Two macs and two iPhoto versions

I just recently switched from windows -
I have a mini which i purchased in December, came with iPhoto 5. I Just purchased a powerpc g4 which came with iPhoto 6.
Is there a way to share one library of photos across two different macs with two separate versions? How about if I upgrade v5 to v6, can i share that way?

HI diane,
You can share photos using iPhoto sharing. Check out the links to see how.
Also you can still share between a version 4, 5 and 6 library as far as I know.
SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

Than LR should have brought in the RAW files as well. ACR is the RAW
processing engine used by LR under the covers so anything not supported by
ACR would not be supported by Lightroom.
Are you shooting RAW plus JPEG? By default, Lightroom will stack then
unless you tell it not to. Check to see if there is a small badge on the
preview that looks like two sheets of paper with a number. That is how
Lightroom indicates a stack. You can unstack them by clicking on the badge.
There is also a menu item to stack/unstack photos. Otherwise, I would have
to research but not sure why Lightroom would ignore the RAW photos but
    still import the JPEGS.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Why is there such a diffrency in file size in PS cs6 for mac and cs6 pc version?

What am i missing in the mac version?

There's no difference in features between the Mac and PC version. I believe the file difference is simply due to the foundation of the application, and additional support for different OS versions.

  • Unable to open iPhoto after installing Mavericks and latested iPhoto Version.

I have just installed Mavericks onto my Macbook Pro. The next thing I did was purchase, download and install the most recent version of iPhoto. The previous version of iPhoto was '09 Vers. 8.1.2.
I have about 300gb’s of images in my iPhoto library, which are on an external HD. When I try to launch iPhoto, I get a message saying the iPhoto library must be upgraded. So, I click on ‘upgrade’,and either a white screen with a large icon of a folder appears, but nothing else happens. One other time, before I clicked on upgrade, a gray screen with a scrolling gear appeared, but once again… nothing happens. I still can not access any of the images in my iPhoto library.
How do I get the new iPhoto version to play nice with my images?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. • Iphoto hangs after upgrading to Yosemite and latest iPhoto version

It tells me the library needs upgrading, and starts to search the library. The progress bar suggests something is happening then hangs after about 99% completion. I have had to force close twice after several hours stuck at that point and then start the whole process from scratch when I restart.

Have you followed these instructions - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/Help/rebuilding%20a%20corrupted%20iphoto%20li brary.html
iPhoto Library Manager > Help > Rebuilding a corrupted iPhoto library

    Rebuilding a corrupted iPhoto library
If you have an iPhoto library that is corrupt and causing iPhoto to crash or otherwise be unusable, iPhoto Library Manager provides the ability to rebuild your library based on the information found in its library data files. Note that iPhoto also has a built-in rebuild function that can be sometimes be used to repair a corrupted library database. You can find instructions on how to use that on Apple's website at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638 (iPhoto 6 or later) or http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2042 (iPhoto 5 or earlier).
iPhoto Library Manager's rebuild works differently, in that instead of trying to repair the library in place, it creates a brand new library and tries to reimport the entire contents of the original library into the new one, including reconstructing albums, photo metadata, etc. Note that rebuilding a library has all the same limitations as other photo transfer operations as far as what can and can't be copied between libraries. Also, depending on how badly damaged the library is, iPhoto Library Manager may or may not be able to piece together some or all of the library metadata.
To start a rebuild, select the library you would like to rebuild, then choose the "Rebuild Library" item from the "Library" menu. You will be prompted to choose a location for the rebuilt library, and whether or not you want iPLM to scavenge orphaned photos it finds in the library package. Once you've made your choices, iPLM will examine the library and rebuild the library structure and photos as best it can, then display you a preview of what it was able to find. If your library is badly damaged and the preview is missing a lot of content from the original library, this can save you from going through with a rebuild that won’t end up being of much help.
Once you've had a chance to examine the preview, if you want to go forward and create the rebuilt library, click the "Rebuild" button in the upper right. iPhoto Library Manager will create a new library and start importing the contents of the original library into the new one.
    Scavenging photos
In some cases, either the iPhoto library database is too damaged for iPhoto Library Manager to be able to salvage any information from it, or the library data is incomplete and there are photos that still exist inside the library package, but iPhoto has lost track of them. In these cases, you may want to check the "Scavenge orphaned photos" checkbox when choosing a location for the rebuilt library. After iPhoto Library Manager has read the library data as best it can, it will perform an additional pass through the package and locate any photos that are no longer referenced in the library database. Any additional photos that are found will be included in the rebuild, and a new "Scavenged Photos" album will be created in the rebuilt library containing any scavenged photos.

  • Resetting mac and saving Iphoto pictures

I ve got a huge doubt about saving my iphoto pictures so i can restore my macbook air to his factory settings without losing losing them
I dont know if I can save the Iphoto Library in my hard drive and then put it back after resetting it.
and with iphoto library I mean this icon  (excuse my ignorance, I m horrible with technology)

I would certainly not restore a system to change the things you indicate. You might cause yourself some serious problems.
I would reset the SMC (system management controller) to see if things change.
My log-in screen is gray...shade unknown. I rarely use the camera on my MacBook Pro.
I would post a separate question about your camera issue to see if someone can address that issue.

