TC.  I've had the Airport Extreme for a year or so.  The Airport Extreme worked perfectly with my old iMac wirelessly and I had all functions of my printer with no problems.  I was expecting the same with the TC.  But the instruction that came with TC say to connect the printer to the TC via USB...which I did.  And the print function worked perfectly but nothing else.  In researching I discovered that when wired that way the TC only supports the print function...not scan or fax or anything else.  I tried going wireless since my AE worked perfectly via wireless but I got no printer functions at all that way.  But I'm wondering also if I tried that during a time I was having other issues...I had to delete and re-add my printer which solved some other problems.  I may try that again...and see if I can get all print functions with just the TC connected
As far as connecting both your AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule on your network, we're not clear on exactly how you want to do this.  Will the AirPort Extreme connect to your modem using an Ethernet cable and the Time Capsule connect to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable?.......or......do you want the Time Capsule to connect to the network using wireless?
Well... first of all I would like not to have to use the AE at all...I would prefer using just my TC for network, all print functions and Time Machine backup if that's possible. My printer will not accept Ethernet connections (Canon MX512).
After failing at getting this to work, I decided I would try to use my AE for net and print functions and just use my TC for Time Machine backup.  I tried several different connection configurations with no success until finally I connected cable modem to my AE via Ethernet and went wireless with the AE and printer. but connected the AE to the TC via Ethernet and amazingly everything worked like a charm (for a while) and I was patting myself on the back for being so smart.  But now I find that the connection only lasts for a short time.  If I leave it for a while the TC goes invisible...or at least I see a message saying the Ethernet is unplugged...but it is not... and I lose internet connection even though I have a green light on my AE. So now I'm at a loss. I don't know why I keep losing network signal and why my system thinks the Ethernet is unplugged.
So... after all this...I figured I wasn't so smart after all and I must have things wired incorrectly.
So... it sounds like you are saying I should go back and try again to get my new TC to work as I want it to via wireless instead of connecting via USB...is that correct?  Could you tell me exactly how I should wire my equipment from cable modem to AE and/or TC to achieve net capability, full functions of my printer and Time Machine backup...
    Thanks...

  • Should I set up my mac air or time capsule first?  Both seem to need each other

I got a mac air and time capsule.  Which sould I set up first.  I have tried setting up both but I seem to get stuck as both need to be set to to work together (of course).  Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Set up first the MacBook Air. When you have set up the MacBook Air, turn on the Time Capsule and open AirPort Utility to set up your Time Capsule

  • Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

  • I own and work on two Mac computers.. a MacBook Pro and an iMac. Am I required to "purchase" the one-time in-App purchase of $4.99 TWICE, one for each computer..??

I own and work on two Mac computers.. a MacBook Pro (dual core, 3.06GHz, 8 GBs RAM) and an iMac ((dual core, 3.06GHz, 4 GBs RAM). Am I required to "purchase" the Garageband one-time in-App purchase of $4.99 TWICE, one for each computer..??

The answer to your question is not about the GarageBand content but the concept of downloading any apps (or in-apps purchases) from the app store. The Key is your Apple ID.
Whenever you download an app (it doesn't matter if you pay for the app or if it is free) you have to to be logged in to the App Store with a valid Apple ID. That becomes your "Online License". Whenever you are logged in to the App Store with that Apple ID you will see your Purchase History, what apps you downloaded and also what apps have updates available. As you see, this procedure is independent from your actual computer. The App Store is only interested in your Apple ID for verification.
To download an app or content on a different computer, just make sure you are logged in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you did for the initial purchase.
The button will now display (instead of Free or the price tag) "Install" because the App Store knows that you purchased the item before (with that Apple ID) and that you computer you are on at the moment oesn't have th app installed. Just click the "Install" button to download the app.
Here is how the Button looks like depending on the condition.
The same principle applies to in-app purchases. With GarageBand, when you try to restore Purchases, make sure you are logged in in the Apple Store with the Apple ID you made the original purchase.
One more thing: You don't need to be logged in to actually run an app, only for online activities (downloads, updates)
    Hope that helps