  • I re-installed my MAC and lost IPhoto

I had some problems with my MAC so I was advised to re-install, once I did my problem was solved UNTIL I realized that I had lost applications which had come with it (IPhoto, IMovie, IDVD, GarageBand...)!! I still have my pictures, which I thought I was going to lose...can I do something to recuperate IPHOTO??
PS.I live in Bolivia and we don't have an Apple store.
    THANK YOU

If iPhoto came pre-installed your computer then you can reinstall the iApps from the system install disks that came with the computer. You need to look for the install package titled "Install Bundled Software Only" as seen in the screenshot below:

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Trying to update my mac and the newest version is not being updated

I have been trying to update my mac desktop and it is not updating to the latest IO S version or itunes

A computer cannot run iOS. Do you mean Mac OS?
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then  "About This Mac".  Write down what it says about "version"and report that here.  Now continue to "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).  I suspect you are running an older computer in which case it is quite possible you cannot upgrade iTunes unless you can upgrade Mac OS which may not be possible if it is too old.

  • My Mac and/or iPhoto will not recognize my camera.

So I shot pics in RAW yesterday and when I hook my camera it is not recognized. This happened the other day also when I shot in RAW. What would be the problem?

Did you apply the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.2? If so the following may help:

This might work (from Clem who figured it out):
Delete the file: System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle then (re)install the previous version.
    Get the previous version here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/digitalcamerarawcompatibilityupdate21.htm l
    Restart your computer. "

  • Iphoto import of Original and Edited Iphoto versions from Aperture

I am using Aperture to improve some of my IPhoto 2008 edited pics. I'm keeping my Iphoto pics in their current location and importing selected ones to Aperture that I want to edit further. Following import of an IPhoto album to Aperture I could see both 'IPhoto Original', and 'IPhoto Edited' versions (great!). For some pics I have further edited the 'original' and for others I've further edited the 'IPhoto edited' version. For a few I've used Aperture to further edit/improve BOTH versions.
I imported the photos back into Iphoto but I can't see both the 'edited' and 'original' in the browser, I can see and import only the 'IPhoto edited' version - hence not seeing in iPhoto some pics I have edited and want to use.
What's the best way to get the other (ie both) versions into IPhoto? I want to create a book in Iphoto because I have additional Iphoto pics to include that don't need an Aperture edit. A key consideration is not eating up disk space.
    Thank you BW

BW -- just wanted to underscore nathan's excellent but (likely) unwelcome and perhaps easily ignored advice:
Don't use both applications for storing your pictures or for photo editing.
What you want to do -- use iPhoto (a superb program, imho) for image management of most image editing, and then export to Aperture for just a few images -- is a good idea on the face of it but difficult to implement and practically impossible to maintain.
Examine your options, take into proper account your experience and your needs, and choose one or the other ^1^. Images which need additional work which you can't accomplish in iPhoto should be edited using an external editor (such as PSCS5 or PSE or others).
    1. The programs (Aperture and iPhoto) are extremely different in concept and depth. Search the forum for some of those differences. Imho, Aperture takes 50x as long to learn as iPhoto. The curve is not steep, but it is long. Aperture is much more powerful than iPhoto.
PS: As soon as you can, get the largest fast internal drive you can afford. And make multiple back-ups of your Libraries. If you know you can always restore a Library, deleting one isn't terrifying.

  • My iPhoto app says unable to open.  I have 10.7.4 OS and the iPhoto version is 9.2.3  I have tried updating and reinstalling app but I still get the same message

I updated everything and triedn reinstalling the iphoto app and I still get the message "iphoto can not open due to a problem".  The message says that there may be compatiblilty issues with OS and Iphoto.  I updated everything like it suggested and still doesn't work.  Any suggestions?  I'm making an appointment at Apple store to see if they can fix the issue....I was hoping to do it on my own....

Did you delete the receipts before re-installing?

  • Can't open iPhoto on MacBook. no error message. click on icon, doesn't respond. 10.7.5 version and '08 iPhoto version

IPhoto not responding when I click on icon.. No error messages, just won't open. Tried to open in system preferences did not work.
I am not computer savey, so only tried re-booting. Can you help? Thank you

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • I upgraded to version 5, and I lost google toolbar. I have a mac and the new version will not take it.

apparently, google toolbar is not compatible with new vesion 5

Install the following Add-on until Google releases a new version of their toolbar that is compatible with Firefox 5. Google needs to test their toolbar with Firefox 5 and change one line in their code to make it compatilbe. Most Add-ons that worked with Firefox 4 should still work with Firefox 5, but the developers need to update a line in their Add-on's code to indicate with which versions of Firefox the Add-on is compatible. The following Add-on adds a "Compatibility" button in your Add-ons > Extensions that you may need to click after installing it and restarting Firefox.
